Drove by it this morning on my way to Destin. Knew I had to try on my way home. Place is intriguing - 3 huge smokers on wheels out front, I mean industrial size. And I pile of wood that suggested serious smoking. As you might expect the place is a little rough. Well, not a little rough, really rough, but the food (proteins) is superb. Everything is ala carte, you can pick and choose your proteins by the pound or rib count. Sides were available but we decided to get the chopped salad. When asked what we wanted I responded with "everything." That ended up being 1/3 pound smoked chicken, smoked pork and brisket, and a 1/2 rack of ribs. Superb flavors that were even enhanced by the three bbq sauces available - spicy, sweet and mustard based. Each sauce was distinctive and flavorful. Salad was only ok. It was big but nothing special. We should have tried some sides. Some looked very good. I saw a loaded potato that turned my head. We ate outside on a picnic table. No music, no table service, no bar ... nothing but good food. If you're looking for real wood smoked Barbecue look no further, these guys are dishing out a variety of meats and sides that will have you licking your chops and sucking your fingers after every bite. The staff here is wonderful and accommodating but the food here is what will having you coming back. This is not your typical roadside bbq restaurant, this is serious bbq - the giant smokers in the parking lot were filled with briskets, pork butts, pork ribs, turkeys and likely a few other things I've failed to mention. I was fortunate to walk up on the pit master after dining here and was given a full tour of the process as he checked on the smokers and refilled the fireboxes. We ordered the brisket, a half of rack of pork ribs and smoked turkey with a side of mac n cheese which was plenty of food for the two of us. All the meats were smoked to perfection and very moist and tender but if I had to pick my favorite it was definitely the turkey and I plan to return to get a few pounds before leaving the area it's that good... read more

Saw a BBQ flag and stopped in for lunch at Back Beach Barbecue. Standard BBQ offerings sold by the pound along with sandwiches and sides. I went with a link of homemade jalapeño cheddar sausage and ¼ pound of brisket with a side of potato salad. The brisket was OK, peppery bark, and lean but a tad "dry" which was helped by some of their BBQ sauce. The jalapeño cheddar sausage was underwhelming, weak flavor, poor grind. Served with your choice of sauce. I went Smokey and sweet. The pulled pork sandwich was also free of sauce and you can choose your own. Came on your basic burger bun. The Mac and cheese was pretty good. It was creamy, maybe a tiny bit too creamy but still good. The coleslaw was too thick, not chopped up enough and it was a little bitter. That could be a taste preference thing. Some might like it. The restaurant gives an almost deli feel in the way you order and rustic vibe both inside and out. The food was good but honestly not the most amazing. That's not to say it was bad, not at all. It's might be the best in PCB, but I'm still new here so only time will tell. read more

Went to Back Beach on a Saturday evening--really enjoyed our food experience. I got a brisket sandwich and a buddy of mine got the loaded BBQ potato. Both were fantastic. Get the brisket. I found this spot on yelp in a town I'm not familiar with, and honestly I had low expectations because touristy areas usually means -meh- food. The ladies behind the counter were hilarious and so so helpful. After asking what's good I was directed to the brisket and handed a little sample piece. An order of brisket (half lean half fatty), pulled pork, some Mac n cheese, and a loaded potato later... It was the best bbq brisket I've had in a very very long time, if not ever. Granted, I've never lived in an area where brisket is "the" bbq, so I can't really compare to say.... Texas, but good grief. The pulled pork was also good, but the brisket was better. The Mac and cheese hit the carby spot; not mind-blowing, but I will forgive them for that. The baked potato was almost the size of my head and loaded with sour cream and toppings. My family decided to try this place after a few people recommended it. I went in excited to eat some good bbq, but was disappointed in the end. My wife and I usually just get a bunch of the meats to try a new place out. We got brisket, pulled pork and chicken. The brisket was so dry that it was hard to eat. If you added sauce it helped slightly, even though none of the 5 in our group really liked any of the 3 sauces. The pork was ok, it was at least moist and tender but was very under seasoned. The chicken was slightly below average as well, being under seasoned. All of the meats were bland and under smoked also. My brother tried turkey and let me have a slice, very dry and bland. My parents and brother tried the Mac and cheese, I still don't understand why they served it to them. First off, it looked like cheese soup with noodles in it, on top of that it was cold. Not cool but cold. Overall, one of the worst bbq spots I've ever encountered. I don't know how this place gets such good ratings and stays in business serving food like we had. We ordered two pounds of Carolina pulled pork, a cup of Carolina collards, and a quart of baked beans. My husband said it was easy to order and the food came out quickly. The lady gave us different sauces to try as well, which I liked doing while I ate the pulled pork. The pork taste very strange. The potato salad was undercooked. The potatoes were not soft. they were hard no flavor. The baked beans which used to have a great taste with all spice is no longer what they used to be. They were also firm and the spices were not up to par. We're on vacation this week and wanted dinner in so we searched Door Dash for BBQ and found Back Beach Barbecue. I'm from NC and we are known for our barbecue. Back Beach did not disappoint! We each ordered brisket and I also got the jalapeño sausage. My boyfriend got the baked beans & banana pudding as well. The brisket was phenomenal. It was well cooked, the bark was delicious & juicy. No sauce is needed at all. The brisket alone is the reason for the 4 stars. Per my boyfriend, the beans lacked flavor and needed more seasoning; the banana pudding was ok. I got the Carolina Mustard sauce and it definitely was not like what I'm use to in the Carolinas. I'd still recommend their bbq to anyone in the area. read more
