Had an admin day hurray. Cinnamon bun croissant - super sweet but taking my time while drinking black coffee works pairs very well. I think the pastry in the second one was chipotle chicken, flaky and to me just a little too salty, but I think locals will like it. Kouign-amann - haven't had it yet because I was pretty full, but super underrated pastry that is always a win. I always want to support small, local businesses with 5 stars whenever possible and wish them nothing but success. It's hard out there! That being said, my rating is 3.5 for Buttered Up Bakery, at this Mesa bakery location. This is one of their locations and functions as the main production bakery with a small amount of seating. Best for take away or a casual meal per the website. They also say that you can ask for free sourdough starter and a tour of the bakery. That is really cool, but I didn't do either. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Since this location operates as a functional production bakery, the emphasis is not on being cute, it's tucked away in the back of an industrial park and is very "office chic". Like there's no question you're in an office/ work setting. And that makes sense for where they bake all the things, it's no frills and functional.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I'm basing my review on a couple things- I really didn't like my coffee (and it was too pricey at 6.25, to not like the flavors at all). Either offer better coffee options or drop the price. And even though people rave about the croissants and dough texture, I thought it was "okay". I can see the lamination of the croissant but it wasn't as flakey or crisp as I would expect, a bit dough-y in the center. The main positives here is that breakfast sandwich is huge! Almost takes up the entire size of the to go box. Which at $10.99 price point, glad it's substantial. And the baker who helped me was really friendly and wished me a beautiful day. I'd say that if you find yourself nearby (like I was and found it on the map), or in this business park already and you want baked goods, coming here makes sense. The rating on goggle is 4.7 and here it's 4 (far less reviewers here) so people really like this place. Maybe there are other things I should have tried to get a better taste of what they can do, but for me today it was just ok. If I find myself near one of their other locations I would try something else, maybe the Kouign Amann, people like that in other reviews. read more

My friend and I stopped by Buttered Up Bakery to pick up breakfast. The bakery is not visible from the street because it's tucked away in the corner of an industrial business park. The bakery has an assortment of pastries, sandwiches, and pizza. We were helped by Steven (who is one of the co-owners). He was extremely nice and personable! He explained some of the items and made suggestions. I ordered a Kouign Amann. I've never even heard of this pastry, but it's one of my friend's favorites so I decided to give it a try. We ordered our food to go, but there is a small dining area down the hallway from the ordering counter. The Kouign Amann was so flaky, buttery, sticky, and sweet! It was a lot more filling than I expected because it had so many layers. Parts of the edges were crispy while the inside was soft and pillowy. I really enjoyed it! The next time I visit my friend in Phoenix, I will be requesting another visit to Buttered Up Bakery! read more

Tried out Buttered Up Bakery for the first time and it didn't quite hit the mark for me. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's tucked back in a little unassuming industrial area. It's definitely more casual and basic. I'm not sure I'd hang out, but ample seating if you wanted to meet with a friend or get some work done[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. They have a generous line up of savory and sweet pastries and offerings including sandwiches, pasta and much more. I went with the mini pie trio, with the breakfast egg and bacon and the spinach and feta. They were both tasty and definitely a great option and perfect to share if you just want a little snack or indulge in all three! I also liked the ability to be able to try difference flavors. They are more bread heavy, but still tasty and warmed up upon ordering. For my sweet tooth I got the cinnamon roll croissant. This did not hit the mark for me. Far too much icing and honestly I'm not really an icing person in general, I prefer a cream cheese frosting so I suppose that's on me. The whole thing was just too sweet. I'd opt for a different pastry on my next visit. Lastly a cold brew, which honestly seemed light hot coffee poured over ice. Everything I've tried here has been absolutely amazing? I've gotten the bacon egg and cheese croissant sandwich, and both mini almond and chocolate croissants. The sandwich is so good! This place is a hidden gem. I ordered a cheddar, sausage, and cheese breakfast sandwich and it was delicious in every way. The sandwich had a flaky crust and the egg