Apparently Azteca de Oro has undergone a dramatic change for the better (and more expensive). We returned to the same location on University Boulevard where, just a couple of years ago, we were served microwaved chicken and canned guacamole in a humble vinyl booth, and found both the interior and the food completely changed. Gone is the Denny's-level decor, replaced by an ambitious interior full of illuminated, tree-like sculptures and a fancy bar. Gone too is the cheap, poorly prepared, sawdust-flavored food, which now starts at $20-25 dollars for an entrée, but is wildly improved. I had the carnitas tacos on the server's Michelle's recommendation, and she steered me right. Freshly prepared, with crisp flour tortillas, crispy pork and diced raw onions and cilantro, they were the real deal, savory and delicious. The Mexican rice and refried beans were both solid as well. Another in our party ordered fajitas, which came in a huge serving, and another had the build-it-yourself two-item combo with a tostada and a chimichanga, which she enjoyed. Those dishes were both very generous and they ended up with lunch-sized leftovers. I managed to polish off the lovely carnitas at the table. Everything seemed fresh, nicely seasoned, and made with care. Drinks are a big focus at Azetca de Oro now too, and one of our party enjoyed a $16 (!) cocktail that came in a birdbath-sized glass with a flower blossom. My Dos Equis amber draft came as cold as I could have asked. This is a completely new restaurant, obviously re-envisioned as a polished, mid-scale eatery vs. the low-end fast food style when the place was floundering a few years back. Whether this was the way to go for a restaurant positioned to draw hungry, cash-strapped college students remains to be seen, but the place looked busy, and the younger people I saw were dressed up for a night out. Not everything different is better of course. Without the pedestrian aisles of matching booths, the large open space was LOUD on a Thursday night. The subdued lighting doesn't make it easy for mature eyes to read the fine script on the detailed menus. And it's quite expensive, even for the much higher quality food. $16 for a cocktail on University is a bit absurd in my opinion. Nevertheless, Azeteca de Oro is a real restaurant now, and one worth your time if you're looking for fancy-feeling Mexi-esque dining with well-made food and pricey, exotic drinks. They recently renovated and it is SO cute inside! It looks very authentic and even have a mariachi band on the weekends! Our server was so sweet and gave us a tip to save some money on our drinks. For happy hour they have BOGO drinks and they're so yummy and strong. The queso was the best I've ever had and the fajitas were really good but I wish it was more like fajita chicken not just cut up, but really good flavor!! read more

I wanted SO badly for this to be 5 stars, but the reality is that it was a heavy 3.5. (So I went with 4. ) They got me right in, and it was pretty prompt service. As has been thang this trip, I asked them to have the bartender to be creative and make me a non-alcoholic drink of his choice. I got back something pink, fruity and tasty. The salsa that came with the chips was fresh and worth the trip... Two bowls later, I didn't have room for my queso. (but I had some anyhow .) The queso was smooth, not grainy and I regretted not getting it with chorizo mixed in... But not a lot. It was still awesome. When my main course came out, I was stoked! It looked awesome. The first few bites were promising... But then it didn't go so well. The bacon wrapped shrimp were pretty good, but the chicken was a little dry for my taste and the steak was WAY over-salted. I skipped the rice and substituted plantains... Epic, and totally worth the change. All in all, the meat situation wouldn't stop me from coming back. There's plenty of other items to get. Wonderful, wonderful, WONDERFUL! Just yesterday, on 5/22, I hosted a party of 37 people for my husband's 40th birthday here. The entire process from the time I made the reservation until the conclusion of the party was absolutely seamless. The staff & the managers were friendly, polite, and oh so accommodating. Saul, the manager I had the pleasure of dealing with, made the experience especially pleasant, taking every call from me leading up to the date of our function, and meeting every last one of my many special requests, all with a smile, right up until the very end. The food was FANTASTIC. Still today, my guests are ranting and raving about how wonderful their meals were. The chicken taquitos appetizers were incredible, and the tableside guacamole was awesome - my guests especially liked that they could customize the tableside guacamole to their liking, choosing their own topping from the tableside pushcart. I have not heard a bad thing about any of the entrees that were ordered, but my husband and I shared the tacos de birria and the steak fajita quesadilla and both were out of this world. My husband said the birria tacos were the