A return visit to Duck City Bistro! Love the circus atmosphere with the chef standing in front of the case and presenting and describing the daily specials with a flourish when you first walk into the restaurant. One of the appetizers was a morel mushroom soup which was downright exquisite. They also had a 30 oz lightly smoked lobster tail. We didn't get that but noticed several people did and it looked amazing. There is a range of seafood, beef, chicken, duck, etc.; all with interesting presentations. And the desserts are great too. We had the carrot cake and a chocolate chip cookie with toppings. The cookie was about 6 inches in diameter! Duck City Bistro is an all around fun time with great food and epic presentations. I am writing this review to warn future patrons of the hidden price gouging that goes on at this restaurant. We dined on February 13th-we were excited, as our reservation was made due to an enthusiastic review of a friend. There was a bit of a show from the owner when he was introducing the featured items, which we found endearing. The drinks were good, although hardly uniform, as multiple people in our party ordered the same drink but they were served in different glasses with varying levels of alcohol. The menu was heavy on the steak and seafood, and there were no prices listed. We ordered the duck (signature dish) and the crab legs. No mention from the waitress on any pricing (and shame on us for not asking). The meal was good, although nothing outstanding. We were happy with our experience until the bill came. The crab legs alone were $300!!! Our jaws hit the floor. We have dined in many upscale restaurants (Manhattan, Miami, Chicago) and we have NEVER paid close to that price tag for crab legs. We spoke to the owner Jerry, and he issued excuse after excuse. He stated that he paid "$100 per pound" and our order consisted of 1.5 pounds...so we were up-charged $150?! He was incredibly defensive and non-apologetic regarding our experience. Our take home point to him was if you're going to charge that amount of money for a singular menu item, you need to disclose the price when people order. Our bill was over $500 for mediocre food and left us with such a poor experience. That's more than we spend on an entire month dining out. We felt swindled and taken advantage of. Shame on us for not asking the price, and shame on Jerry and this restaurant for charging such an outrageous price for a menu item. BEWARE!!! In-your-face kind of place when I wanted romantic and high-end. I didn't know what I was in for. Didn't do enough research. An "event" place, meaning to go for special events and they also try to make eating there "an event" but only on arrival. We both agreed we could live without the loud, barking entryway show going over the menu items using tired, un-appetizing example plates. I worried I was about to get food poisoning. You're on a conveyor belt of service from start to finish. Food was incredibly and inedibly salty. Carnival-like size meat portions and freak-show menu items (pork chop stuffed with ham). It's not elegant, or inventive or even simple classics. It's just brash for brashness sake. I didn't enjoy it. We were seated on the side patio which has none of the atmosphere of the restaurant inside, which is the only thing I liked about it. Good service, the staff is working very hard. This place is obviously the brainchild of the chef. I heard Chef Ramsay in my ear the whole time I was there. I didn't want such an enormous piece of meat so I got the salmon. Because the salmon was on top of the mashed potatoes, and canned crunchy onions were on top of the crusted salmon (which made the crust on the salmon mushy) it all descended down into a big salty, slimy pile that all tasted of the same thing. Garlic salt, garlic, oil, more salt. The prices are absolutely INSANE. North of $80 per plate (yes there are less expensive alternatives but very few). Frozen desserts, not house made. I will say what I liked: They serve a complimentary roasted whole garlic bulb with bread (bread comes from frozen) which if you love roasted garlic, is something you normally pay for as an appetizer. I was surprised to see that. They had a descent wine list, nice to see a Sancerre. Overall this place is overcharging its customers with really (really) bad food in clown-like huge portions with a lot of silly and tired fanfare at the doorway. I was traveling to Davenport on business. What a hidden gem this place was! I was there on a Tuesday night. It was bustling. The chef greeted me when I came in the door and told me about the daily specials. I ended up having the walleye and it was superb. Highly recommend it. I will be back soon. read more

