I haven't dined here in quite a while, so the 5 of decided to stop in after spending the day at a winery. We only got apps,but thank goodness, it was alot of food. The star of the table for me was the spinach artichoke dip, very yummy. 2 different orders of fries, onion rings, Brussels and a few drinks. Been coming to this place for about 30 years on and off. Food is pub food and mostly tasty. Mostly affordable (oddly, they started charging .75 extra for mustard when you order a burger, that detail is truly ridic. There should just be mustard on the bar please). Service is friendly and generally attentive. But also, sometimes you walk in and there's no one to be found at the bar. Good bottled and can beer selection. Not what it once was, but still pretty decent. Overall good vibe. read more

I'd rate Bacchus three and a half stars. Solid pub. About a dozen beers on draft with a mix of macros, crafts, and locals. Lots of bottled and canned options too. They were very accommodating as we came on a Friday night and were able to seat a large group. I tried the cheese curds, coconut shrimp, sweet potato tots, sweet chili Brussels sprouts, and a cheeseburger. Consistency was good across the board. They have gendered restrooms. I've been dining at Bacchus for decades. Prior to this day, I never had a bad meal. Perhaps it was the timing; after lunch and before dinner. Our waitperson greeted us promptly and got our beverages and order. A flat coke was my introduction to late afternoon lunch. Our waitperson vanished and was replaced by the bartender who brought us our nachos (very tasty 'n generous portion). Long after nachos were finished and well after we should have had our lunches the bartender came to take away the empty plates and asked "will there be anything else"? We were somewhat surprised since we had placed our lunch order already. Obviously, waitperson #1 was gone and hadn't left info with waitperson #2 that lunches were being prepared. Once our orders arrived it was apparent they'd been sitting for some time. My fish sandwich was so fried the fishy interior was barely discernible as fish. My companion's burger was, as she stated "obviously a frozen patty". The french fries were boiled in dirty oil to the point that they could easily be used as lamp wicks. I will give Bacchus another try... perhaps closer to noon next time. But I must say, things need to return to normal if they hope to continue serving food and expect people to come back. read more

I have a question about your menu. You say "for your convenience we include a 20% gratuity for parties of 5 or more". Please don't patronize people. It has nothing to do with my convenience. It's because you are afraid people are going to be cheap if the service is sub standard. You probably pay your staff poorly so you want to make sure your customers pick up the slack. I am a generous tipper, if the service is good. Although 15% is the standard rate for tipping, I probably would have paid more than 20% but after reading that insulting remark "for your convenience" like people are stupid, I will make sure to go with a party of 4 or less and I will tip what I think the server deserves. read more

If you know me, you know that my dive bar days are long behind me. Sad, but true. Wine bars. Cocktail bars. Champagne bars. That's where you'll find me. But I really like Bacchus. Don't get me wrong. I don't play pool (nor any bar games whatsoever). I've really only been here in the summer and/or early in the evening, so I can't report to how it is on a normal middle of the school year late night (it seems like a college hang, though). It's not like I'm going to willingly come here for dinner, but they do have vegan options and I indulged in their tofu wings the other night. The breading and hot sauce game is good... but the tofu needs some serious pressing b/c those were some wet wings. Because they are served in cute little buckets, they don't really stay crispy either. Not a total fail, but an easy fix. I didn't try the ranch that comes with because I wasn't sure if that was vegan (I did check that the wings are vegan, however). Also, I am one of the rare Americans that hate ranch in general. Really not bad dive bar food. It gets the job done so that you can keep drinking. Here's the nice surprise: without thinking, I ordered the Montepulicano from the decently long list of wines by the glass. In a dive bar?! Unthinkable, right? Imagine my surprise when I realized it had not only NOT turned, but it was actually very drinkable. So. Vegan drunky food. Decent wine. Super sweet server/bartenders. I went here for my sister's bachelorette back in the summer of 2020. They sat us outside. It was pretty dingy outside on the outdoor patio which was a bit off putting. I got the French dip sandwich which I no longer see on their menu, with a side of tostones. The French dip sandwich was pretty good but the bread didn't taste that fresh. I enjoyed how they had different side options than just normal fries or sweet potato fries. I enjoyed the tostones. Worth stopping by if you're in the area for a drink and a sandwich! read more

I always hope this place will be more than it is - a slightly greasy college bar. They seem like they've paired down the beer list though it's still outstanding; but the food is always a disappointment. Our last lunch visit included wings ordered naked with sauce on the side. I don't expect a lot from plain wings, but these were bone dry and completely devoid of any flavor. I also had a chicken ceasar salad - usually hard to mess up significantly, but the chicken was rubbery and inedible. A sure sign it was cooked a lot earlier in the day. Go for some beer and pool, and stick with pub appetizers and you'll be ok. But don't expect much. read more

