A friend suggested this place to meet for lunch. Scenic drive from Boston. They have off street parking and cozy booth seating. I ordered a glass of house Malbec and the Spanish paella. The wine was generously poured and the paella was a large portion served in a stainless steel dome. The rice didn't have that toasted texture but the broth and seafood were yummy! Since the restaurant wasn't busy for a week day, we sat for hours catching up without pressure from our server to move on. We even ended up sharing the chocolate mousse which was just the right amount of sweet bite to finish the meal. Would recommend this place! read more

My family has been going to the Azorean since it opened. Yesterday made a 6:00 reservation for three for a booth. When we got there, the hostess told us she made a mistake and our party was too small for a booth or a table for 4. Told us we could only have a high top or sit outside. This was with our 90 year old mother. She refused to accomodate us, saying she had to keep the booths and tables for larger parties, and if we didn't want the high top, we could leave. So we left. Thank goodness Gloucester is adding more quality restaurants who care about customers, and hopefully their loyalty. After almost two decades of loyalty, we won't be back. Very sad when a young lady gets to say "I took your reservation and I made a mistake and can no longer accomodate you". Bye. read more

This is a charming restaurant with very fair prices. We began with codfish cakes and a special of tripe with white beans. Both of these appetizers were excellent - the codfish cakes arrived hot and crisp, with a moderately spicy dipping sauce. The tripe was tender, and had the sort of deep flavor I associate with cassoulet, but was not as heavy and thus manageable in late July. For main courses, we both had the cataplana - La Portena going with the Seafood Cataplana, and I had the Spanish Cataplana (Paella). The former was typical, and probably the better choice. The "Paella" was more of a soupy stew, and the white meat chicken was not the best selection - the dish needed more seasoning, and moister bird to really sing. Food was great as always. Our waitress seemed bothered that we were there, didn't have knowledge of the menu. Questioned us when we asked for more bread, then never brought it. Probably because we only saw her twice. Never came to check how our food was and we constantly had to bother the hostess as she walked by. If this was my first time there I'd probably never go back. On July 6, 2024, our family held a Celebration of Life for my husband in Gloucester where he spent much of his life. He loved this restaurant and we would go for lunch or dinner every month or so. Our server that night was Susan and she was so kind and efficient and thoughtful. So we had the best of everything, great food, wonderful service. We have patronized this restaurant for years and realized we never expressed how enjoyable it is. There are two parking lots, which for Gloucester is important because parking can be tough, especially in Summer. The menu is very ample and though we usually choose fish, there is a varied selection for every taste and a child's menu as well. Drinks are well made and of course there are Portuguese wine offerings. Try the espresso martini or a seasonal cocktail. Always specials but we love the octopus here either cold or hot. Try a Cataplana or baked seafood casserole for the entree. They use New England and locally caught fish and shellfish. Their whole grilled fish dishes are always a treat. The portions are generous and can be shared. Staff are well trained and service is very fast, even for parties. Patio and bar dining but also quiet cozy booths for two. If you want a water view, it's not here, but enjoy the well made food then take a walk on the promenade moments away. Highly recommend. read more

I've been wanting to come to this restaurant for quite some time. We were in the area for a wedding and decided what better time to go than today. While waiting for others in our party to arrive, we ordered the codfish cakes for an appetizer. It was DELICIOUS. The others in our party ordered shrimp in garlic sauce upon arrival. They said it was amazing. Our table ordered the pork filets, braised beef, and sao Miguel style octopus. The octopus was hands down one of the best meals I've ever had. The octopus was cooked to perfection. Everyone at the table enjoyed their meals. We had flan, sweet rice, and the pineapple coconut tart for dessert. It was just an amazing experience all around. Hubby and I had a very nice lunch here. We like to eat healthy and appreciate fresh scratch cooking and Mediterranean flavors. The atmosphere here was quiet, clean, and pleasant with a Mediterranean vibe. We were seated promptly and our server was both friendly and efficient. We began our lunch with fresh bread and olive oil. We really liked the subtle, sweet seasonings in the oil. We shared our salad and fish entrees, which turned out to be perfect portions of both. The romaine in our salad was cut somewhat large for comfortable bites, but certainly not a real issue. The balsamic drizzle over the salad was sweet and tangy. The fish was perfectly cooked in its tomato pepper sauce. We liked the vegetables, but might have liked fewer potatoes and maybe more non/carb veggies. Again, not a real issue, just personal preference. I stopped to use the restroom and was impressed with how impeccably clean it was. I take that as a sign that they care about their customers and their business. Why not 5 stars? Well, while we really liked our lunch, we felt that is was not a "wow, how imaginative and over-the-top". It was, however, traditional fare done well. read more

