Holy crap! This was some tasty Mexican food out in the middle of nowhere. Who knew there would be such a awesome little restaurant out in Antelope Acres. I thought it was a wasteland of solar panels. Do yourself a favor and get here. I had the chicken fajita tacos. The cheese enchilada. And tasted some of my friends chicken quesadilla. Not to mention the complimentary chips and salsa were pretty spectacular. I wish I could come back here more often. Well we sat there for 15 mins and our waitress never came back to give us the change. She walked by our table over and over and ignored us. Of the many good Mexican restaurants in the Antelope valley, Azteca stands out as earning a particular distinction. The food is made with love and tasty ingredients, served in what as far as I can tell is an authentic Mexican style. My particular favorites here are the carne al pastor, carnitas, and albondigas. My wife doesn't like rice (I know, but what can you do? She never grew up with it), and they never give her any grief about doubling up on the beans in their place. I've never seen her eat refried beans faster than here -- and indeed, they are tasty, with enough pepper in them to keep the taste interesting. me, though, I prefer the frijoles ollas -- whole pinto beans in their juice, with some onion and chili powder. One thing my wife and I do both like, though, are margaritas, and they seem particularly refreshing here. The place doesn't look like much from the outside, but it's pleasant and homey when you get in with lots of wood paneling and futbol on the TV. If you happen to be in this area of the world, make it a point to come by. If you are searching for particularly good Mexican food, make it a point to come by. If you are just plain hungry and want the sort of thing that your abuelita (or the abuelita you never had) would have fed you, come on by. read more

We drove up to see the poppies, and were starving after. Tuesday lunchtime, and the place was busy. There were only a couple of servers, so it was slow, but we had drinks and chips. It took a while, but it was totally worth every minute. I had the Molcajete. It was superb! It burst with flavor, but was not so rich that it set heavy after. It was a plentiful serving, along with beans and rice - I couldn't finish it all. The other members of my party had the shrimp fajitas, the chicken enchiladas suiza, and a cheese quesadilla for the young one. Everyone was thrilled with their choices. This was our first visit and I was very impressed! Our server José was awesome! He had several parties and STILL managed to take care of us. The menudo was delicious!! And we enjoyed our michelada. I have only been to this restaurant a handful of times but have become less impressed with it on each visit. Their margaritas are mediocre, the service is slow, the food doesn't come out at the same time or even within a reasonable timeframe of the other orders. This last time was the final straw. There were ants in the chip basket and a fly floating in my son's Shirley temple. How the server could have possibly missed that is inexcusable as it was prominent black in his pink drink. Then, the server had the mind boggling audacity to ask if we wanted another...um, nah we'll just drink the one with the fly. Really?! Despite requesting the manager several times, he refused to come out from the back to address these very serious issues. First the server told us there was no manager and when we protested that surely someone was there managing the place, the owners daughter came out...who is not the manager (by her own admission). She apologized profusely but the fact that the owner/manager refused to come out to our table indicates he does not value our business. I will never go to this restaurant again and have reported then to the health department. read more

A couple days ago I ordered a cheese enchilada combo to go. When I recieved my food the rice was hard and the ENTIRE meal was straight up cold. Now usually I love this place and have never had a problem, I'm hoping this was a fluke accident. Maybe they got new cooks? I'm not sure. Hopefully this wont happen again the next time I go. No good Mexican food in our area, then we found this small little hole in the wall restaurant with great reviews! I must say, the look does not give it justice but do not judge a book by it's cover! Very small but excellent service and the food was definitely authentic! You could tell they just started serving cocktails because the margaritas needed work but not one complaint about the food. Hot crispy chips, great salsa, carne asada and burritos amazing. I had fajitas which were mouth watering with fresh veggies and the corn tortillas seemed hand made. Great job! This is now our home go to restaurant for Mexican food! Just work on the cocktails and you will need a bigger place soon! read more

We live in antelope acres, and the old Azteca location was a staple. But the new place...please find a way to tone down the lighting and the noise from the echoes. It looks and feels like a high school cafeteria in a very off-putting way. We're definitely looking for a replacement restaurant for dinner, but will happily visit the old location for breakfast and lunch. Food is great just...zero ambiance in the new location. read more

Wasn't sure I wanted to go in based on the look of the building from the outside plus it is in the middle of nowhere. However, it had an 'A' rating in the window so we went in. Very nice inside, food was really good and the service was really nice, too. Spent the afternoon at the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve and afterward was looking for food close by somewhere in the area. After a quick online search I found Azteca but wasn't sure if we should go there because the photo of the place wasn't super inviting, however it did have a 4.7 out of 5 star rating with a bunch of reviews, so we tried it. Once we got there it was larger and comfier inside than it seemed like it would be from outside.. I was not disappointed with the food at all! I tried the Enchilada Suiza plate and ate every bite! The tortilla chips were freshly made and their salsa recipe was delicious. Girlfriend got a strawberry margarita which was also delicious! There were so many selections on the menu and I'd like to try almost all of them. I'll definitely be back on my next visit to that area.. Also, in my opinion the service was friendly and attentive. The only reason I don't give a full 5 stars is because while my dish was excellent, my girlfriend got pork carnitas and the pork was dry and kind of tough. She was not enjoying her meal quite as much as I did and I felt bad for her.. read more