My friend and I got denied at the door because our id's were out of state. I am 22 and my friend is 24. They apparently don't consider out of state ID's which is bullsh*t. I just transferred to new paltz from another state and my friend was visiting me for the week. Thus the reason we have out of state id's. Invest in a scanner instead of turning your customers away. A very discriminatory rule, anyone older than 21 should be able to visit, and they should accept ID's from everywhere including international passports as there are many international students who go to SUNY new paltz, as well as transfer students. read more

We made a pit stop for food before heading back to the city. We were basically looking for bar food. This was recommended by the employee at Krause's chocolate shop. So we came on a Sunday evening. There was a 10 minute wait. We waited at the bar, and decided to just eat there because we were hungry and had to hit the road asap. I ordered the Bacchus burger and added mushrooms. Burger was ok, nothing special. Curly fries were great. My cousin got the baja fish tacos and onion rings. The rings were good. Cousin was happy with her tacos. I also tried their home brewed coffee stout which was quite good, but got a little bitter for me in the end. A pretty good stop for a bite. Good service and cool decor. Huge variety of alcohol if that's what you're into. They brew their own beers as well, so that's cool. read more

We went just to play pool but did decide to get a few drinks and an appetizer. I got a delicious whiskey sour. (There was a mistake, where the "sour" was forgotten the first time, but it was quickly and happily resolved.) Ordered the "onion pedals" (that's how it was spelled) that came with a dipping sauce. I came to this restaurant at the end of fall and promised myself I'd wait a couple months before writing a review because of how awful our experience was. I wanted to make sure I wasn't just annoyed. After a lot of thought, I decided it's only fair to let the owners know of my opinion. My dad went to college in new paltz so coming here with him and my family is always a special occasion. We decided to stop by the pizzeria around the corner (amazing slices btw) while we were waiting for my family to join us outside Bacchus. Thank god we had those slices because if we didn't, we'd be starved after our visit here. We got to the restaurant at 5pm and ordered around our drinks around 5:15. My family joined us at this time and about 15 minutes later, our app order was taken. This was the timing point for our experience. 5:45 rolled around and no one had come to check on us and see if we wanted refills or to update us on our apps. Our drinks were empty and no waiter in sight. We managed to catch our waitress and advised her that we were still waiting for our apps and placed our food order and told her we needed refills. She said she would check in with the kitchen. At this same time, a couple came and sat next to our table. Their apps AND food came at 6, drinks refilled and all. We decided to ask our waitress when she delivered our neighbors food to the table where our apps were and that this was taking way too long. (we live 2 hours from new paltz and needed to start planning our trip back home.) She ran back to the kitchen. Another 10 minutes had passed and we couldn't find her?? We went and found a waiter and asked him why in the world the food was taking so long. He told us that fried foods take longer to come out? I've worked in good and that's never been my experience- plus, the only fried food we ordered was jalapeño poppers. There was no reason for our app to take this long. We told him we wanted refills and he said he would let our waitress know! We are pretty patient people, but 6:30 rolled around and we had gotten our drinks refilled at this point but no food. So we decided we would just nix the food order and eat somewhere on our way home. A couple minutes after letting our waitress know we wanted the check, she brought our food out with the check. My sister and I had ordered a chicken quesadilla and it turned out to be just cheese, the cheese had hardened like it had been sitting out for too long. The jalapeño poppers were burnt and my stepmoms Mediterranean salad was a Cesar salad -_- . My boyfriend's and dads pasta were cool- Everyone's food was order was wrong and cold or left under a heat lamp for too long, so we decided to just eat what we could and leave. After reading the reviews about tip being included, I'm not ashamed to say that we chose not to tip. I have worked in the food industry and I would never handle my tables or customers like this! I want to say that I will update and re-review this place next time we make a trip out there, but it doesn't look like we'll ever be back here again after our awful experience. Do better!! About the place, the floors were sticky, the bathrooms were insanely small and the tables weren't cleaned off before being seated. Bacchus is a fun pub/restaurant right in downtown New Paltz. First off, the environment is very cozy. The space is large with nice wooden design. There is plenty of room to sit in tables with groups. There is outdoor seating in both the back and in the front of the pub. The bar is a fun, rather large bar with tons of alcoholic drinks. They have beer and mixed drinks, though draft beer was unavailable during COVID19 accommodations. The service is good - the waitresses have been very friendly and proficient. Their food is delicious. But not all meals are made equal, which is the charm in each item. I ordered a few different foods, and all I will say is that their Po Boy is out of this world! It made other Po Boys seem like Po Infants. The volume is amazing and the taste - m'wah! Amazing! The Po Boy was of course a recommendation from our waitress, and she did not disappoint. Definitely try Bacchus out when you're in town. Food and drinks were both delicious and I could not recommend strongly enough! read more

