I been in the Bay Area for 11 years, and for the first time since then I'm eating a REAL falafel rap, and a REAL Shawerma Rap. Most of the Mediterranean restaurants mix the Mediterranean kitchen standards with the American ones, and we get a horrible results!! For example they put Ketchup on falafel sandwich, or Avocado, or Mexican beans, or Mash potatoes as I tried these adds before in many places. I decided in the end to do my falafel at home rather than eating a shity Falafel, but what ever I make still it's not like what this restaurant makes !! He reminds me of the Jordanian falafel sandwiches, the way he makes it, the way he don't fill it to the max, and makes it easy and smooth to eat m, and enjoy eating it. Shawerma rap I told him to put Chicken, French fries, garlic spread, and pickles, and this is the way they make Shawarma at Jordan, and it's really good!! Since the chef and the owner from Jordan, I hope someday we will see on his menu Mansaf, or Mashawi dish like what we saw in Jordan. Not what I expected. Falafel is ok, shawarma is not even close to what a real shawarma sandwich is. Gyro is ok. Less than ok... if you want something close to Arabic, Lebanese, Greek this is close but nothing like the real authentic food. Affordable, great location & super fresh delicious food! I ordered the falafal wrap with fries and my friend ordered the chicken platter which came with rice, veggies, humus and pita bread. They have friendly service and make the food when you order it so my falafel was so fresh and flavorful. They have plenty of seating and there is 2 hour pay to park right outside. Their food tastes authentic and isn't overpriced like the fancy places (Opa). I would definitely come back again, but be sure you stay on top of parking- the city tickets really fast! I'm interested in trying their gyros or lamb when I return and somehow make room for their baklava... read more

Terrific casual middle eastern style halal restaurant. We were in town for the weekend and looking for something fast and casual but not a burger or something fried and YELP did us a solid w this place. Got there close to closing so the salads case was pretty empty but they accommodated us with two nice spicy lamb kebob plates w solid versions of babaganush and humus and a cucumber salad instead of rice. The lamb was perfectly cooked and plentiful! Great place. We will definitely return and they could open in Palo Alto / Menlo Park and we'd be a regular ! Plus, the wall art is a hoot. See pictures ! Discovered Babalou's right here on Yelp. :) Lucky me, they are located less than 5 minutes away and I've been there 3 days in a row for the chicken wrap. Factors that keep me coming back: taste, size and consistency. The wrap is about $8 but comes loaded with chicken and toppings. I like it with extra tomatoes and extra spicey... it does get quite messy, which is a positive! Haven't tried anything else on the menu... time to explore? BTW: uploaded a photo of their cool mural. For us Midwesterners (read: East Bay residents), this is pretty darned exotic fare. I like Mediterranean on Willow Pass in Concord the best, but this place is a close second. I had the Falafel Deluxe, which has the addition of roasted eggplant and potatoes. The eggplant was carmelized and quite tasty. I thought the falafel were really good: light and airy with a good crispy exterior. Sauce was good. Portion was huge--pretty good value for your money. I would go back! read more

Hands the Lamb Gyro is as good as one from New York and the fries are seasoned perfectly with salt and pepper. Really not sure why there isn't a line out the door for lunch. Mom and Pop business, with low-key at-home feel. Interior is basic, but it should be when the food is this good; money is in the food. Walnut Foodie people should be making this their local pit stop. Great local food and not over priced; perfect lunch spot! Also, has some nice classic cold take outs like humus, baba ghannouj, and baklava. Babalou's is a great alternative to the higher-end restaurants and run-of-the-mill diners that comprise the downtown WC restaurant scene. Walk in and mention (upon being asked) that it's your first time here, and the owner will generously offer you a sample of every salad and spread on display, all of which are very good. On my one visit I had the chicken kebab platter (one skewer of chicken on rice, with pita and two chosen sides for $10). The dish was nicely presented, and was generally good, but I was a little disappointed that the sides (which I had sampled up on entering) were better than the chicken itself, which was a little charred and dry. Still, it was a good meal, and I'll be back soon to try the lamb. read more

