TL:DR - Super solid gym. Not the newest or nicest, but definitely well kept. Wall routes were good. My only gripes have been the super inconsistent business hours (due to staffing issues, but still) and the moveable bouldering pads just are no where near adequate when the boulder gets busy. Still my go to choice in the valley as Alta is too far to go consistently.ush -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- AZR is one of the more solid rope climbing gyms in the valley. In terms of the gym itself, it isn't the nicest or cleanest gym but it isn't the dirtiest gym either. The prices for climbing are pretty average and the routes are fairly decent. The gym has a good number of auto belays scattered across the gym, and a good number of ropes so there's never a super long wait. I've been here a few times and never really had to wait to climb. I do have a few gripes, one being the bouldering area has pads that you have to move to where you're climbing. This can get annoying as it's hard to have the pads in the right place is someone is on the boulder next to you and the pad happens to overlap both problems. Most places now just have a pad built all around the bouldering area. The other issue the gyms business hours. I am not a member but come once or twice a month, and the hours are always different. The first time I came they had normal hours, the second time I came it was members only after 7 pm, now it's members only period, and then it was closed to everyone for a little bit. I understand that the hours are a result of staffing issues, but it makes it hard to even make plans with friends to go if I can't tell when I'm able to climb. All in all, I do like this gym, and even though it's a bit far for me, it is definitely a super solid gym to climb at if I knew when I'd be able to climb. read more

Climb somewhere else. You'll notice good reviews of this place ended quite awhile ago. Is the manager Nick a total dick to everyone... or did I do something special to get on his bad side? It's a weird thing. I'm not necessarily Mr Popularity everywhere I go, but I can't think of another place I've been that's straight up hostile. Especially a business where I spend several hundred dollars a year. I just want to take a moment to share my extreme disappointment in AZR. I've been a member there for... years and years and years. I've been an annual member since 2018. I supported AZR through the tough times in the pandemic and for my efforts, got my name on the wall. And an increasingly unpleasant place to climb. AZR has significantly raised rates and dramatically cut hours... and while I'm certainly grumbling about that, I was shocked that the guy there wouldn't wave my membership fee, despite being a loyal customer for the last 5 years. AZR deliberately disabled their old system to make it impossible to check one's membership status, which I'm pretty sure extended until the end of the year. Practically, I have no possible way of knowing when my membership is actually expired -- the system I used to pay and manage my account last year no longer exists, so they couldn't even tell me when my membership ended. Might be next week, might've been last week, might've been five minutes ago... who knows? They also invalidated several dozen guest passes that I'd amassed during previous annual memberships. I'd been using my passes to teach my seven year old how to climb, but despite having paid for them as part of the previous packages, they removed them due to "a change in policy." At $35/pass - the highest day pass rate in the state - they essentially "stole" several hundred dollars from me. (Still evaluating whether I want to hash this out in Small Claims court or if I should just move on.) That's a pretty shitty way to treat people. 35 DOLLAR DAY PASS.... I was raised in the area and have gone to the gym sporadically over the years. The recent ownership change has brought some poor choices to the gym. It used to be ten dollars to use the upper level training area for the spray wall, hangboards, weights, etc. Convenient for a traveling rock climber to get a productive training session. Now as a visiting climber you have to wait for "Public Hours" (only on the weekends) and pay a 35 DOLLAR FEE for access to an extremely outdated training facility. Ive been to gyms all over the country and no gym has this high of a day pass fee. Lower your prices or face losing all of the core climbers that used to frequent the gym. read more

We had been here once before, nearly a year ago and it was a good experience. We brought the kids back today and after working out the correct names on the accounts and redoing all the waivers the guy checking us in said the kids can get shoes and harnesses and head in. So they did. My daughter, who is 19 went to the guy who checked us in (some skinny little guy with glasses) answered her question then asked my 14 year old boys some questions about the equipment WHICH THEY GOT CORRECT. The guy then came over to my husband and I and tried to scold us because my daughter had asked a question saying, "if they don't feel comfortable with the equipment then you should have asked us how". I said, didn't she just ask you, he said "well yes". Ok so what exactly is the problem. I said if you want to show them the orientation video again let's do it but he said they're fine. He went on for 5 minutes straight even after I asked him if the children said they felt good to go (they said yes). So he scolded us in the middle of the climbing center because our adult daughter had a question. Great. Good job. We'll be going to Gecko Climbing Gym on N. 19th Ave. in Phoenix from now on. read more

