Came in early on a Wednesday morning and thought the storefront and inside the bakery was very cute. Maybe it was too early, but I did notice that it was a bit dim inside. I could barely see the pastries in the case. No worries though, I saw what I came in for. Purchased a French baguette for $3.70. Beyond amazed at the price. Excited to have some with my coffee, I ripped off a piece almost immediately and noticed the nice crust on the outside. 5 stars for the crust!! As for the flavor, it seemed a little flat. It was lacking some of the wheaty-tangy flavor you would get from a longer prove/fermentation. The inside of it was also missing all those nice deep pockets you see in a French baguette. Overall, not a bad baguette, but not one that you yearn for. I'd like to mention the young lady Annabel I had the privilege of meeting outside of the bakery. Heard about their croissants from a friend and had to try while I was in the neighborhood. This bakery has so many goodies. The croissants are my favorite and just perfect. They had the crunchy, flaky outside while being soft and buttery inside. This is now my favorite place to get a croissant. Tried the ham and cheese today and it was good and still flaky, even after being heated. I've had their plain ones too. Next time, I'll try their almond ones. I absolutely adore the almond croissant! The pastry is large and topped with sliced almonds as well as powdered sugar. The filling is soft and sweet. The breading pulls apart so nicely. - While at the bakery, you can use the restroom located in the Carlton Hotel if you are a patron of the bakery. The Carlton just repainted and decorated the lobby. It looks fantastic! - The wall behind the check-in desk was hand -painted by a local artist and features all local plants and woodland creatures. I'm a huge fan of the color green they chose. Came here for breakfast today. I was anticipating this visit all last night! Still stellar in their pastries. However this morning, we were disappointed they sold out of their raspberry and white chocolate scones - and it's only 9:30am!!! We did enjoy the almond croissant and morning bun. Also bought some pastries for friends at home. The kitchen is undergoing remodeling right now and they hope it will be done by the end of the year. Oh My God I have found what my life has been missing: MORNING BUNS! I have never known about the existence of these cinnamony bundles of joy until I visited Back Porch Bakery and thought hey cinnamon buns made with croissant dough does sound pretty good. PRETTY GOOD IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT! As someone who thinks the frosting on cinnamon buns is too sweet and croissants are too flaky/messy... this was... perfect. One of my favorite bakeries on the Central Coast. I've been enjoying these treats since they opened the bakery on Prado Lane in SLO, just outside the climbing gym we frequented. Now both have grown and moved on to bigger and better things, including, for BPB, an ever expanding menu of wonderful baked treats and beverages to go with them. Although I've been to the Central Coast over 30 times, I've always drive by but never stopped in Atascadero. However, being a huge fan of Back Porch Bakery items that I always order for pickup at the SLO Prado location, I decided to stop at their Atascadero storefront location on the way down. It is attached/part of the hotel Carleton Hotel with tables inside, outside, and the area leading up to the hotel lobby, it didn't feel crowded even for a Sunday morning. So many options to choose but I still couldn't resist my go-to, the spinach feta croissant to eat there and to go along with those baguettes that I didn't have to pre-order 48 hours. read more

All the folks working were super friendly and helpful. The location was cute and lots of space to sit inside and also outside. They had some doggy bowls outside for water too. Loved the witty quotes of the pastry corner. I ordered a breakfast bun, a blueberry muffin and apple fritter like pastry. All of them were very delicious and not super sweet. A nice little bakery in downtown area that's worth a try if you happen to be there. We stayed a night in town and decided to find a bakery nearby for breakfast prior to hitting up the wineries. This bakery has pretty high ratings and was opened so we decided to check it out. No designated parking lot but plenty of street parking. On a Sunday morning, it's pretty empty so service was efficient. They have bar seating along the windows and some table seating. We ordered the almond croissant, the oatmeal cookie and 2 lattes, one being decaffeinated. The lattes were average, nothing to write home about. We stopped at another coffee shop the day before at Paso Robles and the latte we ordered was fantastic. The oatmeal cookie was too hard, I had some jaw pain after chewing on the cookie. The almond croissant was pretty good, flakey and had a reasonable amount of almond paste. I would recommend getting that if you happen to stop by this bakery. Cost was very reasonable, especially the latte price. It's a solid breakfast spot for pastries. read more

