We went here for our monthly work lunch for my department. Our lunch is only an hour & a half - we were able to walk the few blocks to get there, sit down, order for 12 people, eat, leave and walk all the way back with plenty of time to spare. Ordered food to go online. Picked it up and got home and realized they didn't give us the chips and salsa we ordered. They put the burrito on top of the paper box my enchiladas were in so that box got crushed. I asked for green sauce on the enchiladas and got red. Food was underwhelming and not worth the price. I hate to give this place a bad review, as I've had wonderful times there going back to the mid 90s when I was in my 20s. But the new owners are running it into the ground. 2.5 hours after eating there, sick as a dog, vomiting. I did think when I was there - it looks dirty. I hope someone else buys it soon and brings it back. A place that, while it has had many owners ranging from middle eastern night club briefly to several good owners, deserves to be owned by someone who will run it properly. Its very near a portland landmark, patrons deserve better than wretching afterwards. We were with my husband colleagues, party of 10 on Monday around 4 PM in empty Aztec Taqueria. Service was more than bad. No forks no plates, had to ask for everything. We took so many items for sharing like tacos with meat and chicken quesadillas with chicken and beef, coconut shrimps. Portions were so small even in LA portions much bigger for same price. What a fun dancing place and bar to either hang and watch others enjoying themselves or get down on the floor and try to look sensual yourself. It has a great Latin vibe: beautiful women in high heels and adorable dresses with gorgeously gyrating hips, dancing with dark haired men in starched and ironed shirts and a nice pair of pants (hardly any blue jeans ;o) who were moving their partners with a grace and leading manner that I enjoyed watching and learning and dancing. All were incredibly fun! If you want to move, sweat, and dance all night, this should be your Saturday night go-to option. Even with my (beginner's) level of dancing, I was repeatedly asked to join someone on the (crowded) floor and shown in a caring and attentive way how to move with the music. Of course you have to like loud Latin music, but that isn't an issue with me: I love it. The fun way you can move without feeling out-of-place is a great experience, the dance steps are fairly simple and left me wanting more. So where are my girlfriends hanging out this Friday night??? Sorry but someone just needs to know this. We came in to have lunch & watch a soccer match today - we went to the bar & waited for the bartender as he was doing stocking. After about 5 minutes he was there & asked what he could get us. Before ordering we said we'd like to watch soccer since all the TVs were tuned to an NBA talk station. He said he could change the ones behind us - we asked if he could also change the TV over the bar and he said no. We asked why and he said that was the TV he watched. Their service person wouldn't change the TV channel for guests and apparently spends his time watching TV. I can't even believe that any service person would actually say that. Went here last night with a bridal outing of 30 females. Let me just say Aztec Willie's handled everything ON POINT!!! We were there for a few hrs and it was absolutely perfect! Girls came in, got beverage and then food, ate.. drank and ENJOYED!! Ps, Guava margarita is delicious! I stopped at this restaurant for their happy hour. I was visiting from Long Beach, California and thought I'd check out the drinks. Needless to say, the margaritas did not disappoint! The bartender from Florida (didn't get his name, unfortunately) was absolutely friendly. Made my drinks quickly and we shared a couple laughs. My wife and I visited yesterday afternoon at 3 pm and were very pleasantly surprised. We come from Southern California and have had our share of good Mexican food. We had the best ceviche we ever tasted . Chips were hot and fresh. We also had chile relleno which had the greatest sauce. On top of that they has Modelo Negro on tap. Unheard of. Look, I get it food cost are expensive. However, when I order nachos and they cost $20 , I expect them to be fantastic like the good old days. Because they used to be fantastic. I'm not really sure what the quality control is now and when I tried to call to express how disappointed I was that when I ordered my nachos, I had specific request and those did not get fulfilled. I recently ordered food from here, carne asada fries and carnitas. The carne asada fries literally had nothing on them besides cold cheese. No vegetables, nothing on the side, and don't even give you the options to add onions or anything. It was a rip off. And the carnitas looked like they were thrown together and tasted bland. I checked in on Yelp and the 'free taco' came up. I showed it to my waiter and he honored it right then and there! I mean, even before he took my drink order, he brought out the taco. That was actually awesome because it was freezing that night and it was such a warm, delicious carne asada taco in a home made corn tortilla. So yummy! Like a surprise appetizer. We ordered various beers and their complementary chips and salsa came out. I am a bit picky when it comes to salsa, and I know there are two campus of salsa lovers: chunky bits and blended well. I am a blended well kinda gal, and this salsa did not disappoint! It had a bit of kick to it and everyone at the table (even the guy who doesn't like cilantro) all said it was delicious. I could've drank a few cups of it, but I like to keep some mystery about me, so I dipped my chips like a normal human. My friend group ordered various dishes that had chicken and shrimp and rice and other sauces and things. I'll admit I was super chilly and wanted comfort food, so I got a 'boring' cheese and bean burrito. Mostly, I just wanted to wrap myself up in the burrito like a warm sleeping bag... There are some amazing Portland gems when it comes to restaurants. In fact, there are some of the best