The Des Moines shop is the closest one to me and when I went there were half a dozen customers. I got a five bone prime rib. Prime cut. Not cheap but if you're looking for a great piece of meat, you pay the price for quality. One of the butchers tied it up for me and even seasoned it and gave me some recommendations. I put it on the smoker in the next day and it wasn't an incredible piece of meat. Everyone loved it and raved about it. Wow. If you are looking for smoked or cured fish as a souvenir from Seattle, you better put down that kitschy boxed stuff and come here! The fish here tastes and smells like the high quality, flavorful, well-made stuff it is. The fish looks beautiful too. They let us try the regular smoked salmon, the garlic, and the candied. All superb. Be warned the candied stuff - heck, all of them are addicting. The cost may seem high, but it is completely justified. You aren't getting bottom of the barrel keta (translated from native tongue to "dog") fish or "pink" salmon (only 1 tier up), you're getting fresh fish. There was no hint of gross "fishy" smell before or after eating. (To make your salmon last longer, may I suggest enjoying your salmon with rice and veggies, or in a sandwich?) They also sell high quality pork, beef, chicken, and other things in the freezer like sausage, duck, cheese. They also have pretty nicely priced wines for sale, from low $10s and up. We were excited to get some steaks for our Christmas Eve dinner. We bought 3 New York steaks for $63.77. We've cooked hundreds of steaks and these steaks were the toughest steaks we've ever eaten. It was not good quality meat. We cooked all 3 steaks and ended up throwing them out. We've been to this market before for lobsters. This is the first time we bought steaks here, trying to support a local business, and it will be the last. It was unfortunate we chose to buy here as our Christmas Eve dinner was ruined. We bought steaks that Thursday at a different place and cooked it the exact same way, temperature and time and they were 200% better! read more

what would a vegetarian do here, you ask? buy smoked salmon for a chowder since it IS fall now. before today i didn't ever think about going in here although i drive by it all the time. but some carnivore friends mentioned how good the smoked and candied salmon so this was my motivation. the service was excellent for what i was buying, considering i asked some questions about the "shelf life" of the candied salmon as opposed y the alder smoked pieces. i ended up opting to wait on that purchase but came away with $17 worth of smoked salmon which is getting put to use today. i'd go back for more and just seeing the selection, it made me think even a gift card from there would be fun to present to people who grill or like their cuts of meat a certain way. it was a worthwhile discovery. read more

At first I was kinda hating. Basic meats are kinda overpriced. But it's a butcher. Right? We are getting excellent cuts and payin for it apparently. I'm a chef and I openly say this place is overpriced $1.50-$1 per pound, if not more in some cases but.... Four stars for being on point, having knowledgeable people who work here. Always having rabbit. Always have bones for stalk. And will give me what other places can't. Most recently I got a pork crown roast. I'm not sure what happened to this place. They used to sell high quality meat, then it went downhill. Did their management change recently? We had 3 incidents since last summer. Last summer, we got 2 racks of pork ribs. They weren't cheap... we paid over $50 for 2 racks. When we opened the package, it smelled awful like it had gone bad. We took it back and the staff was nice enough to refund the money--thank you. We thought they just had a bad day. Ok. I have a bad day too so we let that one go. Then a couple of months later I got 2 ribeye steaks. The quality wasn't good, and they weren't cheap either. It was chewy and excessively fatty. We didn't return it because we cooked them already, although a half of them went into trash. We started to become really skeptical of B&E's quality. Then today, we bought their stuffed salmon. Driving home, we started to smell rotten fish in the car. We immediately turned around and got a refund. The shop staff was really nice about it (thank you) but this was strike #3 in less than a year. I think we had enough. I stopped in here to try their smoked wings and pork ribs. The store is large with a great display of fresh looking meat and seafood. I was immediately greeted by a person behind the counter, placed my order and browsed the place a little bit. They have quite a bit of prepared meats and seafood items, which is great when you just want to pick up, heat and eat. The store is clean, the people are friendly, and the smoked items were amazing! I heard about this from a friend from Hawaii. Finally was able to pop in a couple times and found excellent quality and array of meats and different cuts, some premarinated meat and everything was clean, service was good and distancing was in place. Tried the kalbi chicken which had great flavor though the texture was a little more firm than I was expecting, and the pork ribs were delicious too! Came here because of their famous Candy Smoked Salmon($28/lb). Everyone raves about it; It might not be as spectacular as everyone makes it out to be, but it is definitely very good, unique and something you won't find elsewhere. The name kind of threw me off because it says candy smoked. I was expecting something much sweeter but the smoked salmon flavor still comes thru and has just the right amount of sweetness to it but not overpowering. Service here is excellent too, they ask you if you're going to take it to travel and vacuum seal it for you if you are. They also have some really great jerky ($20/lb), they let us sample a few different flavors. We ended up getting about a pound of their "Thick and Tender" jerky which was as described, thicker cut and moist and tender. I especially liked the texture of it because it was not as hard and dried out. Besides the salmon and jerky, they are a high end butcher shop, so the meats will be higher priced than the local grocery store, but you get higher quality meats I'm sure. Im sure they have a select local clientele. For visitors, i highly suggest trying the candy smoked salmon, yes it's pricy but I'm just not sure where else you'd find something like this. read more

