    vegan jollof rice
    Joanna C.

Came with my friends to try West African cuisine for the first time and we had a great experience. We walked in not knowing what to order, but our server was patient and helpful, answering our questions and offering recommendations. Interior design was warm and inviting. We started with the vegetable nem, which came with a tangy tamarind dipping sauce and was okay. The Brussels sprouts were also just okay, but the sauces that came with the appetizers definitely elevated the dishes. For mains, we tried Azara's cassava and plantain fufu with a peanut butter lamb stew, which was delicious and tasted exactly as I expected. I liked the plantain fufu more than the cassava. We also ordered the jollof rice, with chicken on the side (chicken was kind of dry). My friend found the rice a bit dry, but I thought it was savory and fragrant. Overall, a memorable experience.

Absolutely delicious West African food! Wow! The chef here - from Burkina Faso - really knows what he is doing. Stunning find. Highly recommended! Maffe lamb - so tender with the tastiest sauce. Jollof w/ fish - so delicious! Best I've had outside of Senegal. Service was friendly and accommodating.

This place was super clean and pretty inside. Great for lunch or dinner with friends family or even a date. The server was super knowledgeable and friendly. The fufu was delicious I would recommend it 10/10.

Food was tasty rather small portion but I ordered pick up instead of dining in. Ordered online & it was ready quickly.

These awesome folks were kind enough to take a late night Galentine's reservation for myself and 5 friends. We ordered the Branzino (2), jollof rice, spinach, sticky wings, quinoa salad, Alfredo chicken, and plantains. My goodness. Everything was stellar! Service was friendly and timely. The owner was kind enough to gift of three desserts: the tiramisu, carrot cake, and the creme brûlée. So good! And what a sweet gesture. Proud to have spots like this in my neighborhood.

Came here on a Thursday around 3pm. Slow time of the day and got sat immediately. Food took 40 mins for our party of 4 but came out smoking hot. Carrots tasted so fresh like it came out the garden. That branzino is elite, definitely better than my lamb which was also pretty good. Wouldve loved a little more lamb but not complaining. Would've swapped it out if i knew beforehand Plantains very good, tasted authentic. The jollof rice might've been the worst thing but that's like picking what stood out least from everything being great Ok just had another bite of that fish The Brussels sprouts smell u can feel in your mouth. Bacon bits and sauce on the side added to it. The whole table enjoyed them My friends who live here say they going to be coming back early and often

This place is cozy and special. Like walking into a gourmet kitchen. The vegan jollof was the choice this trip! Along with their house made hot ginger tea! I love the density and texture of the rice! Super appreciate that perfection! Service is attentive and quick. Winter is gonna be great here! They have soup!!

Lamb and Jollof rice. It was delicious but I forgot to take a picture before I started.

A must try. We had chicken Alfredo and jollof rice in lamb. The service was amazing. The people are friendly. The chef and owner greeted us. You won't be disappointed.

Azara kitchen was great in some aspects but average and others. My sister, a friend and I went on a random weekday so it was not crowded. We ordered way too much food, but don't eat West African food often and were enticed by all the options. First and foremost, the ginger juice is easily some of the best that I've had and is super tasty. Now, as for the food- both the cassava and plantain fufu were absolutely delicious. Please use your hands when you eat this, you'd be doing yourself a disservice if you don't. The jollof was also super tasty and I could honestly just order this with a side of plantains and be satisfied- it's just that good. However, the mains fell short. The maffe lamb's stew was very tasty but the actual lamb was very scarce. For the price point and location this was disappointing. We also had Cassandra's poisson which is supposed to be one of their signature main dishes but was very lackluster at best. The fish was super dry and not tasty. All in all, aforementioned, the food here is very hit or miss but it definitely seems like a trend that the mains are subpar to the appetizers, so if I were to visit again I'd just order a bunch of appetizers instead.

Azara is a very nice spot in Harlem for African fusion. They have fresh juices, along with a barista bar and a few couple staple sodas. The restaurant is nicely decorated, with 2 tops along one side and a few 4 tops in the back. The cafe was super clean and had a large mirror in the back for a selfie! Everything we ordered was fresh and cooked to order. Our table ate a little of this, a little of that...and we enjoyed all of it. The plantains were crisp and hot, the rice was flavorful and seasoned well. I had the fried fish dish. It was dusted in flour and cooked perfectly, the spices were on point and the presentation was beautiful. Our table was large and it was a Saturday, so food took a bit to prepare, and so the waiter was communicative and very polite. They took time to remember each guests order, give us separate checks and was interested in our group outing. It was a nice experience to try something new.

