Visited on a Sunday evening and left super disappointed. Our family of 5 ordered two daily specials and three kid meals around 7pm and didn't get our food until 7:36pm. The restaurant wasn't overly busy (more than half the tables weren't being taken but every single free one was covered with trash and sticky). We had to ask to have a table cleaned off so our kids could sit. Even after waiting for so long, and asking twice, the kids meals were super lackluster. Overall the food is pretty good but they are very understaffed. The employees are nice and helpful but too short handed. Also, I have never seen a manager for owner any time I've been there. Today I went in with my family for lunch and they had a bad leak from one of the AC vents on the ceiling. They had a wet floor sign in the middle of a puddle of water. Several customers slipped but fortunately no one fell. I helped and elderly man walk past the puddle at one point. After about 20 mins an employee place a bucket near the leak but it was still hitting the floor. They never made an attempt to mop or dry the puddle simply placed a bucket and continued to walk past it. The restrooms wreak of sewage and these are 10 feet away from where the food is being made. The burger came out burnt along and 1/4 into the edges of the patty and the top bun was burnt to the point that it had to be pulled off. There was packed house as a party of 20 came in right behind us so, I dissected what was salvageable to eat. We were told we would have to pay $.50 more for an extra dipping sauce for our fried jalapeño rings when we ran short. We paid $27 for one hamburger, an order of onion rings, an order of jalapeño rings and two drinks. I think they could've afforded to give us one more small portion of ranch dipping sauce. I ordered the Babes salad and enjoyed the sautéed veggies in it. Kids had nuggets, a burger, and both came with fries. LOVED that those were a $10 value for FREE. Hubbae (and I) liked the kids burger. I'd get my own when I come back. We took food home and the kids ate the rest for lunch. I will forever associate Babe's Old-Fashioned Food with feelings of desperation and hypoglycemia brought on by hunger. While I was in grad school, Babe's was my go-to joint for a greasy, belt-busting chili cheeseburger. Nothing hit the spot better after a three-hour lecture on descriptive, correlational, quasi-experimental, and experimental research designs. A few weeks ago, Babe's came to the rescue again; I had worked late that evening and needed a rib-sticking meal chock full of carbohydrates, cheese, grease, and dead animal protein. I walked out with a distended belly full of noxious gas, but I felt satisfied. The burgers are nowhere near the best in San Antonio, but they sure do scratch an itch late at night. The online menu promises the following: "Our restaurant serves always fresh, never frozen American - style dishes. We prepare your meal from the finest ingredients sourced from all around the world." Let me put on my "They Live" sunglasses and reveal to you the hidden reality in that statement: "Our restaurant serves frozen, preformed products, several of them containing preservatives such as monocalcium phosphates. We heat and assemble your meal from low-cost items sourced from a Sysco food truck. OBEY. MARRY AND REPRODUCE. NO INDEPENDENT THOUGHT." Perhaps I took a few liberties with that translation, but I'm not far off; the burger patties are undoubtedly frozen and the buns come from a factory. I know, for I am an illuminated food snob...and because I often see the Sysco truck delivering its goods. Okay, so the burgers aren't made from fresh, locally raised Akaushi beef, but are they any good? Surprisingly, yes! My double bacon cheeseburger included two juicy, well-seasoned, hard-seared 1/4-pound patties. The beef -- frozen though it was -- tasted just as good, if not better, than the pretentious Kobe/foie gras burger patty I'd sampled only a few days earlier. The bacon was crisp, the veggies were fresh, and the bun held its own against the juices. I've had better hard-seared burgers at Bobby J.'s and Chris Madrid's, but make no mistake: Babe's puts out a damn fine -- albeit greasy (it wouldn't be "old-fashioned" without the grease) -- double bacon cheeseburger. A side of fried pickled jalapeno rings hit the spot, too, with a shatteringly crisp batter and plenty of heat from the veins and seeds. The combination of heat from the peppers, vinegar from the brine, and crunch from the batter had me reaching for more. Pro tip: toss a few rings on top of your burger for extra flavor and texture. Alas, Babe's stumbled with a side of factory-made ranch dressing. Ranch dressing should strike a balance between tanginess and sweetness. It should be creamy and herbaceous with just a hint of vinegar to cut the richness from the eggs and cream. One taste of Babe's ranch gave it away as factory produced; it was slimy (indicative of artificial emulsifiers) and overwhelmingly savory (a sign of chemical flavoring agents such as MSG, disodium inosinate, and disodium guanylate). The jalapenos are great on their own, so just skip the dressing. In my sardonic introduction, I implied that Babe's is good only for a late-night fix, but that's unfair; it's just good, period. The burgers at Bobby J.'s down the street are better, but Babe's is a worthy alternative. Four stars might seem overly generous, but I rate a place on its own merits, not how it compares to a much more expensive experience. You might think a 3.5-star rating would be more appropriate, but to quote Dieter from "Sprockets," "Sadly, there are no integers on this scale, so your gangly adolescent attempt to be clever has proved futile." So I came to this restaurant on my Lunch break. All I got was a bacon burger and a drink with fries. My total was only 14.82 and some changes and was charged almost 20 dollars for my food. The manager there wasn't willing to give me my money back because he said I should have looked at the charge before I swiped my card. This place definitely isn't that good to pay for a 20 dollar burger. Point of the story, my bank said that the original charge was only 14.82, and that they added a tip on my ticket for 5 dollars. Basically they stole my money and forged a tip on my receipt. Will not be going there again and I did file a dispute to have the charge removed anyways. But yeah be careful about checking how much they charge you because if they are writing tips on receipts, it's probably not the first time this has happened to someone without them even knowing or checking. read more
