    Jamaican Patty
    Christian T.

Had a great meal at Coconut Bar and Grill. I ordered the sampler platter along with the oxtails and jerk chicken combo, and everything was packed with flavor. The sampler platter was a great way to try a variety of items, everything was cooked well seasoned. I particularly enjoyed the beef patty, fried chicken wings, and the shrimp. As someone who eats a lot of Caribbean food, I thought the Jamaican patties were spot on and definitely a stand out item. In the combo plate, the oxtail was very good and paired really nice with the rice and peas, which also had a ton of flavor and well-seasoned. The standout items for me though were the oxtails which were tender and rich, with deep, comforting flavor. The friend chicken and the peas and rice. The vibe of the restaurant was laid-back and welcoming, and the service was friendly and attentive throughout the meal. Overall, definitely a spot worth checking out if you're craving Caribbean flavors. I'd come back again just for the beef pies!

COCONUTS! My friend always talked this spot up and it delivered! The food was fantastic, I was craving a Jamaican patty for the longest time and let me tell you it hit! My friends favorite the ox tail was extremely succulent. The service was a bit slow but I think they were understaffed at the time. They were at least very nice about everything. Cute spot inside too, lots of great theming and decor to go with the restaurant. Easy reccomend!

BUSSSSSIN'! Ambiance was great, they had the Laker game on, so that's already a positive. Everything was delicious, we ordered, Mac n' Cheese, Greens, Jerk Chicken & Curried Shrimp combo, Jerk Salmon plate and festival bread! This was some of the best Jamaican food I've had in a long time! Having just recently relocated to Nor Cal from SoCal, I wasn't expecting to find a gem of carribbean food so fast. The service was immaculate the kitchen was busy with to-go orders and sit in patrons but we were seated immediately and served within 15 minutes of placing our orders. I'll definitely be back for some patties, oxtail and more festival. 100/10

Passed this place so many times because I didn't know anything about it. Fortunately my buddy decided we should meet there for drinks. It was a good choice. I am not very familiar with Jamaican food, so I let my buddy order an appetizer. We had the Crispy Pork Bites and they were good. It was a mix of sweet and savory and unexpected. Sometimes the unexpected is just what was needed. We also had a couple of drinks each. It was two Da Pain Killers for him and two Windy Rum Punches for me. It might be my go-to drink at CCR. All in all, a good place for drinks and bites. I'm sure their dinner entrees as good as well. Here are the pics.

I tried the oxtail / jerk chicken combo: - 4.8/5: The jerk chicken spice is very flavorful, and not too hot. Addictive. - 4.0/5: The oxtail is more about texture than flavor. It's greasy comfort food. Drinks: - 4.7/5: They make a very good Dark 'n Stormy cocktail. Leftovers taste even better the next day.

Finger licking good. Everything on the plate is seasoned so well: the braised oxtails, jerk chicken, even the rice&beans and plantains. We ordered takeout but everything was piping hot and fresh. Huge portion of meat and food for the entrees. We ordered: - jerk chicken and oxtail combo: super flavorful. oxtail was well cooked and the meat was tender but also had chewy texture near the bone. Tasted so many different spices in the marinade. Rice and beans were well seasoned too and soak up the oxtail marinade. Plantains were chefs kiss, piping hot till the end and a little crispy on the edges. Jerk chicken was good too but the oxtail stole the stage in this dish. - braised oxtail: definitely a fan favorite. Server/host was very friendly and our food was prepared right away. Highly recommend if you're in the area.

I loved combo coconut curry shrimp, oxtails, plantains and rice.

Absolutely delicious. Good service and wonderful food. Love the cool Ambience too. Hubby had jerked chicken and oxtails. We loved it all. Too stuffed for dessert.

I love how they have the public parking structure across the street. Makes it feasible to drive and not go crazy finding parking spots. Unfortunately the wait time is so ridiculous on this restaurant but I was so hungry and am a picky eater so I opted to suck it up and wait. I am so glad we waited because the food is worth the wait! My favorite was their vegetable empanada. I can tell that it's made from scratch and the veggie filling was not shy on flavor. My husband got the oxtail and he really enjoyed his food as well!