Lesson learned; when a place appears on Channel 9's (PBS) "Check Please Bay Area" do not go the week after the program first appears. Why? The line was very long; they were not prepared for the onslaught of devoted to the program and were out of lamb, baklava, and other staples of their menu. In fact the owner shut the door and closed an hour early. We were able to order; but, the backlog was an hour wait for the food. We felt for the owner and the staff because they were just not prepared for what happened. When the food arrived it was hot, served with a smile, and reasonably good. We will go back another time to experience this place again once the rush of fame is over. read more

I was planning a last minute dinner party and headed to Whole Foods when my boyfriend suggested going to get restaurant food instead, so I wouldn't have to cook. We has been past Babalou's many times but never went inside. So we stopped to see what they could offer us. We talked to a nice man behind the counter who walked us through their menu as well as their party trays. He was really helpful and did his best to get us on our way. I loved that he helped us compare prices of different options while trying to make sure we could feed all our guests. Everyone at the party was impressed with the food and asked us where we got it. Wifey and I enjoyed the place. A little hard to find parking as it is near the shopping area but we will go again if we are in Walnut Creek. Watch out for the fellow behind the cash register. He keeps saying\singing "anything else? " while you are placing your order. They have so many tasty things (the baklava is to die for, and I am a masculine man who does not use feminine phrases like "to die for") and it is easy to keep adding to your order and order too many items. read more

Sigh. i was truly disappointed with the food here... i ordered the lamb schwarma and wifey ordered the kefta kabob. both were meh. the lamb schwarma tasted like tuna salad...the meat had the texture like canned tuna. there was no substance...no flavor...it was mushy. i really felt like i was eating tuna...yeah, not very tasty. the tahini that was used reminded me of mayo...nothing worked in my schwarma whatsoever. boo. the kefta kabob was alright...there wasn't enough seasoning used in the kefta...it was pretty much just ground meat served in a lavash. nothing desirable. service was nice and friendly...the food was clean...but that's all that there was really going for this place. maybe it was a bad day? who knows...i won't risk it again though. read more

Legit mediterranean joint where they carve the meat in front of you the gentleman who was serving the food and cashiering did a great job at explaining the items to us (since all of them had foreign names with no description) and was very friendly The veggies were fresh and tart with the dressings that they tossed in Pita was dry Lamb - very juicy and flavorful * i totally would recommend it Hummus - tart and not as greasy as other places babaganoush - an eggplant based dip - was not too special in my opinion overall the food is certainly authentic and it is very friendly for vegetarians! read more

Craving Mediterranean food but did not want to go the pita hub route. We found this place on yelp and boy were we nicely surprised. The place isn't big and pretentious like many neighboring restaurants in this area. Prices are reasonable and the food was exactly what we wanted. There are a variety of items such as gyros and wraps on lavash. The falafel was amazing, nice and crispy with a flavorful inside. Definitely worth another trip back when we are in the area. read more

In no way am I a Mediterranean food expert. I just know what I like. And when it comes to Mediterranean, I love gyro and tzatziki sauce. There was no gyro offered at Babalou's unfortunately so we went for the lamb and chicken shawarmas. We got the "plate" which came with rice and 2 sides. The chicken was good but not great. Just not that much flavor. I'd give it 3 stars. But the lamb was very tasty. Not gamey at all and very tender. 4 stars. If you're debating between the 2, go for the lamb. The falafels were delish. I'd come back just for these. 5 stars. I'm always surprised to think that there is no meat in falafels and yet the carnivore that rages within me still finds them just as tasty and satisfying as meat. 2 big shawarma plates with rice and 2 sides each and some pita for about $25. Each plate was big enough for a smaller second meal, so it's a good deal. Service was friendly and efficient. I really liked the atmosphere here (on this particular night anyway--this was our 1st visit) and it made eating here fun. I gotta admit, I'd still rather have my gyro drenched in yogurt sauce but I would definitely recommend this place to others. And they have curbside delivery, for those of you who can't find parking for your to-go orders. read more

Wow what an a-hole is the guy who works there- so rude, he's abusive, and not in a fun way. I was the only person in the restaurant at 5:30 pm and had a few questions - uh oh... Within 2 seconds I knew this was going to be quite awkward. I pushed forward though and ordered the veggie plate, but wanted some protein so asked if I could order one kebab. Well those of you who have been there know the answer, a very ill-mannered, "we don't do that." So I thought, me neither, and I left the restaurant. How does this place stay in business? That guy must either be the owner hoping that an arson fire will let him claim the insurance, or the owner's cousin who the whole family complains about on the holidays. read more

