Salad was good and plenty for one person. All the pizzas took a long time to get served and they were more of pizzas made on pre made base rather than fresh base. Taste wise salad was 4/5. The American Pizza was 2.5/5. La Portuguesa was 2/5 and the Azorean was 3.5/5. Ambience was more of a bar rather than a family restaurant. It has very compact sitting arrangement inside. An excellent Portuguese restaurant in Gloucester. This restaurant is a well-known Family Restaurant over the years and all I can say is the food is delicious and really authentic. The prices are very affordable and match the quality of food. It's a really nice neighborhood and family restaurant and I enjoyed my Azorean steak and they have some excellent small dishes like squid salad, and garlic shrimp. They have also some good house red wine from Portugal. I recommend this to anybody who wants some good Portuguese food. read more

Very nice location and ambiance. Stopped here for lunch on a trip through Gloucester. As someone who is Portuguese and has had authentic Portuguese food, I was a little let down by the choices and the dishes we ordered. The food was good, tasty, came out hot. But the flavor just wasn't what we are used to having for Portuguese dishes. The desserts were better. The pasteis de nata are hands down the best I've had in Massachusetts. We were given a gift certificate for the Azorean for our 50th wedding anniversary. It was mid-pandemic, May 2020. We got around to trying to use it in early October. They had no record of the transaction. We eventually contacted the grifters and got their credit card info and worked it all thru, we thought. We left with a gift card in hand. We had the private event room booked for my grandfathers 90th birthday about a month in advance. On the day of, we entered the restaurant and we're told there was another party that was booked for our same time and we were essentially forced to leave because the people in our party are elderly and cannot be in a shared space as it is loud and crowded. Ambiance seems nice. Staff were nice but a little too busy at the end of our meal. My major complaint was in the quality of food. Food was served at a lukewarm temperature. My dish came with two little, slightly bigger than an egg, barely warm red potatoes. Definitely didn't look fresh. Potatoes are a staple and big deal in Portuguese food. I was surprised that they were not more generous with the serving of a basic staple and that it was barely warm. I was expecting to seem more authentic dishes. There were a lot of octopus dishes but not bacalhau (salted cod). Sorry, can't have a real Portuguese restaurant without bacalhau. Also, there was a big black fly buzzing around our table. read more

The best spot in Gloucester in my book. I call it my hidden gem on Cape Anne. The food it amazing and true to a Portuguese taste palate. Good bar with full selection of liquors, beer & wines. There isn't a bad dish in the menu. I love the clams & chorizo & octopus appts. They have a tower of tapas which you can select various dishes to sample. Seafood is very Fresh and never frozen (I'm told). Worth the drive up from Boston for an excursion or even a cool train ride as the restaurant sits by the stop. read more

Although I live somewhat far away, I've been coming here since they opened in 2006. Initially, it was a thrill to find Azorean and Portuguese food. My favorite was the Azorean steak. The calamari was excellent. Unfortunately there was a dip in the quality of the food during COVID, but I'm happy to report that is behind us now. Over the past few days, I've had very good meals: carne de porco à alentejana and Portuguese haddock in a skillet. I recommend the Azorean on Washington Street in Gloucester! read more

Disappointing. Had been here several times in the past, and was stuffed to the gills. This time, food was not very tasty and left hungry. Mariscada had a few mussels, clams and scallops in a somewhat listless lobster broth. Two small crab claws were included, but came without any nutcracker and had little to no meat. My wife had haddock that was completely tasteless. Another in our party had a margherita pizza with raw vegetables on top that was inedible. Only good thing was rice pudding for dessert. Loved my first visit. Recently went there with my granddaughter for lunch and Patricia waited on us and was wonderful. We ordered the seafood platter. It came stacked high with calamari, haddock, scallops, shrimp. So GOOD. Went again a few days later with a friend and ordered the same dish and was totally disappointed. 3 shrimp, 3 scallop and very few calamari and small piece of haddock. When I complained the server told me the regular chef wasn't there! WHAT?? Went again today and again received the same very small plate. Guess I'll never get that first great experience. I must say, this is one of my favorite restaurants on the North Shore! From the service, food, and ambiance. It's impeccable. The spicy shrimp and calamari was fantastic. Could have been a little more spicy for me but it was really good. For the entree, I had the spicy beef tips with fresh cut fries. The beef tips were decent, once again could have been a bit more spicy - still tasty though. THE FRIES ARE AMAZING !! Very fresh and fried to perfection. Amazing wine list for the Wineo's. I had Dan as my waiter and he did a superb job. Continuously, checked up on me, engaged in conversation, and gave great tips on what foods are a must on the menu. It was a tiny tad spicy , I do not care for spicy food, is the only criticism I have. The waitress assured me that you can order it nob spicy if you want. The service was great, the waitress, Mary Jane, very friendly and helpful. The ambiance was great. There was soft background music by Roberto Carlos , the photos and decorations were from Portugal and the Azores. The wine was Portuguese. An entire meal for two, with three glasses of wine, was $63. I've been coming here several times since my last review four years ago and nothing has changed! This is my absolutely favorite Portugese restaurant in Massachusetts!! The atmosphere is 100% Portugese! The service is always friendly and prompt!! I ordered the grilled Octopus which I usually get and it was delicious as ever!! Previously, I'd give them 4 stars. Now they're gettng 1.5 stars. A group of us would go here occasionally and the food was predictably pretty good. The waitstaff was always friendly. Unfortunately, we asked for bread before the meal and our embarrassed waiter had to tell us they'd started charging $3.50 for it. We had our usual 2, so that was $7.00. That's just cheap. I can hope it's a temporary, but the food wasn't as good as usual either and it overall left us with a bad taste in our mouths. read more

Love this place. This is my third time here and if I lived any closer I would be a regular here, it's so delicious. We started with the calamari and shrimp it was so fresh and the pepper made it! Even the oil with the bread was good.I went to my favorite the azorean steak with Portuguese fries, and with the rice .... amazing! Can't wait to come back all dreaming of getting a bunch of different tapas!! My boyfriend got the surf and turf he's never had azorean food and he said this restaurant is going at the top of his list for restaurants. This is a perfect date night or even better for a big group, that way you can try different things! Also had 5$ house wine can't never go wrong with that. Had a fantastic experience again at the Azorean. He made a reservation a day in advance. Pretty busy for a Sunday night. The place nails every detail. Great fresh bread with olive oil and spices. We had the Garlic Shrimp and Fried Calamari for appetizers, yum I had the Mushroom Steak (12 oz tenderloin) And the roasted garlic sauce was awesome. We also ordered the Seafood Stew. While visiting the east coast, we stumbled upon the Azorean Restaurant and loved it. My husband and I have traveled the world extensively and love trying new things. We were not expecting an Azorean restaurant in this fishing village. Candidly, I wanted lobster and lots of them. But the clean look of the building and signage was compelling so we stopped in to 'check it out' and stayed. The food was delicious. We ate there three times, dinner, lunch, and a gratuitous meal just because we wanted more! The chef does a very nice job of conceiving the dishes, adding just the right amount of spice and implementing so it hits your table hot, and well prepared. The staff and hostess are professional yet real and kind. A chef friend of mine always says he visits the bathrooms before he eats anywhere. If they keep the bathrooms clean, the kitchen's clean too. If not, well, run fast. The Azorean bathrooms were clean and wheel chair accessible. We will certainly visit again. read more
