ACBVI Group photo after our event.

At the Arizona Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired (ACBVI), we strive to give our clients new experiences that change the way they view themselves and overcome obstacles in their daily lives. To help advance our mission, we recently planned an event to take our clients rock climbing at AZ on the Rocks where they were extremely helpful and considerate of what we were trying to achieve for our ACBVI family on that trip! The AZ on the Rocks teams' dedication to accessibility and inclusivity was very evident from the planning stages through to execution and made for an incredible event for both ACBVI clients as well as all volunteers and staff. The gym's facilities were very clean, and well-organized, with a variety of climbing walls suitable for all of our clients' skill levels. The instructors were patient, encouraging, and great at providing helpful tips that ensured our members felt confident and safe while climbing. Through this event, ACBVI clients overcame their fears and achieved their goals, thanks in large part to the support from the staff at AZ on the Rocks. They truly exceeded our expectations, and the feedback from our clients has been overwhelmingly positive. We highly recommend this gym and look forward to future trips here! -ACBVI

Amazing! We had SO much fun at AZ on the rocks. As a group of inexperienced climbers we felt so taken care of and really enjoyed our day. Very much so recommend for climbers of all expertise levels- the staff is enthusiastic and supportive!

I woke up with upper body pain this morning from yesterday event I participated and I remembered the last time I felt the similar pain was when I visited here for some indoor rock climbing fun. They are open throughout the year, ideal for hot summer here in Phoenix. Staff here is cheerful and helpful. My first time trying for indoor rock climbing, I had a great time. You secure yourself with harness. May need to get over the fear of heights but after that, just trust your harness and go up as far as you can. They have different skill levels of courses available, fun place to visit for all levels.

Done climbing and taking a pic in the bouldering section!

I got a membership here last summer and enjoy going here even though it is quite a drive for me from north Peoria but it's worth it. The climbing routes change frequently enough so that you're never really bored, but routes are still around for a couple weeks or slightly longer so you have more than one chance to practice certain routes. Often, my challenge is that I feel some climbs were designed for a taller climber's reach, but it's good because it forces me to work on my technique more. I love how the gym is so family friendly. It's cute seeing kids climb like they were born to do it! I think even as a adult, I find climbing so entertaining because it does feel like being a kid again! The staff is super friendly and helpful and they are constantly on the floor checking on everyone if they need assistance. Who could ask for more?

    Ninja gym upstairs!

The rooms range from activities that have strength, brain teasers, teamwork, and more. It's such a great bonding opportunity and allows you to have fun with whoever you bring with phones down. Parking is NO issue at all at this location. They have so many spots available given the strip outlet location it's in. I do recommend not wearing any thick or heavy clothes and bringing as little items as possible, because you will be moving A LOT and sweating will be your enemy. They have a bar and restaurant as well, but we didn't get a chance to go. Definitely will be back, and next time need to go for 4 hours! I think we did 2 hours and it didn't feel like enough time.

The premise is similar to an escape room, but there are several themed, interactive rooms that you try to progress through. Each room has a 3 minute time limit and if you pass the first challenge, a door opens to another room. Each themed room has 3 challenges total. We all had a lot of fun working together as a team. The rooms are hard to complete (at least for us lol) and some of the rooms required more physical ability. There are employees there to help you as requested, which helps if you get stuck on what you're supposed to do. The rooms are well put together, theme-wise, which adds to the experience of the challenges. There were a lot of people there, which meant a long waiting time. I feel as though we did more waiting than we did inside the rooms. Although, it didn't help that several rooms broke or weren't functioning correctly throughout the night. There's also a bar in the back where you can grab drinks and food, if you so choose. I would recommend waiting until after the experience since you have a 2 hour time limit. Overall, Bam Kazam is a unique activity to get a group of friends or family together for a night of fun and challenges! I would definitely go back again, but perhaps on a weekday or a time that would be less busy.

You can tell it was designed to be a special place, and on the surface, it truly is adorable. That said, my experience left me feeling uneasy, mostly due to cleanliness and supervision concerns. I witnessed multiple children putting toys in their mouths (which is totally normal for kids), but what was concerning was that those same toys were often placed right back into shared play areas. While I later learned there is a designated bin for toys that have been in kids' mouths, this wasn't communicated upfront, and I didn't see it being consistently used or enforced. There also seemed to be inconsistency when it came to staff involvement. Across my two visits, I did see some staff members actively cleaning up and returning toys to their proper places, which I appreciated. However, I also observed others simply picking up toys and dropping them into corners of the rooms without any real organization or sanitizing. I completely understand that keeping up with kids is a challenge--I'm a parent too--but that's where consistent staff engagement becomes really important. Another issue was the level of parental supervision. Many parents were on their phones while their kids played freely. Again, that's ultimately a parenting responsibility, but in a shared environment like this, it contributes to the overall hygiene and safety concerns. I also want to mention that I found the staff presentation a bit unprofessional, which added to the overall impression that things weren't being closely managed. To be fair, you do sign a waiver regarding illness, and I understand that no play space can be completely germ-free. However, I did end up contracting chickenpox exactly 10 days after visiting, which makes me seriously question the effectiveness of their cleaning and sanitizing practices. Overall, this place is incredibly cute and full of potential. With more consistent staff involvement, clearer communication, better sanitization systems, and encouragement for parents to stay engaged, it could be an amazing environment. Right now, though, it falls short of what it could and should be.
