I came here on Friday night with a friend. Staff does a good job checking on us. However, one of their recommendations was a huge fail. Amongst the items they recommended was the ribs and chicken combo. Ribs were tender but they were just basic bbq sauce ribs. My friend was disappointed since he expected them to lean on Caribbean flavors. I had the chicken and oxtail combo which included rice and beans, and plantains. Decent size portion with a couple of oxtails, two thighs and drumstick. The proteins were moist and tender, but very under-sauced. The collard greens were tender and velvety! I'd suggest that too. It can get loud. But I think that was mostly because people are compensating when one table is loud. read more

This was my first time having Caribbean food and it did not disappoint. Everything was flavorful and cooked so well. First, the plantains were so crisp outside and super soft inside. The sweetness from the plantains paired so well with the savory flavors of the meats. The jerk pork was tender, crisp in some spots, and delicious; the jerk chicken was perfectly cooked, well-roasted on the outside, and not at all dry inside; the oxtail was yummy and so tender. My favorite was definitely the jerk chicken. Then, previous to this plate, I've only had red bean rice, which was soggy rice mixed with red beans, so the seasoning on this rice surprised me, and it tasted so good. This was my first time ever coming to this Caribbean style restaurant! My aunt and I wanted to try something different and we both like things with good flavor and a little bit of spice!! I suggested Caribbean food since I just had Peruvian food the weekend before. You should look for my review of Límón in downtown Mountain View. Since there's construction going on in the area, I didn't realize there was a parking lot adjacent to the entrance of the restaurant! Lol I circled back around and parked in the underground parking. It smelled really bad as I walked up, but I guess whatever they were cooking in the City Hall is what made the parking garage smell? It didn't matter because from the street I could hear the joyous Caribbean beats and I really like that music. It just makes you feel happy and want to dance even if you don't know how!! Apparently, just before me was a giant catering order so the four employees were quickly getting things set up and chefs were moving back-and-forth and saran wrapping and packing up this big order. I asked if I could do takeout and they handed me a menu! I ended up ordering two different dishes. I ordered: *chicken jerk- dark meat * 2- Jamaican patty; chicken * vegetable stirfry * side; mac & cheese and coleslaw * rum cake * pineapple upside down cake My aunt had never had Jamaican jerk before and she loved the spice of the chicken! My three-year-old niece, however thought it was too spicy, but she really liked the plantains! We picked off the chicken skin for her and she ate the meat underneath. We ate the spiced Jamaican jerk!! Lol my niece also loved the macaroni and cheese, and the vegetables! My aunt loved the coleslaw as did I since it had a delicious crunch and the vegetable had a good spice mixture and I was really surprised with how filling the vegetables were since I got that as my dish! I wasn't hungry for any meat, but I ate a Jamaican patty, which is more like an empanada and that thing was freaking delicious!! My three-year-old niece also loved the empanada, Jamaican patty! Both of the cakes we got were delicious and had so much flavor!! I actually didn't eat my cake till later that afternoon with a cup of coffee, but goodness that rum cake was just as tasty as my grandma used to make but a different style. Had a great meal at Coconut Bar and Grill. I ordered the sampler platter along with the oxtails and jerk chicken combo, and everything was packed with flavor. The sampler platter was a great way to try a variety of items, everything was cooked well seasoned. I particularly enjoyed the beef patty, fried chicken wings, and the shrimp. As someone who eats a lot of Caribbean food, I thought the Jamaican patties were spot on and definitely a stand out item. In the combo plate, the oxtail was very good and paired really nice with the rice and peas, which also had a ton of flavor and well-seasoned. The standout items for me though were the oxtails which were tender and rich, with deep, comforting flavor. The friend chicken and the peas and rice. The vibe of the restaurant was laid-back and welcoming, and the service was friendly and attentive throughout the meal. BUSSSSSIN'! Ambiance was great, they had the Laker game on, so that's already a positive. Everything was delicious, we ordered, Mac n' Cheese, Greens, Jerk Chicken & Curried Shrimp combo, Jerk Salmon plate and festival bread! This was some of the best Jamaican food I've had in a long time! Having just recently relocated to Nor Cal from SoCal, I wasn't expecting to find a gem of carribbean food so fast. The service was immaculate the kitchen was busy with to-go orders and sit in patrons but we were seated immediately and served within 15 minutes of placing our orders. Passed this place so many times because I didn't know anything about it. Fortunately my buddy decided we should meet there for drinks. It was a good choice. I am not very familiar with Jamaican food, so I let my buddy order an appetizer. We had the Crispy Pork Bites and they were good. It was a mix of sweet and savory and unexpected. Sometimes the unexpected is just what was needed. We also had a couple of drinks each. It was two Da Pain Killers for him and two Windy Rum Punches for me. It might be my go-to drink at CCR. Vibes were vibing once I walked into this place. Music selection was on point and if I would have done my research I would have made it on time for HH. It's okay I'll be back I have high hopes for places that call themselves Caribbean restaurants. Only because my exposure is top tier. So I come in ready to judge. As someone from New York, I've been spoiled when it comes to Caribbean food. After living in the Bay for several years, I've been on a mission to find something that comes close, and this place had so many glowing reviews that I came in with high hopes. I was seriously craving a full spread, beef patty, jerk chicken, oxtail with rice and peas....the works. But right off the bat, the experience felt a little off. It was a hot day in Palo Alto, and I was honestly surprised there was no air conditioning, especially given the price point (which is very much in line with Palo Alto expectations). There were only ceiling fans, and the space felt uncomfortably warm. I ended up switching to takeout because sitting there just didn't seem enjoyable. Maybe it was meant to give island vibes, but it didn't quite land that way for me. Something about the overall feel made me question the authenticity, so I kept it simple and ordered a beef patty. Unfortunately, it was pretty underwhelming lacking the flavor and texture I'd expect from a solid Jamaican patty. It didn't hit the mark or satisfy the craving I came in with. I've grown up all my life eating Jamaican food so I have a high standard whenever I eat it outside. No one ever makes it better than Granny, but that doesn't mean the food can't taste good. Unfortunately, I can't say I had a stellar experience at Coconuts. I came with a couple of friends and I was excited to share some food from my culture. I've eaten at the sister restaurant, Back a Yard, and the food was pretty good there so I thought it would also translate here. I ordered the jerk wings for the table and the curry goat for myself. The jerk wings had good flavor but some of them were overcooked and hard. The curry goat was alright but I felt like it tasted better at the sister restaurant. I wish I could have gotten a Sorrel but they were all out :/. The staff were pretty nice when we were ordering but I feel like our table was forgotten after our food came. The team came to check on us once or twice to see how the food was but afterwards, I didn't really see them until it was time to pay. I say this because my water was empty ever since my curry arrived and it wasn't refilled. It remained that way for the whole time and I was there for at least an hour and a half. I could have asked for more water but I was waiting for the ginger beer that I was charged for and never arrived. I was so caught up in the conversation with my friends that all of these things didn't connect until after the experience sunk in. On the menu it says that the meal was supposed to come with rice and peas(rice and beans) but mine came with white rice. I didn't realized this until I brought home my leftovers and my fiancée pointed it out. I also ordered her the curry goat to go but hers had a grey color that was different from mine and it tasted completely different. The coconut shrimp with the mango sauce was good though! Overall, I wasn't impressed with the whole experience. I don't know what's in the sauce that it's served with, but you'll want to sop up every little bit (see the aforementioned corn festivals). *Beer, sangria, and cocktails. She ordered the oxtail platter and I ordered the curry shrimp platter and a rum punch but instead I asked could they put jerk seasoning on my shrimp instead of curry and she said absolutely. The server was polite but straight to the point with minimal interaction. The food came out relatively quick, and was descent. Came here kind of by accident after another spot nearby had a super long wait, and honestly it ended up being such a great find. Edward took care of us and was so friendly from the start. He remembered our names, checked in on us a few times, and just made the whole experience feel really welcoming. We asked to sit at a different table because of the sun and he was super accommodating and even adjusted the shade for us. Food was sooo good. We came here based on a recommendation. We usually never come around this area and I love Caribbean food, so I was so eager to try it. It was a warm Sunday afternoon and the restaurant wasn't too packed, but I could tell they were a little understaffed. Since I only saw two servers, I can completely understand why they took some time to come around. The servers were also really nice and apologetic for the wait, so that made up for it. Loved this place! Went on Saturday and got there right at 5p. The place was already pretty full. I'd make a reservation during peak times. I had the dark meat chicken, tender, perfectly seasoned for me (wonderful flavors but not too spicy), and delish. It came with rice made with coconut milk and red beans, and fried plantains, also very delectable. Huge portions - took a good amount home. Also had a chicken Jamaican patty, which I ordered to go since I knew I'd be too full. It's the Jamaican version of an empanada, and much larger than the empanadas I've had. It was so yummy the next day, just reheated in a dry pan to crisp it up. Our server was very personable and attentive. It's quite noisy and lively, though, like a loud bistro level, so it's not the place for quiet conversation if that's what you're looking for. Delicious, flavorful and bold. This place has a casual vibe that I can understand. It did remind me of Jamaica a lil bit in terms of the bright colors and tasty Caribbean flavors. The service was standout for-sure, the server was lively and nice. It was some good, authentic food but cannot compare to eating in Jamaican, however it came pretty close. I recommend! read more