cuisine experiences in the NW here in Portland. Aztec Willie's unfortunately is not one of those. While, I am glad they are able to operate during the pandemic, I think AW's is really best to experience when their music/ dance floor/bar is going. After a day of exploring, Mexican food sounded good and I like supporting local businesses, especially now more than ever. AW's offers both inside and outside sitting. The restaurant had 2 outside tables and 3 inside seated tables when we arrived. One table immediately left as we were walking in. While there were staff working, it seemed the bartender was responsible for all the customer needs. He was super friendly and apologized multiple times. We decided to stay versus getting our order to go. Another inside table left within minutes of us sitting down, so the inside was really empty. I completely understand the wait to order, get our table cleaned (all the tables that had chairs in the bar area still had dirty plates on them), and getting our margaritas because the poor bartender was a one person show. The food though...the chips were stale, the rice and beans ice cold and the guacamole needed seasoning desperately. The cheese enchiladas were piping hot and very good, however. The bartender originally steered us to the margarita special, a watermelon mint, but then came back and said there was no mix left. I opted for a peach margarita, which was the worse margarita I've had to date. Actually, that's not accurate. It wasn't worse than the margarita I attempted to make at home several years ago. ‍ Overall, not a great experience. I would give them another try once their music and dance floor opens back up. Aztec Willie's food is excellent and has been consistently so for decades. Up until a few years ago, we ate there at least once a week, sometimes more. We even had several birthday celebrations there. For some reason, they decided to switch from cafeteria-style to table service. This wouldn't have been a bad change, except for two things: 1. It's really slow. We've gone at least a dozen times since the change, on various days, and at different times, and every time the same thing: it takes forever to get your menu, then an eternity to place your order, then too long to get your food. It wouldn't be terrible if they at least tried to keep your drink from getting empty, but most of the time you just want to leave by the time they get around to asking if you'd like a second one. From what I can tell, the slowness is entirely because they shifted their food prep people to table service, instead of adding staff. 2. They dramatically increased their prices. If the price increases had been accompanied by some - perhaps any - kind of improvement, it would have been warranted. But, because of #1, it feels more like an insult than anything else. At one point, there was a screed from the owner in the menu explaining that the price increases were because he was being forced to pay his employees more because of the min. wage increases. That didn't help - it made me, and perhaps others, feel like he was a bit of a jerk - and it was removed after a short time. That might have been the only good decision that's been made recently. Over the years, I have personally recommended Aztec Willie's to scores of people, and I should have left them a five star review here on Yelp. However, because of the above, I now either don't recommend them, or recommend to avoid them. If you want to know what the place used to be like, I recommend that you instead go downtown to Maya's Taqueria. They have the same great food, excellent staff, and are a great value for your $. read more

I literally was excited to order a late night meal from Aztec Willies Taqueria because it seemed like closest thing to authentic Mexican food around where I am staying in town. I ordered bean and cheese dip and a bag of chips with salsa and guacamole. What I received in the damn bag was a bean and cheese burrito the size of my pinky, the chips had no flavor (no salt) and super thin, the salsa and guacamole were extremely gringo. This is the most disgusting food!!! Super Caucasian, super gross, I totally wasted my money and got the wrong order at that. Smh read more

If Taco Bell and Applebee's had a sleazy affair that resulted in a love child, it would be this place. The food is fast-food Mexican, and not really in a good way. The meats are not much better than a place like Taco Bell, the prices are slightly higher. While I wouldn't call the food offensive, it's definitely not "good". I got Fajitas, which made me long for a Chipotle burrito. The atmosphere is similar to a "Club Applebee's" (for those of you that don't know...in many 'burbs across America, Applebee's turns into a trashy party-bar after 10pm). I LOVE this restaurants happy hour! Not only is the food delicious, there are a ton of options! They also serve the best margarita in town. Just ask me and my friends! ha ha That isn't to say that the rest of their happy hour drinks aren't great. The restaurant is really rather modern, for a Mexican restaurant. It also - fortunately - lacks the tacky neon red, yellow and green painted walls so many Americanized Mexican restaurants resort to. No frills is a good thing as far as I'm concerned. I'm told they also have tango/salsa dancing on weekend nights. I have 2 left feet, so I haven't tried it out, but I'm sure it's a great time. The only downside would be parking. UPDATE::: Came here the other night it was awful. The service was okay but the food was NASTY! Very disappointed considering my last experiences that were delivered to me. The drinks were gross, the food was FILLED WITH FAT CHUNKS... I couldn't eat half the meat on my plate. It was just hard fat chunks. My first bite to the very end. I ended up ordering a quesadilla and not eating my food because it was horrific. I won't be back ever again. The parking here is AWFUL! So if you're driving don't bother just uber in. This place is delicious It's the only place in town we have tried where the salsa ( habanero sauce ) is actually really good and spicy. I am from so cal and we live for spicy food.