best he has ever had, specifically noting the exceptional flavor of the stew meat. I especially enjoyed the steak fajitas, which were flavorful and filling! The steak was tender and delicious. While I have no experience working in a kitchen, I imagine getting 37 meals out at once, all hot and fresh, is not the easiest task; but Azteca did a very well job of making it look easy. The kids meals came out first, and the adult entrees immediately followed. There was not a single mistake made with our orders. The staff and the kitchen executed this perfectly & I could not have been more impressed. As for the service, every employee we encountered was incredibly friendly. Heidi, our server, however, made our experience exceptionally memorable. She was so friendly, so polite and her service was exceptional. We never had to look for her. Our drinks never ran empty, and she was there to empty plates as they emptied. Her communication with me was superb throughout the evening; she looked for me at multiple points throughout the evening, asking if I wanted her to begin taking entree orders; and again later, to ask if we were ready for cake - gestures my planning heart really appreciated. Hats off to her for wonderful, wonderful service. What a gem. Needless to say, we had a superb experience at Azteca. This located is OPEN. Open & thriving. My family is in town from New York and we are staying in the Residence Inn hotel behind this restaurant. We decided to give the restaurant a try so we walked over and to our surprise this place is nothing less than amazing! The ambiance and decoration is superior. 10 for 10 service, our server was very attentive. The food, which is obviously the best part, came out very fast and was delicious. Speaking of food, let's talk about it: They of course start you out with salsa and chips which were delicious. You can tell the salsa is authentic and homemade. My best friend and I both got the birria tacos, the consumé was out of this world! So full of flavor. I enjoyed that the meat on the tacos wasn't the regular beef that is usually what birria tacos come with. It was a blend of beef, pork & lamb. The dish comes with rice and refried beans. Delicious. My aunt got spinach enchiladas with white rice and black beans (vegetarian) which she said was delicious and my brother in law got a whole fish that was served with salad, rice and beans. He was raving about it all night! We went on a Friday night, so they had a mariachi band playing. It makes for a super loud restaurant but it's a great time. The bar was popping, drinks were flowing. My first time to Azteca de Oro was for a business dinner. I am newer to the team, but when we sat down our waiter knew the favorite drinks of a few of the seasoned members: from sparkling water, to diet soda to negra modelo to margarita, which I had... it was really good! The menu is ample and there are tons of choices. A couple of my coworkers order a dish that to me is a sign of a real mexican place that is worth its salt: Molcajete! This dish is usually only offered when the chef is confident on his Mexican abilities... as opposed to tex-mex :$. Anyway, if you come to Azteca... order it (you can thank me later!) but make sure you save your appetite for it, because it is a BIG portion. I heard about this restaurant from a friend who used to visit regularly when her son attended UCF. Ever since she found out my daughter is attending UCF she has been asking me on a regular basis if I had tried it yet. I finally got the chance on a rainy Sunday night. Located 2 minutes from campus I had passed it many times while scouting out the area. As soon as I walked in I loved it. The decor is so cute. It looks like something you would find in the Mexico plaza of Epcot. Huge pictures hang on the wall and the booths are cozy and brightly painted. Over the bar there is a huge chandelier made out of Corona bottles. The menu is extensive. There were so many pages it was hard to focus. My daughter finally settled on the fajita chicken quesadillas and I had the chicken taquitos. We are gringos so we stick with the basics. If you are into more traditional Mexican dishes you can certainly find them here. Before our meal we feasted on the warm tortilla chips and delicious salsa. The fact that they serve the chips warm shows how much care they take in everything they do. While we enjoyed our chips we were serenaded by the Mariachi band. They were really good! It was like having dinner and a show. The dinner we ordered was delicious. The servings were so huge we could only eat about half of it. I requested no refried beans and without my asking they not only left them off but replaced them with more rice. My daughter had a ton of leftovers to take back with her to the dorm. When I asked them if she could take the tortilla chips too they brought her a fresh bag with the salsa in a to go cup. The combination of some of the best Mexican food I have ever eaten and attentive service make this place 5 stars. Went here with my fiancé last Friday. Had not