This review is for the second location that recently opened on 9th Avenue, near 42nd Street. I have had food from this African style self-serve takeout several times, and the food is very good. The spicing can be quite different from other styles of cuisine, but whether or not you like it is a personal decision. I liked most of the food that was offered. I found the baked chicken to be excellent. The stewed chicken and the goat dish were also very good. Vegetables are all excellent...from greens to cabbage to carrots...all are delicious. The whole fish has a distinctive strong taste that took some getting used to...perhaps a lot of paprika and red pepper, but I'm not really sure...certainly a nice portion size. Felt like a big potluck dinner. Very authentic African food. I was the only white person in there. A lot of happy customers. I got a lot of everything. The watermelon was delectable and absolutely perfect. The chicken is a little bit of a dance to eat. Some of the rice was good. Some other questionable things. It all came out to $14. Honestly, you can't pick just 1 or 2 things...you have to do a big mix mash because that's just how it is. Unless you will be back multiple times to taste everything individually. Many stews with mystery items inside and again I had no idea. So I took part of what I sorta recognized. My meal was to go. I didn't get the fufu because it was $6 and I have that home that I can make,I just wanted the stew. Not much "ambiance" but it's a hole in the wall kinda vibe, nothing fancy. If you need anything from west Asian places like Afghanistan and Pakistan, B&D is your place. Here you can get rugs, rice, and tons of that charming Afghani rizz. What was my draw that day? Lamb. And as a New Jersey guy, I know going Halal is the best way to go. I needed about 3lbs, but language got in the way and I bought what I think was a quarter of a lamb that I saw sliced into chunks before my eyes. This was not a Stop'nShop experience. At the check out I asked if they had saffron. The guy blindly reached behind him and produced a 3g bag of saffron; it felt a bit elicit. And we had to wait 30 mins for the fufu to be ready so we decided to grab some of the food they already have out for you to pick and choose and pay upfront depending on the weight of your food. The vibe is simple, nothing fancy, no music but without a doubt the food is immaculate. I definitely recommend trying the okra sauce with rice or noodles, and their potatoe leaves. Those are quite flavorful so definitely dip something or mix it with vegetables to eat together. This place is buffet style with you paying by the pound. This can be good or bad depending. The first plate ended up being $7 or so which had an arrangement of different food (spinach rice, jollof rice, fish flavored rice, jerk chicken, platanos, and this curry chicken or something on the top right). The left photo I have was just jerk chicken, which cost the same amount, which is kinda crazy for just one piece. The jerk chicken was great and pretty much what I want in jerk chicken; it was juicy, tender, flavorful and tasted pretty fresh. Everything else was pretty mediocre though. Platanos was average, as good as you can expect at any place. The spinach rice, I was not a fan of at all. The fish rice I was curious about but I would not get again. The taste was a bit too fishy, but maybe that shouldn't be a complaint. The jollof rice was very dry and was very much sitting there for many many hours. I got this mustard chicken piece, which did have mustard flavor but nothing else to write home about; it was just slightly crispy mustard flavored chicken without much more depth or complexity. If I was just eating the jerk chicken, I'd give it 4.5 stars. I want the jerk chicken and I'd like to eat the jollof rice when it's fresh Aside from that, it's a pass for me. read more

Most of the dishes are either not labeled or evidently mislabeled (I think I'm savvy enough to tell if something labeled rice is clearly chicken). So instead of asking for instructions (a worker did offer but who has time for that awkwardness of asking for every dish name?), make a prayer for your stomach and hopefully you don't have any allergies because the only way to truly do this right is just grab a take out container (it's gotta be the tin halal guy bowl) and stuff whatever seems good. Not even sure what I got but the chicken, the ox tail, the sautéed greens, deep fried herbs, crunchy and fluffy plantains, and random bits of properly seasoned meats and veggies all came together to make a glorious dinner. If your in the Herald Square area regularly you should try this place sometime despite the interior. They only take cash or credit card, their Apple Pay device seems to be broken. The way it works is that you grab a plate and fill it with food then take it to the counter where they weigh it and determine its price. Don't pay attention to the labeling of food too much because it's hardly descriptive of the item your about to scoop up. They have some commercial drinks and a few home made juices, they also keep out pitchers on the tables that you can pour free water from. If you ask them for spicy sauce they keep it behind the counter and I think it's great if you can handle the heat. read more
