    Yassa, Yassa Grilled Chicken Bowl
    Johnny G.

I understand the hype. Its located in The Hugh dining hall. The line was massive. The food is halal. This is a great way to tap into West African cuisine. I went with some coworkers and was not disappointed at all. I had the Yassa Yassa Chicken Bowl (came out to about 18 dollars, its not a cheap lunch). It was delicious. The onion soup on the side is earthy and rich in flavor. The chicken bowl is spicy, tons of warm spices and vibrant. It was my first taste into West African food and I loved it. The staff are also one of the friendliest in the Hugh.

Imagine stepping into a culinary haven in the heart of Midtown, where art meets flavor and every bite tells a story. My curiosity took me to Teranga, a standout for African cuisine, nestled within The Hugh--a large food market that will captivate you from the moment you walk in. The Jollof bowl was a highlight, perfectly portioned so you feel satisfied but not stuffed. You get a nice portion of black eyed peas, jollof rice, citrus salmon and lightly sauteed greens. What really caught my attention was the separate bowl of sautéed onions--such a thoughtful touch that added a burst of flavor to each bite.: Teranga's dishes are not only delicious but also nutritious, making it a great choice for health-conscious foodies.

Teranga is a West African build-your-own-bowl style restaurant located inside The Hugh, a fancy food hall conveniently located in Midtown East. You can pick your base, main, sides, sauce and hot sauce. This was my first time trying West African or Senegalese food and it surpassed my expectation. There are 15 food vendors with a variety of world cuisines in The Hugh. The pricing is relatively affordable compared to other restaurants in Midtown area. The food hall is clean, spacious and comfy with restrooms. Perfect spot for having lunch with coworkers. *Chicken Mafe Bowl $17 We opted for a grilled chicken bowl with a savory peanut sauce (mafe). The sauce tasted like satay imo. The chicken was cooked to perfect tenderness. Imagine it was similar to satay chicken skewer with an African spin. The jollof rice on the bottom absorbed the rich and nutty flavors from the sauce. It was so flavorful that I couldn't stop but kept digging into the rice. They also put black eyed pea stew which served as a welcoming addition to the creaminess. While the mafe and moyo sauces weren't really spicy, the spice from the kelewele sweet plaintains caught us off guard. The portion was very big. I shared it with my friend and we still couldn't finish it (We had a small appetite though). So the portion size should be perfect for a grown man. ***Many vendors don't open on weekends. FYI Teranga opens Mon through Sat every week.

It was definitely different. It's like they tried to fuse African dishes with a rice bowl. The food was good. Didn't really satisfy the craving for jollof rice that I had because they were trying to fuse other cuisines. It's inside of food court so there's nothing to really say about ambiance. The service was good.

Inside the Hugh food court! I loved the chicken suya custom bowl -- with plantains. Their sauces are so good, get the onion one! Really juicy chicken.

The Hugh has such a wonderful atmosphere to grab lunch. Very open, natural light, and lots of seating. The food was great. I really love the plantains that come with the food and felt full after eating. The jollof rice was overcooked but had great flavor. Put some salt and pepper on the food especially for plantains.

Nestled in the Hugh building, Teranga is a cool African bowl spot. My friend and I dropped by for a quick pickup dinner. Service was quick, nice and friendly. The flavors were super tasty and a nice treat which is different from your normal chiptotle flavors. The various sauces were super fun to try with all the food. I was the biggest fan of the chicken, and relied on the sauce to elevate it... but overall a great tasty dinner pickup spot! The bowls are slightly more pricey, but well worth a cuisine and flavors that are not as commonly found in Midtown.

This food is sooooo good and flavorful. Omg you have to try. The chicken is so juicy and well seasoned.

The food was excellent!! The food was exceptionally flavorful and the chicken was very tender. I also loved the plantains and rice that came with the dish!! Highly recommend this place. Atmosphere is a little noisy as it is the food court at the Hugh, but that is just me. Service was also very friendly. I definitely would come back.

Located in The Hugh (a food court in midtown east), Teranga is similar to many in that it is customizable bowls, but offers an African spin on it. Have been here for lunch probably 30+ times, and almost always get the same thing. The Suya Super comes with Jollof rice, grilled chicken (or another protein if you wish), black eyed beans/misc vegetables, and sweet plantains. I get the Mafe peanut sauce to pour over - it provides a creamy and mild spicy kick that pairs very well.