We had our wedding rehearsal dinner at Coconuts about nine months ago, and I am still thinking about it! Honestly, their overall Yelp rating should be way higher because this place is absolutely incredible. They fed us like kings! The food is completely out of this world--the oxtail is a must-order, and the meat pies, sweet plantains, and anything with coconut were all phenomenal. On top of how good everything tastes, the pricing is super reasonable for Palo Alto. The hospitality is next level. The manager went out of his way to make our event perfect and even treated us to lunch when we came back later. Incredible food, great prices, and the best service. You have to eat here! read more

I swear I wrote a review previously, but I don't see it.. Coconuts is a hit! If you're in the Palo Alto area and craving some delicious Caribbean food, or just food in general, go check it out! My fiancee and I love coming here. Whenever we're in the area, this is where we grab a bite. There's seating inside or they have a outdoor patio area on the side. I love the oxtail here, it's amazing. I usually get the oxtail/chicken combo, comes with rice & beans, and some plantains, delicious. The oxtail is nice and tender, not tough at all. It almost falls off the bone. The sauce is packed with flavor. The jerk chicken is also super tender, and the jerk sauce adds a kick to the plate. I'm not the biggest fan of the rice/beans but it compliments the oxtail and chicken well. The plantains adds a nice sweet touch, cooked perfectly. The portions are good, it's the perfect amount imo.
