Both pasta dishes were salty. It was no big deal: we were prepared to pay the bill in full because they were already cheap and just chalked up our experience to bad luck with a salty batch of pasta water. We quietly asked for the bill and one of the owners inquired if there was any problem as we had left over full plates. We said the eggplant in one of the dishes was delicious and the sauce was fine, but just couldn't handle the saltiness of the pasta and not to worry about it.
Owner had the decency to remove one of the dishes from the bill, although we insisted we didn't need anything adjusted. I was pleasantly surprised by the gesture and had no expectation for it.
The night prior we had the most delicious spaghetti at Osteria Mocenigo and can assure you the issue is not with our tastebud, as one of the owners suggested to another customer as we began to exit. Why he was talking about us as though we were deaf, I can only assume he was exhibiting defensiveness and insecurity. We did not create a scene when answering the owner's question, so there was no justification for his pettiness and unprofessionalism. Dare I say he was being "salty" about my lack of enthusiasm for his cooking?
Go with Osteria Mocenigo all the way!
**Update: The issue is not with the meal; it's with your comment that referenced our ethnicity which I left out in the original review in order to omit the provocative nature of racism. I heard the female staff refer to our ethnicity in Italian at the counter several times which took me aback. It was jarring to hear, but we didn't engage and left a 14% tip as a gesture of appreciation.
When my mother heard you referencing our ethnicity again to the other patron as she gathered her belongings (I was already waiting for her outside), she gently interjected that we've lived in the US for over 40 years and have Americanized tastes so to please not use our ethnicity as the reason. Furthermore, she said taste is subjective so it's fine if some like saltiness and others don't.
I stepped back in when I saw through the window that she was speaking to you, fearing that an outburst had arisen. Instead, normal tones of voices were being used and being ignorant of what had transpired (i.e., another reference to our ethnicity in English to the neighboring patron) I assured you with a smile that I had a lovely experience and you kindly offered your hand to shake.
I enjoyed the eggplant starter and the eggplant portion of the pasta. I tried a few bites of the pasta in each dish to verify what I was tasting. We noticed the table to my right had finished their dish and figured we were the odd men out, but a shrug and "oh well"; as I said, taste is subjective.
We did finish the starter and drank the majority of our wine, so please do not state that we are making unfounded judgments. However, this review is not in judgment of the food but in your lack of consideration when you talked about our ethnicity just behind my mother as though she can be reduced to just that and be spoken of as though she wasn't there.
Feel free to think about the injury to one's dignity that you inflict when you do this--especially in their very presence--and apologize, and I will gladly remove this review. This review was left to make you think about your action and warn others that disparagement is unofficially on the menu and one may become an unwitting target of it.
As I said, we assured the female staff that there was no problem and we did not demand reparation and insisted all of this with a smile and apologetic expression. We just didn't want to take the leftovers to go.
When my mother recounted your exchange with another customer, I was shocked. If only she had promptly followed me out and had not overheard you mentioning our ethnicity, all of this could have been avoided and we would have been none the wiser about your unjust attitude. But it's not her fault that you behaved this way.
Take ethnicity out of it; it's in poor taste to talk about others in their presence. Please do not treat people this way. Hope you learn from this and a generous spirit towards your fellow man develops. Thank you. read more
