I am DEFINITELY a fan of more Back A Yards opening throughout the Bay Area! It's one of my fav local spots. I'm sure it hasn't been ideal or easy for them to open this new location during COVID-19 but they did it and they're doing their best to serve the community. And I'm more than happy to support. We had initially debated ordering them for the recent #YelpsBigNightIn but instead went the very next day to grab takeout. You can order ahead OR there OR even get your food delivered. We happened to already be in the area so we stopped in, rocked our masks, and ordered two yard plates of their jerk chicken which comes with rice & beans and fried plantains (I would come here just for the fried plantains alone!) and a hot sauce that is out of this world. We added a side of cornbread to round out the meal. The food was enough for a hearty lunch and then dinner later that day. Not bad for under $30 for the two of us! Best Jamaican food I have had since I was in Jamaica and I am Jamaican. I have had Jamaican food in Florida and Toronto and it doesn't compare. I love the jerk chicken/ Pork plate. I come here often and have no problem driving from Oakland to get this amazing food. read more

A gem hidden in an unsuspecting neighborhood. Very much a hole in the wall, with delicious food to its name. The jerk rub was full of flavor, but not overpowering. Whether it was the pork or chicken, the food was always moist and could make your mouth water. We have never eaten here and not had an amazing meal. The chicken is always tender and juicy (white or mixed meat) and the pork is to die for. Their menu isn't extensive, but that doesn't matter. What they have is excellent. We lived in Miami for a few years and miss plantains- Back a Yard knocks these out of the park. Delicious! We ordered some food to be delivered through Uber Eats since we are sheltering in place. The jerk pork bowl was so good! Some of the best tasting pork I've ever had. I only wish it had come with more dressing since the amount in the one little sauce container wasn't nearly enough to dress the salad. The jerk pork wrap wasn't seasoned quite as well, but it did come with plenty of jerk sauce to slather over it and kick the flavors up. The fried plantains were sweet and tart and wonderful, and the Jamaican patties (similar to empanadas) were on point. I will definitely be ordering from the again. read more

The Jerk Chicken is always perfect! I could just eat rice and peas with their jerk sauce poured on top for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

The location on 13th street is close to home and am happy to say they are consistent with the other locations. Food is always super flavorful and hits a home run. I love the oxtails and jerk chicken, but the Jamaican Pattie's are so flaky and delicious. Another favorite is the cornbread and plantains. My go to whenever I'm craving island food! For what you're getting it's pretty expensive to say the least. The chicken dishes are very rubbery and has this weird aftertaste to it. It may be due to a bad batch or cheap quality of using broiler chickens. The plantains are pretty good though. Jamaican patties are the same ones you get at the dollar store made by a east coast company called Golden Krust. I used to frequent their location in East Palo Alto which was must better because the chef had better quality control. read more

This location is terrible . Maybe it's because they're by a college so they feel they can just sell you anything and those kids will buy it . I usually go to the location on Capitol but they were closed so I came to this one . I ordered the oxtails and they were dry and gave me no oxtail grave at all in the plate not even enough to wet the rice . Just terrible. I'll never go to this location again. read more

I've ordered from this restaurant twice through Door Dash and both times did not receive what I ordered. First time I was missing my greens which I just let them have it because of the hassle of getting refunded but the second time they failed to deliver my drink. Although Door Dash gave me a credit and whom I spoke with at the restaurant said on my next order they'd replace it I'm not sure I want to purchase anything from this business again if they can't send what I paid for. The food itself was tasty which is why I gave it a star but if the business is gonna short change its customers by not going over the order to make sure everything ordered and paid for is delivered it is a poorly ran business. read more

This review is for the Sister Company on 10th & San Salvador downtown. Today (9/29/22) the "Shift Mgr" must of been having a "bad day" as some may say. Her customer service was/is HORRIBLE. She is completely disrespectful to customers and fellow employees. I highly recommend you stay away from this location unless STARVING and the other locations are unreachable. I frequent all other locations as l am a foodie blogger & this was my first but last time to that location. Hopefully you all get a better experience than we did. I was told that the 13th St location was the Corporate office so we decided to let them know in person. Im not convinced at all that ANY discipline will be given to the shift manager; the lady we spoke to didnt seem too interested in how DISRESPECTFUL HER SHIFT MGR was...or she already knows but they family...ldk but its a shame for them as we wont be eating at either anymore... OX TAIL. If you have never tried it, this is a great place to start. Fall off the bone, tender, melt in your mouth, and flavor you will keep licking your fingers until the end. Honestly, 98% of the time I'm ordering ox tail, rice, and greens. I really need nothing else when it come to this place. My husband is not a fan ox tail in general so he always gets the jerk chicken plate with plantains and corn bread. The unique flavor of jerk chicken is such a treat especially bc they do their meat perfect. All of it is fall off the bone which leads me to the curry lamb. yummmm. Probably the worst order placed. My salmon was raw. Forgot my chicken and provided no salad dressing for the salad. To top it off I ordered for delivery via grub hub. That ain't cheap. I called the restaurant and the lady told me to bring it back. If I was able to go to the store I would have. Since I spent almost $50 I went there. My order was replaced and still for got dressing and chicken, I was given dark meat when I ordered white meat. Got damnnn!! This place is off da heeezy! I was looking for a good Caribbean place in San Jose and thankfully I found it. All jerk chicken will be compared to the best I've ever had at a place in PG County Maryland and still haven't found anything better. But don't hesitate checking this place out. The jerk chicken is decent but not my fave mainly because the pieces weren't as tender as I would've hoped. I also like more sauce in my jerk :-) Seriously though the jerk salmon was amazing...grilled perfectly with the inside still being tender. The curried goat and beef oxtail are my faves though and go well with the beans, rice and plantains. This is one of those meals that you don't ask or think about the fat content or how unhealthy it is. Just shut up and enjoy the thing!! I want to try the key lime pie or their other dishes/drinks but haven't had the time. Will comment on these one day. read more

This year we decided to try the thanksgiving meal. We got the boneless jerk turkey with sides. It was all excellent with the turkey in particular being a HUGE hit with my extended family! Ordered online for a takeout. The restaurant is on a busy location with only street parking or I heard a very small parking lot - Keep that in mind when you pick up your order. I would suggest you bring someone so they can run in. I got the jerk chicken and oxtail plate, goat curry, coco bread and Mac and cheese. Unfortunately I did not care for bread (pretty basic) or mac and cheese (a little too greasy and salty for me) but the entrees were amazingly tasty.