Was here at their new location 8/26/17. The new place had been open one week. They seated us and finally after about 20 min. We had to ask if we could get a server to take drink orders. They had more bus boys then servers. My pre mixed Margherita had a fruit fly in it. When I tookmit to the bar hecmade one from scratch. Wasnt given an option for a non pre mixed drink. Took almost 30 min to get our food. Cheese enchilada was hard, beef taco shell all broken underneath, husbands chicken tacos that were suppose to be beef were very chewy. Beans were dry. Seemed like food had sat under heat lights for a while.. New place had almost too much lighting. Very few booths. Felt like I was in a cafeteria. There appeared to be a lot of sanitary issues as well. Too many to list. Dirty silverware, dirty clean up table rags over shoulders, dirty hands hadeling straws,etc. Old location had amazing food, service, etc. New place leaves a lot to be desired. May give them another chance in a month, but we'll look for another mexican resturant in the meantime time. read more

Stopped in tonight and was looking forward to a warm delicious meal like we remember the last time we visited. What a disappointment. The new place is not warm and inviting like the old one. Looks just like a coffee shop. Ugly place and none of us liked the new place. Service is non existent at this place. Server took our order and never came back. Asked the bus boy for chips but he looked at the chips and never came back. We had to lift the chip basket and call out to get someones attention. They gave us half a basket for 4 people to share so they are really CHEAP with their chips. We were the only table in the restaurant on a Friday night. It's not like they were busy. They were however busy socializing. Must be a sign. The food at the new place is not the same. Not sure if they lost their original chef. Ordered the Chimichanga. The food came out so fast, they must have quickly microwaved it. There is no way that they could have served our items fresh in two minutes. The rice was typical of Spanish rice, the beans were good but I love beans, the chimichanga was the smallest I have ever seen and with some weird gravy on top. The filling was fair in flavor but it was only filled with chicken and beef. Tasted like the meat was boiled. Not bad but not unforgettable and crave able. I was born and raised in Arizona where good Mexican food is essentially on every street corner. I moved to Tehachapi about a year n half ago and have searched for good Mexican food all over. I have ate at Mexican restaurants all over Bakersfield, Lancaster, and Palmdale and haven't found anything to my liking until I tried Azteca. To this day I still haven't found anything in the area other than Azteca. If you are wanting real authentic Mexican food than this is your spot. I drive all the way from Tehachapi when I am craving real Mexican food and all the other poser Mexican restaurants don't fight the craving anymore. This is hands down the best Mexican restaurant in Bakersfield, Lancaster, and Palmdale area. read more

Based upon recommendations from several of my wife's colleagues, we recently dined at Azteca, on a Saturday evening. We had been told (and hoped) that Azteca was better than either El Toreo D.C. in Palmdale (back in the good old days, before their food became sub par) and La Cabana in Acton - unfortunately, that proved to be false. Despite only being about half-full at 7:00 PM on a Saturday and having what appeared to be a large (but uncoordinated) wait/serving staff, it took nearly 20 minutes for a waitress to finally approach our booth (which was located within 12 feet of the entrance, so we weren't hidden away in some back corner), and ask if we had been waited on. We said "No", and she said that she would "... be right back ..." - well, "... be right back ..." did not happen for another ten minutes (so, now we're there 30 minutes without any drink or food order and no chips, salsa or water). When our waitress finally arrived, she left menus and then proceeded to walk to the adjacent booth (those people had been there before we arrived) and took their order (so these people must have been waiting at least thirty-five minutes to order drinks and dinner). She then returned to our table and took our order and said that chips, salsa and water would be "... right out...". There were at least five or six wait staff milling about and several of them spent about five minutes talking amongst themselves at the register next to the entrance, not paying any attention to the customers. Our dinners arrived about twenty minutes later. The food was only warm (definitely, not hot), and was bland-tasting, at best. Not great, not even really good, only just bland. My salad had a "thin" (i.e., watered-down) blue cheese dressing), no tomatoes, small slice of avocado. The carnitas on my tacos, was quite salty, and barely warm. My wife had a large salad, which was not that good. We ate, paid and left, vowing never to come back again. Neither the food nor the service, was satisfactory. read more

This place is so wonderful, I'd give even more stars if I could. What do we like best here? EVERYTHING. At least, everything we've tried so far, which is most of the menu. First of all, the chips and salsa are the best. Azteca makes their own so they're always fresh... and addictive. Many times we've brought most of our meal home, partly because of all the chips & salsa that we couldn't stop eating. As for the entrees... let's see, hubs loves the shrimp enchiladas (with flour tortillas). Second place would be a tie for the Taco Charro and the Fajitas Tostada (beef) My favorites include the Burro Colorado, beef enchilada, beef taco... oh shoot, just about everything on the menu is my favorite. It's all so good. And the iced tea here is freshly brewed, a big plus for me. (p.s. If you're a lemon eater like I am, the lemon slices they serve with the iced tea are larger than any other place in the A.V. and oh-so-good.) Check this out: You can get a salad or cup of soup with your meal for just one dollar. DO IT. The salad is always very fresh and so good, especially with the homemade blue cheese dressing. It's the best. For soup, I've had the Azteca Chicken soup and the Albondigas soup. Both are really good. Now... you have to save room for dessert! The flan is excellent; the best I've had anywhere. Try it once and you'll want it every time you come back (and you WILL come back). The fried ice cream (how do they fry ice cream and it not melt?) is a great treat and big enough to share with the whole table. It comes nestled in a cinnamon tortilla shell with lots of whipped cream surrounding it. Yum. Good service, good music and clean restrooms round out the relaxing experience here. Don't be put off by the location. The drive through the desert is pleasant and traffic-free, so just hop in your car and come see what all these great reviews are about.
