If you're planning on getting a bagel, the earlier, the better the chances are you'll get one! Bf has gone on one or two occasions and the bagels were sold out by 11am! The website could use an overhaul- the menu online is just a picture of their menu and it's hard to read because the chalk is faint/glare. We only come to BEB because it's the closest bagel shop to us. That being said, the bagels are good but not great. I like to get bagel sandwiches. This might only be a place for early risers. I've been here twice, the first time they closed half an hour early because they had run out of bagels - we tried to order something else because the door wasn't locked or anything but they kicked us out telling us they were out of everything. Tried again a second time (arrived an hour prior to closing) they had already picked up all the chairs and were getting ready to shut down. Ordered two bagels one was great (according to husband but cold) I ordered the lox but didn't feel safe eating it because of the coloring of the lox I tried to eat the bagel on its own without the lox but the flavor was really bad so I chose not to risk it and ended up throwing it out. Might try this place one more time but might stick to ordering just the bagel on its own - not a bagel sandwich and also only on days when I wake up early. read more

I want to ensure that the beautiful ladies Athena, Sam, and I cannot remember the third lady's name, but they are all so sweet and lovely, and they get noticed for being so extraordinary. Every time I come here, they welcome me with a smile. I feel these ladies work very hard and have excellent customer service when these ladies are working. I was here a few days ago and a gentleman made me the WORST smoothie I have ever had. He made me a cup of cold soup it felt. These ladies ALWAYS make me a great smoothie. I've given Back East Bagels more than enough chances at this point. The coffee is fine, but every single time I've ordered a lox bagel, it's been made wrong. Last time i received just a few specks of chopped salmon. But today was the last straw. The salmon wasn't even fresh. It was brown, tasted off, and honestly shouldn't have been served. I really wanted to like this place, but the consistent mistakes and poor quality have made it hard to justify coming back. Would not recommend. read more

Service was the worst ever - we had placed a large order in advance to be picked Up at 9 am for a special event it was bagged and ready to go but when we gave our name the girl said doesn't matter you have to go stand In line with every one else's. 40 minutes later we were handed Our bag and late for event. Bagels are Good but no better than any other so why would I want to go back - several other rude comments were made obviously they don't know how to treat a customer - we won't be back and will def share with family and friends as well. The service was shitty due to this policy they have with not allowing you to make purchases until the bagels were "on the wall". It was explained to me by the manager that this was the owners rules because they want to make sure the bagels were hot before you place an order? Me making a order does not hinder the bagels temperature, most establishments allow you to pay for your order, then they put your ticket in line for the order, you wait for the food to cook, they fill your order with hot food and lastly call you up to take it. This is very standard practice. Places like Olive Garden wouldn't say "Sorry, the pasta isn't fully cooked, we can't take your order" or McDonalds refusing people for not having fries fully cooked. When we heard what bagels were being baked in the oven I went up to the counter to put my order in and the man at the counter refused (a 2nd time) because he didn't know what was going on the wall. He said it was going to be 7 more minutes. I then said "Your baker just came out and said what is being baked, by the time I put in this order the bagels will be out because it's at least 12 different bagels" he then lost his cool, yelled at me and my colleague in front of customers saying "I can't take your order because there are no bagels on the wall, we will be backed up, what do you not understand about that?!?!" We then left and decided to spend the $75 worth of food to feed our coworkers somewhere else. Bagels are good but service piss poor, change your policies and teach your coworkers to not be shitty. read more

Before you order a bagel sandwich here, know there isn't a fryer or stove top or anything in the "kitchen"... just 3 microwaves. I didn't see how the bacon was cooked, but it was placed on top of the eggs which were poured from a pitcher into small plastic containers and microwaved over and over until they're "cooked". Idk, as someone from "back east" I was just totally shocked to see that. And it was pretty gross looking when I opened the sandwich, couldn't even eat the eggs. And the bacon looked pretty gnarly too But we waited 20+ minutes to order and another 10 for the sandwiches and they were just no good for $8 a piece. Cute little spot. Decor on walls is cool. Bagels are good, I love that they make them in-house along with the cream cheese. If you get cream cheese on your bagel sandwich though I would definitely ask for extra. They put so little I thought that they forgot to put it. Pretty small area but still room to sit down. I originally came because I was looking for a place to do some work. They do not have wifi available. Which would not be a problem but the service in that area is not great so you can't even use data because nothing will load. I tried to get some work done on my computer but had to leave because nothing was loading. Everything else was good I would go back for the bagels but not to sit down and work on stuff. read more