This is one of a very few nice sit down restaurants for West African food. I wouldn't be ashamed to bring a date here. High recommend the lamb dish- I think it was call Dibi. It's a bone in fried lamb dish paired with sweet plantain. The savory of the meat with the balance of the sweet plantain is amazing.

    Their avocado toast is spectacular.

Hands down one of my favorite places in the neighborhood. The food is fantastic (especially, of course, the jollof) and the staff is always kind, attentive, and with the right recommendations.

SLAMMED. I've been walking past Azara for a few months as it made its debut on Lenox Ave., admiring its simple but elegant fast casual decor, always planning to stop in and never getting around to it. Finally, after moving into a new apartment on my block and having to order takeout every day while we're living out of boxes, we ordered dinner from here. My daughter and I both got the jollof rice with lamb. And we both expressed our delight out loud upon the first bite! This is some of the best tasting food I have had in a while..just delicious, every morsel! And they do not lie when they say that lamb is tender and it falls right off the bone. They don't give you a lot of it, but there is a ton of well seasoned rice and just enough vegetables on the side...well worth it. Thumbs up thumbs up thumbs up!

This spot is located inside an African museum. It is a small place when you walk in. The food is all cooked and laid out on trays. My fiancé ordered a Yassa Yassa Grilled Chicken Bowl and I ordered a custom bowl. The delivery was very quick and it got to where we were faster than I expected which was a plus. Service was very good! I got a call saying one of the sauces I wanted was out unfortunately but they were helpful in providing me with alternatives. The Yassa Yassa bowl was very delicious, full of bold flavors, and a beautiful contrast between the spicy aromatic jollof, the sweet plantains, and the tangy onion sauce. The chicken in this bowl was definitely a little overdone and could have used more flavor. For my custom bowl, I got a chicken suya bowl with jollof as my base, plantains and the kale stew (Efo riro ) as sides and initially wanted the peanut (mafe) sauce which they were out of so I also tried the yassa or onion sauce. My bowl was absolutely delicious! Same bold flavors as the first bowl but the chicken was juicy, tender, and well spiced. Made all the difference! Both came with a nice chimichurri like spicy sauce called rof which I really enjoyed since it added a spicy, herbal, bright kick to the bowl. This place has amazing flavor and is very filling! I love the fast casual nature of it and how nourishing it feels. This is basically a Chipotle but West African inspired. The portion of meat was very generous in each bowl which was nice. The jollof was amazing! Highly recommend trying one of their suya meats since the seasoning is incomparable! Will be going back again for more bowls in the future.

Chef Kwame Onwuachi's Afro-Caribbean masterpiece tucked inside Lincoln Center is the kind of meal that makes you go quiet mid-bite. We ordered the Bodega Special, oxtails, Mom Duke's shrimp, the wings, and the collards, and every single dish was a 10 out of 10. No weak links. No "it's fine." Just plate after plate of food that made me want to stand up and applaud. (We're at Lincoln Center, it felt appropriate.) The oxtails were fall-off-the-bone tender with a rich, glossy sauce that had layers I'm still thinking about. Mom Duke's shrimp arrived dramatic and beautiful, whole shrimp in a deeply spiced sauce that felt simultaneously fancy and deeply soulful. The collards were unlike any I've had. Complex broth, perfect greens, gorgeous presentation with edible flowers that somehow made the dish feel even more intentional. How is a bowl of collards this exciting?! And then. THE WINGS. I don't throw around "best wings of my life" lightly. I have eaten a LOT of wings. These wings broke my brain. That glaze, that crunch, those dipping sauces. I genuinely don't know what Chef Kwame did to them but it should be illegal. Life changing. I will be back for the wings alone. The room is stunning, the plating is stunning, the whole vibe is fun and lively and cool without trying too hard. This is the best meal I've had in New York in years, and I live here. Book it the second Resy drops the reservations. Do not sleep on it. Do whatever it takes to get a table. You will not regret it.

