I'm quite happy with the box braids I got done. Awa didn't braid my hair, but instead another lady did (I cannot remember her name). Overall, I would definitely recommend Awa's African Braids. PROS: -It took 4 hours to do my braids, which isn't bad at all. -I kept telling the lady not to do my braids too tight, and although she scoffed at that, she did make sure the braids were comfortable. I did not leave in pain or with bumps on my hairline, so I'm happy. -Price was good. CONS: -The parts are sloppy. I asked her to part the braids in squares, but instead she did them in all sorts of weird geometric shapes. So, while my braids look cute, they aren't as polished and nice as they could have been. -The braids came out way longer than I wanted them to be, but that isn't such a big deal. It just gives them a more dramatic look. Overall, I would suggest Awa's braids to others. These ladies know what they're doing! Awa is a wonderful professional and extraordinary braider. I found her to be easy to work with, very communicative and timely with her services. She booked me in the spot of cancellation and accommodated my requested braiding style (small/medium) box braids. Before I knew it (aka 5 short braiding hours later), I had a beautiful, consistent, neat head full of gorgeous box braids. Mostly important, Awa had a great pandemic practice. She required a mask (I wore two!) and she keep her mask on for the duration of the appointment. The entire 5 hours it was a 1:1 ratio so I feel much safer than if others would have been there. I have been seen Awa for hair care since 2015, and she continues to deliver the best hair braiding experience one can ask for. This time I got medium/small box braids. It has been 2 weeks since install and I have not lost one braid. I just got done getting my hair braided by Awa and she did a very good job, she is FAST!! I'm an Aries and that is super important to me I get very impatient after a while, and I never got that feeling because she was done before it ever came. Prices are reasonable too for how fat she is. One thing to note though is if you are looking for a good parting job I don't think this is the places. Personally for the price, and the time you can't be mad and it's really not that big of a deal anyway but parting does make the braids look more "professional" this is just a heads up. I'm sure i don't already have to tell you how hard it it to find good African braiders in this city. Well these braiders, aren't good, they're excellent! Awa's is a secret, but it shouldn't be. I got crochet braids here about 2 months ago and I was getting compliments left and right as soon as I left the store. The whole process took a total of 3 1/2 hours which is amazing. I washed, conditioned combed my hair the night before. They accommodated all of my requests, invisible part, blending two colors, cutting the hair was included (sometimes that is extra). Today for the first time I got my hair braided by Awa. She not only was able to fit me in this weekend for singles but was extremely fast. I have very thick hair and a ton of it. She had me out the door in under 5hrs (other braider have taken 12hrs on average for a shorter style). She can supply the hair if you don't want or know how to pick out your own. I'm very satisfied with my Senegalese twists. Awa was kind enough to fit me in within a day's notice! I got a call from Sara and quickly rushed over here. Great location. Sara is incredibly fast!! I got here around 3 and I'll be done by 6.15! It would have been an hour or so earlier had I come prepared as in hair prepped for braiding. The hair feels light, looks very neat and falls nicely in place. They aren't too small just medium sized about 0.25" in diameter. Fast good reliable service. read more

Went for an appointment yesterday, first off so I went to ours and when I arrived at 12:15 she said hey go ahead have a seat I'll be with you in a moment I have to finish with this client I said fine I said down I waited almost 45 minutes so around 115 she said hey you know you can handle I set out next thing you know she started to braid my hair which I thought she was initially using my hair next thing you know she puts for braids over my shoulder and she's like this is my hair you should use my hair because when you dip your hair it looks like plastic seat this is your hair she used one braid for my hair and mind you I bought a pack of 85 inch hair which was supposed to be for Rapunzel braids next thing you know she's like yeah I cut it in half because you didn't tell me how long you wanted them I said well clearly on the package it's 85 inches she said that she refused to grade them that long unless I paid her $250 which initially the first price was 180 so I agreed mind you it was payday so I had the money I told her I would pay next thing you know she senses me being upset about the situation and she totally refuse service to me I did not curse her I did not see anything verbally to her to make her think that I would not what my hair done I went home and I cried because of her I literally had planned for a whole week to have my hair braided and she ruined it I'm going to post some pictures along to show that I actually showed her the actual size of the hair the length of the hair and she was well aware of what size braids that I wanted so please do not patronize this woman unless you just want to look like the crowd because that's what she selling the same hair same style to different women and she is profiting off of that and the sad part is she's African and I'm African-American so please it's just sad read more

