Free chips and salsa is offered, along with cheese dip and guacamole for a charge. Service is great, fast, and friendly! I very rarely write a review but this is one exception I've been patronizing Azteca #1,,,,, I believe they call it on Brady Street for many years and I have been very happy with the service ,,and it was a nice experience well I'm sorry to say things have changed the last time I was there ( approximately 2 months ) I was not real happy but I thought that was just an off day I went there again today ( Aug. 25th ) and it confirmed what I suspected it has gone downhill BADLY the service was pathetic The waiter had a BAD attitude ,, was just pitiful . I sat outside on the patio with my dog when I arrived I found the tables were just very dirty and the area around them there was Popcaan sitting on the table I finally got service and I asked the waiter if he would clean the table and he made a big deal about that. I shouldn't have to even say that I left him no chip and I probably won't be back again and that is sad I hope that the owner May read this and pay attention because this is not good business. The Good: Surprisingly authentic Mexican food, EXCELLENT service, bright & comfortable atmosphere. The Bad: Not many vegetarian options (not unusual for Mexican restaurants). My spinach burrito was literally just sauteed spinach in a tortilla, but the rice and beans were awesome, as was the homemade salsa. The Food: Delicious rice and beans, awesome homemade salsa & fresh chips. My boyfriend got the steak tacos -- I normally don't love steak but the flavor was incredible and the steak was perfectly cooked, it was delicious! The Service: Excellent. The second we walked in we were greeted by a line of waiters, one of whom promptly led us to our table and chatted with us while someone else immediately dropped off waters, chips and salsa. Fast and friendly service put our experience on another level, we were so happy to have found this spot while traveling across the country! We felt welcome in this huge, colorful, comfortable restaurant. As we were eating a family of ten was seated next to us. At some restaurants large tables have a hard time getting seated without fuss -- at Azteca, they were warmly welcomed and when their food was ready, our waiter dropped off every single plate to the right person at the huge table with no hesitation, I was impressed! Man, I can remember going to this place back in nine... no 2000 til about 5 years ago. The old man used to run it. He would have mariachi band and travel along the dining rooms and share shots of tequila and fried ice cream with the patrons. The menu was relatively affordable and the place was always packed. Sizzling hot plates passing by you constantly. Consistent, quality, professional and friendly service. I used to visit probably twice a month religiously. It would be my go to place whenever my friends and I would go out for the night and we want to catch some food first and start with a margarita. Anytime family coming to town we would always go out to Azteca.... oh the good old days... Now days the food quality has pretty much seeped down to the level of Rudy's Tacos but twice the cost. Took the family last night and they were playing some 70s disco music. It was fairly dead for a Friday evening and I was curious at first, but then once I seen the menu I understood why. They had recently marked the prices up over 20% for pretty much every item on the menu. The service was lousy as our server would probably give us 45 seconds to a minute and a half between each time she would ask if we're ready to order. I could never make a clear decision because I was so taken aside by the price inflation.. The atmosphere has changed drastically and that is one of the main reasons that I had always went back to Azteca. I finally decided on the L grande because it was a little mix of everything and I had already made the decision that I would probably never return so I may as well go all out.. The food flavor was bland. It seems like they no longer prepare things by hand per se. Everything tasted like it came out of a can or was the cheapest way of preparing. I understand business and that there's a mode of cutting costs and maximizing profits. You have to make changes here and there. I get it, but it really feels like you have killed every single desire I ever had into going to your restaurant. Which in my opinion directly affects your ultimate goal. That goal of having a successful restaurant. Which is something that used to be. I sincerely wish the newer owner(s) luck in the future but I will not be returning unless I hear that they have turned stuff around and went back to their old ways. read more