The good first: We made reservations. Our table was ready upon arrival. The food was very good, and our waiter, Aiden, provided great service. I also felt the pricing was fair market for the food choices. The ambiance has potential; however, the restaurant itself feels a little dated. We were seated in the former outdoor area, which was not a major issue. The most disappointing part of the evening was a very loud party of 12 seated in the rear of the restaurant. I took my husband out for a nice birthday dinner, and much of our meal was overshadowed by loud laughter, talking, and cursing from that table. I would suggest possibly creating a more dedicated area for large parties in the future to help preserve the dining experience for other guests. Other than that, everything else was good. read more

We came to Bettendorf to celebrate our anniversary and all the food we ate did not disappoint. Including Duck City Bistro. Parking is street parking, or there is a parking garage that is nearby. From arriving, our server, who was also the one that explained our main entrees at the entrance was very knowledgeable and entertaining. In fact, the whole crew was entertaining, the vibes were amazing from beginning to end. I had an espresso martini which they did not skimp on and made sure I got every oz of that pour and hubby got an old fashion, both were delicious. Hubby got the duck as his entrée and it was cooked to perfection. Very tender, tasty and savory. My NY strip was huge, I was only able to eat a little more than a quarter of it. It was cooked well, had the char taste and rissoto was very savory. We did not have room for dessert, but since it was our anniversary, our server still brought ups a chocolate dipped strawberry. Fabulous! Has to be in the top 3 restaurants of my life. Wow! The chef immediately welcomes and tells you the specials for the night in a vaudeville kind of way. Everything sounds amazing. We had the smoked pork chop with Swiss cheese and ham and the veal Marsala, crab cakes and lobster bisque. Yes, yes, and yes. While I have had a better crab cake, it was still fantastic. The lobster bisque was perfect and not sweet but savory. The garlic creamy salad was super garlicky and creamy. The bread was a little more browned and amazing with the roasted garlic to spread on the bread with butter. The pork chop smoked with ham and Swiss cheese was the best I have ever had and there was something magical about the crust on the outside of the pork. My husband loved the stewed apples. The veal Marsala was almost too sweet and yet I loved it. There was plenty of sauce. The mashed potatoes had a slight crust and were creamy and full of flavor. The awesomes: Chef is very enthusiastic and is very present. Leaves a few Easter eggs at some tables. Look hard and you will find. The food for most part is very good. Not everything. But most things. Study the reviews and order smartly. Servers. Are young kids. So not the sophisticated level you might expect at the price point. However, they always smile, pay a lot of attention to you and find out answers when they don't know. The less than awesomes: Prices are higher than quality level calls for. There are many examples, but one that really stands out is the shrimp cocktail. Chef brags on website and in person that these are the biggest shrimp you will find. Um, no. Compared to any steakhouse in a big city, these are not huge. And he charges about 20 dollars for theee of them (approximately $7 per shrimp?!). You can go to a good level grocery store and get same size for about 14 dollars a pound. Some of the best ingredients get buried in heavy sauces and mashed potatoes. Morel mushrooms for example, the morel appetizer breads and fries them. They may as well be anything. The morel flavor is gone. Or veal medallion dish with morels. Buried in heavy brown sauce on top of huge pile of mashed potatoes. Cannot taste the morels. Other similar missteps. Recommend skip dishes with the heavy sauces. Or you will not experience flavor of the main ingredient. On plus side, his morel bisque and his eacargot as appetizers are both excellent and uniquely done. For entree, suggest you definitely explore some of the specials as they show effort at creating something tasty with more unique ingredients. The wine list. Omg, this list is basically 10-15 dollar bottom level wines being portrayed as sophisticated and marked up about 400 percent. Then there are a couple of excellent quality wines but they are marked up more than 400 percent. I don't mind paying up for wine but please spend some effort cultivating a good list. Not the wines you can get at happy hour at most other bars and restaurants. There are one or two wines on list that are unique and fairly priced. Like the Easter eggs scattered around the restaurant, if you find and order one of these, you won't be disappointed. Conclusion: Despite the con's, highly recommend. Fun experience and if smart in ordering, is very good meal. Also, did I mention this is the Quad Cities??! For small town dining, this blows away anything else. Finally, the chef. We went to Duck City for dinner tonight while staying in Le Claire. Unfortunately, it was a very disappointing experience. Our server was apparently new and had little training. She was unable to answer simple questions about the menu. We ordered the mussels and pomme frites for appetizers as well as the garlic salad. For our entrées, I