This place has a fabulous beer list & many vegan options. If it were not for that it would get one star solely for the condition of its frightening downstairs bathroom. As if overflowing / non flushing toilets were not enough, they have kindly removed the ceiling tiles so that the leaks from the upstairs bathroom can freely drip on your head while you are washing your hands. ***BEWARE*** I usually don't write reviews, but I had to make an exception in this case. I visited New Paltz for a weekend get away and loved the town. We came here for lunch to go and the food was horrible. I ordered the Ahi Tuna (medium) wrap with steak fries, my girlfriend ordered the Turkey Club with gluten-free bread and sweet potato fries. The tuna was not cooked medium, and it was cut very poorly, my fries were cold. My girlfriend's turkey takes like week old turkey, her fries were cold as well. The only reason it got 1 star is because the building is nice. read more

Went here on a sat night and payed 8 bucks for my fiancé and I for a cover. Band was wrapping up and asked the girl working the counter (who was great) for the pool tables if they usually charge a cover when there isn't a band playing. She said no and told us to talk to the bar manger or the guy by the door and they would refund us. Bar manager did not want to refund us so we paid a cover for nothing and then turned his back to me and laughed about with another bartender. Would've spent the door money at the bar in the end anyway. Won't be returning to say the least. Oh and the bathroom looks like you step out of a restaurant and walk into a punk rock venue bathroom with urine all over the floor. No bueno. I came here with a party of 15 and it was a consensus that the food here was no good. First of all, it took forever to get our food and once we did, it was cold and unappetizing. I got a burger with mushrooms medium well, and my meat was. It juicy at all. It was dry and flavorless, and the mushrooms didn't really help. I added a ton of Tabasco and ketchup to every bite in the vain hope that it would become tastier and juicier. I also got curly fries with my burger which was the redeeming factor but even then, they were quite flavorless and I drenched them in ketchup as well. I had a bite of my friend's mozzarella sticks and I don't know what they do to them but it was really mushy inside and honestly pretty gross. I had some chips with guacamole which were decent - the guacamole was pretty amazing. My other friend's nachos were just average. There wasn't much flavor to anything. Nobody was happy eating here, and service was bad too even though they charged us 20% gratuity. One positive aspect was they let us put four cards for a check for 9 people, so at least that was nice of them. I do not recommend this place at all! read more

Frequented Bacchus since 2002 but after this last experience I can not recommend this establishment for food/sit down dining. Upon arriving ordered a few drinks at the bar and waited around for an 8 top, which I understand on short notice could take awhile. We were seated and ordered then proceeded to wait 90 minutes to receive our food. One entree never came. While waiting, we asked to speak to a manager three times, we watched our waiter approach, what we would later find out to be the manager who ignored our requests. I understand slammed kitchens and to their credit the wait staff tried to accommodate us with pleasantries, but when the manager finally arrived at the fourth request she blamed us for not calling ahead for a table as an eight person party is "too much to accommodate on short notice." Whenever I want "bar food", this is my go-to. The beer and wine selection is pretty good, but can get a little pricey if youre trying to get hammered. Out of all the times Ive been there I was only once dissatisfied with some salad I had gotten but they were super busy and had live music so I let it slide ;) Ive tried a lot of different things on the menu and my absolute favorite is their veggie burger; if I cant decide, thats my fallback. The service is always really great, even if my table is that obnoxious one that orders chips and salsa and sits for two hours. Always tip very well. read more

Over the many years whenever I visit New Paltz, I always went to Bacchus. Loved the atmosphere, food and staff. Sadly, since the shutdown due to COVID Bacchus has not been able to get their mojo back. Not sure if the restaurant is under new management but yesterday sealed the deal and I won't be going back. Aside, from the fact, they have cut back on their menu greatly since COVID, the food really was below anyone's standard. Starting with our waiter. There were only 3 booths being used with 2 occupants in each booth, he was unable to keep any of our drink orders straight....and we all were only drinking beer. My beer order was correct but my friend's was not, he came back and handed my friend a warm canned beer. My friend had to ask for a glass - which typically should come cold. Moving on to the actual food - YUCK! I ordered their standard burger & fries. Burger hardly had cheese on it and the fries were soggy. My friend soup was not edible and their grilled cheese had nothing more then fatty bacon on it. Lastly, the ladies room - OMG. It was totally trashed, it looked like a frat party took place so apparently did not check bathroom or just simply didn't care. While this was during a holiday weekend, I have been to Bacchus many times during Memorial Day and Labor Day weekend due to the Craft Fair and NEVER had this bad of experience but as I said, they have been slowly slipping. read more

