The service was super friendly and accommodating, like talking to family. There were so many good options and the prices were affordable! Especially, for Caribbean food. My partner kept telling me how good of a find this place was and I felt accomplished, LOL! We got excited because this is probably one of our favorite cuisines. We ordered the goat curry, mac and cheese, mixed veggies, collard greens, vegetable curry, beef patty, and two orders of fried cornmeal bread... all for a family of 3 (the 3rd human being a 14 month old hahaha). I thought I can give the baby the vegetable curry, but it turned out to be too spicy so hence why we got the mac and cheese and plain mixed veggies. Everything was fire! Maybe with the exception of the collard greens because that tasted like it was cooked in tabasco or something. Their juices were good too! Portions are generous. Luckily, we had leftovers to enjoy the next day. The beef patty was yummy, but I do wish it came with some type of dipping sauce. All the dishes tasted authentic, I felt like I was back in Jamaica. My friends were raving about Back A Yard from their work days so I had to stop in for lunch to give this Jamaican joint a try. I ordered the Jerk Chicken & Jerk Pork combo and a couple other friends ordered the Jerk Salmon & Beef Oxtail combo, so I got to sample all of the meats. The chicken, pork, and oxtail were all amazingly flavorful and tender, and the salmon was surprisingly not dry and cooked well! My friends really loved the oxtail, but my favorite was probably the chicken or pork; you really can't go wrong with any of them! Each combo came with generous portions of meat, rice and beans mixed together, and 4 fried plantains which really helped to balance out the strong flavors of the meat. This is an order-at-the-counter establishment with a fair amount of indoor seating and lovely Caribbean decor, notably a huge mural on one wall. Although we fully expected to pick up our food at the counter when ready, the cashier graciously delivered each of our plates to the table we were sitting, with napkins and utensils included. When I entered, they were around already 10 people dining and enjoying their food; everyone was enjoying the food that's for sure. I ordered their jerk chicken + oxtail combo. It was about a 7 minute wait for my food and it was served to my table. The food had a beautiful presentation with lots of food from 4 plantains, 3 pieces of oxtail, rice and beans, and 2 pieces of chicken. It was so filling, meat was so juicy and tender, lots of sauce at the bottom of the plate, rice was warm and soft. The plantains were soft and perfectly sweet and fried. This location offers a place to sit down with tables and chairs rather than only takeout. The cashier is very friendly and will offer recommendations if you need help combing through the menu. The oxtail's officially my favorite along with their jerk chicken (both have very tender meat and generously seasoned). My partner and I ordered a sangria and it's a little dangerous. Oxtail literally falls off the bone. I liked the rice infused with beans too despite not liking beans, because it really all tastes good when you eat it with the gravies and sauces on the meat. Only thing I didn't like was the plantains, but I've never been a fan anyways. Also, the plate was a tad too salty after I kept eating. Jamaican Beef Patty was tasty! Flaky on the outside, savory beef filling with a touch of sweetness from what I think is onion. $18.95 for a plate is a bit on the more expensive end for a fast food/takeout type of chain but don't be fooled! It had a nice heat flavor too. The fried plaintain was stjll so crispy even after 2 hours and its sweetness mellowed out the spice and savoryness. This place has their flavor profile on point as im a cook and look for that balance of flavors when i go out to eat. Ive tried so many restaurants and this is one restaurant that understands flavor profile. I definitely cannot wait to come back to San Jose just for this dish. It was beyond good. I can tell they took their time to make the Đuôi Bò, it's exquisite. The Jerk Chicken had this smokiness to it. The Gravy was deep in flavor, savory, and I can taste some heat from the Bonnet Peppers; it complimented it very well on top of the Peas & Rice. And the Fried Plantains were cooked to perfection. This was probably one of the better or best version of this Dish that I had so far. Yeah, mahn. I was thinking this was going to be a 3.8-4.3 stars, but I give this 4.2/4.3 stars out of 5 stars. Only giving two stars because if you're going to run an establishment, you have to ensure that you have the proper measures in place to make sure that people that are ordering on DoorDash are getting their correct meals. As you can clearly see, I ordered an oxtail meal and was delivered oxtail chicken combo to my door. This is so upsetting. If anyone knows me, I am a true foodie and this is the utter annoyance when trying to get great customer service from a restaurant that claims to be a four - five star (according to yelp). If you didn't have enough oxtail to complete a full order, then deny the order, but don't send someone something that they didn't order that is just rude and inconsiderate. read more