was fluffy. The size of the sandwich itself was very generous and the food was ready within a couple minutes of ordering. The employees are extremely friendly and even shared some of their sourdough starter with me as well as a helpful guide after I had expressed interest in baking my own bread. I've ordered multiple different croissants from this little bakery, and I'm always happy! The grilled cheese is so incredibly cheesy and tasty, but my favorites are the Kouign-amann and the creme brulee. But don't overlook the cinnamon roll or the feta spinach! I have yet to visit the bakery, but I hope to soon. I usually have to order this treat while I'm at work. The preparation is always speedy, but quality is never lacking. So, I really think this place(as a company) seems to be solid. This is kind of a distribution center Cafe tucked back in a business park. We stopped in to check it out because there was only one review, but it seemed so promising. Our experience was kind of sweet. A young man named Ken kindly greeted us. Sweetly told us about a few of the items, and his thoughts on them, etc.... We ended up trying their pastry pocket pies(Lentil curry&spinach feta), and their custom pop tart! All were delicious and unique. I think this spot will only get better as time goes on, but it's still in its infancy! We'll definitely be back to try their croissant pizza and other items!! Beware when pre-ordering online. I received an email from Buttered up Bakery before the holidays offering a pre-order on Mini Pies Trio that would be ready for pick up Dec 22, 23 or 24. I put in an order for 2 of the sets, received confirmation on the order and Dec 23 pickup date and was charged for my order. On the 23rd, I went to the Scottsdale and T-Bird location as directed. First, I was told that they had only gotten one order for me from whoever does the online. 2nd, I was told that they didn't have the 3 mini pies that I had ordered 10 days earlier and paid for. They only had 1 - the cherry pie. In fact, I was told that they hadn't had the pecan pie for over a week. They held up what looked like a bag with 1 mini cherry pie and 2 plain cheesecakes (or something like that). I guess I was just supposed to accept a very poor substitution instead of what was advertised and then only 1 of 2 orders. I told them I would not accept what they were offering and to refund all my money. I was then told that they couldn't do the refund, but had to contact "someone" to do it and they would contact me when they got that done. AT no time was I given any kind of apology for the mess and I am still waiting for someone to contact me and to get my refund. I don't understand why they didn't contact me before I went there when they knew a week earlier that they didn't have the pies that I ordered. They obviously knew how many pre-orders they had taken and had my email address since they sent me a confirmation of my order on the day I made it. They also charged my account on that date. I've wanted to try this place for a while. Finally made it over a week ago and it was wonderful. Tho small, it's huge on high quality baked goods. And great iced coffee. I enjoyed it so much, my son and I went there again today and tried the breakfast sandwiches. No exaggerating, best breakfast sandwich I've ever had. I ordered the avocado egg sandwich and added bacon. The croissant bread - perfectly buttered and flaky - blended with the fluffy eggs, fresh avocado, some kind of spread and the right amount of bacon - it was simply divine. They are in the process of changing the name from Squarz Bakery so I just posted the same review on its site. I can't recommend this place more - it's a delicious neighborhood gem! Do not pass this place up if you love a croissant. The warmest, most flaky, buttery, deliciousness i've ever had in arizona. I took my boyfriend here for his birthday and a nice man took our orders at the front. We got the Chocolate Croissant, Almond croissant, and 3 mini pies- 2 bacon and egg, 1 chicken pot pie. We had tried to order coffee as well but unfortunately their espresso machine was not in office today. The Chocolate and Almond Croissants came out warm, flaky, and oh-so delicious. This place is a bit difficult to find but is SO worth it! My husband and I live in Sun City and had an appointment in Mesa. When we were done, we were both hungry. My husband googled "breakfast near me" and Buttered Up Bakery came up. And am I glad it did. The food is absolutely amazing. I had the mini egg and bacon pie, which is more like a puff pastry sandwich. My husband had the Sausage Gravy sandwich which was equally delicious. If you like pastries, this is the place for you. We tried the chocolate croissant and a Kouign Amann which is a buttery puff pastry with caramelized sugar. Both of these were decadent. Gabriel was very welcoming and answered all of our questions. This location is 42 miles from home and as I told Gabriel, I will drive across the valley to visit them again. They actually have 3 locations: Mesa, Scottsdale and Tempe.