ordered the ahi tuna and my husband ordered the smoked pork chop stuffed with ham and Swiss. Our mussels came in a bowl with no spoon to serve them, no bowl for the shells, and no little forks for pulling them out of the shells. The sauce was good, but not a good match for mussels. We asked for the spoon to dish up the mussels, and our server said, "sure, I'll take care of that for you" - then came back a few minutes later with only the little forks. We asked 2 more people for a spoon, until we finally asked a bus boy, who was wonderful and brought one immediately. The pommes frites were the only really good thing. The garlic salad was good, but nothing to write home about. The server came back and asked me what temperature I wanted my ahi tuna? I was confused - the menu calls it sushi grade ahi tuna, so I want it raw, as it should be. When I got it, it wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either. It didn't really have the great flavor I've had from ahi tuna at many other places. The wasabi that came with it definitely wasn't real wasabi, as I had a huge chunk with the few bites I had, just to add some flavor, and it didn't light me up as real wasabi will do. My husband had 2-3 bites of his pork chop, which was the size of his head, but overcooked. Of course, that was after waiting a few minutes to flag down someone to bring a knife to actually cut it with, since all we had been given was forks. The server came and saw we barely touched our food, but just asked if we wanted a to-go box. We quickly said, "no." We contemplated giving dessert a try. We asked her what the pineapple croustade was exactly and she said, "pineapple with a flaky...let me get a menu" (which we had already seen and had no description), so we just said we would just pass on dessert. Caution!!! Review your bill prior to paying. No prices are listed on the menu. We ordered lamb chops $70. And a NY strip steak $80. Waiter had to go ask about prices as he said he didn't know. We also ordered an appetizer of Brussels sprouts $15.95 but asked that it come when our meals arrived. Bill included an extra $15. charge and added the Brussels as an entree charging $30.95 for a small plate. When we questioned the waiter he said a lot of people complain. This was our first time to Duck City and we decided to go for our 12-year anniversary. I have lived the QC almost my entire life and when I told people I had never been before, they were always shocked. Honestly, I probably couldn't have afforded it when I was younger! We were greeted by Chef Jeremy who explained the night's menu in what I understand is his regular presentation. It was a little over the top for me, but I appreciate the uniqueness and effort. I'm just not sure if the ambiance of the place lends itself very well to a guy yelling and banging pots as soon as you walk in. I'd probably like a more informed wait staff telling me personally about the nights special. Again, this is just me and some people may love this grand entrance! We were seated right away and if you've never been here the seating is pretty packed in. As soon as we sat down, I noticed our table wobbling! I don't know about you, but this is one of my MAJOR pet peeves. I can't stand a wobbly table in a cafe, let alone a fine dining establishment! When I wobbled the table and looked underneath, the waitress said, "oh, do we have a table problem?" When I mentioned there was a dirty napkin under the table she just suggested it was probably to keep the table from wobbling. I knew that no matter how good the meal was, I would not be able to give this place 5-stars. Oh yea, the meal! We started off with the bread and the garlic. I'm not a big fan of raw garlic if roasted properly, which this was just a little underdone for my liking. Next, we went with the shrimp cocktail. These things are freakishly large. Seriously, where do you even find shrimp this big?! The cocktail sauce was slightly above average, but there is also a dangerous piece of raw horseradish dropped in the middle. Just a chunk of raw horseradish. Thankfully, we were warned about it, but how about adding it to the sauce to taste and leave it at that? Just dropping a raw piece of horseradish into the middle of a bowl of shrimp cocktail is just an accident waiting to happen. My wife ordered the lobster bisque which was just a tad on the salty side, but the texture and flavor was otherwise excellent. We were also brought the two garlic salads at the same time as the soup which felt rushed. I would have rather had the soup, then the salad to give us time to relax. Our main courses were the line caught barramundi which was a nice fish, cooked perfectly. The sides were a risotto that felt just a tad undercooked but that just might be chef's preference. The dish was also served with some vegetables which were decent outside of the carrot which was perfect! My wife had the 8oz fillet. This was the star of the show. It looked a lot bigger than 8oz and was cooked to perfection. The seasoning was nice and not overpowering. The garlic mashed potatoes