I've had this restaurant on my list for a couple of years now being a Caribbean gal and all, and I am always looking to support Chefs that have similar roots to me and are doing big thanggggs, and finally, I was able to dine at the infamous Tatiana making my foodie bucket list dreams come true. Shout out to my super cool hubby who made one call and was able to get us a last minute reservation that very weekend we were in town. Thanks hubby and thanks JB! So - From the moment we arrived and paid our bill, we received exquisite service, with complimentary champagne provided when we were seated, tasty dishes sent out for us to try and even a visit by Chef Kwame himself. Seems like a hardworking and respectable person and it's nice to see his dreams come to fruition. I noticed that he made his rounds visiting nearly every table and allowing photo opps for folks to post on their social media channels. Made it a nice, memorable touch and to me it shows his gratitude to his diners / supporters. I def made sure to get a pic too of course. All the staff were sweet and attentive and made us feel like VIP. Neo, our server, was great! Food: My faves were the curry goat patties, hamachi, brown stew chicken, rice and peas (reminds me of my uncle's), and the jerk lamb rib. Vibes: Super jumpin'. Gave me lounge vibes with R&B hits playing all night long. I couldn't stop singing, then chewing, then dancing, then sippin' lol The only negatives were that the bathrooms were not well maintained toward the mid-to end of the evening. I broke the seal thanks to the alchy flowing lol, so I visited the unisex bathrooms a few times and they got progressively grimier thanks to some dudes who couldn't control their stream and pee'd all over the seat and floor. Gross. I am sure that was just a rare occurrence though. And another negative is the reservation process in general. The Resy booking site to book Tatiana is super annoying, making it extremely difficult to make a reservation in advance for the dates/times you actually want to visit. I've tried on many occasions but have never been successful w getting a reservation even when I time it perfectly. Apparently I am always seconds off or something. Seems like bots have taken over the booking site or wondering if Tatiana intentionally blocks tables for celebs/VIP where the only way to get in is to know someone or wait in their line (which I simply won't do). I personally hate calling people for favors to get in to places, because I feel like I shouldn't have to put in so much effort or get others involved in my plans, so definitely put a sour taste in my mouth. However, Group bookings seem to be more promising, which makes sense as that automatically brings in more revenue. Seems like a lot of trendy NYC restaurants are like this though. Being from LA, I am able to get a reservation at any restaurant I want to go to with at least 3 weeks advance notice (even n/Naka which is notoriously hard to book), but in NYC, snagging a reservation at a popular place is a royal pain in the backside. Makes it hard for an out of towner like me to plan a proper itinerary... Nevertheless, Tatiana by Kwame is definitely a fun, upscale Afro-Caribbean restaurant to visit (if you can score a reservation) with bumpin' R&B songs, great dining room service and delicious eats. Great for a fun birthday dinner with friends who like food. Looking forward to trying his newest dining venture, Maroon, in Las Vegas next! Love that it's only a 45 min flight away from LA. Yay! The setup inside this dimly lit restaurant had a bunch of steam tables offering various beef and chicken dishes, a handful of rice options, and a bunch of salads/fruits. Having no idea what we were looking at, we asked the friendly owner for some advice. After some contemplation, two of us made a plate with all beef over some jollof rice, and another with basically all chicken items over a different type of flavorful rice. We knew it was too much, but our goal was to figure out what we would come back for. Honestly, I did not enjoy most of the chicken because it's sitting in steam trays getting overcooked. Not saying they were terrible, but it all fails in comparison to all the great beef offerings. OMG! You really can't go wrong with any of the beef dishes. My cuisine rating is really based on the various beef items, the yummy veggies, and both amazing rice. The fufu is your utensil. You pinch a piece, dip it into a stew, and that's your bite. I didn't get a stew this time so I kind of freestyled it... dipped mine into the jollof rice with that tomato/meat sauce they put on top and grabbed some lamb. Still hit. One thing to know: there's no traditional restroom setup to wash your hands. They'll bring out a bucket of water and liquid soap so you can clean up at the table. It's normal, but if that's not your thing, just bring hand sanitizer and you'll be good.

The jollof rice was a simple rendition of perfectly seasoned, fluffy rice that packed deep West African spice with every bite. The accompanying red chicken stew was addictively tangy and had enough spice to singe the taste buds. So yummy. The spinach had an unctuous vegetative flavor that paired nicely with the dough-y mellow fufu. The only thing I didn't like was the bits of fish cooked in that still contained bones. Felt like I had to be cautious going through the spinach. The big fried fish pieces were simple and tasty but had a similar but lesser problem. A bit of a first world problem, I know, but it makes the experience just slightly less enjoyable. The hibiscus drink was perfumed with floral sweet and sour. Service: Service was immaculate. The wonderful staff behind the counter asked if it was our first time and had us sampling all the different rices and stews/soups to make sure we liked what we ordered. Ambiance: Very much a hole in the wall in East Harlem with very few tables. Simple but effective. The predominant foot traffic was all the food service drivers coming in and out of the establishment (which there was a healthy flow of).