I've had Awa braid my hair several times now and she's become who I go to for braids. She's fast. Really. I have incredibly thick hair and the actual braiding takes maybe 3-4 hours. I'll put the caveat that my hair is short (did a big chop maybe a year and a half ago) but as long as the braids are down to your butt it doesn't take long. Mine were tight, but I didn't have any negative side effects (bumpy edges). Prices are fair and are pretty much based off the length. As someone said before she doesn't do perfect squares, but for someone who is used to spending 8 hours for weaves and other hair services I can live with that. read more

I was in pain for days after getting crochet braids here so I will likely never return. I told the stylist that it was tight but she insisted the pain would wear off. Coming from the Bay Area, perhaps I have high standards however this was easily the worst service I've ever experienced in a salon. Do yourself a favor and ensure that Awa is the stylist doing your hair. Her sister Sarah has done mine twice and both times the hair was either lopsided to too loose (which is saying a lot, considering I have an exceptionally sensitive scalp and don't believe in hairstyles being "perfect"). To start, she was nearly an hour late and wouldn't call or text and offered no updates on ETA; Awa was the only person that would speak to me over the phone. Secondly, Sarah asked me to hold her crying child while the services were being rendered. I understand that good childcare is hard to find, but I disagree with putting your clientele in that position. They offered to do the hair a third time but I refused, simply wanting to get a partial refund as I was working seven days a week and already took a financial hit to take time off. All in all, sixteen hours of precious time was wasted and when I voiced my frustrations the women became increasingly belligerent, blaming my hair texture/density for Sarah's inability to deliver. The customer service was so terrible that I nearly reported them to the BBB (and still may). As a woman of color, I had very high hopes, with every desire to support a local WOC-owned business. Despite the scarcity of Black hair care professionals in the Seattle area, I will not be returning. BUYER BEWARE!!!! read more

This is a couple months late but still relevant. When booking my appointment I sent Awa a photo of the Twists I wanted along with the YouTube video of them. She quoted $180 which I agreed to because they were crochet twists. I spent $45 dollars and purchased the hair that was linked in the video just to make sure that there wouldn't be any issues. When arrived they weren't ready, which is to be expected and I definitely had no issues there. Once they began, they let me know that it would take too long and would be too much work for them to do the crochet twists the way I wanted and instead they would just use the hair to do individual twists. I reluctantly agreed even though I had done my due diligence by sending her a video of exactly what I wanted prior to the appointment. Awa then told me that I did not have the right type of hair. I repeatedly told her that it was the exact same type of hair from the video. She proceeded to do one twist which looked very messy and then told me that she could not work with that hair and that I should get another type of hair, a Cuban twists brand. Desperately needing to have my hair done, I gave in. I went to the beauty supply and spent $30+ more dollars on hair. One of the ladies started doing my hair which ended up shorter that I originally wanted. Later on a young girl came in and Awa quoted her long individual braids at $160 and began doing her hair. The other lady began helping with my hair until I noticed that the braids she was doing were really messy and bumpy. I pointed it out and she got frustrated and just walked away and went to braid the little girls hair. The original lady then had the nerve to tell me that she couldn't re-do the sloppy braids because if she unraveled the hair she couldn't reuse it. On the plus side my hair was done in 3.5 hours. One the downside I believe I overpaid and was over charged and did not get what I wanted and got bad attitudes from the women. read more