This place is good in my book! The interior is very vibrant and fun, with hand-painted drawings of famous icons holding wraps. The music is festive, which set off the atmosphere with bustling energy, with or without a crowd. The owners were very helpful in placing our order. I settled for the classic falafel and thought it was amazing. I tried my roommate's lamb wrap and thought it was quite savory. In the end, we were STUFFED and couldn't bring ourselves to buy a piece of baklava. Next time, perhaps. :) read more

Its our first time here. I got the lamb shawerma combo with hummus & tabbouleh. My sister got the chicken kabab combo with greek salad & baba ghannouj. We got the food & dug in. The lamb was okay, it was cooked with tomato sauce? It was okay but I thought the lamb was jst gonna be grilled with onions for some reason cause ive been to other meditteran restaurants like this and thats how it was cooked....? Anywho, My sisters chicken tasted great. The sides were good too but nothing too crazy to rave about. The restaurant is cute. The mural on the wall was cool. What a glorious hole in the wall. We were craving some mediterranean food and decided to check out the places in our area and came upon this place with steller reviews. It turned out great and glad we tried it. The service was quick since we seem to be the first one in during the dinner rush and we had free roam to sit where ever we wanted. The food, I got the spicy mixed grill which came in a very generous serving size. It came with rice, mixed meats, lamb, beef and chicken I believe. It came with a small side salad and hummus with pita bread. The meat wasn't salty but had enough flavor that you wanted more. Rice was decent and the salad was fresh. I would come here again in a heart beat if I was in the area. read more

First time here, but not my last. I always try the dolmas and/or the baba ganoush at a new Mediterranean restaurant. The dolmas, here, relly nice; creamy rice, ever so slightly minty, and just the right amount of olive oil. Baba ganoush next tie! I had a fallafel wrap that was very well done. The food is good but shawarma sandwiches are only supposed to have the chicken, pickles,fries and garlic paste in them. I ordered mine this way (the authentic way) and it was really good. The people working here look like they hate their jobs, it wouldn't hurt you to smile more. Overall good food, not authentic but flavors are good. The music they play is nice and fitting. read more

Love this place! We visit Babalou's often and it's always delish! One of the best Mediterranean places in WC. It's more of a fast food style place so lunch or takeout is when we normally eat here. Their falafel wraps and kefta plates are my go to orders. The falafel is always crispy and hot and the kefta is flavorful and cooked well. I also really like their dolmas as a side dish. The guys that work here are very friendly and always provide great customer service. Will continue ordering from here. read more

I'm an easy going person, and I've never written a negative review. But this was so bad I was forced to. I've ordered to-go frequently. And EVERY time, the order is either wrong or sauces and dressings are missing. It happens so often that I wonder if it's done by the manager to save money? Worst of all, when I call to complain, the manager (a bald middle aged man who never even smiles) accuses me of losing it, never even apologizes! The last time he actually YELLED at me on the phone and called me rude and cheap. Sorry, he's the rude and cheap one. I had them cater my daughter's graduation party, and this is how their loyal customers are treated?? Never again will I give them my business. read more

The first time I was here, this place was spot on -- food was good, service was good, and I thought I'd found my new spot. This time, we ordered, they messed up our order, and they were rude. (Different staff) Additionally, we had asked for lemon, to which the cashier/hostess person immediately said "no." Not even giving it a thought. How rude. They also messed up our order (my boyfriend was too nice to say that we didn't want it, and wanted it original order), but they didn't seem to care much. Will I come back? One of my go to lunch spots that never lets me down. Love there combo plate and don't forget to make it spicy! Very friendly and always know what I want to order! When I walked in I was amazed with how beautifully the art was displayed all around the restaurant. It gave off a very nice vibe and it was really nice to look at while eating my food. The price for the combat plate was about 11 dollars which is reasonable until I noticed how small portions they serve, so it was a little disappointing. I also ordered a side of falafels and fries which all turned out to be delicious. The food is served fresh and HOT. The only issue I had eating here was that it very hot in here... I don't know if the air conditioner was not working. Overall a good place to eat!!! read more