We love to support local businesses and came to this restaurant often, but the customer service has gotten really bad. You pretty much get ignored until/if someone decides to acknowledge you. They make you wait in line for pickup orders, and God forbid you actually go to the "Pick up" area....was rudely told to go stand in line ....ridiculous. We won't be going back. read more

Bagels are great but WHY do they drench the bagels in butter. The butter is always DRIPPING off the bagels in excess to where you can't even eat it. The bread gets mushy because it's wet and soggy. And everyone I come in I ask for light butter and they always have to remake it Becuase they drench it. Today I asked for light butter, they gave me a bagel that had so much butter on it. It's hard to find a good bagel shop in Phoenix, but this is my go-to place. in Tempe. It's a super small bagel shop that has a good variety of bagels with spread and breakfast sandwiches. We used to have a bakery specializing in NY Style Bagels when we lived in Isla Mujeres. So when I saw Back East Bagels, I was intrigued. I asked if they boiled them before they baked them. They do not but they bake them in a steam injection oven. I ordered a salt bagel as is, a BST (bacon spinach & tomato) on a plain bagel with mayo & avocado and a caramel latte iced coffee. The bagels were fresh (no need to toast them) and had just the right amount of chewiness. The BST was a little messy but delicious and the iced coffee was great. The staff is friendly and the decor is fun. When in Tempe, I would definitely come back to Back East Bagels. read more

So look. If you like this place, that's cool. I'm not looking to discredit what they're doing in here, just giving my point of view. I ordered a bacon egg and cheese breakfast bagel. 1. The egg was microwaved 2. The bacon was microwaved inside the egg 3. I had to take my order back up there because there were literally 2 pieces of bacon. 4. The bagel is tiny at that. Smaller than something you'd get at Einstein So for the cost of a pack of bagels and a pack of bacon plus a 2 dollar tip, I got something I would consider extremely mediocre. I'm also from the east coast. So in a deli/bagel shop, eggs and bacon are cooked on a flat top, you can smell it from the street. I'll stick to plain bagels if I ever come back read more

Okay, so I'm not going to review the traditional bagels that they have here which is where the majority of the reviews are coming from. People that have been following along with my reviews know that I'm from NYC and I do love my bagels. But decided to go in a different direction this time around... I got their bagel dog. It's this oddly magical creation that utilizes the bagel dough and wraps it around a generic ass hotdog. Then, they throw cheese on that ho just for added measure. It was so damn good... Maybe I was just high, or super hungry. But I loved it so much I went back for another one after finishing it on the way to my car, I shit you not. Their mustard was also really good. They paired so well together. Will FOR SURE be back just for this thing. It better still be on the menu when I get there, too.... read more

My family went out for bagels at about 9:30 am, and an entire sports team came in right before us leaving almost nothing to choose from. However, they did have my personal favorite flavor left - an egg bagel. I've had many egg bagels in my day and to be honestly this bagel just didn't meet my expectations. The bagel was borderline almost flakey, more bread-like. Maybe it was just that batch I'm not sure. Now the cream cheese was very good! I had the jalapeño cheddar cream cheese and it definitely had a good kick! The restaurant could use a couple touch ups here and there. The decor is almost nonsensical, back east bagels implies the east coast probably New York yet there are Arizona license plates all over the wall and a chalkboard sign. Just doesn't seem to flow. This store is a nice place for a quick eat - but there are better bagels in town! read more

I travel far to visit this place and I used to come here for their jalapeño bagels and the cream cheese with jalapeño and cheese and the last two times I came the bagels are 1/2 the size they use to be and the texture and flavor of the bagels has changed. I was disappointed the last two times I came here. They had tajin and red pepper chili flakes, this fusion was not on point. I am also sad the quality and texture has changed plus two bagels equal the size you use to get. I am not sure I will be coming back. Ever just crave a bagel sandwich? That's what I was doing and remembered seeing Back East Bagels when in the area so off I went. It was around 10ish on a Saturday and there was a line, but it went quickly. After checking out the menu I went with a Turkey Tempe on a Green Chili Cheddar Bagel. It came with sliced turkey meat, chive cream cheese, a spring mix, tomato and cucumber. This was great tasting! So dang good. Next time I will had some avocado to the sandwich. Delicious food! The bagels are fresh and the cookies are so good. They stop making new bagels after 10/11a so you get what you get at some point. I like their lox sandwiches and their breakfast bagels. I always add cream cheese but you have to specifically say to put it in both sides otherwise it's kind of a pathetic addition and the sandwich stays on the dry side. But, they see good about accommodating your requests. read more