I woke up with upper body pain this morning from yesterday event I participated and I remembered the last time I felt the similar pain was when I visited here for some indoor rock climbing fun. They are open throughout the year, ideal for hot summer here in Phoenix. Staff here is cheerful and helpful. My first time trying for indoor rock climbing, I had a great time. You secure yourself with harness. May need to get over the fear of heights but after that, just trust your harness and go up as far as you can. I got a membership here last summer and enjoy going here even though it is quite a drive for me from north Peoria but it's worth it. The climbing routes change frequently enough so that you're never really bored, but routes are still around for a couple weeks or slightly longer so you have more than one chance to practice certain routes. Often, my challenge is that I feel some climbs were designed for a taller climber's reach, but it's good because it forces me to work on my technique more. I love how the gym is so family friendly. It's cute seeing kids climb like they were born to do it! I think even as a adult, I find climbing so entertaining because it does feel like being a kid again! The staff is super friendly and helpful and they are constantly on the floor checking on everyone if they need assistance. Who could ask for more? read more

Wow. So, never knew about ninja warrior training (show is only 10 years old..I'm just oblivious) and never knew the stuff I do for fun was a thing! Went straight upstairs and had some private instruction from Scott. Did some warmups then we were ready to go! Let's see if I'm as ready as I thought... I actually practice monkey bars regularly at my gym. They are staggered heights and I would go back and fourth. After a year of gradual gains I was finally able to test my skills at AZ on the rocks! Made it across the entire monkey bar setup on my 1st try so I said hmmm let's do salmon ladder! Ninja stuff isn't too tough ... On TV the salmon ladder is a pull up bar you bring up a level higher each rep. I figured no problem ..I do weighted pullups now! WRONG! PROBLEM! It was crazy hard. Missed first 6 times but on that lucky 7th. Woo hoo! 1 rep and I was thankful for it but. Yeah, not ready for TV like I thought I was. Next was ring toss. Swinging side to side moving rings. Easy I thought. WRONG. hard as bort! (Google and use in word w friends) on 2nd try I made it halfway then the ring swing was next. Easy...WRONG...well you get the idea. Then there was peg board, log roll, bosu ball, rings. I can actually go on and this was only a 1 hour experience! They actually change obstacles so you can work with new challenges. ***UPDATE*** I'm now officially hooked! Been to 3 classes now and the instructors and fellow ninjas are amazing! Didn't realize I was in class with a famous TV finalist until the AZ Central article from SEPT 1, 2018 came out about this new sport. It's just like on TV. You really cheer each other on in earnest! The instructors Steve and Doug are fantastic! Amazing how much they can make it look easy! After these lessons, doing a 5 ft lache (fly in air to grab another object (bar)) is now super fun instead of super scary! Just a month ago I couldn't lache a 1 ft span in a monkey bar setup. Now I fly around in my normal gym like a monkey! Here's a pic of a 5 ft lache in mid air! What a liberating feeling even if only for less than a second. That's what I'm hooked on. You won't find a better gym, with more knowledgeable staff, anywhere in the valley. Everyone here prides themselves on being climbers who teach from experience. This isn't the type of place that hires random people with zero to little climbing experience and you can rest assured that if you're being asked to adhere to any policies that it's both for your own good and for your own safety, as safety is at the forefront of everything that AZR stands for. There are newer gyms in the valley that might offer a little more in certain areas (taller walls, newer equipment, etc...) But you won't find a gym that makes you feel more like home and that welcomes everyone, regardless of race, physical condition, sexual orientation, etc... whether you're looking to try climbing for the first time, or are a seasoned vet whose looking to hone his/her/their skills as a climber, AZR is one place you'll be glad you visited. My wife and I have been members of AZR for a little over two years. We absolutely love the staff, route setters, and the relationships that we have built with the community. The staff are incredibly kind, knowledgeable, and welcoming. The route setters create lots of diverse climbs and have been changing out routes regularly. The clientele is also very supportive, we have made so many friends over the years; all skill levels are welcome here. AZR also has a great mix of ropes and bouldering, is kept very clean, and color-code their routes. Auto belay routes are diverse and are reset every 6 weeks. This place is a bit far for me, but worth the drive for an indoor activity for sure... especially in the hot AZ summer. I recently took my kids (4 and 6) for a party. (They have a small private party room that worked out well for the time before and after climbing!) We all climbed and enjoyed! I felt the staff were friendly and the facility was safe... we even watched a safety video before getting out there. In addition to climbing of all levels, AZ on the Rocks offers yoga and several other activities. The parking situation is not great, but a little more exercise never hurt anyone. They have vending machines and allow outdoor food, but plan ahead for your own snacks or meals if you're heading here for more than a few hours. So much fun! I enjoyed my evening with AZ on the Rocks much more than I expected. The owner was super kind and friendly, had a great sense of humor and kept us all really entertained! After a quick vocal over view and a detailed short video, we were given a harness and shoes and sent off into the rock climbing room! There were plenty of staff members around and available at all times to assist in climbing. I started off on one of the easier climbs and ended up climbing to the top of some pretty difficult ones by the end of the night. Thanks to the super encouraging staff, I kept going when I wanted to stop. I even did the free fall jump! It was so fun. Upstairs there is an obstacle course America ninja warrior style, a little too difficult for me but yet was fun to watch. Great spot for a family night out, or as a way to stay active! this place is mainly for kids. serious climbers should go somewhere else. based off my experience, this place overcharges for their day passes, is poorly managed, smells, and has a rude worker. i bought a monthly pass w the intent on top rope climbing and with the summer coming i thought this would be the perfect time. with about 4 months of sport climbing experience i thought i would be fine. but nope, the short man with a lisp told me he needed to test me and my buddy before we started. i said that's fine but after only testing my buddy and not testing me, he then proceeded to tell me we were not qualified and he was too busy to help us out. after that he walked to the desk area and just sat down. need to say for someone being so busy, he wasn't doing anything at all. i then cancelled my membership because my goal was to top rope climb and not bouldering. he laughed at what i said and proceeded to give me my money back. any good customer service i have experienced does not involve a worker just flat out being rude. this guy wasn't trying to be nice at all and didn't even ask why. i don't think this guy knows how to communicate to people clearly or doesn't know customer service at all. i would recommend any climber to go outside and climb than to go to this place and waste your money and time. there is better bouldering at focus climbing center and the staff is 100% more friendly. read more

