My boss, originally from the DC office before opening up the Miami one, brought me here when he went to bring back traditional seasonings. I would have to thank him for introducing me to Babylon Market! Located in the back entrance of a strip mall in Falls Church, Babylon Market is essentially a bodega where you can find halal meat, sweets, prepackaged foods, seasonings as well as artisanry (tapestries & decor). Said, the owner, runs the shop himself and is a really pleasant person. He remembered my boss from prior visits and took time to go over the different foods with me, even helping to pack them for flight. I'm certainly glad to have found this market. read more

This is like the little Iraqi grocery store the could! Its a little hard to find, located in the back of a plaza off of Route 7 (hence why i took a pic of the sign where you turn into the plaza) but once you go in, take a slow walkabout-- its a small shop with shelves teeming with goodies, spices, Shan masalas, anything you need to make an arabic dessert, SO MANY kinds of nuts, An amazing freezer area with hard to find goods like IRAQI kabob, moulekiya (sp?) and soujek. They also have prayer rugs, tea sets and other household items. I will say, when I went through the spice area, I was really struck by how Iraqi cuisine is so different from the Levant and Egypt- there were lots of ingredients you would use in Persian cuisine and Indian cuisine. Tucked away on the back side of a sleepy little strip mall, you would miss this little Iraqi grocery store if you blinked while passing it on Falls Church Route 7. And that's really too bad, because you would also miss the wide variety of hard to find Middle Eastern food items and household goods burgeoning from the packed-to-the-gills shelves, freezers and cases carried by this store's owner and operator! Walking through the store, you'll find diversely stocked shelves with so many things to choose from. Fresh baqlawa, ma'amoul, kutaifa pastry for k'naffe? Check! Four kinds of frozen kibbeh, falafel, or bamiyeh? Sure thing! A dangling blue eye to protect your car or home from the 'ain?? Indeed! Fool and hummus and qashta in a can? You bet! Chocolates and fizzy drinks sweetened with real sugar and not foul fructose corn syrup? Yes! Halal meat from the onsite butcher? Aywa!! Even tea glasses and soap from across the pond. This little place has a little bit of everything! The owner is very friendly and helpful, always smiling at us from behind the counter. A great place to get all your Iraqi groceries. Very cheap and has lots of good stuff. I got a big bag of tea, a set of six tea glasses with saucers, and a pack of fresh dates, all for $28. (One word of warning: make sure you check over any glassware carefully before buying since some of it is cracked. I deducted a star from my rating for that.) The place has a wonderful aroma to it. In the back, they have a butcher's section, which I haven't tried yet but looks fantastic. Don't be deterred by how hard this place is to find. It's in the shopping center right beside the W+OD trail overpass on Route 7. There's a tiny little sign out front for Babylon Market. Go around the back of the shopping center and you'll find the place (plus plenty of parking) with no problem. read more

We recently moved to the area and we visited this Arabic store in Falls Church. They carried many authentic goods and grocery items and I found them to be reasonably priced. Owner is very friendly and helpful and I like that they keep the store clean, not over packed and it was not so busy with shoppers at least during the times I have been there. "One hundred percent. This is kashk. One hundred percent." This is what the shopkeeper at Babylon Market assured me of when I visited the Falls Church specialty grocer one Saturday morning on a desperate search for kashk. It certainly didn't help that I had no idea what kashk looked like or tasted like. All I had to go on was pictures of jars of kashk that I had found on the internet. Admittedly, I was a bit skeptical since the internet pictures were jars and the shopkeeper directed me towards boxes that looked like silken tofu. One of the hidden bonuses of maintaining a healthy food blog (doctorchrisko.blogspot.com) is it forces me to search out new and exotic ingredients. I recently ate at a Persian restaurant and tasted some of the best eggplant I have ever had. I looked up "Persian eggplant recipe" and found several recipes which included this mysterious ingredient called kashk. After some research, I learned that kashk is a dairy product made from drained, dried yogurt. After fruitlessly searching for kashk at our local grocery chain, I almost decided to substitute with plain yogurt or sour cream as some recipes suggested. Then I remembered this small Middle Eastern market hidden in the back of a shopping plaza in Falls Church. I figured a place called Babylon Market just might have the elusive ingredient. It turned out that I was right. In fact, I was one hundred percent right. Heeding the advice of the owner, I picked up the box of kashk and headed home. I opened up the box and indeed found a dried ball of kashk sitting in a pool of cloudy liquid resembling the whey found in a carton of yogurt. So we've been shopping here for 6 years. The owner is one of the nicest people we've met, a really decent guy. He will make you feel more than welcome. The groceries they have are Iraqi which you can't get anywhere else. The store is clean and we never had a problem with not finding what we want. The only reason I'm giving the shop 4 stars is because of the prices, the stuff here are pretty expensive. I do recommend Babylon if you have no problem with the high proces. read more

Very expensive, items are almost expired, it is very obvious when you look inside the freezer you will see how old they are. the quality is very low Got many things from there, most of them were crab I would never come back again, this place may be specialized in Iraqi and middle eastern groceries, but the quality and the prices are the worst. I would look for another place for sure. But honestly, the owner is very friendly, but not honest, he just want to sell his items without thinking of making loyal customers. read more

Look for the cookies shaped like a fat S covered with sesame seeds -- great with coffee in the morning. They are made by a bakery in NJ and sold in clamshells. Not too sweet -- perfect cookies! read more

Babylon Market is an Middle Eastern ethnic grocery store with Iraqi focus. The cleanliness of the store is actually pretty decent compared to Madina Market and other stores of this nature but the selection tends to be pretty limited. I usually come here for that legendary Iraqi bread which is done superbly. Other items in Babylon market are good but just beware of some of the canned and jarred items as some of them might be expired. I would completely stay away from the frozen section too. The assortment of spices and herbs are amazing and inexpensive - they also have ready-made spice mixtures and rubs for traditional Iraqi dishes like Kibbeh, Bamia, Biryani, and such. The location is a little on the obscure side and looks like one of those places where someone would come to get whacked by the mob. It's not actually just off the Leesburg Pike, it's actually BEHIND the plaza which some people might find hard to find. But no worries, it's it has the company of some other ethnic gems like an Indian grocery and such. read more

I called a lot of halal markets to get a turkey for thanksgiving. Many of them told me to come in the next day and that one would be ready. All of them lied except this store. The owner was super nice and worked with me on short notice. He really saved thanksgiving for me and my family. I recommend calling ahead and talk with the owner if you are in a similar situation.
