My mother in law treated us for a last day of vacation dinner. Awful. Gloopy, overcooked pasta, overcooked meat on the grill combination. The waitress was just atrocious. This actually seems pretty typical in Gloucester though. It seems like a lot of the restaurants hire college kids and give them little training and supervision. First time trying this place and this cuisine and am thrilled we were adventurous! We started off with the house red Sangria carafe and as others pointed out, not super sugary and def refreshing on hot summer night! Appetizers were the mussels and the red sauce was AMAZING! Bread and oil dip was pretty good too. Hubby got the Bife Toureiro (Bull Fighter Steak) - he loved it and said the steak was super tender and cooked perfect. Also the fries/chips were really good. He asked for ketchup for his fries but ended up using them to sop of the yummy sauce. I got the Salmon Senape - a humongous slab of salmon with a creamy mushroom sauce. and the authentic punch potatoes. The salmon was cooked perfectly, sauce was really good. Only thing I would ask for more mushrooms. Also, there was a bit much olive olive pooled on my plate. But other than that the plate was really good! Actually I couldnt even finish it. We didnt do dessert, too full even if we wanted lol. We sat at a lone table behind the hostess bar and right at the entry of the kitchen, was really noisy but was cool to see the kitchen and it workings. PLUS to view all the amazing plates coming out! Service was above average and it seemed our waitress perked up a bit after we said we wanted a true authentic experience. She happily pointed out some of the faves on the menu. And on final note, as we were waiting for the bill to be processed the hostess came around from the stand and chatted a bit more with us. This place has very good food. However, the service is terrible. Our waiter was very good while working as a bartender AND a waiter. There were two other women there that I saw as "waitresses". The place was not busy and I understand that we still have Corona around. We were outside. From the beginning now. I walked in with my family and the lady who greeted us was very rude. She barely spoke and we wanted to sit outside. When we were speaking she picked up the phone for a couple seconds and didn't even say anything. We told her that we wanted to sit in the shade and she brought us to a table that only had seats with the sun shining on your face. She brought us to the table left menus and left as fast as she could. We moved to the shade since the table was open since it was clear she did not want to come back or assist us. Our waiter came after about 5-10 minutes and we ordered our drinks. They took about 15 minutes to have our drinks arrive. We then ordered appetizers and they came back after 20 minutes. We ordered bread and oil as well as the grilled octopus. We finished the bread fast as there was only 6 slices. No extra plates or silverware were brought to us. I DO NOT blame the waiter at all because he was waiting most tables and as I said, bartending at the same time. We asked another lady - - not the greeter lady who also cleaned tables - - who was a "waitress" for more bread. Our waiter came a couple minutes after her so we could order our food. The food came about 30-45 minutes after we ordered as well as the bread. One of my family members got the Portugese Soup. It was very good but some pepper would have been nice. I asked the same lady again who was walking by and asked her "Could you please bring some pepper over for us?" She replied with a rude tone and mean/confused face while saying "What?" I then told her "Black Pepper? Like the spice?" She said "Oh" still in that mean/confused face and left. The pepper came when we were done with our food so about 20 minutes later since we were also having a conversation while eating. I noticed a table near us with the same issue with this same lady. They got part of her order wrong. This lady just went dropped off the food and ran as fast as she could the same way with the greeter lady. The woman who had her order brought to her wrong was calling to her "My order is wrong!" The lady said "Okay" and continued to leave. "The woman said no, not okay!" Apparently the lady meant "I will bring you the correct one." Anyways we ordered Pasta with Butter and Grilled Chicken, Mediterranean Salad with Buffalo Chicken, Portugese Soup, the Shrimp Pizza, Grilled Octopus, the Grilled Linguiça, Bread and Oil. I can not say anything about the food because it was excellent. I can however say the service was very bad. In conclusion, we spent 2 hours here the majority of the time waiting. Upon the suggestion of the waitress we tried their small plate appetizer with 6 different appetizers, The Tapas Tower. Honestly , my only regret is that I don't live closer. This would be a go to place. Most of our a tapas were with a seafood flair. But, the fave beans with the Portuguese sausage....whaaaat???? Unbelievable. Lovely glasses of wine, rounded out the meal. The evening was beautiful so upon entering this Portuguese restaurant we asked to be seated on the patio. I had a pair of coupons printed off the restaurant's website that provided an early-bird discount on either a tower of tapas or Caldeirada, a seafood stew. We received a complimentary plate with bread, olives and EVO and ordered a Mediterranean salad to share. The salad included olives, tomatoes, romaine lettuce, basil, red onions, cucumber and feta in a balsamic-based dressing. The Caldeirada proved to be an excellent choice as it included an abundance of fresh mussels, little necks, haddock, calamari, shrimp and scallops in a chunky tomato-based broth. read more