been here since they did the remodel. It looks beautiful, we sat at the bar, the bar chairs are really comfortable. The food was delicious and large portions. I had flautas and my fiancé had a cream cheese burrito that he said was amazing! My one complaint is the bartenders need work on their social interaction. Extremely unfriendly, no greeting or welcoming us in, very transactional. I do not even know the names of our bartenders because they never introduced themselves but it was a gentleman with a mustache and a young woman. The food is delicious, the portions are large, the drinks are delicious and strong. I usually order takeout. The times I've sat down is at the bar or for someone's birthday party. I personally don't like to go with parties larger than 4. Last time I went, there were numerous mistakes with the orders. While everything was delicious, it was annoying to get as many mistakes that happened. (Made my drink wrong, dropped some meat while putting the plate down and trying not to replace it... Not a bad spot but I feel a little higher priced than most Mexican restaurants similar. Maybe because of the location near UCF they are along University which is a main artery into the campus? We came at an off-peak time so it was relatively empty - too late for lunch and too early for dinner so maybe 20% full. The restaurant is fairly large and has decor you would expect with the colorful reds and greens. After narrowing down my meal selection to a couple of items, the table next to me received their food. As one of my choices was actually a burger and I saw one being delivered, so I asked the waitress and she said they had really good burgers. My Mexi burger was a 1/2 lb double patty with bacon, jalapeno cream cheese, poblano chile, lettuce, tomato, pepperjack cheese, AND grilled onions and green peppers. Served with seasoned fries this was a monster burger for $12. I did not finish it but I would not hesitate to order again. Decided to try Azteca D'Oro after reading many reviews. I was a bit suspicious because this location is just blocks from the massive UCF campus. I expected hundreds of college age kids drinking heavily and being loud. Thankfully my fears were dashed once inside the restaurant. Right off the bat, the décor is quite nice and inviting. The speed at which you are greeted at the door and chips / salsa placed on the table were only the beginning of their 5 star service. The waitress was very nice and extremely attentive. We wanted for nothing the entire time we were there. I thought to myself, how kind the wait staff is considering that they, most assuredly, have to endure hours of abuse from drunk college kids. For this location, I think the key is to go for lunch and avoid anything after say 7pm. Although I must say that I don't know for sure, however, other experiences in this area prove to be the case. Now for the food. Flavor is the goal they are trying to achieve here and they did not disappoint. Our waitress brought our Rita's and water with astonishing speed. I was honestly taken back with how efficient and speedy the staff attended to all the patrons. In this regard, these people get it. The salsa has a very unique flavor and very yummy. The chips are a bit thicker than what you would expect from a Habeneros for example. The result is that the chip doesn't break in half when trying to scoop up some salsa. Another nice touch was separate salsa cups for my wife and I. Makes for a more pleasant start when your not fighting for a shot at the salsa. We started off with an appetizer of queso and chorizo as we get this almost everywhere when eating Mexican. I thought it would be a good compare with other restaurants. I immediately notice that the cheese sauce is not dripping in grease from the chorizo. A complaint that I have with Garibaldi, for example. We also asked for warm tortillas as another way to dip the cheese sauce and glad we did. The flavor of the chorizo was authentic and the cheese sauce remained loose the entire time while eating. I am often put off when cheese sauce hardens as it cools and makes it difficult to get a small amount onto a tortilla chip. This marked the start to a wonderful lunch. I am fairly partial to burritos, therefore i was compelled to order the Macho Burrito. Reviews are great and it seems to be a very popular dish. The size was not quite as big as all the other reviews mentioned, but was a good size for sure. Right away, it is clear that the line cooks take great care in presentation. It was quite possibly the most yummy looking burrito I have been served. My only issue was with the seasoning on the ground beef. Which didn't really come through. I think next time I will ask for steak or chicken to see if that has a nicer flavor profile. I was able to eat just about all of the burrito, I was quite hungry. It doesn't come with beans and rice and I didn't expect nor want. Rice is included on the inside which I love. My wife had the Pollo Fundido. I was immediately taken back by the cheese topping on each of the