This restaurant is not only profoundly gracious, but incredibly yummy. I rolled my lovely 92-year-old mother in this afternoon in a wheelchair. We are limited to where we can go suddenly given her an ability to ambulate. Honestly, we came in only do to proximity. When we came in I asked if they might perhaps cook us a half portion of scallops + with potatoes and lieu of pasta. My mother is a petite little creature. Who happens to love scallops. Matteo, the wonderful waiter, very kindly went back and checked with the chef. Not only did the chef accommodate my request, but then came to our table to greet my mother. The food was "beyond" expectations. The scallops out of this world ---and oh so fresh. What's more is the chef then offered dessert on the house. And it was absolutely exquisite. As a foodie, and a bit of a food snob, and someone who goes out frequently, it is restaurants like this, that you come back to you. Interesting and tasty food and not too expensive. The Portuguese soup is one of the best soups I've ever had. Service was nice, and the design and decoration of the place contributes to the experience. Only warning is to have a sweater or jacket if you are eating there in the summer since the air conditioning is decidedly cool. We had a great family dinner. Authentic Portuguese (Azores) fare. Appetizers are good for sharing. Fava beans are a classic that are heartwarming during the winter. The Grilled Linguica (a typical Portuguese sausage) is perfectly grilled (Served in halves). We also ordered a Seafood Cataplana which is a type of Saffron Rice stew with rich flavors. With it, a good selection of wines (Open bottles can be taken home. The restaurant seals them to go). We opted for the Portuguese house wine. They also have American and Italian dishes as well. My family and I came here for my moms birthday. My mom wanted Azorean food. We drove all the way from Boston. It was 100% worth the drive. We had such a wonderful time. The food was absolutely wonderful.For mains we got the fish cataplana, octopus cataplana, grilled octopus, Azorean steak tips and the american steak tips. For appetizers we got Olives with bread and the calamari. For dessert we got the coconut pineapple tart. Everything was excellent and cooked perfectly. I was there with a large party tonight with everyone choosing something different. Everything was so delicious. I chose the paella and I have never had more tender calamari in my life. My husband snarfed the take home leftover container faster than I have ever seen in my life, it was so good. Everything was amazing. Came back again while visiting the North Shore. Was just as good as our visit a few months back. The atmosphere is relaxed and service is friendly. If you are looking for some good Portuguese food in the area check them out. We had: Azorean Salad. Was told that it was delicious and the person who ordered it gets it there quite often as shes a local. My bf and I both had the Azorean steak tips and potatoes. The marinade was delicious. They were cooked well and were very tender. The potatoes sliced thin and sauteed they were yummy. My cousin and her husband ordered the 6 for 36 It's a huge appetizer tier that they share for dinner. On it was some calamari, fish, scallops, buffalo chicken balls and one more item I forgot. It all looked good. I tried a piece of calamari and a chicken ball they were really good. Their house red was very good and just to be sure we had another bottle. Lol For dessert. Cappuccino with DiSaronno and two split desserts. Chocolate cake and coconut custard type pie. The food is amazing here. I think I've tried everything on the menu, that isn't shellfish due to an allergy, and it's been delicious. My husband has tried most of the seafood and he loves it as well. The service is amazing. Definitely worth a trip. read more

My superpower is finding excellent restaurants, with the help of Yelpers (thanks, all y'all - you make me look GOOD!). Here's one. My wife's seafood casserole was outstanding, particularly the sweet and excellently-cooked sea scallops. Get that. My marinated haddock with molho vilao was also excellent. I'd never heard of molho vilao before. Kind of a mildly spicy, colorful-tasting sauce; a bit like a salsa, but not. I dunno. Just yummy. Thinking I'll have to make some myself. Or go back to Portugal and have it every day. Mmm. And it played perfectly with the earthy yet slightly sweet haddock. Get that. Bread and oil was ... just bread and oil. For some reason, I ordered a Portuguese "vinho verde" - a green wine - which I already know I don't like much. Portugal makes excellent wines overall, and a lot of people like vinho verde, so don't let that scare you off. But I should have ordered something different. (Portuguese beers - meh.) Our server, Andrea B, was helpful, nice and fun. Very attractive store: clean and efficient. Kind of small, though, so make a reservation. Parking is odd and tight, so leave your 30-foot duallie at the house. Go there! read more