Poor service on Tuesday night with the restaurant practically empty. We were seated outside, with our order taken in a timely manner. Our drinks came pretty quickly, but our food never made it. After 40 mins and noticing everyone else received and finished their dinner, I got up and flagged down our waitress. When I asked her the status of our order, she looked at me like I was crazy. Yup she didnt even put it in our order, so we walked out. I do like the food here but service has always been inconsistent, and so we wont be returning. I wonder how bad it is on a busy night.

Didn't get to try too many things on the menu but I did enjoy the Jamaican beef patty and the oxtail. The beef patty was delicious. Had a nice little spice to it and it was seasoned well. Came out piping hot with a few dipping sauces on the side. By the time I realized, I had devoured more than half of it and neglected to take a picture. The oxtail plate was also a win. They piled on the protein and didn't skimp out what so ever. The meat was fall off the bone tender. The plate comes with both plantains and rice&beans. I would definitely return for these two items again

    Jamaican Curried Goat

I've grown up all my life eating Jamaican food so I have a high standard whenever I eat it outside. No one ever makes it better than Granny, but that doesn't mean the food can't taste good. Unfortunately, I can't say I had a stellar experience at Coconuts. I came with a couple of friends and I was excited to share some food from my culture. I've eaten at the sister restaurant, Back a Yard, and the food was pretty good there so I thought it would also translate here. I ordered the jerk wings for the table and the curry goat for myself. The jerk wings had good flavor but some of them were overcooked and hard. The curry goat was alright but I felt like it tasted better at the sister restaurant. I wish I could have gotten a Sorrel but they were all out :/. The staff were pretty nice when we were ordering but I feel like our table was forgotten after our food came. The team came to check on us once or twice to see how the food was but afterwards, I didn't really see them until it was time to pay. I say this because my water was empty ever since my curry arrived and it wasn't refilled. It remained that way for the whole time and I was there for at least an hour and a half. I could have asked for more water but I was waiting for the ginger beer that I was charged for and never arrived. I was so caught up in the conversation with my friends that all of these things didn't connect until after the experience sunk in. On the menu it says that the meal was supposed to come with rice and peas(rice and beans) but mine came with white rice. I didn't realized this until I brought home my leftovers and my fiancée pointed it out. I also ordered her the curry goat to go but hers had a grey color that was different from mine and it tasted completely different. The coconut shrimp with the mango sauce was good though! Overall, I wasn't impressed with the whole experience. I would say I'd give it another shot and it may have just been a bad night but I think I would rather stick with the sister restaurant because at least the food was consistent the 3 times I went.

You're Jamaican Me Crazy The brainchild of Jamaican Chef Robert Simpson, Coconuts, and their sister Back-A-Yard (BAY) restaurants, serve up what might be the gold standard of Jamaican/Caribbean cuisine in The Bay. I fell in love with the fast-casual DTSJ BAY many years ago as one of my favorite lunch spots, and has been eyeing coming here for many, many years, as they've been in operation since 2008. The Good: *Great location in DT Palo Alto that's a little off the strip. *Free street and lot parking but watch the signage for limited hours. *Friendly staff *Their food smacks hard. Pretty much everything we had was fantastic, and even my picky son enjoyed it all. *Corn Festivals are a must-order item here, as they're sweet fried cornmeal dough that's fantastic for sopping up the sauce. *Ox-tails is also always a fall-off-the-bone winner, as well. I don't know what's in the sauce that it's served with, but you'll want to sop up every little bit (see the aforementioned corn festivals). *Beer, sangria, and cocktails. The Meh: *No outdoor dining *Service was fine overall, but it did take a little while to get acknowledged after we were seated. The Ugly: *Restaurant is a little, um, "grungy." As I'm not sure it's had a nice deep cleaning since they first opened in 2008. Conclusion: Fantastic Caribbean food in a relaxed, casual, and welcoming environment.

