I was at the bar just for a quick meal and I was listening to a voice message. Phone was to my phone because there were people talking and people setting up the instruments. She comes up to me (from the far left booth 20 feet away) to tell me we don't allow that. Cool i foolishly listened then kept listening to my Vm cause there's no way you can hear that and I also just thought this was a random customer. I finished my VM and she came to me again after (I guess her break was over) to repeat that and not with a cool attitude either time mind you, but like there's no wayyyyy you can hear that, the place was loud enough for me to comfortably listen to my message without anyone hearing it. So I ask her to tell me what she heard if she can listen to it but she couldn't hear it she says she hears screeching nails on a board. She said she's curated a vibe and experience? A really interesting vibe in an Industrial neighborhood. I'm surprised they close so early, but have enjoyed several afternoons relaxing in the booths with friends. I haven't eaten more than a few bites, but what I have tried was good. One of the bartenders arranged for my friend to pay for my drinks. Food was fine, service was bad. I was on a call, with earbuds, and the bartender told me to not have calls on speaker because it disturbs regulars. I inform her that my call was not on speaker and spoke more quietly. She drops off my food and lectures me about not having calls on speaker and "knowing that I was doing something wrong." It's been a while since I visited Bunk's. I like that this location has a spacious interior and is counter service. We ordered their special sandwich for the week along with some Pickles and loaded fries. The sandwich was flavorful and tasty. The loaded fries could've been a bit better if they melted the cheese (in my opinion). The pickles were a solid add as it helped cleanse the pallet from the savory items. read more

I work in an office space across the street, and have frequented Bunk Bar many a times by myself and with coworkers. I would not recommend Bunk Bar myself. They are a hit 40% or miss 60% of the time not even 50/50. I went in today for the attached order and waited 35 mins. Initially, I ordered a togo small Greek salad with grilled chicken. Came out in less than 20, but was not in a to go container. Waiter takes it back to box, waited another 10 mins. I walk back to my office to then see the order is not correct. I received fried chicken instead of grilled chicken. But whatever, I was going to eat it anyways. What really empowered me to write this, is the quality of the fried chicken itself. This is burnt, and hard to even eat. Just looks oily and old. The above is small but overall the entirety of my experience with Bunk Bar has largely been inconvenient and frustrating, because it seems every time I come here theres an issue with my order. For example the last time I came here I ordered a sandwich and requested a topping to be taken off, which was never taken off. $6 for a small Greek salad, and $4 extra for the disappointing chicken. read more

It was moist and crispy and really messy. A 4 napkin treat!!! Fluffy brioche bun tangy sauce and dripping with pickles and coleslaw goodness. HOMERUN!! I was sad to see that a few of the other Bunk locations had closed, but Bunk Sandwiches is one the first spots I head to when I'm in PDX. I typically order two sandwiches (the Pork Belly Cubano and Italian Cured Meats). Not going to lie... I dream about those sandwiches and have tried making my own Italian at home. The Italian Cured Meats is one of my favorite sandwiches in the country and has great texture with all the toppings. The location is perfect because it's right next to my favorite coffee shop (Water Avenue Coffee). Being able to go to both of these right when my plane lands are my perfect scenario. It's street parking, and you may need to do a couple of laps around the block to find a spot, but it's worth it. Inside, it's got a bar vibe (cause it is). I have been there before when they weren't allowing underage patrons because they were about to have a band play. There are booths on one side and tables in another corner. I haven't been there when it is hard to get seating, but I could see that during a lunch rush. It's usually quick service after you order. You order at the bar and then grab your seating. It's self-clean up, too, and all pretty self-explanatory. read more