We've enjoyed The Azorean for years! Amazing Portuguese food served in a beautifully decorated, friendly atmosphere! The seafood is always so fresh and prepared on so many ways! But the pizza, salads and appetizers are all wonderful! We love that our children who are vegan and vegetarian can enjoy a number of great options, too! Last night we attended one of Chef Manny's wine dinners which are back on the schedule this winter! Our server Andrea was warm, knowledgeable and attentive! Our first course was a kale and potato soup with sausage, mild garlic flavor, velvety consistency with chunks of sausage. So perfect for the winter! This was served with the 2019 Auspicious Chardonnay. This Chardonnay is fruit forward and has a smooth body! The next course was salt cod served with potatoes and peppers. The meaty but light texture of the cod was a great match with the red blend, Berco do Infante which was light bodied and had lots of plum! The main entree was the Chateaubriand paired with a 2019 Auspicious Cabernet. The beef was so tender and the light gravy was a great compliment. The beef was served over grilled polenta cakes. I loved this dish!! Again so wintery, homey and not fussy! This wine wasn't my favorite, I found it a bit acidic and heavy, but it is always great to try something new! Finally for dessert an almond flan served with Beirao. Which is a traditional Portuguese liquor made from seeds and herbs. I tasted orange and a little nuttiness. The flan was creamy, rich and not too sweet! Manny is the perfect host! Educating us all on the wines and the dishes and insuring that everyone had a great time! Ate here with my wife for lunch yesterday. The ambiance was nice and the restaurant very nicely decorated and clean. The waitress was also very pleasant. I ordered the Azorean Linguine with clams, linguica, and tomatoes. My wife ordered the Linguica Bomb with mushrooms , peppers , and Saint Jorge cheese. Came with fries. The Azorean Linguine was plentyful and very tastey. The pasta tasted fresh. My wife loved her sandwich and said it was tastey. We were out and about in Gloucester and decided to grab a bite away from the center of town. Heard about Azorean from a friend and so we decided to try it for lunch. They have a parking lot and that was a plus so we didn't have to park on the street. We always get fried calamari and wondered what the "owner's mix" would taste like and so we ordered that as an appetizer. It came with roughly 8 25/30 size shrimp (extra large) on the outer rim of the plate. They were sautéed in an oil with a hint of.garlic. Not overpowering and.a nice change to your typical fried calamari appetizer. The breading on the calamari was a very simple no seasoning bread crumb. At first, I was underwhelmed. But then, I ate a small pepper and followed that with a calamari ring. Wow! It was amazing and I was blown away with how simple yet rich this turned out. They provided plenty of large pepper slices and thoroughly enjoyed this. We ordered the Azorean steak tips fir Junior. He loved the potato slices and ate some of the steak but I could tell he wasn't a fan. My wife and I tried it as well and agreed with my son. The star of the plate were the potatoes. I ordered the Mediterranean Salad and I thought the tomatoes, mint and red onions were especially bright and fresh. The feta cheese didn't stand out. Nonetheless, I really enjoyed the salad. My wife ordered the Seafood Cataplana. It came in a nice covered stainless steel pot. Earlier in the week we had gone to a Spanish tapas restaurant and we had a seafood paella where the broth was an outstanding 5 out of 5 and you could just taste the freshness. This broth by comparison didn't stand out and seemed muted. Maybe that is t fair but it is what it is. The seafood that was included was good but it is hard to get over that when it is in a broth. So as we sat there what came to my mind was Jimmy's In Arlington or the S&S restaurant in Cambridge. The ambiance was very comfortable and clean. The wait staff was knowledgeable and friendly. And so it occurred to me this is a "Cheers" type of restaurant for me. A place I would go to when I want something familiar and where I can just be me and not worry that I have to shift to fifth gear and be on my best manners and be dressed up. No one will look at you and wonder why you are hear. You come for the generous portions and to be left alone so you and your table can eat, feel satiated and then slip away with a friendly smile and wave from the wait staff. read more

The food was great! My husband and I loved everything we ordered. For appetizers we had the Owner's Mix. Had a good serving size and tasted great! Squid and shrimps were cooked just right. I had Azorean salad and my husband had seafood casserole. They all tasted delicious. Would have given 5 stars had the waitress given us the right order. My husband ordered the scallop casserole but got the seafood casserole. Despite the order mix up we enjoyed the food and service was great! Place had a lot of fascinating displays pleasant to the eyes. We will definitely come back next time we visit Gloucester. read more

After our last poor visit I wasn't sure if we would return, however, my mother wanted to celebrate her last radiation treatment and really wanted to go (which is funny as she had a poor experience last time) so we decided why not and I'm glad we went! First off, their Covid measures are fantastic. You can tell they really take masks, sanitizing and socially distancing tables seriously. I felt safe eating there and that makes a big difference. One change that I didn't love is now you have to order bread as an app that costs $3.50. We ordered it because my mother loves it but seems a strange change to make. They had a nice list of seasonal cocktails. I tried one that was creamy and pumpkin and packed a punch while my dining partner first had a beer then tried the pear cocktail (which also packed a punch!). We really enjoyed our drinks. They were nice and made my mother a Shirley Temple. For meals, I went with my favorite the cataplana and went with a seafood version. No complaints at all - love the broth and it's packed with seafood. Also, helped we ordered bread to dunk in the broth. My partner went with the Mozambique shrimp. It's so spicy! We've had it before and it's been spicy but not too bad. His eyes were watering so if you don't like super spicy that's probably not for you. My mother went with the chicken and butternut squash ravioli. She thought it was just okay but her taste is a bit off since the chemo and radiation. I had several of her raviolis and loved them. Food was uneven. We shared two appetizers: Azorean Littlenecks and codfish cakes. The clams came in a flavorful broth, but bread wasn't served with it, so we couldn't mop up all that deliciousness. The clams themselves were a bit overcooked and touch. The codfish cakes were small and sausage-shaped with a nicely browned exterior. However, it wasn't surrounding a tasty filling of potato & cod. The filling was somewhat mushy and there was a lot empty space between the exterior crumb coating and the filling. The dish tasted mostly of cooking oil. The La Portuguesa Pizza--a 12-inch pizza with homemade tomato sauce, ground chourico, peppers, onions and mozzarella--was first-rate. The toppings were spread equally across the top, and in just the right amounts. The chourico added a nice smokey flavor. The crust's exterior was crisp and nicely browned on the bottom, with just a bit of chew inside. My glass of house vino verde was a generous pour of a serviceable wine. I will start by saying that the reason this review is four stars instead of three is because of our waitress Cece. She made our experience quite enjoyable and we loved our interaction there, the food came out quickly and she was a delight. If I were rating this entirely on food, it would be approximately three. My partner enjoyed his meal however, I got the spicy lemon shrimp and there was no heat & barely any flavor at all. It was generally unappetizing. M In terms of Covid they did a decent job keeping us socially distance. I really enjoyed the outdoor section with the heat lamp in October. Has some of the best food in town (tied with Lobsta Land) with a specialization in Portuguese cuisine. There's a nice wine list and their house wines are very nice, especially at the price. The service is always friendly and it's never noisy even though it's one of the most consistently busy places in Gloucester. read more