Running errands on Saturday morning, and stopped in to try it out. Selected the ham and cheese croissant, chocolate French toast muffin and apple popover. The croissant was a just ok, not much ham and cheese in there... the muffin was amazing however! The popover was good too. The counter folks were really pleasant and quick and it was a casual coffee house vibe inside. I will try the coffee next time. Absolutely, positively delicious. The gf and I (and pooch) got a couple of items and a coffee, and we were in Hog Heaven. They didn't have much at 1230pm (apparently, you have to get here early), but what they had was awesome. The cheese danish was incredible and so well made, and the almond croissant was wonderful flakey and buttery. The gf had a decaf latte, and she was really happy with it. I just went to the bakery for the first time and have been wanting to go for a long time. I was excited to go, but disappointed with the young man that worked there this morning. 11-16-25. He didn't seem like he wanted to be there and hurried me along. No smile at all until it was time for me to pay and leave a tip. That is when he actually smiled and became friendly all of a sudden. As soon as he was done he went right to his phone over the display case. Once I have a bad first impression I will no longer go back. What a disappointment. I was looking for some bagels to take back to my Airbnb for breakfast, lox and cream cheese waiting. The bagel place I was planning on visiting was closed, as are lots of shops in the area on Tuesdays. I went back to Yelp and found this place. It's a bit hard to find, as it is in the Carlton hotel, bottom floor, facing the street, with a tree-obscured sign out front. Cute little shop, with a smallish selection of breads and such. They had half a dozen plain bagels, and a few everything. I cleaned them out, also taking a couple of their chocolate croissants. I found the croissants to be very good. I liked the bagels too, but I'm not sure if they should be considered "bagels". They were very soft, and remained that way even after a couple of days. The crumb was airy and full of large pockets, unlike any bagel I've had. The chew was nice enough, as was the flavor, but there was something missing. These were more bagel-shaped bread things, lacking the glisten from a good bagel boil. Four stars because, even though the stuff was good, I've had better elsewhere. My husband devoured the Almond Croissant I got at The Porch in Santa Margarita, so I needed to resupply. I had been hankering to visit the Back Porch Bakery for awhile, since I have been buying their products at Whole Foods in San Luis Obispo. I like their perky little skull pirate logo. Their shop in the Carleton Hotel in Atascadero is very inviting, with a beautiful retro glass door painted with golden letters. It was after lunch, so m any baked goods were gone, but they did have an almond croissant and a pain au chocolate. I also got a loaf of Asiago cheese and pepper bread to enjoy later. The almond croissant was otherworldly, everything you want from a pastry, light dough, flavorful filling accented by the crunchy almonds slices forming the perfect accompaniment to a cup of coffee. Took the loaf of bread home and sliced it up and toasted some to accompany my soup for dinner and it was a surprising treat with just the right amount of cheese and a little bite from the pepper. I shared it with pals who also appreciated it pungent flavor. I just finished the pain au chocolate, which I found a bit tough, since I love light pastry dough! I had their open faced bagel with cream cheese and avocado, it included lettuce and tomato. It was delicious :). The bagel had that lovely chewiness to it and the avocado was perfectly ripe and salted and peppered perfectly. On other visits, I have had their spinach feta croissant, which is to die for and I have had their sweet/spicy bacon sando and the Caprese Ficelle, both super yummy. Solid bakery next to the hotel in DT Atascadero. Im pretty sure the coffee/pastries are sourced from other places so the prices are slightly higher, but this place is still good for the area. There are some decent seating indoors and outdoors. There is also seating in the hallway that connects the bakery and the hotel. I got to try to almond croissant, bfast croissant sandwich, orange poppy seed muffin and the morning bun. The muffin was ok...nothing too special other than the muffin top. Morning bun was excellent. Would recommend this pastry. I love almond croissants so I am bias, but this was also pretty solid. Parking in DT is easy. Street parking with no restrictions or metered parking. read more

This bakery exceeded my expectations for a place out in the middle of Atascadero. Probably really 4.25 stars but 5 stars considering we were kind of in the middle of some random small city. We ordered the French toast muffin, almond croissant, ham and cheese croissant, and spinach and cheese croissant. The spinach and cheese croissant was just normal (like good but nothing to write home about) but we particularly enjoyed the ham and cheese croissant and the French toast muffin! The ham and cheese was balanced in terms bread to filling ratio, and the ham didn't just slide out in one piece like it sometimes does.
