This is a fun place. The chicken fried steak was a little rubbery and hard to eat, but the mashed potatoes were really good and the biscuits were fresh. Next time I will try the chicken tenders. The music was amazing and once in a while you'll get one of the servers singing. If you've never been there, just know that you have a few chicken choices as a main entrée, and then all of the sides get brought to share. Corn, mashed potatoes, green beans and gravy for the chicken fried steak. They also bring an already mixed salad for the table as well. We hadn't been to Babes in 4 or 5 years. It's still as good as always. The chicken is great and the sides were delicious. We especially liked the mashed potatoes and gravy. The ambiance is terrific with a family friendly, casual dining area and good country music with the occasional live performance on the mic. We had chicken-fried steak and fried chicken, with all the bottomless sides (biscuits, salad, green beans, mashed potatoes, gravy, and corn). Only reason it's not 4 stars is that there have been a couple of times when they were supposed to be open but weren't for some reason. Okay, so what can you NOT like about Babe's It is the pick of two of the families 10 members who get to pick their Birthday dinner location. We all like the food, the service, the next door Oak Street Pie Shop, and it is always an enjoyable outing. We will be back at least twice a year :-) I have picked up to go orders from the Sanger facility but we otherwise always to go Roanoke. Oh yaaaaasss- now THIS is how family-style is done! I haven't been through Sanger in a good two-decades...had no idea that Babe's even existed! It has been a good long time since I've eaten at a true family-style restaurant. We arrived at Babe's mid-afternoon on a Saturday...it was surprisingly busy at 3pm...I guess Sanger is still hopping! The restaurant was originally a tractor and equipment supply store that has been converted into a restaurant. They have quite the interesting decor including rustic wagon-wheel light fixtures and stuffed chickens overlooking your table. The antique cooler at the back of the restaurant was quite awesome to see! Nice to see food that isn't frozen! Our waitress was delightful...no menus but an option of 1. Fried chicken 2. Smoked chicken 3. Chicken strips 4. Catfish or 5. Chicken fried steak. Our table ordered chicken strips, catfish and I had the CFS. All options were most excellent! Wow! Sides are served family style and include green beans, corn, AMAZING biscuits, salad, mashed potatoes and of course, gravy! Did I mention it is all-you-can-eat for the side!?!? Yaaaassss! The food was impeccable. Each dish was prepared perfectly. The creamed corn was nicely done without being too sweet. Green beans were blackened and the flavors absolutely danced on the palate! The biscuits were OUT-OF-THIS-WORLD! Salad was simply lettuce with a white-wine vinegar and sugar dressing which proved delicious. Mashed potatoes were on-spot. I'm not a huge fan of gravy but no complaints from me! Meats? DELICIOUS!!! We were too stuffed to have dessert at the table...we all ordered a dessert to-go. We split a banana pudding....only mistake was splitting...I could have easily eaten two puddings by myself! I HIGHLY recommend the short drive from Denton to try Babe's...it's worth every mile! Our party of 3 arrived here later on Friday evening when there was no wait list or line & got seated immediately, very near the checkout stand so every thing started off great...quickly went downhill from there. Parties of 5 & 7 people came in after us, both got seated quickly too. Both of them ordered after us & received food long before us. Once our food did arrive, I'm sure the flavor was great but we didn't get to enjoy that because it was straight cold, not even luke-warm but straight cold! Not one single time did anyone refill of our tea & when I asked for a to-go tea our server replied they don't do to-go drinks there. Very unfortunate that I paid so much for a single glass of tea when much more than one glass was needed to wash down cold & salty food. Everyone had plenty of time to sing & dance when needed but no one person could refill a drink. Food was not to an enjoyable point of us even thinking about refills on it. Another unique restaurant find thanks to yelp! This is definitely a very interesting one (to say the least)! We're driving by for a late lunch and I'm impressed at the 4.5 stars rating. I had to check this one out. This is tucked in a old small town and it feels like you're out on cowboy country. It's not hard to find this place at all as that giant chicken statue stands out big by the front door entrance. We got in and was immediately seated by a server. Here's the thing: they do NOT have a menu. Our server rattled on and told us what they have and seems to be in a hurry. I have to say, as a newcomer, I don't like being rushed AT ALL. And she knew it was our first time. She seemed very impatient as we asked her to repeat what she's saying. I eventually ordered 2 adult meals (1 fried chicken meal and 1 chicken tenders meal). The server also have us add a veggie plate (we thought this came with the meals but it's a hefty $8.99 when the bill came). Each of the adult meal is worth $14.99. I do NOT like the fact that we don't know how much each meal costs until we got the bill. The fried chicken meal comes with 4 chicken pieces and there's 7 chicken tenders. The tenders were very tender so I'm rating that 5 stars. The fried chicken is also crispy on the outside and meat is tender. Flavor-wise, nothing jumps out as special. I've had way better ones elsewhere. As for the side veggies, the corn, green beans, mashed potatoes, and gravy tasted like they're pre-packaged. They're good but nothing stellar about it. Overall, it's a pretty unique experience. We took lots of photos outside as it's seriously good for photo ops. We've been a fan of Babe's since going to the original one in Keller. And, I'm telling you because it really is great, comfort food. I'm talking about the kind of place that inspires legends while challenging your pant buttons. Which is why I have to limit my Babe's experience to once a year... My hubby and I held out for as long as we could but the craving finally pushed us over the edge. We headed to Sanger and arrived at around 1130, walked right in which is surprising because usually there is a wait. After church service lets out, there definitely a wait. No hesitation was given as we were seated and our perky little waitress promptly took our drink order. Oh, sweet tea, I had missed you. We ordered the fried chicken for 2 and as we waited for our meal, we were given that simple salad of apple cider vinegar and oil - the one thing my doctor would probably approve of. As our chicken came floating back to us, we quickly made room in the middle of the table for the platter and side dishes. Country style green beans = plenty of butter, S&P, bacon and dare I say bacon grease. The creamed corn was also very tasty and loaded with butter and S&P. I tried to avoid the mashed potatoes and cream gravy but no. I had to have a bite! As I tried, and failed, to finish my chicken breast with whole jalapenos on the side I couldn't stop. This was the point when my food hoarder instincts kicked in and I regretted not bringing Tupperware to bring home some sides. Sure, the chicken can be stuck in a plastic bag AND don't forget those homemade biscuits but my green beans and corn did not make it home. Until next time, Babe's... you have my fried chicken heart.
