    Chicken Shwarma Sandwich
    Jay D.

Recently went to Babylon for my very first time. I was pleasantly surprised by how good the majority of the food we had was. For appetizers, we tried the homemade Hummus (which happened to be the very best I have EVER had), and the Baba Ganoush. This was my first time ever having that, and it was good. Also tried the meat stuffed grape leaves--excellent. I tried the Chicken Shawarma sandwich. This was very good. I really liked the garlic sauce that came on it, it had a great strong flavor, which I appreciated. Wish it would have came with french fries on the side covered in that stuff! After seeing my friends' Moussaka, I really want to try that next time I go. They swore by it and spoke extremely highly about it. The only thing I was ambivalent on was the cashew baklava. I found it very dry and tasteless, for my personal preference. I would not order that again, unfortunately--but again, that was a personal preference. Service wise, it was phenomenal. We loved our servers, and you can tell that they take pride in their food. We found the restaurant very clean, and can tell they take pride in that, too.

Salad with feta cheese, spinach lentil soup, pita

Neither of us wanted to cook this night, so we drove over to Babylon, where the server could not have been nicer. I got the lentil soup (delicious), the salad (good!), and the moussaka (enormous). My hubby got one of the platters. We will definitely come back the next time we don't want to cook! Gender-specific restrooms. Private parking lot.

Definitely one of the better restaurants in the Homestead area. The food is fairly simple but homey and reasonably high quality. Possibly a bit pricey depending on what you get. I got to try the plain yogurt and the gyro. I think the yogurt is homemade. Certainly seems that way. It's a little chunky, but I actually enjoyed the authentic yogurt and nice balance of creaminess and saltiness this had. Very good authentic yogurt. The gyro was pretty good as well. The wrapping was kind of subpar, but the meat was well made and the vegetables seemed to be fresh. Pretty okay sauce as well. It's definitely not the best gyro I've had in Pittsburgh, but it's not bad either. All in all, if you're looking for a good late night stop in homestead, this is a great option. Nice Mediterranean food served here.

Could I get another star, please?? This magical food experience is the real deal, and an absolutely charming family from Iraq is behind it. Ignore the absolutely abysmal exterior (think old Pittsburgh bar) and the not-so-charming interior --- it won't matter one whit when you've tried the food. Heck, just conversing with the family - an adorable, spunky younger sister and two older brothers - is entertaining enough - especially the sister. She's a hoot. Just do yourself a favor & GO. The absolute must-have's: hummus (SO creamy and flavorful; some of the best I've ever had), baba ghanoush (WOAH - smooth, smoky and excellent flavor - BEST I've ever had); and the chicken shawarma sandwich -- INCREDIBLE! It was pressed like a panini and was just over-the-top flavorful. Easily the best I've had - and DC (where I used to live) has some good Iraqi food! Just wow. I had a falafel sandwich (rolled in pita - per usual) - and it was tasty, but that shawarma is unbeatable. We took home 2 dishes I wanted to try, and I just tried them for dinner. Sooo tasty. First - mujaddara: tender dark lentils with caramelized onions. Second: musabaha: chickpeas with fresh diced tomatoes, onions, tahini sauce - YUM! We wanted a spinach feta pie but weren't sure how well it would travel. No matter - we WILL be back. I can't wait. They're closed on Sundays and have specials throughout the week. This place is *very* special. Just try it!

This was an amazing find via Yelp while shopping in the area. Don't be taken aback by bar scene when you walk in. The staff are super friendly. Everything we ordered was fantastic. The musabaha is a must try. I wish we hadn't jumped in and started eating it before we took the picture. It was so good.

Rice combo with baba ghanouj, hummus and pita, chicken shawarma sandwich with extra garlic sauce, and spinach feta pie
    Morgan M.

TLDR; The sauces were unmatched, the shawarma is to die for (I love it in sandwich form), try the spinach feta pie, and the restaurant feels like such a typical local bar but is SO MUCH MORE! The hospitality is outstanding and so was the food! Please don't go by what my photo looks like of the food! We always had started eating when we took it, and I dropped the rice It still looked delicious and tasted even better!! The chicken shawarma sandwich was sooooo flavorful, the chicken was juicy; I recommend getting extra garlic sauce to slather on there! We got the combo plate with rice, hummus, and baba ghanouj, served with the pita! The baba ghanouj was smoky and creamy but that hummus was some of the best I ever had. We also got the spinach and feta pie, also outstanding, especially dipped in all those delightful spreads! I would've gone back to the restaurant for the people! A guy I talked to at the bar area and he was so kind to us! He brought me extra spreads to try which I thought was so nice of him!! He made sure to tell me he loves their hummus. They treated us like friends and after a long day, we appreciated the loveliness of the people! Amazing hospitality and food- I would 100% go back!

Chicken and rice platter with salad and hummus. Delicious.

The food is delicious and the waiter was extremely nice. Will return soon. Authentic middle eastern. Total gem.

Decent selection of drinks and fun people to meet.

We showed up for a Saturday lunch ahead of a snow storm, and the overall experience was good. The staff were friendly. There were clearly some number of regulars around. The space is a bit old and drafty, but that just adds a level of character. In terms of the food, we ordered a few salads and a half reuben (part of the lunch special), plus an Italian flatbread. Nothing was exceptional, but everything was nicely prepared and presented. The vegetables in the salad were fresh and crisp. The flatbread was good but not particularly noteworthy. My partner liked the rueben, but thought it could use a little more sauerkraut. The Guinness was fresh and nicely poured. All told, this was a good experience. The bar's space was renovated to transport customers to the secrecy of the Prohibition era. Through OpenTable, I made a reservation for my husband and me. We entered the building through a side entrance on Amity Street, checked in with an employee at a desk, and then waited for another employee to walk us to the 100-year-old elevator (it still works!). On the fourth floor, we saw old bank items such as safety deposit boxes and mechanical check printers. We pushed a button to turn a clock handle to a certain time, and then a hidden door opened. We entered the bar, and two bartenders, Ryan and Robbie, greeted us. The menu listed vodkas, gins, tequilas, mezcals, liquors, bourbons, ryes, rums, seasonal drinks, and mocktails. Food could be ordered from the Puerto Rican restaurant Secretos De Mis Abuelos that is located elsewhere in the building. The bar consisted of a few rooms, each of which had glamorous interior design such as antique furniture, wallpaper with bold patterns, paintings, and dimly lit lamps. Beyond the bar was the Library, which had shelves of books and an old radio. The bartenders patiently repeated to us that we should pull a certain book to open another secret door that would lead us to the Red Room. We finally figured out which book to pull, and we walked down stairs to a parlor with rich, red hues, plush seating, and (at least at that time) a more private, quiet setting. I ordered the French martini (vodka, Chambord, pineapple juice, raspberry vanilla shrub, and raspberries) and the Painkiller (spiced rum, coconut rum and cream, pineapple juice, orange juice, and nutmeg), and I rate them both as 5 stars. Each of those drinks cost $13 plus tax, credit-card fee, and tip.