We bought a Wagyu Roast, it was very disappointing. The cost of $40 a pound, you would expect it to be really marbled, the marbling was hardly visible. It was also supposed to have been seasoned, unfortunately they did not follow through with my order correctly. I used to loveeeeeee this place. I would usually frequent the renton ish one but for Valentine's day I went to Burien location. Usually I get the prime dry aged rib eye and it's absolutely fabulous. Nothing can compare and I do believe it beats all the three four dollar sign steak joints in Washington. However I got the two new York 2 lobster tail special for Valentine's day. It seemed like a good deal. I know the new York cut wouldn't be as yummy and fatty as rib eye so no complaints there it was pretty run of the mill new York steaks...kinda like Costco and nothing special in my opinion. It was the lobster tails I had an issue with. The guy at the counter retrieved them for me. He was nice. When I defrosted and cut open one of the lobster it was this grayish color and had an incredibly fishy smell. Good Lord it was terrible! I checked the packaging and lo and behold, it was expired. Nonetheless, I still had to make dinner and I was so sad to not do my normal broiling but had to do a dread and deep fry to get rid of the horrid fishiness... I am upset because I love this place and often get my co-workers friends family ...random people I meet who ask me...people from church ..everyoneeeee to come here because I believed they were actually about the customers. This has always been a family "Go-to" for smoked salmon for every holiday. The candied is great, but personally I like the alder smoked. Nothing in Seattle is better. B&E is family owned and has expanded beyond Burien to 3 locations. I recently visited the Newcastle store, with an objective of bringing the best of the Pacific Northwest to Minneapolis. Done and everyone was impressed. Even though I didn't call in advance, B&E was able to accommodate, pack and store salmon and jerky (multiple types), to share with colleagues who've never experienced the job of B&E! SALMON CANDY! B $ E is my butcher shop. It's where I go when I'm going to BBQ something besides hotdogs and burgers. Tonight I got a nearly 2# Porterhouse (which is currently salt/peppered and on the grill), and some Kalbi Chicken Breasts for tomorrow night. Also, I can't leave without some Candy Salmon, but at $24 a pound I never buy enough. In fact, when my wife found the jerky in the fridge she started looking for the Salmon Candy. Busted! We had eaten it all before she got home. I should have saved her some, don't tell her I ate the last two chunks. I arrived at the shop about 10 minutes to close and I'm sure the guys were ready to get the heck out. That said, the robotic and annoyed "anything else..?" after each of my request was a little, I don't know - unnecessary? C'mon, you still got to lock the doors 3 minutes early :). Great selection, great staff, good prices. They have the bucket of iced whole Coho if you are looking to dive into the yearly Copper River madness. I have a 3.8 lb package of stuffed salmon waiting for us to grill tonight... it's filled with crab, shrimp, 3 cheeses and ritz cracker pieces - $8.99 a pound! It's not Coho, but it looks great to my East Coast eyes :-) They have smoked whole chickens, a wide variety of sausages, and even smoked pigs ears. There is venison and rabbit ( and other interesting cuts) in the freezer case. I make a pot of baked beans every year for Memorial Day and had several local made hot dogs to choose from... including an all beef option that was not cured. If I lived here I would shop here... I will stop by if I am driving past on 5 to see what other prepared goodness they have after salmon season ends :-)! read more

I'm more of a grocery store meat buyer myself, so going to a fancy meat place is a bit foreign to me. But, hosting Thanksgiving this year had me cooking my first turkey and I wanted a sure thing, fresh, never frozen bird. As I had done some research via my Facebook Foodie group I learned about B&E and chose them as my provider. I also had done a little research on the spachcocking of turkeys. This is where the butcher removes the backbone. This in theory allows your turkey to cook more evenly and much quicker, reducing the probability of it drying out for extended time in the oven. This service cost $5 and worked out great for our turkey! The B&E store is great, they don't have a "take a number" thingy so everyone kind of stares at each other trying to decide who goes next. Luckily most people in Seattle are polite, sometimes even too polite. It used to be that if you pulled up to an uncontrolled intersection in your car, ALL the cars would try to wave everyone through, disregarding the rule of "yield to the right", but with all the influx of people to the area, this doesn't happen as much anymore. What I now see is everyone trying to pile through the intersection first, disregarding the rule of "yield to the right" but I digress. B&E staff is great, knowledgeable, courteous and professional. I grabbed one of their pre-made chili packets and it was good. The dried beans and stuff allow you to cook fast, probably more salt than I like but, it tasted good. The lady & I went in there last week & Mauricio assisted us. I couldn't believe how friendly he was & just overall happy to help! I'd go there just for the customer service. We picked out steaks, bacon wrapped scallops, pepperoni, sausage, candied salmon, & so on. Of course their products are top of the line. We immediately cooked the steaks when we got home. There's a good reason B&E has a 5 star rating: amazing variety of high quality meats, reasonable prices, and friendly employees! We go to B&E frequently to stock up on meat. We're pretty picky about ground beef because it can be so gristly when you get it from your average grocery store; B&E is one of the only places we'll buy ground beef since they carry only the best. We also get their pre-made burgers every so often; they come in a couple different flavors, including cheddar bacon and bleu cheese. Both are fantastic with just the right amount of fat! B&E also has plenty of homemade sausages that are quite yummy and make great sausage sandwiches. If you're looking for a snack, pick up one of their landjägers (I recommend the spicy ones). They are so smoky and flavorful! Probably my favorite thing to get here, though, is their Cuban pork roast. It's a huge chunk of pork seasoned with tasty Cuban spices, and wrapped all up in banana leaves. When you roast this thing in the oven, it just falls apart. I have never had juicier pork! I love sticking it in a taco and topping it with some onion, tomatillo salsa, and queso fresco. YUM! B&E is definitely a place to add to your list of stores for your grocery needs! read more