We were looking for a lace to eat lunch outside on a Saturday. Thw town was very busy and most outdoor seating was full. Also, had no desire to eat on Main Street with all the traffic or a parking lot. Bacchus has a very nice, quiet courtyard in back. We didn't order challenging food - burger and fries, calamari, but it was excellent. The handcut shoestring fries were a highlight. Service by Dustin was excellent. This joint ended up being a pleasant surprise, after a few other joints we had our eyes on had lines to sit. First off, they have an absolutely delightful little outdoor patio; easy to relax, people watch, and enjoy a cold beer. Speaking of beer, great selection! Easy to find something you like. The Ludwig Pizza was quite the original! I've never had anything like it, and still haven't had anything like it after eating here last year. While the fare at Bacchus is pretty straight forward pub food and decent enough, I can't give this place more than 2 stars just based on cleanliness. The service was meh too - but I don't blame the servers, they were clearly understaffed. I get that New Paltz is a college town but the ladies restroom there is one step above a port-a-potty on day three of a weekend long festival. It's literally "Take a deep breath and bear it." sort of facility. One of the toilets seats was missing (but casually lying next to the toilet should you decide to manhandle it back onto the toilet), and I was politely informed by another patron "Hey......I was here last year and that toilet seat was just like that!". If the toilet seat wasn't enough, the entire bathroom was covered in a layer of dirt. Not exactly what I am expecting when I am paying $20 for a burrito. Likewise the plastic covered menus had a later of dirt on them - any restaurant that cares slightly about cleanliness will have their waitstaff spray and wipe down menus each night (I know this because I waitressed for years). This place has a lot of potential, and is clearly well loved by patrons, a few upgrades to the bathroom and some enforced daily cleaning rules would make the entire experience much better. read more

Came here as part of a large group for a pre-wedding celebration. The food was tasty and the drinks came out quickly. However, by far the best part of the experience was by far the staff. Everyone we interacted with was friendly, prompt, and ridiculously accomodating. Caitlyn in particular was a delight. She snagged us a quick brownie w/ ice cream as things were wrapping up and I know she went out of her way to do it and we soo appreciated it. Bacchus was awesome. I remember I used to love their food but I don't remember what it was I ate because it was so long ago. I think I remember cajun fried shrimp or something. I don't know, but the food really was good here. The atmosphere was nice, and they also had a rock climbing wall. Not sure if they still have it, but I did try the thing once when drunk and I was trying to climb it so fast I smashed my "stuff" right into one of the knobs sticking out of the wall and fell off. This review pertains only to brunch here. It was terrible. One star terrible. This place might be better as a night spot: it looks more geared to that. In fact, it looks like a nice bar, but it claims to be a restaurant as well. As a restaurant it proved to be a VERY poor choice for brunch. I'd guess many of the locals already know this, since the place was pretty empty. As an out of towner I did not know better, so I'm posting this review as a warning to others. Our party of five was seated in a lovely backyard area reached by walking through the bar and past the pool tables. Promising. A friendly server arrived promptly and we asked for coffees. So far so good. Unfortunately this was the end of anything good about our experience here. The server returned five minutes later (without coffee) to tell us they were making a fresh pot. Fine. We placed our orders. Five minutes later another server came by with an OJ. We asked after the much needed coffee and were told it was coming. The OJ turned out to be some kind of sweetened orange drink served over ice - I'm sure it contained orange juice, but it was NOT orange juice. It wasn't very good, either. Coffee arrived almost five minutes later. What kind of place keeps people waiting almost fifteen minutes for coffee during brunch? The place wasn't crowded. It's doesn't take 15 min to brew a pot of coffee. There's no excuse. When our food came there was no excuse for it as well. The menu seemed to suggest that they specialized in Mexican/Southwestern food, so I'd optimistically ordered huevos rancheros. What arrived could only be called huevos rancheros in the loosest possible sense of what is already a dish with many variations. It consisted of two very tough FLOUR tortillas with some black beans (straight from the can) between them that were topped with fried egg, cheese, sour cream and a very small amount of chopped tomatoes that I guess were supposed to be salsa. Two of my friends who'd grown up in Cali burst out laughing at the sight of it. One called it pathetic even for east coast Mexican. Eating it proved him right. A ten year old with no experience of Mexican food could Google "huevos rancheros" and probably whip up a better version of this dish than what I was served. No care was put into the presentation, either. A vegetable omelette turned out to be overcooked egg surrounding a mountain of unseasoned vegetables, heavy on large chunks of boiled broccoli. It was edible, but it wasn't at all good. An omelette isn't hard to make. The slightest bit of caring on the part of the cook could have transformed these ingredients into something good. There was another problem: a "plain" omelette showed up with cheese. That's not a plain omelette, that's a cheese omelette. The server realized the mistake and took the plate back, which was fine, but left one of us without a plate for ten minutes while the rest of us ate. I understand that mistakes happen, but when combined with slow service and really bad food they cause more dismay than they otherwise might have. To sum up: What you order is not exactly what you get. OJ turns out to be Sunny Delight (or something similar). Huevos rancheros turns out to be a bland, tough, lazily slapped together VERY loose interpretation of the dish. A plain omelette turns out to be a cheese omelette. I'm glad none of us ordered salmon. Who knows? It might have come from a can! Service, while friendly was slow, especially given how few other diners there were. The food showed no evidence that the cook gave a damn about preparation or presentation. One can get better food than what we were served here at a diner for nearly half the price we paid. This place looked like it might be a good night spot. Very nice bar, nice beer selection, pool tables, good music playing inside, etc. Next time I have an evening free in New Paltz I'd happily duck in for a beer. AVOID THIS PLACE FOR BRUNCH! read more

