Went to this steakhouse recently and had a disappointing experience. Our server forgot to bring out the cloud cake dessert that was included with our meal/order. We didn't realize it until after we left, so we called the restaurant afterward. Instead of trying to make it right, they refused to provide the dessert later or offer any reimbursement or credit. Mistakes happen, but customer service is how a restaurant handles those mistakes. The lack of accountability and unwillingness to resolve a simple issue left a bad impression, especially considering the prices here. Midtown East isn't generally known for trendy eateries, in fact certain Yelpers have gone so far as to deem the area "a sterile corporate wasteland." Well Monterey certainly defies that stereotype with its gorgeous Art Deco decor, friendly attentive service and inventive steak-forward menu. Walking into the beautiful space with its curved bar, pink walls, blue banquettes and dim lighting, I felt beamed back into the glitzy Manhattan days of yore. (Just think James Bond meets Miami Vice and you'll get the idea). To really enhance the old-school vibes, there's not one but three tableside carts for tableside preparations and service - one each for prime rib, flaming desserts and martinis. We went with their signature $75 three course prime rib price fixe (available on Fridays and Saturdays), which gives you a choice of ceasar salad or smoked salmon appetizer, prime rib with fries or potato puree, and dessert. I started with the Smoky Paloma cocktail, a tasty and refreshing concoction although a little light on the mezcal. Caesar salad starter was a copious portion, very tasty and swimming with fresh anchovies. Prime rib carved tableside was tender and juicy, although I would ask them to lighten up on the salt next time. Potato puree was absolutely divine, so creamy that I'm salivating just thinking about it! Lime cream cloud cake dessert was light and lovely. Partner said his dark chocolate tart was fantastic too. Despite Monterey's glitzy decor, I saw a nice mix of couples, family gatherings and friends enjoying themselves on a Saturday evening. I've been wanting to try out this restaurant, because the name is the place I grew up in: Monterey (in California). The interior was stunning, classy, and spacious with fancy lights, white table cloths, cream color scheme with colorful accents, and full bar. My plan was to order the classic dish, Steak Frites, but the Berkshire Pork Shank intrigued me. This was served with cabbage, roasted apple, along with a nice crispy element on top. I think it would have been better with something more substantial, such as roasted potatoes and carrots. The Pork Shank itself was an impressive size with a fair amount of meat, but a lot of it was bone. The Pork was wonderfully succulent and full of bold flavor from the tasty, savory smoked pork sauce. The apples brought a bright, fresh, sweet element to the meal. Cabbage was just okay. I was able to try the Steak Frites, which I really enjoyed. The Steak was slightly charred, tender, and well seasoned. Fries were steak cut, delightfully crispy and hearty. My friend and I shared dessert of Peanut Butter Chocolate Mousse with ice cream. I found this to be disappointingly small with barely any peanut butter taste. The chocolate mousse was rich, smooth and yummy though. Service was solid. Our waiter was welcoming, knowledgeable about the menu, and accommodating. Prices are on the expensive side. I would be open to returning, but not for a while. read more

The waiter was very attentive, and the space itself is beautiful. Most of what we ordered was very good, with one major exception. We started with the onion bread, which was delicious. The prawns were very good as well, though I wish they weren't quite as spicy. We also enjoyed the meatballs and the steak frites--the steak itself was good, but the sauce was a bit too mustard-forward for my taste. Unfortunately, the chicken dish was a big disappointment. We specifically asked the waiter beforehand if it was made with chicken breast and were told it was, but it turned out to be mostly dark meat. It came in large, thick chunks in a sauce that made it taste even worse. When it was put on our table it didn't even look appetizing. My husband and I took one bite and couldn't continue eating it. I really regret not sending it back, especially since we barely touched it and it wasn't what was described to us. Monterey is a steakhouse but has something for everyone - including vegetarians! The restaurant is clean, classy, and beautiful. To drink, I loved the Bittersweet Citrus Spritz (very similar to an aperol spritz) which is featured on the menu at their sister restaurant, Acadia (also a huge fan). To eat, the Comte Onion Bread is a must. The Truffle Lasagna is a delicious vegetarian option, I would have loved to have had more of that yummy truffle sauce on it however. For dessert, the Chocolate Soufflé should not be missed. The Bananas Foster is also tasty, but I think it's a bit overpriced for what you get. Overall, very tasty! read more