medallions that were plated. Is that American process cheese slices? Wha? Did they run out of queso blanco? I checked the menu and it's for real. A slice of American cheese is the intention. Not only does it look weird, the flavor profile doesn't fit. The presentation is also an odd comparison with my Macho Burrito, for example. Queso blanco topped with a light sprinkle of cilantro would make for a much better plate or possibly a slice or two of jalapeno. It's such an odd choice that you have to ask, who's idea was this? Is it the influence of the college age diners. That said, my wife said the filling was very creamy and tasty. I thought the way the sides were plated were an excellent idea. The fry up corn tortillas into little bowls and serve the rice and beans separate. Something I thought was a clever idea considering I dislike a plate where the beans are so loose they run all over everything. This experience has propelled our new favorite Mexican destination to Azteca D'Oro. The speed of service was matched by none. Seriously, you have to experience service like this to truly understand what good team member selection can produce. I encourage any restaurant manager to have a meal in this place to discover what actual training can do. I work in the industry as a vendor and I assure you, more often than not most managers are hiding in the back of the house most of the time. read more

This place has the best Mexican cuisine that I have found. It's a 45 minute drive from my house, but well worth it. I have tried many other places, but have yet to find anywhere as good. Service is great, the remodel is beautiful and food is excellent. I recommend the cheese enchiladas. read more

This place has been remodeled on the inside and updated. Really nice vibe and it's fun to sit at the bar. The carnitas tacos are the best anywhere and the only thing I tend to order because they are so freaking good! The skinny margs are good due to the fact that they are the only margaritas on the menu that don't have some sort of orange flavoring in them ie grand mariner or Cointreau, yuck! When and why do all the Mexican places in Orlando now make their margs with those! A little triple sec is all you need! But I digress.... This time I tried a new margarita (see pic), but still prefer the skinny. The service is friendly, but can get a little slow when busy. Cook time is great, and the portions are large. First time here celebrating a birthday. The staff was very kind and friendly and we were seated very quickly after walking in. Shortly after being seated, our waiter came over to introduce himself and take our drink orders. The staff was great following covid protocols with with masks and having hand sanitizers throughout. We happened to be there during happy hour too, so all drinks were 2 for 1. I got the sangria and it was pretty good, just felt like it was maybe too sugar-y or possibly syrup-y so I ended up only having half of one. We were a big group so there were lots of different plates at our table, but everything looked good. The portion sizes are huge and presented nicely. I only tried my plate. I got the steak fajitas. The steak seemed a little dry to me and the tortillas were very flaky. It was good enough to eat when it came hot to the table, but once it started cooling down it didn't taste great. Since the portions were so large I did end up taking it home and even heated up the tortilla on a pan, but it was still too flaky and the rest of the food just wasn't cutting it for me. Overall, the staff is very kind and friendly and the happy hour deals are great. Since we were celebrating a birthday they even came to sing happy birthday as a group and provided a drink (not sure what it was). A happy hour that would make you feel BEYOND happy! Not only are the drinks buy one get in for their happy hour their food is AMAZING! These were not small shrimps, they were jumbo size! You can tell they make their Guacamole daily! Now, I personally wouldn't want the cheese on top of my beans but, the flavor was great! Love the atmosphere and the service was GREAT/FAST! It's not often we forgo Yelp and randomly walk into a restaurant but that's how we ended up at Azteca D'oro. My family and I come here a lot. They have an amazing taco Tuesday. $8 all you can eat tacos and $2 margaritas. Yeah, sign me up! On sundays they have bogo margaritas which can get ya in trouble ;-) The service here is usually pretty good. I've never waited very long to get my food or a refill. It's a rather large establishment, so it may get loud but nothing crazy. Their bar area is nice and has many tvs to watch the games. I usually get the white enchiladas which comes with slot of food. I never finish it. The tacos are good as well, the tortillas taste fresh. Sometimes I get the taco salad and it's great! It's a very large portion as well. One of the cool things they do is table side guacamole. They'll make it however you'd like and it's always amazing. With 2 meals and a few drinks our bill is usually $50-$60. read more
