Had a wonderful morning at Azucanela! The food was absolutely delicious and the staff made us feel welcome. Laura and Carol were especially warm, cheerful, and attentive, which made the experience even better. We ordered the chilaquiles and the breakfast sandwich, and both were fantastic. The chilaquiles were fresh and full of flavor with crispy tortilla chips topped with a rich green sauce, egg, cheese, and red onion. The breakfast sandwich was a generous portion on a warm brioche bun with thick bacon, egg, chipotle sauce, and fresh greens. We also tried the churros, which were clearly made fresh to order. They were not overly sweet, perfectly crunchy on the outside and soft inside. The horchata coffee was absolutely divine and something I would come back just for. Everything here is made fresh, and you can taste the difference. The outdoor seating area with music created such a joyful, relaxing atmosphere and made the whole morning feel special. Coffee was AMAZING, I ordered two mazapan lattes. But don't come here thinking you will get good customer service. We understand places get busy with little staff but the cashier/barista yelled at both my boyfriend and her co worker. When I ordered there was four seperate customers behind me which we all ordered similar items as me. We thought she called our order first which was a misunderstanding on our part the barista then yelled at her co worker saying "it's not his" "i said it's not his" then when my boyfriend backs up she yells "it's not yours!" It was a simple mistake but did not mean she could yell at her co worker and a paying customer. Like I said we understand first hand being understaffed since my boyfriend and I work in the hospitality/food business. But the barista was just wiping the counter while she had 4 drinks without lids then it took her even longer to take our order plus 2 other customers orders came out when we all ordered similar items (just beverages.) read more

Azucanela had been on my list for quite some time. I was finally able to visit with a friend from work not long ago, and it was better than expected. Parking is very minimal. There are only a couple spots in the lot. It is very small, so you'll likely have to park on the street. The shop is nicely decorated, and very vibrant and colorful. They have a few swinging egg chairs you can sit in, which is a nice touch. The drinks & desserts are really good. I highly recommend coming here. read more

I don't know if I've ever met a breakfast burrito. I didn't like. Sure, some are more amazing than others. After a swim nearby, I get hungry for a delicious brunch of a breakfast burrito. Thought I would give this a try to eat on my way to work. I ordered a ham burrito and took it to go and started digging into it right away in my car. It was tragic when I realized that it had been premade and microwave as the outside was burning hot and the inside was completely cold. The thin tortilla was ripping from being stuck to the paper wrapper; inside were plentiful eggs, orange cheese, and shredded soft potatoes with a decent salsa verde on the side. I did not experience any ham in the third of the burrito that I ate. Maybe this would be good for people in the Midwest , but it was quite disappointing for an LA breakfast burrito. read more

This place is pretty cool. The ambience is very chill and retro. From the murals to the furniture, it's a great place to (what I imagine) host a party or your next get together. There's plenty of space. I highly recommend you sit in their outdoor seating area to catch some sun. I got the champurrado, churro sundae, Mexican avocado toast, and a chorizo breakfast burrito. This place is adorable! Smallest parking lot ever, fits about 4 cars maybe, but they have one so that's great! It's brightly colored and they have a couple of swim chairs. The inside is small but there's enough seating. They also have games available. If you keep walking to the back they have a patio with more seating. We sat outside and enjoyed the shade. It was also cooler outside than inside. The churros were hard. I know they have a nice crunch but these were a little more than usual. The camera was great, I just wish they had it on the side. It was too much since the lattes were also super sweet. My fault for not asking them to do half sweet. They have a variety of items in the menu. Everything sounded good. read more

