Horrendous experience on Cinco de Mayo take-out. Purposely called order in 2 hrs early & they only took first name with credit card info. On arrival, it looked like it was closed so after knocking at door, was ignored by ppl inside. Then observed line of ppl in backyard. Heard all complaints about ppl waiting 2 hrs, one had been back 2 times bc they lost her order 1st but it still wasnt ready. I asked 3 different ppl thru the window about order & they walked away to check & never returned. Finally asked a 4th person who said they didnt have our order. That someone else with same name had picked it up but contents werent same. When told what our order was, they found it & said 15 more minutes. Finally got it. Food was okay - burrito was dry like a wrap, no cheese on top. Chimichangas same way- very little chicken inside. Both were tasty but no sides with either of them- just tiny amt of sour cream. No salsa, no chips, no rice or beans. Chicken in Vera Cruz dish was dry. Very mediocre and pedestrian. Would never go back after such poor cust. Service. They should take lesson fm their Chester competitor. When I called there at 4:15, they said they werent taking any more orders. If the frying pan is too hot, get out of the fire!!!! read more

My friends and I came here after visiting Alstede Farms. We were pretty hungry and thirsty. Aztec Authentic Mexican Restaurant is a small place but looks very welcoming once inside. In the beginning, the staff was really attentive and then disappeared. I had wave at them a couple of times to get their attention - our table was missing utensils and the table napkin that every other table had. We ordered the large guacamole. It looked pretty small and was lacking taste (salt and lime). The burritos we ordered were pretty good. I ordered mine without cheese (I'm vegan)and I asked if it could be substituted with avocado or guacamole. The servers said no, I sort of understood because avocados can be pricy but still... I had to order a small guacamole which they charged me for. Also, I needed a refill of water but our server was way in the back being non attentive. I would not come back here. read more

Very good. Great service. Very impressed. Decoration was very cute. Bright colors and very welcoming. They have 2 tables for 2 outside too which is great! We had the small nachos - which were large! We added grilled chicken which was moist and not over grilled. They came out so pretty too with cream drizzled on top. For our meals we ordered chicken mole and rodeo burrito. Both were excellent. Very cute & quaint little restaurant. Feels like home when you walk in. The outside of the restaurant actually looks more like a home than a restaurant. I think the owner did a great job decorating the outside and the inside- it's very colorful and festive (just like how restaurants are decorated in Mexico). I was very pleased with the food here. The guac & the salsa is very delicious- simple flavors with only a few ingredients. I ordered the vegetarian burrito w/o the cheese- (they can make a lot of entrees vegan friendly for those of you who are vegan :)* ) The portion size was huge- enough for 2 people in my opinion. Their menu options are pretty extensive. They have so many different options and it was pretty hard deciding what I wanted to order here. Also, they have happy hour drinks AND it's byob! A solid four-star dinner. The best guacamole I've had in a long time - fresh and chunky! We also asked for some green salsa with our chips, which was tasty with just enough heat. Both the shrimp fajitas and the three amigos were good entrees. Service was not warm exactly, but capable and efficient, which was fine. Food was so bland. I rarely leave bad reviews, much less one star but this was some of the worst Mexican food I've ever tried to swallow. I ate the Three Amigos, which is basically all their different enchilada sauces. The chicken in the enchilada was so bland that I felt they must have forgotten ingredients. To top it all off, I was sick that entire night. If I'm going to get sick eating Mexican food, at least make it GOOD Mexican food. Finally, don't bother making reservations here. We showed up with the correct number of people and they seemed to think it acceptable for me to sit at the corner of the table after confirming they had room. After feasting on cider mill donuts (as an appetizer?) down the road at Hacklebarney State Park... we thought we'd stop in Chester for something small. We've walked the quaint streets of Chester before and had seen Aztec, but opted for a different cuisine. I'm glad we opted for Aztec Mexican even though I wasn't that hungry, which I realize is kind of an oxymoron. Small, maybe 10-12 tables, yet very clean and colorful. We sat and I opted for one of their specials... Pozole! I've never had it before, but oddly enough I remember a conversation between a few people on "Fear the Walking Dead" talking up this wonderful Mexican dish and how delicious it was. To me, it's kinda like Mexican chicken soup... no rice or noodles, but instead they use Hominy. Hominy is basically dried corn that has been soaked in a mineral lime bath. It swells to double/triple the size and takes on a "meatier" texture. Good... very good. My wife wasn't crazy about it, (it was "okay') but then... she didn't order it. It came with 3 tostadas/refried beans/lettuce, cheese/salsa. I look forward to trying the other Pozoles (Red Pozoles with pork) in my travels. They all look good! My wife had only some nachos with ground beef. Good... nothing special, but a nice size portion. Aztec is a BYOB... and they will make margaritas and other mixed drinks if you supply the booze. The service was a bit slow... although they are looking for kitchen help, so maybe that had something to do with it. read more

