I was excited to see that they opened a Southern comfort kitchen here in San Jose because I love going to the Castro Valley location. I door-dashed my usuals which is the Shrimp and Grits, the 50/50 catfish with who dat style shrimp and the beignets. Shrimp and Grits - The flavor of the grits were good but the shrimp was way too overcooked and rubbery. 50/50- shrimp was also very dry overcooked and rubbery and the catfish smelled and tasted very fishy. The shrimp was supposed to be who dat style and it came plain. Also did not come with the remoulade sauce. Beignets- unfortunately stale and hard, all you can really taste is the oil it was fried in. I'm hoping that they improve on this location here in sj because I do enjoy quality and taste of the castro valley location. read more

Coincidentally, if you're willing to leave with some salt, though - pun intended - then this is the place to go! - - - - - - I've tried quite a few southern foods, and I have to admit Southern Comfort Kitchen easily ranks at the bottom. Ordering was easy and non-interactive at the self-service kiosk. I had their catfish and chicken combo with upgraded spicy crab cajun fries. The first inconvenience was trying to find the spicy crab cajun fries (which I wanted to order a la carte) because they were nowhere to be found despite being on the menu. The wait was about 30 minutes, when the staff said 15, and after checking in, 2 minutes became 10 minutes... the food must've been worth it, right? Excitedly, I dug in. Eating the chicken was difficult. For starters, it was tough. And to make matters worse, this was super salty. Surely, the catfish must be better, right? The catfish was thin and battered, barely fried, and lacked any source of detectable flavor - almost the polar opposite! Surely, the spicy crab cajun fries can't disappoint right? If the chicken was salty, then the spicy crab cajun fries were identically eating straight from the salt can. These were salty as can be, with some average reheated frozen fries. No amount of water could have prepared and saved me from the abomination that was dinner this night... (at least not two bottles worth). My honest opinion: save your money and go elsehwere! read more

We ordered the catfish and shrimp combo, which should have came with two sides, but it only came with one. We ordered cheesy grits, mac and cheese, and jambalaya on the side. Unfortunately, the beignets were unavailable. The jambalaya tasted like something straight out of a box - 2/10. The mac and cheese was a 4/10. The grits were decent but definitely needed salt and pepper. The catfish was extremely thin, and the shrimp were also very small. I honestly expected more authentic Southern Soul food flavors and a more welcoming experience. Unfortunately, it just didn't live up to what I was hoping for. On a positive note, the pricing was decent for the area. However, I wasn't greeted when I came up to the counter, which made the experience feel very unwelcoming overall. We ordered the... 50/50 w/ Cajun Fries: Half this and half that pick 2 of the following 2pc Mississippi Catfish fileted, 4 Gulf Shrimp, 2 Oysters 2pc Chicken Strips served w/ remoulade sauce & your choice of 1 side. Blackened Shrimp w/ Grits: 7 Gulf Shrimp pan seared w/ blackened seasoning, garlic, butter, worcestershire infused creamy Abita Beer Sauce on Cheesey Grits. I was lucky enough to just happen upon their pre-opening few months ago and tried them out. The store wasn't listed on yelp or google at the time so I didn't write a review at then, so this is all coming from my memory. I was in San Pedro for a beer and saw that there was a brand new store. Southern comfort food. I thought heck, let's try it! I've been to the deep south few times for work as well as New Orleans, and I absolutely loved the southern food. But, I didn't expect much to be honest, since it is in middle of San Jose. Although south bay got some amazing places like the Jackie's Place (I have to do a review on them someday), it's not really not known for southern comfort food. I've got their catfish po'boy and got the fries upgraded to crab fries. When the food came out with the generous portion, I was already feeling good. I took a bite out of the sandwich and hit with a shock. It was just like, or even better than many of the authentic cat fish I've had in the south. The cornmeal around the fish had the perfect flavor and texture that you really can't find outside the south. The sauce and the bread all worked out in unison. The crab fries had plenty of crab and went amazing with the seasoned fries and the condiments. I'm so excited to have this place as the new addition to San Pedro. It's right near market beer company so it's great to enjoy the food wish some refreshing beer. I kind of like this other building in San Pedro since it's usually much more chill than the main one, so the atmosphere is on point for me. Staffs were nice and friendly too. We went to lunch there today and it was an abysmal mistake. I had the fried chicken sandwich and the chicken was dry and the bread was sliced at a weird angle and stale. I tossed the bread. It could've been better with tons of sauce and more pickles, but there was very little sauce or pickles on it. The common area was infested with flies. It was absolutely disgusting. Soco Kitchen in Castro Valley has been a fave spot for years. I was so excited to happen upon it in San Pedro square! I'd been planning to hit up the OG location for some Who Dat shrimp. I got the Po boy sandwich with who dat shrimp and added the crab fries for $25. Sadly, it didn't hit. The bread on the po boy was way too big in relation to the shrimp and slaw. It was untoasted as well so kinda worked against those crispy shrimp. I've only had The Who dat shrimp with rice before so maybe their po boys are just like that. The crab fries weren't loaded like I've had before either, maybe because it was added as a side. They were just mid. It took 25-30 mins for the food to be ready. They were slammed so that was understandable but if you're with folks that go to some of these other spots, you may be waiting while they're finishing up so may want to ask what the wait time is if you're in a rush. A sign said grand opening - we just went this week. It's a small spot so they may be getting things together still. I'll definitely give it another chance with my regular order. read more

I saw this place on DoorDash and I wasn't sure what to expect really. Well expectations were meet & exceeded. The food was so amazing! It was so good & flavorful I had to share with my friends. For lunch I ordered the mac n cheese (without breadcrumbs), red beans & rice, and 50/50 catfish and shrimp. I wanted to sample as much as I could so happy I did! This evening was my first order from this restaurant. I did not receive my Who Dat Chicken that I really wanted (only received the side of grits) and my boyfriend ordered Who Dat Shrimp and received PLAIN fried shrimp. Need to change the oil for the hush puppies cause they taste like old grease. I tried calling restaurant and mailbox is full so unable to leave a message to credit my account the $20.95+ tax for my missing Who Dat Chicken. Ticket #68. I Really wish staff would pay closer attention to get orders correct. We Really wanted to try the Who Dat Sauce and very disappointed the two main orders were not correct. Bummer. read more

I travel to New Orleans regularly for their food and I'm so glad Southern Comfort opened up this location. Everything I tried is seasoned to perfection, I especially loved the mac & cheese and seafood gumbo. Would highly recommend if you're looking for that true SOUTHERN COMFORT!!