I've been to this restaurant countless times and it's always consistent. This visit, an early Sunday evening we were a party of '4' . Entering the restaurant I noticed it seemed busier than usual and with lots of families with their small children. I'd made a reservation and our table was al set at the specified time. It was directly next to a large family with very loud, screaming crying kiddos. Not to be offensive to anyone, but my friends and self we have all had our children... we are grandparents and we really wanted to be in a quiet corner so we could relax and talk. So I asked to be moved to exactly that... the host found a better fit for us. It wasn't long before our server came to take our beverage order. I don't know how other diners feel, but I have never had a bad drink ( or wine) here. Whatever I've ordered has been made very well which was the case this visit. Our server brought our drinks in a timely manner and glasses of water which we had also asked for. She then took our food orders. I chose to order bread with oil and olives as an appetizer.. to share? For my meal the Azorean Salad without the sausage ( I am a vegetarian). All the others went with seafood dishes. Each meal arrived garnished to perfection. The salad I had ordered was something a bit different for me... actually a 1st. The salad had grilled slices of pineapple and a light pineapple dressing, Azorean grated cheese and other vegetables on greens and it was delicious! We ate our meals and chatted... and then it came time to make the BIG decision... should we? could we? order dessert??? There were 2 choices on the weekend list: Chocolate Lava Cake and Pineapple Upside Down Cake . Hands down we chose the Pineapple Upside Down Cake! There is a fairly medium/large-sized parking lot, and only a few spots were open, meaning the place was packed - a great sign of popularity. The restaurant appears to be super fancy from the outside, but is actually very casual on the inside. It is more like a bar with tables around it. We sat in a booth. The waiter was super friendly. We ordered caipirinhas and they were perfectly made (aka not watered down). I ordered the Seafood Casserole and the best part, honestly, was the cracker crumbs it was covered in... My friends and I stopped by here for lunch on our way to Rockport and got the 6-item tapas tower to share. The octopus salad was amazing--the octopus was so tender, and the veggies and chickpeas played perfect accompaniments! The fava beans were also very unique and delicious (perhaps a bit dry). The other dishes, however, left something to be desired. The braised beef was tender, but the flavors were muddled. The meatballs were lacking in flavor as well, and the sautéed mushrooms were.. well.. just sautéed mushrooms. Perhaps the most disappointing part of the tower though was the chips with hummus--I had expected homemade hummus from a restaurant like this, but it was pretty obvious that it was just out of a jar/tub. Overall, there were a couple nice items on the tapas menu here, but others were very simple and muddled, kind of like leftovers. The décor of the restaurant, however, is very pretty and has all sorts of interesting decorations; unfortunately, the corner we were seated at was very dark in comparison to the rest of the place. read more

I went on a Saturday night with my parents, sister, and husband. The food was so good and better than expected. We had the chefs appetizer of shrimp and calamari and it was delicious. I'm very picky about my calamari and usually don't like it breaded but this was amazing. My sister and I split a cheese pizza and my dad who doesn't like pizza had two slices and was happy! The restaurant is in a fairly new, well maintained building, where parking is tight but there's good on street parking. The inside is clean and well decorated. Super friendly waitstaff and everyone was really nice. It's just that the food was sorta bland (at least what we got). Prices were reasonable. It wasn't bad, just not great. OK. If there was a way to leave fewer than 1 stars, I'd still not be happy. This was a special occasion -- we had company, one of whom was from Portugal. Now, I know that no restaurant in effin Gloucester could compete with the real thing, but hey, I thought it would be nice to please our Portuguese guest. No, not possible. First, the service was INCREDIBLY slow. We had to wait for water for ~10 mins. Second, nobody spoke Portuguese. It's a pretense. Nobody knew much about the menu or the culture. Third, the food was at best, mediocre, and at worst, little semblance to anything remote Portuguese, let alone Azorean. Fourth, the waitress was RUDE, and particularly, to our Portuguese guest. Now, granted, there is a lot that's lost in translation as different cultures meet; but I would expect exactly at such interfaces that a person trained in being hospitable would be at their best in making everyone feel welcome and cared for. No such luck at this place, and definitely not from this young waitress. She was plain rude and wouldn't really offer to do much for us, from simple things like answering questions about the menu (she didn't know!) to even basics like turning on the fan over our table, or getting the next order of drinks! (It took her ~3 trips to get us 4 Rose's, each trip separated by 5-10 mins.) Overall, it's an understatement to say that we will NEVER be going back. They should change their name from anything remotely related to Portugal. Best call it something generic like "Food Place" to reflect their mediocrity. read more
