I have to drop the star rating here because ever since my last review, they have NEVER had the Cheetos from Mexico in again. I don't know if my review set them off, or if this was supposed to be a secret and I blew the lid open on it and now they're not allowed to have Cheetos from Mexico per sanctions from the Mexican Cheetos Association, but it's really sad to never have seen them here again. I don't understand what crossed their minds to think selling this would be ok, it's slop labeled as "adobada" there's no meat it's just mush and tastes weird. The least you can do is actually sell what is labeled on the darn meat. This is gross. read more

What a neighborhood gem. This place has been here a long time. If you are expecting it to be like going to Whole Foods or even Northgate Market (like in Escondido), it's not... the place is small and they use the space for as many products as they can fit. I have been going just about monthly for the Salsa Fresca and Guacamole... they are made in house and are like nothing you can get at a regular store. As other reviewers have noted, you'll have to hunt for it - in the refrigerated case off to the left at the back of the store. They have many other things in there including salsa roja and crema. The meats always look good but I have not tried them (probably should). If you are one of those poor folks for whom cilantro tastes like soap, I'm afraid you may be out of luck since both have quite a bit blended in... if not these are a definite try try. I think they are just a little over $4 each. NOTE: they are not cooked or pasteurized in any way so you only have about 5 days from purchase date to eat them before they will go off. Though you will have trouble keeping your hands off them for that long. read more

Updates review and it gets even better. They have different types of tamales over the weekend including vegetarian ones. They are delicious and a great way to add an extra dish to a party without any effort. Husband also got carne and chicken and our friends loved it (they took the leftovers home). I've been looking for a Mexican market for awhile now because I love to make tacos. I'm surprised there's not many in San Diego (not that I know of anyways). I found this place through Yelp and I'm so happy they have everything I need to make delicious tacos - plus everything was so cheap! The shop is small and old but they have a pretty good selection of tortillas, salsa, meats and produce section. On top of that, there's a lot of Mexican snacks and candy. It made me feel a little nostalgic because I loved eating Mexican candy as a kid. I'll be back again for sure! read more

Great little hole in the wall mom and pop Mexican market with lots of Mexican goodies. There's always plenty of parking in this plaza and the people who work here are great! The prices of the grocery items are decent and the meats are great. It's perfect for taco night! We got some meat, spices, guac, and Mexican candy today. it's a small Mexican supermarket located in a corner of a plaza filled with all kinda of stores/tailor/laundromats. I wanted to try a tostilocos. Tostilocos are typically tostitos chips, topped with pickled long curly trips of pork rind, cubes of cucumber and jicama, hot sauce, Chamoy (pickled fruit sauce), lime juice, and Japanese peanuts. I asked for it with flaming hot Cheetos and no peanuts. It was a wild party in my mouth. It's not for everyone but I can see how someone who is preggo would appreciate this crazy concoction. read more

What an awesome find!!! I needed to get some last minute stuff for my son's Taco Twosday birthday party and came across this in Yelp. I'm glad i went! Location It is off Camino Ruiz-about as far north as you can get before you need to turn left to go up sorrento ridge. It's in the awesome strip mall with a bunch of other cool shops. The "Spot" Ok, it is unassuming from the outside. I did get some odd stares as I walked in with my 5 year old, but it's fine. It's a tight little shop, but they have a bunch of awesome stuff that I would typically need to drive much farther away to find. A ton of ripe avocados!! All the ingredients for guacamole and fresh salsa OR you can buy theirs. They have a meat section, but we didn't buy any. I think other reviewers said it was really good. The ceiling is full of piñatas that kept my son entertained when he wasn't lobbying for candy. They have a lot of the Mexican ingredients for recipes if you can't find in your local grocer. I couldn't help snagging some tortillas, salsa, and jalapeños on my way out. What did I go in there for? Jarritos...and they have them in the individual side and large size. I bought the large for the party. Oh, if you want Mexican candies or pan dulce-yep they have that there too. If you are in the sorrento valley/Carmel valley area where there is just a serious lack in ethic food and culture option, head over to this little spot! It isn't that far! read more

Wow. Who knew that so much could fit in this tiny store! They utilized every square inch of this place (ceiling included) so that they can provide you with awesome products to purchase and enjoy. In the back is their fresh meat counter. Probably the top selling meat products are their carne/pollo asada which are super cheap. At $3 a pound (compared to Vons $6-$7 a pound) you can't beat the price. We grilled the carne asada the next night for dinner and it was soo delish! The meat was lean and flavorful. They also sold many Mexican specialty items, including big and pretty pinatas. The workers were soo helpful and friendly. My original plan for Cinco de Mayo was to go to the Vallartas or North Gate up in Escondido for meat. I ran out of time and remembered reading good things about the meat at Azteca which was much closer to home. Coming here on Cinco de Mayo, I would have thought they would run low on meat. I was wrong! The meat was fresh and plentiful, with a wide variety to choose from. The guy behind the counter was friendly, quick, and helpful. I got 1.5 pounds each of the marinated chicken and the adobada pork. It came out to be a little over $12 total which I felt was a great price. The taste was great and everyone enjoyed the tacos we made that night. I'll definitely be back on a more regular basis. You can make a quick, easy, affordable, and delicious dinner any night by stopping by Azteca for some marinated meat! read more