Jerk shrimp platter and a rum punch
    Carl W.

Me and my wife stopped by Coconuts for lunch. She ordered the oxtail platter and I ordered the curry shrimp platter and a rum punch but instead I asked could they put jerk seasoning on my shrimp instead of curry and she said absolutely. My wife said the oxtail platter was tender and flavorful. My jerk shrimp platter was great not as spicy as I would have liked it to be but everything else was fine including the rum punch. Staff was nice and friendly.

Ask the Community - Coconuts Caribbean Restaurant & Bar

Is the restaurant open for outdoor seating?

Yes we went last week. They have outdoor patio seating on a first come first served basis. Order your food first and they will bring it out to you on the patio in to go containers.

What are the hours for this place during covid? I've tried calling several times around 5 and 6pm, and no one answers the phone. Also, it says the store is unavailable / closed on caviar and doordash?

The update on the website says that hours are 11:30am - 7pm. https://www.coconutspaloalto.com

    Is this place children friendly?

I looked at the menu online and they offer breaded chicken tenders with fries and macaroni & cheese for kids. Should be ok to bring kids as long as it's not late night.

Planning on a Thursday evening b-day celebration with a couple friends this coming week. We won't be there til near 7:30; should I make reservations? Any drink or apps recommendations for 3?

I would recommend making reservations just in case

We arrived at about 1:00-1:30 and the inside main dining area was already closed to patrons as staff prepared for the evening service. The host's tone did not encourage potential customers to dine there during the transition to dinner prep. Not a great first impression that gave off a late arrival so you'll get what's leftover vibe which was exacerbated by being forgotten for what seemed to be a half hour before our waitperson came to take our order. We chose to sit in the front sidewalk patio which was cold and windy not an alternate choice we will need to make again. We ended up sitting across from two loud, self-centered, immature, foul-mouthed college grad girls bragging about studying for their masters attempting to appear cultured were distracting everyone on that patio. After we placed our order, we finished up the app and hubbs was furious they forgot about his glass of pinot which arrived without an apology for the delay preceding our plate arrivals. I had the ny strip steak on the breakfast menu which came out perfectly med-well & added cilantro rice which was good although a little sticky not fluffy. Hubbs had the salmon which looked amazing and he enjoyed the mango sauce--the dish just didn't fill him up. Good thing we ordered fresh chips, salsa& guac.--which was very well prepared; the freshest guac I've ever had. It had fresh chopped tomatoes & green chiles all perfectly combined. Our wait person/food server made up for the less than stellar first impression of the host. And the food was flavorful. The ambiance was ruined by the diners across from us and the forgetfulness of taking our orders timely and serving the wine after the appetizer couldn't bring us back from what started out as negative experience. There are many restaurants up & down the bay that we aren't bothered. This wasn't the best reception nor dining experience and we are moving on. We hope it's a lesson and possibly could've just been a bad day for the crew, and unfortunately there is so much competition out there. We highly recommend the food for its freshness and flavor; recommend the salmon dish for its flavor and balance but not for its portion size. And wish this place nothing but the best and to improve where they dropped the ball.

But then again, I have a bit of intolerance to bell peppers so beware if you do also. There's a good amount of rice and I love me a good amount of rice with gravy. The carne asada burrito was sizeable. Lots of meat, rice, and beans and a bit of lettuce. S E R V I C E A nice lady took our order and also let us know they did take over this spot from the original owners about a year or so ago. We paid easily and got our food in a timely manner. O V E R A L L As I mentioned, the food was fine and okay. Good especially if you want something really hearty which a lot of folks who go to Home Depot need energy to sustain their work! I can see why it's thriving in that spot. So I would suggest ordering, then doing your Home Depot shopping, and your food should be ready to go by the time you come out....well if you're doing a quick trip of course. They also have $5 specials which is nice. Try them out!