This place is so good! It's so close to where we live which is even better. They have members that competed on american ninja warrior including myself and guess what, they setup a grip gauntlet so that you can also level up for ninja warrior. The youth team is here every night so expect that you'll see kids crushing climbs you probably can't. Don't get discouraged the kids are actually nice and focused. The team doesn't just win numerous comps for no reason. They also have a great yoga room upstairs as well as campus board and squat rack, bench, dumbells up to 100 lbs. This is an incredible rock-climbing gym!! It's enormous - tons of walls, many different courses, boulders and slacklines. The loaner equipment and ropes, etc. are nice, the staff is friendly and they have a video and quick lesson for first-time climbers. There are lockers for your stuff, or you can leave valuables with the staff. It's a wonderful place to go in a group - I've been there with large and small groups and everyone always has a great time. They have kids courses and courses ranging in difficulty from easy to "how do they do that?". There's tons of mat space to sit down and stretch in between, too. They have a small shop, a few vending machines, and clean restrooms. There's even an upstairs area with a gym and yoga studio (check out Jen Brooks - excellent teacher). The only small annoyance is that, if you are an expert, their way of belaying is a little different from the norm, and you might get harrassed by staff insisting you do things exactly their way. This place is great for rock climbing! I ended up here by chance with some friends and I happened to love it. Rock climbing is one of my hobbies now although, as a first time, is not easy. I recommend this place if you want to let go of your fear of heights and challenge yourself a step forward. There are all sorts of "climbing trails" for beginners and experts. This place also offers a fitness center as well as yoga classes. The staff here is great, very courteous and ready to help if you need them. Parking is not abundant, however you can also park across the street for additional spaces. Be aware, the few times I was here, it was always crowded, so sometimes there's the line for a particular climb but it's no biggie. The only reason I don't give five stars is the price of the membership: $72 a month is basically taking advantage (in my humble opinion). However if you really love rock climbing and you come here a lot, go for it! read more

WOW! We went there for their 11th Anniversary party on Sunday. Climbing was free all day. They had face painting for the kids and a bounce house. Pita Jungle catered the free lunch and for desert they brought in an ice cream truck. It was definitely a birthday party atmosphere. Which apparently they host children's birthday parties too. I had been to a few climbing places, but I was impressed by the design of this location. It was build with the feel of a canyon and not just a simple climbing practice wall. Seventeen months of membership at AZ on the Rocks and I'm loving every second of it! I usually start my evenings with a few auto-belay warm ups, followed by top-rope climbing with my climbing friends, the maybe leading a route or two, bouldering to round out the climbing, and then slacklining or hangboarding - there are so many options at AZ on the Rocks! I also take yoga classes on some Tuesday and Thursday evenings - those classes are focused on the needs of rock climbers and the instructors always ask what we want to do! The climbing routes are changed frequently, the employees are knowledgeable, the route setters are phenomenal climbers themselves, the climbing holds are new, and the auto-belays and ropes are of very high quality.