Lots of seating options inside and outside with such intentional decor! I had the cafechata which is 1/2 cafe de olla & 1/2 horchata. That was only okay to me, but my friend had a cortado with pistachio syrup & oatmilk and loved it! It's a churrería so we had to try some churro bites. They were delicious! We ate at the nearby Zacatelas and needed some coffee before the drive home. Azucanela might have the smallest parking lot in town, but we did find street parking a block away. The inside is very eclectic and offered plenty of seating. I loved the blue ceramic tile on the counter. The coffee drinks are espresso based -- no cold brew, etc... and are generally sweetened. Maybe the barista was having a bad day, but she wasn't very friendly, though not rude either. She finished our order and put it on the counter but never called the number she told us. My wife had the cafe de olla and I had the house coffee, which was actually an americano. The cafe de olla is pretty traditional tasting and not fancy. The americano was average, maybe a bit too dilute. It was the only unsweetened coffee on the menu. The highlight was the churro bites. I have eaten many fresh churros, including those from the many pop ups around town, but these were better. I don't know what wizardry the use and I won't try to describe it, but it is a worth the trip alone. This is a really cute cafe but really tailored to a specific palette. The churros are delicious and a must-have if you're there. read more

This is my 3rd time coming here, and I don't really like it any better than the last time. I was expecting to really like their drinks since this was my first time trying those. The horchata iced latte did not taste like horchata at all, it only tasted like too much milk with a little bit of coffee.. 6/10 I had higher hopes for the strawberry horchata iced latte but that was also a 6/10, I'm not sure what type of milk they use but that's what I was able to taste the most, milk. My son got an horchata frappe and that one was good! Tasted like an actual horchata frappe. 9/10 As for the churros.. 7/10 They just don't taste fresh and crunchy... I've definitely had better... maybe they are just a little too thick so they can be fillable? Idk. The last time I was here the churros were hard and definitely not fresh, decided to give it another try since it's the closest churro spot to me but not coming again. read more

Churros? Say no more! Still warm when they arrive, even via Doordash, crispy crunch in every bite. The Churro Frambuesa comes with a homemade raspberry dipping sauce which is fun, and I love the Churro Rellenos which are stuffed with dulce de leche. Wash it down with the Chocolate Abuelita, a rich hot chocolate spiced with cinnamon. It's chocolatey without being overly sweet. What else can I say? They're churros and they're delicious! read more

Hawthorne doesn't have many places that highlight Latino culture like Azucanela does. This place was really great when they opened - especially for the location it's in. FOOD - Interesting adaptations on churros, very cutesy/trendy + a very decent quantity. I would recommend sharing. SERVICE & AMBIANCE - A few things I feel like I should point out: 1) the attitude that some of the employees have is unacceptable for a business. You can come in and be really nice and ask them how their day is going and they will still express some negativity towards you. I didn't let it bother me because I know people have moments and are going through whatever. But, my friend arrived after me and told me the same thing, but she experienced it more blatantly. She arrived 30 minutes after me, which tells me it's more than just having a bad moment, it's just an attitude. For a place that is only customer service facing... no bueno. 2) The volume that the music is at is wild to be for a cafe type spot - see the attached video. It almost felt like they were blasting the music to get us out of there. Same goes for how high the AC was, and it's been cooler out lately. 3) Personally, to me, the most important, is the preset tipping options given on their register is inflated. I would highly recommend doing a custom tip or checking the math before you select a button like I did. I got one drink that was about $5 and somehow the 20% tip was two dollars exactly. I didn't realize till later, but that's not OK for the percentage not to match what you actually paid. Would I recommend this place for people to go and grab a drink or some churros? Sure, support locally, but be mindful of the preset tips & if you catch an attitude just know, it's nothing personal. And of course, make up your own mind. Would I recommend using the space to sit down and have a conversation and/or study at? No. read more

Decent place to get your churro fix. The churros are soft and warm and no soggy inside. The churros are sugared very well and not too overwhelming. Their horchata latte was very good and also not overwhelming or sugary. The atmosphere is very casual and cute. They have lots of hanging swinging chairs and the backside patio is a nice open space to just chill and hangout. They also have a breakfast food menu and large coffee/tea selection so you don't have to go just to get churros. Parking is a pain to get to but there's plenty of street parking in the main street and residential areas. read more