This is an authentic Mexican restaurant with excellent food and equally outstanding service. We were here on May 16, 2015 with my good friends with 2 people with celiac in the family. The owner has extensive knowledge of this allergy and indicated that the restaurant has dedicated fryer for gluten free dishes as well as gluten free preparation procedures to make any dish on the menu gluten free. We had our lunch and it was amazing. The food was fresh, tasty and all portions were very generous. You must ask for the spicy salsa, it was awesome. After our lunch, the owner came out to see what we thought of the food and what else he can get for us. I was excited to try another local Mexican food place. Read some of the reviews and the pictures looked nice so we decided to give it a try. Unfortunately, I was not impressed at all and here is why: 1- Chips and Salsa: chips were cold and tasted stale. Salsa had some good flavor though 2- wait staff kept sighing out loud whenever a call came in for take out order. Even my little guy noticed and said "they don't seem very happy about the phone calls" 3- Our waitress for some reason, had really hard time taking 1 of our simple orders: Bean and Cheese Burrito. After asking a couple of times about what is supposed to be in the burrito, we ended up getting Tacos!!!!!! NOPE, not what we ordered, so we had to wait while they prepared it. 4- Bean and Cheese burrito came with cheese in the burrito not melted at all!! 5- Also seemed to nickel and dime for everything: want extra salsa, that will be extra $, you got juice off kids menu (was like 4oz!!) but because no bean and cheese burrito on kids menu, then that burrito will be full price. Oh and the Juice will have to be paid for since it doesn't come with the regular burrito Needless to say, there won't be a 2nd visit to this place. Too bad :-( had a lot of potential. read more

Aztec Mexican is a welcome addition to the Chester restaurant scene. Nearly every dish we've had has been very good and their prices are favorable. Their steak tacos are the best in town. We went to Aztec because they claimed to have a great gluten free menu.. it was not. There were very limited items on the menu and the prices were way higher for GF food. They gave us chips and salsa when we sat down, but if we wanted GF chips, they were $6.99 for a small order. I got shrimp enchiladas which they charged me $20 for. On the regular menu they were $14.99. I don't even know if there was a difference between the two because they were both corn shells. I at least expected a decent amount of food for that price, and it was really just 3 small corn tortillas with a few small shrimp and a small bowl of rice and beans. I was very surprised and disappointed to read some of the earlier reviews on this restaurant. One reviewer commented on a margarita served without alcohol. Well, duh, the restaurant is BYOB, common in New Jersey, so bring your own tequila and pour it into the mix they supply. I have eaten at Aztec about four or five times and have never been disappointed. And my review includes comments made by my wife and our son and his wife, so each visit includes four dinners. Not once were any of us disappointed. The quality of the food and the freshness of the ingredients have always been first rate. In point of fact, we ate here just last night. This tiny hole-in-the-wall restaurant features warm colors on the walls and tables painted with charming tropical flora and fauna. The small staff is very accommodating. My experience has been that Mexican restaurants are very hit or miss, but Aztec is an ethnic dining hit. read more

A small, intimate place with a table on the porch. Had the Nacho Platter Supreme. Loaded with all kinds of flavors. The chips tasted homemade as did many of the ingredients. Not your typical out-of-the-can nachos. I missed being served chips and salsa, and a side of salsa would have made my nacho plate tastier. Soft drinks are $3.00 served in bottles with a glass of ice. BOYCOTT THIS HORRIFIC BUSINESS! The unhinged owner does not belong in Chester among so many delightful, dignified establishments. My poor mother made a reservation for 17 people weeks ago for a birthday / early mother's day dinner was forced to put down a deposit to hold the table. When family arrived (many traveled from out of town) there was only space for 13 or 14 at the table and they refused to let us use another table to sit comfortably - claiming they were fully booked with other reservations (lies, a few parties came in after us as walk-ins and the restaurant was not fully occupied the entire time we were there). We had people hanging off the corners of the table in extra chairs with no room to eat or drink. When we tried to seat 4 of us at a small two top nearby the owners (presumably miserable husband and wife) literally came out and shrieked at us like maniacs and threatened TO CALL THE POLICE! Never in my life have I been so mortified and disrespected as I was trying to enjoy a birthday celebration at Aztec. The way they treated my mother and guests was monstrous. The party we planned for weeks was ruined, with a damper put on the evening. If we didn't have so many people I would have happily walked out the door. Not to mention the food was bland and half of my family is sick after eating here. PLEASE DRIVE THIS DISGRACE OUT OF TOWN to make room for a deserving business. Spread the word. read more

Generous portions of bland food. Restaurant is situated in an internet dead spot but they refused to let a child's iPad on their wifi because "their credit card machine would be slow." This is a 7-table restaurant. A pigeon could've handled the amount of transactions they ran while we ate here. Fantastic tacos! I had the Mexican style pork tacos, came with the cilantro and onion on fresh corn tortilla. Best tacos I've had, taste just like the ones I had in Mexico, maybe better! Lots of different types of tacos and rest of menu looks great. Need to come back for dinner and it's BYOB - your alcohol can be added to their homemade margarita or sangria mix. Yum!! read more