Went here for the first time since my boyfriend lives down the street. I got the candied Salmon and my boyfriend got a bunch of jerky. The candied Salmon is extremely flavorful with just a touch of sweetness. And it doesn't have a fishy smell like some smoked Salmon. The jerky were all delicious as well. The only one I remembered eating was the peppered buffalo. When I first saw it, I thought it was going to be tough but it had the perfect texture. Not too moist, not too dry. Great Selection, Bad service. Went in not too long ago. Has been awhile do to the smart mouth dark haired kid who works in the Burien store. Dealt with different gentleman who seemed like he could be a manager. Great guy did a special order mix for me. Went in again and got the dark haired kid again and again he ran his mouth. I asked for the same mix again and he told me it would be a day or two and then a week or may not get to it at all. Wtf? If you don't want to do it just say so. I started to go to the Des Moines store because a coworker said she new the manager and it was a good store. Ok. I ordered my mix again. One guy who seem like he was in charge said I should just take iodine instead of earing liver. Again if you don't want to mix it for me just say so. Then another gentleman took down my number and said I would have to do at least 5lbs. I said fine, no problem. I have never heard from him. It's been a month. I guess I won't support local and go to Costco. 3 times with the punk kid and then no call from Des Moines store. I'll limit what I buy here. Preparing for our PAX trip to Boston, I was in search of some good quality landjäger and after I bought the Groupon, was delighted to learn that B&E had two varieties: regular and spicy. After sampling the spicy variety, I bought quite a few for our plane ride and hotel room. Noms! I didn't just buy the sausage, I splurged on some bacon for the weekend's brunch. After the nice butcher described all the varieties, I went with the country bacon (pork shoulder that was cured and smoked with alder and apple chips. I also bought some smoked salmon candy (whoa) and several pieces of their other jerky meats. I wish they were closer. It's quite a drive south for me but if I'm in the area, I will definitely pack a freezer bag in preparation so I CAN stop here and load up on quality items at a great price. Forget world peace, Obama winning...this year I discovered the Candy Smoked Salmon at B&E Meats. I've only been to the Des Moines location and let me tell you, invest in some Pink Gold. OMG, I went there yesterday for some stew meat and cow bones, and eyed some delicious looking cooked chicken on the back counter. It turns out that they smoke chickens on site on occasion. They let me taste it. It had been smoked only 2 hrs ago, still warm. I got one half to go for $6. It was insanely delicious! The skin was perfectly crispy and nicely seasoned (some bright orange seasoning), the inside was super juicy, tender and just wonderful. Sooo good. OMG. We ate it with salsa and tortillas but it could also go on a sandwich, of course. I can't wait to get more. It was a small chicken, which I prefer. If you want to get smoked chicken, I suggest that you call ahead and inquire since I'm not sure what's their smoking schedule. I also got beef jerky. It is delicious. Two words: Country Bacon. These guys carry a bacon cut from the shoulder instead of the belly. It's bacon's best kept secret and, ladies, less fat. But that doesn't detract from its deliciousness. The absolute best butcher in the Seattle area. Their selection is great, the people are awesome, and their product is always of excellent quality. Their prices are very good. If you like smoked salmon, I highly recommend trying the salmon candy. They also have pre-marinated meats like Kalbi steak and chicken, and the teriyaki tri-tip. This place is full-service, so if you need a cut of meat they don't have on hand, they'll slice it for you while you wait. There are not many places where you can get real prime steak in Seattle that's worth the price you pay... B&E's steaks are delectable in the truest sense of the word. Cuts are generous sized portions and the marbling is thorough and throughout. Other such tastes you can find behind the counter are kalbi ribs of the best sort, the BEST beef jerky EVER, and unique cuts. I love that I can pick up roasting marrow bones, beef tongue, and offal meats here. These are hard to find cuts now adays and I appreciate them having them at all. The boys behind the counter ken more than is expected from the average meat slinger, they can tell you exactly how to cook what your purchasing and how to handle it. When finally we were ready to order, Giovanni B (according to the receipt) took care of us. We get it that we weren't ready to order right away and added more items after he asked us "anything else?" But he could be more mindful to the customer assuming if it were their first time. I must say I was thoroughly impressed. I wanted to buy so many things that I had to just walk away. We bought both the regular and garlic bratwurst and they were awesome!