When my manager suggested that we venture up to the Rockefeller Center area for our team holiday lunch, I was shocked that he would want to brave the crowds that we would encounter. Though I tended to avoid that area, particularly in the winter, I quickly offered the suggestion of Monterey, a classy spot a few blocks away from the action. My colleagues agreed that the restaurant looked terrific, so we finalized our plan to dine there. The restaurant had a large downstairs and extremely high ceilings that made it possible to have second floor balcony seating, which was where our large booth was located. The place was completely packed, with every seat taken; it showed in our service, which was on the slower side. We were each debating on our main dishes, but decided to share some appetizers while we decided. The Balloon Sesame Lavash was certainly in the shape of a deflating mylar balloon, and it was covered with sesame seeds. The soft, thin bread was served with a carrot tahini spread that was topped with merguez-spiced almonds. We all adored that jazzed up version of a bread service. We also tried the Crispy Artichokes with a Meyer lemon and pepper aïoli. These were also great, but tasted more like sunchokes than traditional artichokes. The mayo-based dipping sauce really complemented the chokes and improved the overall impact of the item. The Tuna Tartare was pretty standard, but well-balanced and flavorful. For my main dish, I went with the Pan-Roasted Salmon with lentils and brussels sprouts in a red wine sauce. The fish filet was portioned in a very generous fashion, especially for a lunch. However, I ate it all, because it was just that good! Everything was cooked to perfection, and the red wine sauce was a sweet addition. My colleagues enjoyed their Steak Frites and French Dip Sandwich, as well. We were stuffed by the end of the meal, so we skipped dessert. However, my coffee was nice and rich, but my manager asked for a second cup and was charged. So, that was a letdown. Had dinner on a weeknight here and was unimpressed. The restaurant has an art deco vibe. It was very warm inside since they had the main doors onto 50th street wide open. Our server was inattentive and it took forever to get drinks; when she did pour my rose, it was the weakest pour ever for $18 (she poured it tableside). The spicy strawberry margarita was very heavy for a cocktail. Tried one and couldn't do another since it was so heavy & filling. The food was average at best. To start we shared the tuna tartare, fried calamari and a half dozen oysters. The calamari sauce is VERY spicy and the portion was small. The singular crouton that comes with the tuna tartare is so thin and tiny - while the tuna was good, the dish could have used another crostini with it. For mains, two of us had the filet and another had the steak frites. The portion of fries with the steak frites could have been more generous. They don't include any choice of sauce with the tenderloins which is a stingy move. From the sides, the creamed kale was delicious and the broccolini was good. The rosti potato was weird - would have been better it was served warmer. Ordered the bananas foster for dessert - taste was fine but also excessively overpriced for the portion size. The bathrooms are downstairs and weren't clean. I have no reason to come here again - slow service and average food. read more

I come here very often because it's very close to work and the ambience is great; nice high ceilings, nice decor, low mood lighting, and lots of seating. Usually get just drinks but have also gotten the food which has been very solid. Worthy of my 1000th review, a stunning Deco vibe steakhouse upon entering. First thing you'll notice besides the energy is the lightness of the colors of the place. It's pastel seating makes it warm and vibrant. Great for business meetings, social gatherings or a date. Totally a vibe. First thing I noticed once seated, was the awesome Martini bar cart. The menu showcases a few pre-designed drinks or you can customize your own classic with perhaps a twist or a shake. The idea is to watch the Sommelier at work. Then there's the prime rib entree, also served table side -- wheeled over on a cart! It's quite a presentation...get that camera ready. The dome shaped lid unveils a beautiful prime rib roast, just waiting to be sliced. The server knows just how to plate it, some au jus is drizzled on and then served. The prime rib was perfect. Just the right amount of fat on the edges, prepared medium rare. It was a beauty. (Comes with a side of super creamy mashed potatoes and an even creamier whipped horseradish). That was heavenly as well. Other must try items, for starters, the balloon sesame lavash. It was very hot to the touch (be careful when ready to pull it apart to eat). It was like a thin flatbread but presented in this balloon shape. A hint of olive oil flavor paired with the sesame seeds and the carrot tahini spread - it was divine. Another appetizer I had was the Hokkaido scallop. I could never resist the raw bar if scallops are on the menu. Presented with daikon, chive oil, serrano chili and yuzu. Chef's Kiss. It was a beautifully balanced dish both in texture and flavor. My friend had the barbequed prawns for his appetizer. Goodness, the size of the plate and the prawns! It looked like a full entree. They were served over grits, New Orleans style. I couldn't try it due to my shrimp allergy but I can tell it did not disappoint. My friend thoroughly enjoyed his meal and he normally doesn't order any seafood that he needs to "work" with so minus removing the prawns head, it was worth the work. It was quite the sizeable appetizer and