There are soooo many beers to choose from! It's amazing. It's a marvel that a place like this even exists! You can go there and get a beer "passport" with about 30 states and countries on it- each time you try a beer from one of the locations, you get a stamp on it. Fill out the whole thing, and you get a t-shirt. Course, I doubt I'll have a chance to do that, but it's the journey not the destination right? Among my choices, Baltika #9 from Russia, and Purple Haze from Louisiana. For me, the name of a place is kind of a big deal and I love the fact that this place is called Bacchus, makes me feel like I'm drinking in the den of the god of wine. Atmosphere's cool. There's actually a lot of space, but it doesn't feel too big in the bar area , which is great. Also, you can go in the back and play pool, ping pong, or Foosball. The servers are fairly nice. You can tell there's a lot of regulars there and they seem to get along pretty well with the servers. I had nachos and fries (added cheese on them but not gravy- why don't more places have disco fries??). Food was decent, though not going to write home about it. Course, even if they had awesome disco fries, I probably wouldn't write home about it...I mean that's why I'm writing on yelp...they don't need to hear about my cheese fries back home really... read more

Service was RUDE and borderline racist. My group specifically chose this restaurant because it is a sports bar, we wanted to watch the game. When we walked in they had all 3 TVs set to the game, but less than 5mins into it they changed the channel to soccer. When we asked the manager if she wouldn't mind changing it back, she showed visible disdain for us and yelled for us to give her a minute. We waited, and waited. Our waitress said they didn't know how to change the channel so it would take a few more minutes, strange since they were able to Switched it to soccer with ease. I watched as she would go to the manager to remind the manager we were waiting and the manager did nothing, and it's not as though she was busy. After 30mins of waiting, they changed one of the 3 TVs to the game we wanted and said they didn't know how to change the rest. It was clear that we were the only ones in the restaurant who were even watching TV so I cannot understand why they were so set against obliging us. Maybe that isn't a huge deal, so here was our food experience there: we ordered our appetizers first and the nachos are truly amazing. Next we ordered our main dishes, and we all just ordered water with the exception of a few beers. We sat for 30-40mins after finishing the nachos, waiting for our food to be served. Our waitress walked by several times, no update on the food and didn't even refill our waters. Maybe they were busy behind the scenes, but it didn't seem that way out on the floor. We watched as tables around us received their order. It was close to 40mins of just sitting (still no water refill) when our waitress said the food would take just a little while longer, but that they were COMPLETELY out of curly fries which 3 of us had ordered with our meals. Why did it take almost an hour to find out you didn't have a certain food item? Shouldn't you know that as soon as you put the order in? They weren't even apologetic. We decided to wait another 5-10 mins more for our food, and then just decided to pay for our drinks and leave. When we told the manager why we were leaving, she simply rang up our bill, no apologies. We were not a loud/roudy/obnoxious group, we just wanted to eat and watch the game. I don't want to believe it was because we were the only people of color in the restaurant, but that was the situation. I am extremely disappointed in the way we were treated here, I had to leave a comment. Their food might be good, but the service was disrespectful and rude. read more

