As we're bar crawling after a Sunday Brunch on our way down to a comedy show we stop in on this place and see all these toys that we use to play with back in the 80's....WAIT...WHAT?! Yea! TOYS! Of course we're already 3 drinks in when we arrive at the bar and just ordered our 4th one at the bar. We of course start going ham on Connect Four & Rock "em" Sock "em". This bar has a very good ambiance but... I bought 2 beers and was not aware of 20% gratuity included... I mean 1 person = 20%? So the check was $18 and I tipped $3 which working in the industry I think it's good for a bar but $6 on $15? Honestly very bad experience and a shame for a NY bar. Based on what my friend had shared with me regarding her previous experience at AWOL Bar & Grill, I had expected it to be much better than it was. We met a group of friends here this past Friday, which also happened to be St. Patrick's Day. While not an Irish bar, it was nonetheless decked out for the holiday, which included a few related specials; however, even though they were still advertising their regular happy hour of 2x1 (of the same) drinks until 9:00, upon ordering our first round we were told that they were not offering it that day. Deceitful at best, it was off-putting. Furthermore, everything was served in plastic cups, which was tasteless. However, my Smithwicks draft was good and we enjoyed our company, so even after everyone left, we decided to stay and order another round and an advertised Jameson shot special with an order of the nachos. While I ordered another Smithwicks, priced at $8 in spite of the fact that it was served in a plastic cup, she ordered a Bud Light, which was one of the few aforementioned specials, advertised at $5. The shots were advertised at $6. However, we later saw that we were charged $8 for both the Bud Light and each shot. Moreover, the shots were served in plastic, half-shot, cups. Not in the mood to dispute the charges, we instead left a 10% tip. Given the number of bars in the area and AWOL Bar & Grill's dishonest practices, I can't say I'll be back. That said, I'm still giving it two stars because the drinks and food were decent, and the service was friendly. read more

AWOL has become my absolute go-to when it comes to this area. The food is phenomenal, the staff is always friendly and the owner, Jason, seems to truly love what he does as well as genuinely looks for feedback from his customers on how to become a better bar/restaurant. At the time I'm writing this, they offer Karaoke every Tuesday and Saturday nights, which always turn out to be a blast! Definitely worth going to. read more

I went there for the first time. I liked the HH wine special but the wine was not cold enough. The beer my friend had was also not cold enough. I had flatbread, which was ok, Guacamole, which was awful, and chicken slider which was good. The service was good, but the food has to get better, and the wine and beer have got to be cold. Bought shots at this bar for me and my friends (7 in total), and they automatically charged 20% gratuity to the bill and said for big parties it's automatic. This place looks very cool on the outside, but to start it off the server or bartender female was very weird, as if she didn't wanted us there. We asked if we can have a piña colada and her excuse was it was going to come out with too much ice, she also said we couldn't have no more frozen drinks because she claims she will be busy. We felt rushed and only told her we will have 1 drink, my husbands beer was hot and my sisters margarita wasn't even offered if she wanted frozen or on the rocks. They seem to prey on people who have been drinking. The server cornered me 3 times while out with friends insisting I order an alcoholic drink. She threatened I would have to leave if I didn't order a drink. I myself hadn't purchased one but a friend had treated me to one earlier. That didn't seem to matter. Fine. I order one. Then the receipt includes a 20% gratuity in the bill AND lists "suggested gratuity" amounts to trick customers into tipping extra. Love this bar. Been here a few times and I will be returning. The staff are friendly and on the ball. The crowd is awesome and the music is perfect. Some nights they have karaoke which is also fun. Was recommended to go and on the website and google maps it says it is open on Sunday from 11:30am to 2pm. Came at 12pm and it was closed. Checked on all social media to see if it was closed, but no notice. Am disappointed as I was told the food was really good. Really wish there was a sign or a notice that it was closed today. i came to this establishment on numerous occasions with my coworker and never once was i told that i have to leave my card regardless of whether or not i wanted to start a tab. i went there once with my boyfriend and they told me i had to leave a card due to policy. granted i dont like to make assumptions so i went to speak with the manager and was told this is the policy so dont think it was a race thing. i never mentioned being racially profiled but since it was brought up by the manager it clearly was a race thing. then they dont know who works at their bar because he said they only have 3 servers when in fact i have been served by at least 4-5 different people. read more

This place is awesome! Such a good place to watch your favorite team play! We can in to watch the USC College football game on a Saturday afternoon and the owner was so accommodating and even hung out to watch the game too. There are so many tvs so no mater what you will have a great view. Happy hour has great deals for beer on draft.. including my favorite lagunitas! Great music, perfect crowd (enough people for it not to be awkward but you could still move around easily), and amazing drinks. We've made this our regular neighborhood bar and have never had a bad night there. Board games and connect four are a plus! We love it so much that I hosted my boyfriends birthday at AWOL on a Friday night in the beginning of March and the evening was perfect. I communicated with Jason before the party to go over details and when we got there he was there and showed us to our reserved location. They had a private waitress for our party which was a pleasant surprise. Julia was spectacular! Several of our friends commented on how friendly she was - not only did she get every order right, but she remembered everyone's names so there was absolutely no confusion when it came time to pay.