I had dinner at Azorean tonight with my parents and my fiancé. After all was said and done we decided that we'd definitely be back. Prices were very fair and portion size was just right. Soon after meeting our waitress we knew she'd be a good hostess for our first visit and we were definitely pleased with her service. The dipping oil to complement their bread was some of the best I've ever had. We shared the cheese sampler and fava bean tapas. The cheeses were very good and the others really enjoyed the fava beans. I ordered the Surf and Turf. I would describe it as just okay. This was our first time at Azorean, a quick lunch in December. Two orders of monkfish filet with roast potatoes and zucchini in a rich tomato sauce. It was really wonderful, so good we ordered two sandwiches to take away for later. Some miscommunication on the sandwiches: I asked for chouriço (forgetting that the sausage sandwich on the lunch menu was linguiça, not chouriço), and ended up with the beef version instead. Only discovered that later--the beef version also was great, not a big pile of beef but the relish, fried egg and fresh bun made it seem right. Looking forward to returning at the dinner hour and having one of several cataplana that they offer (years ago we were in the Algarve and had cataplana everywhere we went). read more

Gosh if I give it so many stars maybe my favorite won't be there when I want it. Azorean is good food that you know is handmade. I always get octopus and I am very particular about my octopus. I believe dining out is getting something that you would not make at home and octopus is a bit time consuming to make. I get my dish ordered special since I have stomach issues and every time they make it homemade for me, exactly how I asked and it is delicious. The house wine is good as well and I am happy to say they give a generous pour. The reason why this place is busy. Locals know a good meal. A lot of us know how to cook. read more

Fantastic late lunch at the Azorean. First time here. Greeted warmly and seated promptly. We started with the calamari and a bottle of Julia James Chard. Both delicious. We loved the garlicy pepper sauce on the calamari. Shared the Mediterranean Salad and the Spanish Cataplana. Both were outstanding but the Cataplana (A stew cooked in a clamshell pan) was a show stopper; a mix of calamari, mussels, littlenecks, chicken and chorizo with rice in a saffron broth. The shellfish were delicious, melt in your mouth and everything was cooked perfectly. It was like a cross between a Paella and a Cioppino. Outstanding. First, we ordered fried calamari as appetizer, which we had to eat with our hands, because the waiter didn't bring cutlery after serving the dish; on his way to get us cutlery he then stopped for a long chat with other patrons, at which point our food had gotten cold. For the main course we ordered different kinds of the cataplana signature dish, which disappointingly had little flavor. The various fish were delicious, but overall the dish lacked depth. It's hard to find any fault with this excellent restaurant so I won't. An easy 5 stars! Any day the Azorean is worth the trip. Tuesday is $5 tapas day. The choices are all fresh off the boat or out of the garden. I tried the lobster roll tapas - 2 huge sandwiches and the fried yellow tail sole with lemon cream. While the cream could have used more zest to deliver a bang it was very generous and flavorful without. The lobster roll was perfect. Nothing more need or should be said. The Spicy Cusk Caldeirada was obviously right off the boat and so tasty it gave the lobster roll a run for the best plate. The octopus fritters were excellent. I prefer octopus el natural. By this point I ran out of gas, or stomach room with plenty of leftovers. Next time I'll try others - many looked good. The martini's are worth ordering if you enjoy such drinks. Tried Azorean for the first time for our 10th wedding anniversary. We got everything Togo. When we arrived we received friendly service write away. Our food was perfectly wrapped. When we got back to our hotel, the food was piping hot and absolutely delicious. It was above and beyond the best meals we've had since The Covid era. Oh yes! The desserts were phenomenal as well.