One of the first questions I ever asked (to no one in particular) at the bar here after eating my first bite of an Italian Cured Meats sandwich: "Why? Why is this so hard?" The bartender's response: "You have no idea how often people come in here complaining about other sandwiches." That was about eight years ago, and I've struggled to find even a handful of other options that come close to Bunk's Italian Cured Meats for an Italian sandwich in Portland. This entire metro area is a godless place that sees fat, spice, seasoning or slightly crusty bread and immediately feels the need to drown it in cream sauce. That there's active debate over whether Oregon's regional dish is biscuits and gravy (it isn't) or jo Jos with fry sauce (and there are places--like JoJo's--working hard to elevate this form) tells you just how muted the menu can get here. If you order an Italian sandwich here, most places will serve it either on a spongy roll akin to a dinner roll or on an artisanal loaf designed by the dental industry to yank loose teeth. The happy medium found elsewhere in the country is rare, but that's not the delis' fault. However, the far more egregious treatments involve laissez faire tearing of random lettuce instead of shredding iceberg in the slicer and adding mayonnaise, mustard or both as default condiments, sometimes proudly declaring "NO SUBSTITUTIONS." Bunk founder Tommy Habetz didn't take this approach with Bunk's Italian Cured Meats, because he isn't a philistine. He understands that cured meats contain enough salt and fat content of their own to alleviate any need for mustard or mayonnaise--let alone mandate them--and that the oil, vinegar and oregano added to the sandwich provides more than adequate moisture to counter the chewy exterior, but soft interior of his Fleur du Lis rolls. Bunk doesn't fly a tricolore outside its shop or list the family bonafides from their 20th Century voyage her from points east. It just makes a sandwich the way that countless shops and delis have before: Recognizing that the right mix of quality ingredients matters more than their local context. For this, I am in their debt that I can only repay one sandwich at a time. read more

I love coming here with the boys, especially on a weekend in the early evening. They have something delicious for everyone, and then Shirley temples for the kids and a wide selection of delicious beers and cocktails for me. The space is large enough that you don't have to worry if the kids are being loud (the first photos I can find are from 2012, when my (now very laid back teen was just two and my very mellow tween was just a glimmer in his mother's eye), the era when my children would run the ramp and bat at the pinball slippers with zero accuracy. Everyone at BB has been really nice to each and every one of us. Last visit I saw a customer who was outraged that her bill was so high (it was still shockingly cheap), and the bartenders gently, and patiently explain, over and over and over again that it was her brother who had put all his drinks for himself and his friends on her tab. She did not get it and really wanted to battle about it, but they never reacted. I was super impressed - I was ready to grab her and push her out the door!! I haven't even mentioned the food!! Everything is soooo good. One son always gets the grilled cheese and tomato soup, so thick and comforting I always have to steal a few bites. The other the juicy and perfectly cooked burger. I always change my order. Their Italian grinder brings me back to Molinari's, their Ruben? Oh god, is it good! read more

Seems there are multiple ways to order but via Doordash took between 35-40 mins from ordering to the meal making it to our door. Prior to writing this review I didn't realize that Bunk was on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. Looking it up the first visit was a missed opportunity to try their cubano but now I know what option to get my next visit. | WHAT WE GOT | + Italian Cured Meats + Meatball Parmesano Hero + Side of tater tots Both items were nicely portioned and you can easily eat half if you're pairing your sandwich with a side. Italian Cured Meats (got it toasted) was topped with plenty of peppers (depending on the heat you decide). The meatball hero had 4 nicely sized meatballs with melted cheese on top. The bread on both sandwiches held up well with all the fillings/toppings as well. If you're not craving your standard potato chips the tater tots are a nice option (may opt to put it in the oven when it's delivered) and pair it with both their bunk sauce (similar to thousand island) and ranch on the side. read more

