Had a great experience here on a Sunday afternoon. The bartender was excellent, allowed us to try any beers that we wanted and kept our drinks full the whole time we were there. We ate some delicious food- the wings are awesome and we had a goat cheese salad that was great. We also ordered the Ludwig pizza; while it was good, the description could've been a little better- it had this sweet brown sauce on it that was a little too much, but it didn't keep us from eating it. Our server was incredible and I hope to find her working at a new establishment worthy of her professional demeanor.** As alumni of the University, my friends and I visit often. We most look forward to our departing brunch. This past Sunday we chose Bacchus. Huge mistake. We arrived when the restaurant opened and were their first table, a party of 6. Our server was friendly and a pro. We put in our food order, a mix of breakfast and lunch items. My friend and I decided on the omelet. We both requested they be made with egg whites only. After a few minutes, our waitress told us that the chef would NOT make our order with egg whites. Odd, as NOWHERE on the menu does it state "no substitutions". Confused, we asked our waitress to clarify: were the eggs pre-made? were they egg beaters? were they not able to separate egg from yolk? She left to express our concerns to the chef. She returned with a very apologetic, but firm "I'm sorry, but our chef will NOT make egg whites." We bit our tongues and took our meals as they were made. We were a large group and everyone was too famished to wait somewhere else. Let it be known that this is the final time I will ever step foot in there. It is pretty shameful that someone would have such an ego for their craft, when their food is sub-par, at best. Dining out is my favorite thing to do. I have such respect for an industry I was once a part of. This behavior was nothing short of gross. I hope that hungry, paying customers take their business elsewhere. Really great food, and the longest beer list I've ever seen!! If you go, you have to try their sweet potato fries (it's all about the dipping sauce). The inside is nice exposed brick with fun decorations, but I'm also a big fan of their enclosed outdoor dining when it's warm enough. read more

Absolutely awful! I haven't been here in years because of the last experience I had. tonight went with someone for dinner wanting to give this place another try after years. that was a mistake. I ordered the nasty nachos. Aptly titled. when they arrive at the table first they were cold, at best room temperature. they had so much cheese on the top it was as if someone set a block of cheese on top of them and melted it one big congealed mess. I picked through them trying to salvageable pieces.... the worst part of all this? 85% of the tortilla chips had it not a thing on them. I basically paid $9.95 for a bag of tortilla chips I could have got the gas station for 3 bucks. the waitress was nice enough and attentive.... that aside I will never ever go to this place again!! read more

I think I had pulled pork sandwich. It was fine. The fries were okay too. But this review is not about the food. The beer selection is absolutely amazing. They have over 400 bottles, including a small selection of aged barleywines. They also have a rotating collection of beers on tap, including a nitro line. The day I was there they had North Coast Old Rasputin on nitro for around $8 a pint. It was everything I hoped it would be. Staff is okay. Server was nice, but was much less knowledgeable on beer than you would expect to find at a restaurant with over 400 bottles and a nitro tap. read more

Bacchus has a Great salad bar for dinner. Homemade salads and dressings fresh vegetables ALWAYS crisp. Dinner portions are not that much but flavor is always good. I would have given the restaurant 5 stars but think it has gone down hill "Dinner" over the past several years. I have never hung out downstairs in the bar area. I usually go upstairs for dinner. Food is good wish the portion sizes were a bit bigger. Nice atmosphere waiters and waitresses are always very nice. read more

Went in the late afternoon as a couple, sat at the bar and had 2 beers from the very large list. Service was not great, bartender seemed irritated we were there and unfriendly, chatted with a friend or another server (not sure which) the whole time. We were very surprised at how dirty the glasses were. I would expect a beer bar with 500 beers, many of them quite expensive, to have spotless glasses to pour them into. My beer immediately fizzled out because of the streaky glass. 2 beers + tip = $30. Meh. read more

This place gets 2 stars because they have alcohol and offer a gluten free pizza. However, if you want more booze in your cup, you have to wait on, quite possibly, the WORST bartender I have ever had the displeasure of relaying on. Also, their gluten free pizza crust really stinks. Guess it's a cheap date for whoever is paying since they don't give u the option of ordering more of ANYTHING. This Restaurant/bar is very neat. They have all kinds of stuff like pool table tennis and games to play. There is always something to do at Bacchus including live music and other activities. The food is on point and they serve it almost throughout the whole night. Even if i'm not too hungry I will get some fries just because their the perfect snack to munch on whether it's 2 pm or at midnight. The burgers are also delicious and you can tell they put a lot of effort into their food. I have never had a bad experience at Bacchus and I go here a lot. I mainly come here to play pool and hangout with friends. I believe this to be the only pool hall in New Paltz and yes it's not cheap to play but worth it to me just to have a good time. The pool is generally 5 bucks an hour per person. They also have your generic tables that u can pay a dollar per game at. Sometimes what I do is play a game or two on the cheap table to get warmed up and then move on to the bigger and better 5 dollar tables. If your not coming for pool and want to just hangout I would still highly recommenced to give it a try. The Music is always good and the Narragansett flows like a golden river. read more