I got to be honest I found this place when I was looking for another restaurant, but I'm glad I did... Great little place even tho it does not look like front the outside. Great terrace, good Ambience, food was good high recommend goat cheese salad. The only issue I had was if I'm eating and ask for another glass of wine you CANNOT take 20 minutes to get it. I was denied entry even though I am 21+ years old. Instead of scanning my ID, they rather assume it's a fake. All I wanted to do was play pool. The reason for the decline was because I have an out of state ID. Seems like it's anti tourist. I was then told they will only be able to accept my out of state ID if I was 25 years old. This does not make sense at ALL. I am 24 years old. My ID will still be out of state regardless of my age. Very stupid "rule". Don't bother coming. Not worth the hassle. read more

I got a veggie burger added grilled onions & substituted for gluten free bread (which is more like a toast than a bun!) & I got steak fries on the side! We bring people here for the brussel sprouts , and overall it's a lovely place to eat. Very on brand for a day in New Paltz town. Indie, homey, fun activities. Amazing for vegetarians-- Lindsay's beyond burger and cauliflower wings are excellent. Molly was very sweet and attentive, and the staff as a whole has always brought a grounded homey feel. You can play ping pong, pool, or foosball after eating. It turns into a bar at some point, but 21 and younger crowds can come play during the day. read more

We went for the beer of course but upon seeing the menu and the great vegan/vegetarian options we ate there. The best vegan wings I have ever tried. The tofu was perfectly cooked not mushy and just the perfect amount of heat . I also really loved my wrap of sautéed veggies and olives. But the BATHROOM WERE INHABITABLE, TOILETS CLOGGED, FILTFY, WE HAD TO LEAVE , DRIVE HOME TO GO TO THE BATHROOM AND COME BACK! The meal took a long time although the restaurant was barely occupied. Wait staff is very friendly. Food is rather typical bar food and was good. The negatives are: even when not busy it takes far too long for food to arrive. I grew up in this town and I have been to every incarnation of Bacchus. I remember the salad bar upstairs - I've been missing that for years. This evening will be the last time I visit this establishment. We were five adults. Two of us had a glass of wine, one a glass of juice. A few salads, a coupla veggie quesadillas, a pasta dish. The food took, I dunno... 25 minutes? The place was not busy. The waitress was lovely. A coupla people strolled through three times with two not small dogs on leashes. The wait for the food inspired some of us to use the bathroom, wash our hands. The bathrooms in the restaurant were filthy and not in working order. Clogged toilets and so filthy - we thought about leaving but decided to try the bathroom in the billiard hall. That bathroom was taped shut with an "out of order" sign. I can't imagine what the condition could be to be deemed out of order when the "functioning" bathrooms were essentially out of order. And now I can't imagine what the kitchen must be like if that's what the customer facing bathrooms look like. The food was mediocre at best. Bye bye Bacchus. :( read more

I really like the vibe and ambiance of this restaurant but their food tasted awful and they're really expensive (around $20 per entree) considering the options they were offering on their menu. When I walked in, I thought this restaurant was very spacious and had a very chilled vibe, which was pretty cool. They also had an outdoor patio (in the back) and an upstairs dinning area for large groups which was a huge plus! I ordered their jumbo sea scallop (4) wrapped in bacon with rice & veggies. My scallops were drenched in their green chili beurre-blanc which tasted more like starchy gravy and my par-boiled rice was grainy and tasted like it was sitting in the water that they used to moisten it up after it's been sitting around too long. A huge NO-NO!!! The scallop smelled pretty fishy so that just told me it wasn't all too fresh. They specialize in southwestern and seafood cooking. However, their food was terrible and our service was super slow and worse, non-attentive. When we asked for more salsa for our chips, our waitress would say yes to our face, but didn't bother coming back in addition to our water never getting refilled. However, their beer selection seems pretty decent but aside from that and the aesthetics of their restaurant, I really can't see myself coming back here again! read more

Bacchus is always a great time when in the New Paltz area. Beers are always cold, the crowd is usually pretty chill, and the pool tables are in the side are real highlight. You can rent the pool tables for pretty cheap and get equally as cheap pitchers of basic beer too. Never had to wait for a table to play on which is a plus too. Seemed like a fun place to go till the bartenders made it a not so great experience. It generally is a beer bar but due to me having a gluten allergy I ordered dirty martini and the bartender made it with sweet vermouth and as soon as about to drink it she realize she made it wrong but then the correct martini had way too much vermouth in it...I proceeded to order a grilled shrimp salad and when It came out it was a grilled chicken Caesar salad thought it was a simple mistake told her about it and then it came out a couple minutes later as a grilled shrimp Caesar salad and if you read the menu the grilled shrimp salad is not a Caesar salad... Used to come here after climbing. But, menu has changed (7/2022). Most of the items on the Yelp menu are not on the actual menu anymore. Really missing the Chili, Ribs, Fish Tacos, Tex-Mex egg rolls and pulled pork. All gone now. Upstairs was closed and dark. Biggest beer selection was in bottles.