Decided to give another Portland sandwich shop that's been featured on Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives, a try for lunch. Called ahead and placed an order for takeout. This is the only location that is open right now and the menu is more limited at this location. Upon arrival, was able to grab a spot on the street and my order was all wrapped up on a table just inside the door. So very smooth pick-up. Decided to try their Italian Cured Meats sandwich, given all the rave reviews. Sandwich is made of ham, salami, capicola, shredded iceberg, red onion, along with their marinated peppers and provolone piccante. They gave me the option of spicy or regular, and I ordered a regular, but found it still had a kick due to oil/vinegar provided. Bread was fresh and crunchy. A very good sandwich. We had the impossible burger sandwich and this is just a perfect burger with lots of salat and a delicious crispy grilled patty with all the fixings. In addition I'll had their take on a Columbian and I liked it. Especially since it wasn't overloaded with meat like American normally do :). Tasty and crispy. Bloody Mary: WOO doggies! Spicy kick but GOOD! Tots: wow!! So tasty. OMG these rival McMenamins. Ordered various mustards for dipping which added a wonderful dimension to the experience. Fresh, light, crispy, with a perfect hint of salt. Grilled cheese: Yes! Great flavor. Can't go wrong with Tillamook cheese. Roasted chicken salad sandwich: Darn! Sadly I was disappointed with this, especially since everything else was so tasty. It wasn't bad but just had very minimal flavor. All it needs would even be a light dusting of some spices to really improve the flavor. :( and the bacon was somewhat fatty. Creamy tomato basil soup: Yes yes yes! Rich, a little kick, and just, well, DELICIOUS! Again, this is what tomato basil should taste like. Turkey club: VERY good! Fresh and delicious. Just like it should be. Chocolate chip cookie: Meh. Decent but nothing special. Overall I was extremely surprised and IMPRESSED by this place. Love the Cuban music and atmosphere in here. They're just missing ceiling fans for ambiance. 4 stars plus! This has been on my list forever, so was excited to make this the second stop of our Nacho Crawl. I think I had a sandwich from here forever ago, and have been trying to come back since. We came in around 2pm on a Friday, and there was no wait, and a decent amount of people in. It looked like there were plenty of tables and space for the future, which is nice. The server was friendly, and our food came out relatively fast. I can only review what I had, which was the nachos. Unfortunately, it's the reason for the 3 stars, and maybe even two. When we walked in, we noticed a few nacho containers on empty tables with chips and some toppings in them, and thought, wow, that must mean these portion sizes are huge, and people couldn't finish! Wah wah wah. We got the Nachos, and there was a good portion size of chips. Problem was, there was a minuscule amount of Kalua Pork, and the standard grocery store tortilla chip. A perk was the cheese was a swiss? cheese, and not the standard ballpark nacho cheese drip. Sadly, the swiss didn't have a lot of flavor, and felt like maybe the it had melted a few minutes earlier and was already hardened. Sadly, the best part of the nachos were the pineapples. After eating the chips with the Pork, there were still a lot of chips left. We ate a few of the chips with cheese, but that grew old fast. At that point, the most flavorful thing on the plate was the pineapple, so we finished the pineapple, and like others, left about half the plate of chips and cheese. It was the most uninspiring place I went all week, and I'm hesitant to go back tbh. I appreciate that businesses participate in Nacho Week, but in this instance, I think it would have been better to just skip the week if you can't do it well, and coming off of eating the Kalua Pork nachos at Grind Wit Tryz, it was a stark contrast. read more

Slowly eating my way through Portland's most hyped up lunch spots. Bunk's Pork Belly Cubano had been referred to as one of the "12 Wonders of Portland Food"; been featured on popular food shows such as Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives and The Best Thing I Ever Ate, and I can kind of see why. Despite its "exotic" origins, the Cubano has become ubiquitous ever since the American culinary industry discovered the cost-efficient and easy-to-wonder culinary wonder that is the panini press. The panini press essentially transformed what would otherwise just be a vanilla run-of-the-mill sandwich that any Joe Schmo can whip up out of the leftovers in his fridge; without the added ingredient of the grill, the Cubano is in essence, a slightly more costly PB&J of the cheese and ham sandwich genre. But alas, slap a fancy name and an innovative cooking technique to anything and it becomes instant gourmet. Despite my sarcastic leanings regarding the Cubano sandwich, I really did enjoy Bunk's rendition of the Floridan favorite: the bread is crunchy, not just from being toasted but as part of its original texture; no complaints with the Swiss cheese, but the mayonnaise does add a nice dimension of rich and creaminess to the already savory molten cheese; I honestly thought pork belly would come out too greasy and fatty, but it complemented the ham/shoulder roast perfectly. This is a solid place to eat and they use good quality meats and so on. I want to say that I think they serve great sandwiches here and at one time they were at the top of the list but Portland being "food city" there are now other places that I think make better sandwiches. There's a lot of competition out there! On this visit, I ordered up the Roast Beef sandwich with caramelized onion, cheddar, dijon. I also ordered tater tot's... Who doesn't love tots! :-) First off, the sandwich was served cold on a poppyseed kaiser bun which I found extremely odd because the meat was cold and the cheese wasn't melted. The bun was cold and the bottom bun was a bit hard as if it wasn't fresh or had been exposed to air for some time. On the other hand... The tater tots were served warm and tasty. Service was nothing impressive. This place is going to get business no matter what due to the location and the music venue but I hope they pay a little more attention to quality before they lose customers. read more

The order was through DOORDASH. The tots were so heavily salted they were inedible. Every item was heavily salted.....even the Ranch salad. Well, you can't ruin an Impossible burger right? Wrong, you can and they did. Seemed very small, as if the burger had been sliced in half horizontally. And again so much salt on it. Chicken salad sandwich was horrible tasting inside a stale bun.