delicious I'm told. Another entree we must mention, the Iberico pork chop. I mean, what's there to say besides the name. It was a must try just because. Served with ginger cabbage and mushrooms, house bacon and a smoke pork sauce. What's not to love? The pork and mushrooms were excellent (I asked to try some). So juicy and so tender. My dining companion was celebrating his birthday so you know we had to order some dessert. Truth be told we were both quite content with our meals and our stomachs were at capacity. Between the food, before dinner cocktails, and wine throughout - I couldn't really eat another bite. In the spirit of his birthday, we chose something we could share. The ricotta beignets were delightful. Very light and airy with lemon curd. Surprisingly (and thankfully) they were not coated with powdered sugar. The cinnamon and vanilla sugar worked better as a topping. To our surprise, our server presented my friend with a complimentary slice of cake as well when she brought our dessert. Candle and all. It was nicely plated too. I believe the cake was the cloud cake (which is a strawberry layer cake). That was such a pleasant surprise - so sweet of the server to do that. She must've seen or heard me present him with the Birthday card and gift. Fun fact, if you order the bananas foster dessert, that is served on a cart as well! It is flambeed tableside too. The overall dining experience Monterey provides makes this place so welcoming. It's so lively and fun. Did I mention great for socializing? As soon as you walk in, you can tell this place is trendy and new; the space is beautiful - aesthetically pleasing with accents of gold. Started off our meal with a drink: coffee and a carrot juice (mocktail). Take note, free refills for coffee and alternate milk options are available. The carrot juice mocktail was well concocted - was tart (lemon or lime) and ginger-y. We ordered three things to share: comte & onion bread, chopped salad, and the french dip sandwich. DO NOT SKIP on the comte & onion bread. Although it is pricey ($18), it was the best thing we ordered - warm, pillow-y, garlic-y and onion-y, and cheesy. Paired wonderfully with the creme fraiche (and chives). The french dip was perfect to share. Stacked with enough beef and a generous portion of fries. The paired au jus was not necessary - the sandwich was juicy and moist. However, the au jus did give extra bit of flavor. Wow! Wow! Wow! I was searching for a new spot. Unique decor and food, a real "nyc vibe" and experience for my birthday this year. Well Monterey did not disappoint. The retro art deco decor was beautiful, stylish, sleek but inviting. The commitment to the decor also went as far as the bathroom which was super cool. The food was exquisite - carefully plated and a fantasy of flavors for the palette. Appetizers were fresh, well seasoned - I might have to go back for just the Madai. My husband got the tuna and liked it. I got the squid ink pasta - delicious, a little spicy, minty and fresh, very interesting. The cocktails were equally great and complex in flavor. In the never ending rotation of steakhouses in NYC, Monterey is a rather new entry and one of the best. The two level restaurant with Miami vibes offers excellent food with service to match. Taking a cue from Monkey Bar, Monterey offers more than just steak and does it very well. On our visit we had; Ballon Sesame Lavash - a totally different bread offering from a steakhouse. The lavash was excellent and is served with carrot tahini. Comte & Onion Bread - another excellent bread offering served with crème fraiche. Both breads are worth the cost of admission. Chopped Salad - a light, refreshing salad. Foie Gras Torchon - the foie gras was excellent, as good as you would get at a top level French restaurant. 30 Day Dry Aged Strip - 14oz, cooked a perfect medium rare, and delicious. One of the best strips in the city. Side Of Fries & Brussel Sprouts - very good sides. Cloud Cake - this is a kind of sponge cake with lime and strawberries topped with whipped cream, an excellent desert. Chocolate Soufflé - another excellent dessert and worth having on the table to share. Service was top notch. I love the ample space both vertical and between tables; so different from most NY restaurants that are jamming in as much as they can into tight spaces. The drinks were on point. I had the XXX 20th and I loved it. For food, I had the salmon which was seasoned pretty well. The cauliflower gratin for my side was absolutely wonderful. So much so that I forgot to take a pic! I was slightly disappointed with the 30 day dry aged steak. I stole a few bites from my boyfriend's plate and I thought it could have had more flavor to it. Had the Brussel Sprouts to accompany the steak. That portion was too big as I was dining alone. They would have done a single portion but the waiter urged that it wasn't family style so I went for the full side. Too much. Atmosphere was wonderful. The place is open and bright and the music was particularly AWESOME I noted. There are some bar service window tables looking right onto 50th street. (Monterey is behind St. Patrick's Cathedral) I was in a hoodie and jeans and I felt under dressed. Button down is more appropriate and many had sport coats on. I had a terrible experience at Monterey and was horrified by the way I was treated. My coworker and I went for a drink after work