This place is my favourite bar in new paltz. They have over 9000 beers to chose from that you can get drunk on and amazing food that pairs well with beer. It also has that distinctive new paltz vibe. The burgers were great, the staff was friendly and funny, the pool hall was a lot of fun, and the sweet potato fries were the best I've had! Fantastic beer selection too! It would have been 5 stars, but for the distractingly bad "art" on display in the pool hall. It's the sort of garbage that mistakes being disgusting for being transgressive, and being egotistical for being empowered. To the owner, I assure you that your customers do not want to see used waxing pads and bloody tampons while they eat, and god only knows what possessed you to let a selfie-taking quarter-educated stereotype of an untalented art student put pictures of her personal hygiene routine on your walls. It is gross, completely hollow, self-aggrandizing garbage. We get it, "artist," you have bodily functions. So does literally everyone else. No one wants to see them in a place where food is served. This is my absolute favorite restaurant in New Paltz. They have not only an extensive beer list, but many different food option to choose from. My favorite would have to be the pulled pork sandwich! The menu here looked so appealing, and so did the prices. But I guess you get what you pay for. I had a salad with grilled tuna, but it just wasn't that good, except for the avocado, and I couldn't finish that cream of mushroom soup. Ugh. This place deserve 3 stars but the waitress was so on point I threw in another star. The server was fantastic, she was polite, knowledgable and very attentive. I go here at least twice a week. The servers are very friendly and attentive. I like the Bacchus burger or the veggie burger (which is the real deal, not a hockey puck of soy!). The salads have fresh dark greens (not iceberg). Order a gin gimlet from Dave, you will not regret it! read more

The best part of my experience was probably the water with lemon that I waited 15 minutes to order after I sat down which took another 5 minutes to get. Used to be a really nice spot to stop and eat but guess things change. Then ordered nachos and waited a half hour for them and when they came they were cold and even came with an extra side of hair. I have sought out the best and biggest beer menus anywhere I go, and this is about as good as it gets. Almost 500 beers including about 13 non alcoholic beers, Gluten free Beers, ciders, etc. They have a few beers that I have been trying to find for a long time and haven't seen anywhere else. But most people don't care about beer as much as me... The building is fantastic. A renovated brick building from the 1880's with exposed woodwork and beams with cool but not corporate decorations including a giant moose head and some life size paper mache ladies sharing a tea. We only tried a bit of the food in our one visit but my daughter said the smoked salmon quesadilla was the best quesadilla she had ever had (that is high praise...). Bean soup was pretty good, I prefer it not as pureed, and my goat cheese salad was good. My sense from out small sampling is that the food was more than creative and good enough for me but it wouldn't be the primary reason to go there. But the building, atmosphere and good service would make me a regular if I lived nearby even if the beer list wasn't amazing. For that beer list I would go even if it was a mud hut. read more

The burgers and wings at this place were good. However, visiting yesterday was not exactly impressive atmosphere or service wise. It was St. Patrick's Day, and the place was relatively dead. We wandered down since other local joints were loud and overly packed. The idea of not having at least ONE free refill on soda is a bit ridiculous. No refills on alcohol, sure that makes sense...but soda, give me a break. The waiter stopped by asked for drink orders and disappeared for a while. We finally placed our order, and were told "Sorry, we are really busy". If this restaurant cannot handle having 2-3 tables at any given time with at least 2 servers then something is wrong. It was at this point I had finished my soda and asked for a new one that I was informed they aren't free. Well, at least I was informed, but it doesn't make it less of an idiotic thing considering it is a bar with plenty of other drinks to profit from. The bathroom is a small closet space with barely enough room in the two stalls provided for a "normal" sized person to use. Place was not crowded. We waited a while to even be given menus. Waitress was lovely. ..though I blame management for not training properly. Ordered butternut squash soup* delicious but cold. No napkins, my companion finished his beer, she passed us twice and didn't notice the empty glass. @$5.00 per, she missed $10.00 in beer consumption, probably more than less. Multiply that omission X50 customers...in 1 day! Curly fries cold AND soggy. Still had to ask for napkins and utensils. My mac n cheese came with a spoon. College kids may not have discerning taste, but with such and incredibly dusty place...the food should be at least hot. Plus you are loosing $$$! read more

Disappointed again why did i came back here. I guess my hunger got the best of me and I was in the area. The place is an absolute pig sty, everthing is dirty and old. The flies are all over the place and you can't use the bathrooms. How the food. The California rap was good and the beer was tasty but my $14.00 burger was lousy, I should have gone to five guys... my french fries were cold and soggy. The place is good but can't quite decide if it wants to be a bar or upscale. Based on other reviews, we ate upstairs. Our service was not great but what was surprising was the price of the food. A chicken quesadilla was maybe a dollar or two less than a seafood pasta dish. Most of the entree type dishes were over $15, seemingly regardless of what the dish was. My boyfriend had the Bacchus Pasta, which he said was good. I had the pumpkin ravioli special (with shrimp, apples, cranberries and walnuts) which I thoroughly enjoyed. The prices are a little off putting for the bar food (and we got chips and salsa which tasted like they were from a bag and jar) but getting seafood pasta dishes made it a little more worth it. Don't forget their tremendous list of beers, which is almost overwhelming. A nice little bonus if you enjoy trying different brews. read more

Bacchus is very popular, so consider this an outlier review. The food is pretty ordinary and the noise level is high. I had a $10 serving of chili in a sourdough bread bowl. The chili was, to me, indistinguishable from the Hormel canned variety -- quite tasty, but not what I expect if I go to a touted restaurant. My companions' meals weren't inspiring either. If you're looking for a place to toss back beers or shots, or want the ambiance of lively college students, Bacchus is a fine place to go. For a meal, there are many better values in New Paltz. read more