was also exceptional and her dish contained the same vegetables along with an artichoke fritter. This fritter had us curious and honestly didn't sound that appealing, but I can say it was amazing! Our drinks were only a sparkling water, Diet Coke, and a mock tail. No wine or booze for us. The total of this meal was $150 before tip. I am a decent tipper, so it pushed us close to $200. I feel like this was a little on the high end, but this is a well established place with a great reputation in downtown Davenport. It is also right across the street from the Adler Theater so there is probably a premium for convenience for show goers. Without a doubt one of the best meals I have ever had. The restaurant is an exciting inviting space. From the moment you walk in you know this will be special. As we came in Chef Jeremy was standing in front of a large d8splay case that showed what the evenings specials were. He explained each one in a dramatic manner and with great detail making the choice on what to have that much more difficult. Chef stopped by our table several times to see if everything was good everything was great. The garlic salad was really good with a unique take on croutons. Instead of rock hard cubes of bread, this was more like bread crumbs and made it much easier to eat. The entrees were superb. I had the duck breast with duck confit, with raspberry sauce that was phenomenal. My wife had the crusted salmon with horseradish sauce, that she really liked. Then dessert we chose the strawberry shortcake. A mountain of berries and cream on more of a shortbread cookie. RACIST RESTAURANT! My friend and I were having a beautiful weekend away from the city in this lovely little town in Iowa, and we decided to go out for dinner. So we called this place to make a reservation or check the wait time since it was Saturday. The person who answered our call said there was no need, that there was no wait, and that they had plenty of space, so we just had to show up. We arrived, and another couple had just arrived before us. We heard them ask if they needed a reservation, to which the waiter replied no, that they could sit wherever they wanted. Then it was our turn, and the waiter asked about our reservation. I told him we had just called and that they had said reservations weren't required. The waiter said THEY NEVER SAID THAT, but we had just heard them tell the couple who arrived before us that it wasn't necessary. SO! Not only did the waiter lie to us, but he also denied us service simply because we weren't white! WTF! If you going to Davenport or Rock Island avoid this RACIST places specially if you are Latino and Arabic. read more

We made reservations the night before and we were stuck in the very back corner and was then told to not sit in certain seats due to possibly getting hit...also was told they would have something written on our table as to why we were celebrating but it wasn't. I'm the kind of person where if you tell me to expect something I will. The duck was delicious and will definitely go here again if want duck. Overall the ambiance just seemed very confusing. Not sure if it was meant to be elegant or a sports bar due to the tvs and chalk brick wall. Over all, everything we had was good and Carlos was great at checking in on us. Me and my husband continue to come to Duck City Bistro each year for our wedding anniversary. We've also taken our mothers here for birthdays & Mother's Day. The new york strip is one of the best I've ever had, and they cook it perfectly medium rare each time I've ordered it. My husband has previously ordered the stuffed pork chop (which is HUGE) numerous times and he's also tried the beef wellington which was a special item at the time and he also loved. The brie cheese risotto that comes with the NY strip is so good and so is the special brown sauce that they put with it. The most recent meal we ate here, my husband got a bottled beer and I had two cosmopolitans. (which were a bit overpriced considering the serving size and alcohol content IMO, we'll probably skip getting alcoholic beverages in the future)- we also got NY strip steak and beef wellington (along with complimentary house salads and fresh home made bread with butter and 2 complimentary chocolate covered strawberries at the end of the meal) and our total bill was $193. We've easily spent around $130 eating at places like Red Lobster in the past. So, to eat at a cozy place like Duck City; who has excellent, speedy and attentive service- is worth the price to me. The interior is intimate, cozy, dimly lit and they're usually playing nice jazz music like Frank Sinatra. Very romantic for an anniversary dinner and a fun place to bring friends and family who are looking for a new dining experience. Chef Jeremy is extremely passionate about the food combinations that he comes up with and puts on a bit of a show to newcomers while presenting the current menu of the night. It was a very interesting experience. When we walked in, we were immediately greeted by an overtly enthusiastic host who also appears to be the chef and owner. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to clap when he was done, but it was extremely impressive and got me excited. Our server came to inquire about drinks and when I asked for the drink menu he responded, "the martini menu" to which he obliged and it was exactly what he stated it would be, a martini list. I asked if there was another drink menu, but that was the wine list. Okay, so I guess this isn't the place for an Old Fashioned. Fine, I just ask for a glass of Pinot Grigio and it was okay, nothing extraordinary and I was actually kind of surprised there wasn't more hubbub around the bar since this is fairly upscale. We had the chicken skewer in peanut sauce as the appetizer and it quite good. My coworker had a Cajun ribeye and it looked pretty fantastic. My dish was the signature duck dish and it was very tasty and well presented. They even wrote my name on the plate in sauce; which is a cute little added touch. I did not like that there were not prices listed on the menu. It makes me question the reason why and that doesn't feel good. I'll start this review with the one positive for this establishment, the table service is quite good. My waitress was very attentive and accommodating. They can have a 2 star for that. Now on to the bad--literally everything else. Starting with the obvious; the food looks like child's play. Ingredients with no visual or flavorful synergy piled up like an arts and craft project. I personally had the crab cakes, garlic salad, and ahi tuna. The crab cakes weren't terrible but were equitable to a microwave dinner, the salad was comparable to your local pizza joint salad, and the ahi tuna makes me feel bad for the poor fish that lost its life for this "dinner special". The wine menu is overpriced, 2-buck-chuck, you can find at most convenience stores--which transitions well into the next major con. This place is madly overpriced, and I don't mean in terms of numerical value alone (I've dined at places with costs I'm ashamed to admit). What I mean is the price is just ridiculous for the quality of ingredients, preparation, and cook especially considering the location. I strongly urge potential customers to not be fooled by the concept that price=quality. It seems to be a popular place for special events or celebrations but I vehemently recommend nobody wastes their special day here. Overall, the entire experience is just tacky. When you walk in they scream the specials at you for an uncomfortable amount of time, then you are sat at your table which has sheets of paper over it with your name written in crayon, and then when you eventually (emphasis on eventually) receive the food you see hilariously juvenile sauce scribbles/writing sprawled all over the plate. To conclude I simply cannot believe this place is considered a "fine dining" establishment among the locals. ESPECIALLY for the price. As soon as you walk in the head chef takes you to the display window where the plates are and breaks down the dinner menu with passion that show in the food. The shrimp was the size of my hand and had to be the best shrimp I've ever had. The steak was grilled perfect and was the biggest 8oz I've ever had. Another amazing meal at Duck City! We recently visited for my birthday and were blown away, as we always are... We started with the filet mignon steak bite appetizer. Delicious! We chose the New York strip with risotto as our main entree. Everything was cooked to perfection and the service was outstanding. I cannot recommend this place enough. Hard to sum up our first visit. The word that comes to mind is EXCEPTIONAL. You really just have to go and experience it for yourself. Dinner for four with a couple appetizers and a few drinks on the tab was still under $400 with a nice tip. We are hooked and will be back. Started strong - dwindled after The bread comes with roasted garlic and is absolutely delicious though could use a sprinkle of fresh cracked salt. The shrimp cocktail is huge and delicious (though also asked for fresh cracked pepper) The mains were ok - my biggest complaint is they come with horrible vegetables (and I love vegetables). They're literally sliced and steamed with absolutely no seasoning. Don't put something half hearted on the plate. My husband enjoyed his duck but the rice was just rice and similarly bland veggies. My filet was slightly overcooked (ordered medium rare, came medium) and again needed salt. Also when asked the waitress about dishes she goes, and I quote, "I've never tried a single dish here so I don't know". I know the younger generation has less worth ethic but common. Have them sample your main dishes. As far as cocktail, I had a dirty martini which was fine though salty (again ordered dirty so not upset). Husband got the mistress which tasted like apple juice (not necessarily bad just not as marketed) This review started as a 4/5 but as a wrote it realized more of a 3/5....it was pricey ($150 for 2 people and not in a metroplex) and each thing left me wanting something added or different - namely seasoning. read more