This humble little shop is easily missed off of Camino Ruiz. In fact this was the first time I had ever ventured this far north up this road. What amounts to two short narrow shopping aisles is an array of Mexican and some Asian goods. Right up front is a display of fried pork skins. In back, a small meat section. I looked around for a bit and decided to grab a cold drink. I found something I've never had before, a pink guava drink in a tall can... Made in Taiwan. Most people were buying phone cards, for what that's worth. If you're looking for a place to kill time, this probably isn't it. The only place around my part of town where I can get legitimate tortillas, salsa, thin slice prepared carne asada and Mexican products. This is definitely our go to every time we decide to make carne asada. It beats driving 30 minutes south to National City or 30 minutes north to Escondido. read more

This place is a perfect little gem. I have been doing local snap swaps with online pen pals who want to try Mexican snacks, and this is the perfect place to get them. There are very little Mexican markets in North County (you might be able to find them in 'international' produce places like North Park and Atlas (which is unfortunately closing), and sometimes I'm too lazy to make the trek to Northgate or Vallarta. I appreciate the little, fun sized candies for sale as well as the smaller bags of chips like Takis. They also have fresh produce and carry a variety of Mexican bread and pastries, like bolillos and conchas. Apparently they also make snacks like tostilocos, and I hope to try it someday! Four stars because today I was thinking about purchasing some spicy mango/watermelon lollipops they had in the back near the deli, and all of them were semi melted and super sticky, which was kind of gross. I have always gone here for meat or any time i want to make a Mexican dish. A few days ago I went and grabbed two pounds of marinated meat and I ate some for dinner and had left over I cooked meat for the next day. When I cooked the rest of the meat I went to cut it up for tacos and one piece looked like it had extra fat on it and when I put it on the cutting board something slipped off of it! It was a used band aid! I called and asked to speak to a supervisor and all I got was the owner Ian here he'll be here tomorrow. I don't have the time to be waiting on an owner to complain about something so disgusting. I fed my daughter this meat as well as my husband. I am never going here again. read more

We come here for ingredients we can't find in our local market (e.g. dried chipotle pepper pods). The store is packed with all varieties of groceries and products. Inside it's more dense than a typical supermarket, but that's a good thing in my book. I'm glad this market is here. I only wish it was located closer to where I live. :-) read more

This is my emergency dinner/last-minute grilling go-to joint because I can walk to it from my house. You could probably touch both sides of the wall if you stretch your arms out but the meat and cheese counter is top notch. Carne/pollo asada for ~$3/lb and the Oaxacan cheese is really good and affordable. Get some cotija and crumble it on scrambled eggs for a nice flavor enhancer. The veggies are hit or miss so I wouldn't really go here for that. Nice folks selling good stuff. Next to the laundrymat in the Little Caesar's strip mall. read more

We were so curious as to what the little Azteca Mexican Market had behind it's doors after driving by a few times and seeing the glowing Yelp reviews. One five minute venture into the store today, though, had us swear it off for life. I can't even think about the store now without gagging. What I thought we were going to see was a quaint little market....boy was I wrong: -- Claustrophobics, beware. It is jam packed, wall to wall, with junk. Random VHS tapes for $1.99 in a bin, surrounded by cleaning supplies, and candy, and cans of beans. The aisles are s-m-a-l-l .... enough for one person to pass through. From the ceilings they have pinatas hanging down - every inch and corner of the store is filled with something. -- Produce section in the back corner was just a bucket of limes and garlic, and old ones at that. -- The absolute worst part was the deli case with "fresh" meats and cheeses. As we neared the section (which is really only a few steps from the front door - this place is crammed and tiny - have I mentioned that yet?) we almost gagged from the smell of feces. Poop. Crap. Whatever it was ... it was the nastiest thing I've ever smelled, let alone next to the raw meat section! I don't care HOW CHEAP the carne asada is, there is no way in hell I'm going to buy anything that smells so absolutely putrid and noxious. I turned around and walked right out, trying not to throw up. All plans of going to grab dinner at the Mexican restaurant next door were thwarted. After seeing and smelling the rotting meat smells in the store, there was no way we were going to eat Mexican food. It took a good hour before we even felt like having dinner. A market should not smell like that, that much I know. I'm usually fair with my reviews and rarely leave bad ones unless I am really offended....and this place did just that. Do yourselves a favor and stay away.....unless, of course, you are a fan of cheap meat counters that smell like gas station restrooms, in the desert, that have not been flushed in weeks. read more