The food and drinks were really good and the staff were working hard to keep up with the overwhelming amount of people. I read that Lagos has great food and drinks and they did not disappoint. Lagos decor was exquisite and on point. It was great admiring the display of artifacts on the walls. It was also a great place to people watch. The restaurant was a nice party vibe and everyone was having a great time even the staff. Of course the gratuities were included in your check and I wasn't surprise.

This spot is located inside an African museum. It is a small place when you walk in. The food is all cooked and laid out on trays. I asked the attendant what is the best dish and he asked if I want spicy or not. I said no spicy and he made the chicken bowl recommendation. The bowl was delicious ! Rice was cooked al dente, chicken juicy, beans so tender and topped with plantains! I have not been a fan of plantains but this one was delicious. And flavor profile was strong and hearty. My fiancé ordered a Yassa Yassa Grilled Chicken Bowl and I ordered a custom bowl. The delivery was very quick and it got to where we were faster than I expected which was a plus. Service was very good! I got a call saying one of the sauces I wanted was out unfortunately but they were helpful in providing me with alternatives. The Yassa Yassa bowl was very delicious, full of bold flavors, and a beautiful contrast between the spicy aromatic jollof, the sweet plantains, and the tangy onion sauce. The chicken in this bowl was definitely a little overdone and could have used more flavor. For my custom bowl, I got a chicken suya bowl with jollof as my base, plantains and the kale stew (Efo riro ) as sides and initially wanted the peanut (mafe) sauce which they were out of so I also tried the yassa or onion sauce. My bowl was absolutely delicious! Same bold flavors as the first bowl but the chicken was juicy, tender, and well spiced. Made all the difference! Both came with a nice chimichurri like spicy sauce called rof which I really enjoyed since it added a spicy, herbal, bright kick to the bowl. This place has amazing flavor and is very filling! I love the fast casual nature of it and how nourishing it feels. This is basically a Chipotle but West African inspired. The portion of meat was very generous in each bowl which was nice. The jollof was amazing! Highly recommend trying one of their suya meats since the seasoning is incomparable! Will be going back again for more bowls in the future.

This is the best restaurant in the entire city according to the NYT and various knowledgeable food-fluencers? What are they so excited about? I think Tatiana's high-low is great for two groups of people: a snooty Columbus Circle crowd thrilled by the novelty of elevated and safe Real New York Cuisine that makes them look woke; and well-seasoned ordinary New Yorkers who are gratified to see their culture and childhood getting its fancy due. But there are better ways to experience NYC's particular brand of global African diasporic food, and better places to have a fancy dinner. My husband is from Jamaica, where complaining about a restaurant's rendition of any Caribbean dish is something approaching a national sport. But I think he nailed Tatiana's problem when he tried the goat curry patties, hesitated for a moment, then said, "it's like ... they want to elevate this, but they haven't taken time to get the basics of a patty right yet." I'm a vegetarian who doesn't know Jamaican cuisine, but I had the same reaction to the scallion pancake: this isn't a good scallion pancake. Where's the crisp? Where's the sesame oil? Why is it so thick? You gotta nail that before you start innovating. A lot of Tatiana is fine but ordinary: a bright piri piri salad with lots of avocado, a spicy margarita that tasted like a watermelon jolly rancher, cornbread with some kind of eggy butter, okra sliced lengthwise and fried within an inch of its life, a brownie and ice cream masquerading as bodega snacks, a loud soundtrack that overpowers conversation, and decor that could have been a fancy hotel lobby in Cincinnati. I don't think I was missing anything in the long months of no reservations, and I won't be back. I get all the winks and nods to the experience of Chef Kwame's upbringing in NYC: a world of takeout Chinese food, Jamaican patty shops, egusi, bodega chopped cheeses and Hostess donettes. But I'd submit that those ordinary originals are perfect, and I found these elevated reinterpretations paradoxically ordinary. You want to experience real New York, even though you never had a student MetroCard? It's out there. Go forth!

Having no idea what we were looking at, we asked the friendly owner for some advice. After some contemplation, two of us made a plate with all beef over some jollof rice, and another with basically all chicken items over a different type of flavorful rice. We knew it was too much, but our goal was to figure out what we would come back for. Honestly, I did not enjoy most of the chicken because it's sitting in steam trays getting overcooked.