Bacchus is the only place I can find it in the Hudson Valley. I go to beer distributors , ask for it and they look at me like I got 6 arms. Talk about a smooth beer. Getting service here was awkward, as there was no guidance from the guy at the door. My boyfriend actually had to go back and ask him what we were supposed to do if we were getting actual food. We waited for quite some time before someone noticed us. When we were done, someone was fairly quick to bring us the check. The check came with some Andes candies...YUM! However, we waited so long for someone to pick up the check that we ended up walking to the bar to pay. Four of us had dinner here on Friday and we met at the bar beforehand. It wasn't super busy and I was so not impressed with the bar staff. We weren't greeted or acknowledged even though the bartender was right in front of us. A "hello" and "be with you shortly "would have gone a long way. Absolute disinterest-yikes. We eventually went upstairs for our meal. The food was really good as was our server, Tovah. Their prices are good and the ambiance ,unique. Ok. It really takes a lot for me to yelp about a place..... With that said, a group of five of us were driving through & decided to check the town out and get a bite. We settled on this place. The hostess (?) Told us it would be a 20 minute wait yet there was an empty table so we asked after a bit if we could take it and she said sure. (Weird!) The waitor was quite friendly although trying a bit hard with the whole "I'm one of your buds" approach... maybe its just me but when servers sit down at your table it weirds me out just a touch. But I won't hold it against him. We started by ordering a round of drinks and they came out within a reasonable time. Then it all went downhill. A few of the girls ordered the artichoke crab dip after asking the servers opinion (between that and something else) he raved so much three of them had it! I wasn't very hungry so I just ordered a side of fries and my gf went straight for dessert and got the creme bruleé. Mistake mistake mistake. After waiting what seemed like an eternity for appetizer, dessert and side we asked how much longer it would be. After about another 10-15 minutes after that our food arrived. The crab dip was disgusting. All three girls that ate it hated it---- which is odd. One girl stopped eating after two bites alltogether, another poured hot sauce in hopes to mask the wretched taste and the third was too hungry so she sucked it up and ate a bit. I looked over at the "creme brulee" my gf got and asked how it was. She shrugged. I took a bite and was so turned off. It tasted like expired vanilla snackpack that had been torched with a bic lighter... I mean if you can't make creme brulee don't put it on your menu. All five of us tasted it and thought it was gross. She left half uneaten. That says a lot. And lastly, I got fries. Correction; curly fries. You can't eff up fries right? Wrong! They were unseasoned and overcooked. I mean C'mon people. As far as the bill was concerned the only surprise is that I paid for a large order rather than a side I had asked for but we said screw it and paid and left. Just left this restaurant because of the poor customer service. Was never assigned a waitress by the overwhelmed hostess. I had to ask a young bus girl who our waitress was and she could not tell me. She then rudely took my order and rushed away before I could finish. Sat for another 15-20 minutes with no one even acknowledging us. Left the money for the drinks we ordered at the bar while waiting and walked out. They are overwhelmed and not even crazy busy. They need better management and organization. read more

I really like it here! The atmosphere is young in a very collegetown pubish kind of way. I didn't expect the food to be particularly good, but to my surprise, the food was really good! The wings were uniquely seasoned and actually quite delicious as were the fish and chips! Surprise! The service was on point and they had a few bands playing on the friday night that I went as well. The bands werent that great so I was a little upset I had to pay a $4 cover charge for it, but hey. People have to make a living somehow. read more