and were told we had to order food to sit at the tables by the bar. We ordered a few apps and a dessert to go with our drinks and settled in. A few minutes later, the maitre d approached our table screaming, telling us we didn't follow directions. He was extremely abrasive, accusatory and unreasonable. There had clearly been a misunderstanding on the policy and he was unwilling to have a civil conversation. I've been here twice in two weeks and the food was just exceptional each time. Their seafood and raw bar offers are so fresh and beautifully presented. No visit is complete without an order of the comté and onion bread with the chive crême fraîche. The bread comes out like a bouquet wrapped in a napkin. Every roll you pull apart has the same amazing texture - crunchy oniony exterior, and pillowy soft (like Japanese milk bread) interior. The service is attentive and helpful both times I've been here. If you have a good friend, go in on the Monterey Plateau together. It's a generous variety for fresh clams, shellfish, and tuna tartar. I was even impressed how half a lobster could still feel like more lobster than I expected. The Citrus Spritz is a really light complimentary cocktail to the hearty meal. The space is really ace with that art deco, millennial appeal but really does make you feel like you're in for a treat and feels like a super fancy dinner. Why isn't this a five star review? If they can improve on anything, it's not the food, service or ambiance but there were fruit flies around in the main dining area. It can really you out of an otherwise 10/10 on aesthetics. I came here for 2023 restaurant week dinner last Friday after being told to leave the office because I worked too many hours. This spot used to be Maloney and Porcelli Steakhouse. The restaurant has a vibe of being on Miami Vice. We ended up eating dinner in the bar because we started out with happy hour. Dinner menu did not start until 5 pm on the dot. My friend and I started out with red and white wine, respectively for happy hour. For the restaurant week menu, we ordered the shrimp cocktail and fried artichokes. My friend enjoyed the shrimp cocktail, and I loved the fried artichokes. For the main Entree, we ordered the Iberico pork chop and porcini lasagna. The pork chop was huge and my friend took it home for her lunch the next day and it tasted very good. I devoured the porcini lasagna, which to me was not a traditional lasagna. I ordered the lasagna because I saw truffle cream sauce, and I just have to get it. Rather, it was fit for a person in keto. For dessert, we both ordered the cloud cake, and it was light, refreshing, and yummy. I'll definitely be returning for the prime rib prix fixe and happy hour menus. read more

Went here for my wife's birthday and wow! The raw bar madai and honey nut squash with stracciatella were both great to start, as was the seafood squid ink pasta she had for an entree and my grilled tuna. But the service and showmanship are even better. We saw one of the waiters prepare homemade martinis from a cart and explain all different kinds of liquor choices to the guests. Then he took another cart and sliced prime rib with au jus. Oh and still another cart to flambé bananas foster! All really cool and you could tell he loved the job. We started with the Comte bread, which was delicious - think of a monkey style pull apart bread in swirls, served with lots of crème fraiche style butter. It was fine in seconds. Oysters were okay, super tiny and not Uber flavorful, they also didn't serve it with the traditional mignonette, which felt disappointing. The tuna tartare was pretty delicious, the heirloom tomatoes were again - bland and disappointing. The crispy artichokes were greasy and nothing to write home about. They did have silver oaks wine for us, which was a plus. I got the primavera pasta, which was slightly underdone and tasted average. It isn't a dish I will remember or think again about. Pretty much everyone else at the table had the tenderloin. The meat itself was nothing to write home about, but the bordelaise sauce it came with was amazing and should be bottled and sold at stores. It had the perfect oniony umami taste and you could eat it on a sock lol. The table side bananas Foster was a pretty big disaster and I don't recommend it, fancy as it was. The sorbet trio was pretty sad - couldn't discern any flavors at all. The soufflé was a big hit and I would come back here just for that. The most amazing food and excellent service. We've had some amazing food on our trip but this is definitely at the top of the list! The oysters were great and the prime rib was amazing. We were very excited to eat here and were very disappointed with service . Upon arriving to a near empty restaurant we were seated at a small corner table. Our first greeting from the waitress was "do you know what you want". I was excited they had table side martinis but was disappeared shortly after when they were no longer around for a drink after first drink. The food was dropped off while one guest was at the restroom. No one came back over to check on food or offer a drink. 2 managers and a sommelier were all circling the table and no one once asked how the food was or if we would like another drink. The waitress finally appeared after we had finished food and flagged her down. Do not recommend for the price of the food. read more