Azteca is my go-to place in the QCA for Mexican food. Somewhere along the way, the wonderful residents of Iowa decided that Mexican food should consist of super bland beef tacos in flour tortilla and corn hard shells, and they like it that way! Thank goodness Azteca offers traditional mexican plates such as, arroz con pollo, fajitas, carne asada, and my favorite, what i always order, the Pollo Jalisco. Chicken with onions, mushrooms and cheese sauce.Most entrees are served with tasty rice and beans which fill you up! Guests are served complementary chips and salsa when they sit down, the chips are good, and the salsa is above average, my wife says I shouldn't judge salsa though, because I always add a bunch of the green habanero hot sauce to it. (What ca I say? Heat is my thing!) I read that someone had health concerns with this particular restaurant. My wife and I eat at Azteca once or twice a week, every week and we have never gotten sick. The food is great, the waiters are kind, efficient, and good at what they do. If you are looking for a great sit-down Mexican restaurant in the QCA, then I recommend making the drive to Azteca! This is by far our favorite Mexican food in the QC area. As mentioned by Shaun T., the salsa here is one of the best things about this place. The food is always good, and consistent. My fiance and I aren't huge fans of 100% authentic Mexican food, and Azteca's food strikes a nice balance between Mexican and Americanized-Mexican style. This place is always busy with a diverse crowd, sometimes rowdy, and always returns the same result. Extremely casual is the atmosphere- loud is the noise level. This is not hole-in-the wall Mexican food! They do have the long list of numbered combos, the obligatory margarita machine, and birthday serenades, but this place is a hidden gem. There's a reason it's always full during operating hours. Did I say full? I meant to say packed like a sardine tin! The scary part is that they just expanded to twice the capacity back in 2004, and yet pick any time of any day, and the restaurant will be at least half full. The food is above average, but the real hidden treasure here is the salsa. They are family owned and operated, and the cashier makes the salsa fresh every day. It's free along with the fresh (heated!) tortilla chips, and it has what I consider the perfect balance of cilantro, tomatoes, onions and garlic often determined our destination for dinner that night. I often threatened to stick a straw into the decanter they put on our table to pour into the smaller serving bowls, and so has every other person I've taken here. I've since moved to Chicago, and I've yet to meet a better, or even an equivalent salsa. That says something! If you're from a bigger city and just passing through the midwest on I-80, or you just moved to the area, do yourself a favor and go here at least once. It has a great leisurely atmosphere, and absolutely flawless (fastest ever!) service regardless of how busy they get. You won't be disappointed. read more

Was excited to try out this restaurant. My friend and I wanted drinks and appetizers. We got all kind of dips, good selection. They had a good margarita drink special that my friend and I took part in. The service, on the other hand, was horrible. I don't think I have ever had such bad service. The atmosphere was cute, standard Mexican restaurant atmosphere, plus a fish tank for the kiddos to look at. The salsa was super watery and lacking flavor, I was not a big fan. Plates were super hot, which was announced, but also should be considered a liability! I had a kid with me and I was horrified he'd burn himself, I made him wait a few minutes to eat because of it. My enchiladas arrived with big tomato slices like you'd find on a sandwich instead of diced, which was different, but I was concerned that my entire dish was smothered in sour cream and sauce and guac, I was wondering what was hiding in there... most other restaurants I'm familiar with plate these things nicely and off to the side instead of slopping them all over the dish. My husband's carne asada tacos were pretty damn gross. SUPER greasy and the meat was just... off. Trust me, I'm Mexican. I know when a taco is bogus. Oh, and no horchata (only on certain days?) and super limited selection of Jarritos. Boo. I just really wasn't all that impressed with this place. Came here based on Yelp reviews, my first Mexican dining experience in the Quad Cities, and it was no bueno. Typically the guacamole is "chunky" which shows bits and pieces of tomato, cilantro, onion etc. Theirs didn't show any of it. So this mustve been accommodated to american standards. I always make sure to come here everytime I'm in the QC area. The food is delicious, cheap, and the staff is very prompt and friendly. I never have to ask for a refill of chips or soda. The chili relleno is amazing, and this is the only place I can find where its more like a dip than a bug stuffed pepper. read more

I went here and ordered Steak De La Casa, which says it's ribeye with "French Fried" and you know, I HAD to have it. LOL My wife had chicken fajitas, delicious, delectable. It came in a large heap. My wife ate it all, with no leftovers. My ribeye arrived and it was Very tasty, but it was the THINNEST cut imaginable; breakfast steak thin. I must say, though, it was the tastiest ribeye I have ever had. The topper on the evening was the musicians that travelled the joint serenading patrons, I walked out with a mile wide smile. We got there prior to noon for an hour lunch break. I was in first so I ordered our 2 drinks. We sat there for 20 minutes before they took our order. She took the (lady who walked in 10 minutes after us) order. She had her food, we had to literally flag the waitress down. She had an attitude from that second on. I ordered my food and he ordered his, no soda refill, another 20 minutes and he gets the manager, they literally bring out my food with half the food on it. No tortillas for my fajitas. He ordered 3 tacos no beans or rice. He received 2 tacos with rice and beans. He complained, the manager again came out after he was gone and asked if he wanted another taco???? Do you see him sitting here? He is at work. This lazy manager was in the back the whole time while the store filled up, until we bitched at that point she brought her big ass out of the back. Horrible service, food was mediocre, and they can't get an order taken or delivered in a timely fashion. It was over an hour I was there on an hour lunch. She didn't offer us a free drink a refill, she charged us full price! We were looking for a weekly place to have a nice lunch and spend quality time together.
