Finally got around to trying this because we were in the mood for pork beans and rice. It was adequate and satisfied the craving. Delicious starchy rice, yucca and pulled pork, salty but tasty - washed down with Tangerine Juice. I think there were 6 tables and 1 reserved for games. Lechon Asado. There is no better way to go. This dish consists of perfectly cooked pork, deliciously seasoned black beans, rice, and yuca. They bring bread to accompany the dish also. If you are feeling brave, ask for the hidden spicy green sauce. Very spicy, but so good. read more

Back to Cuba is a tiny little restaurant that's smushed between a few other places. It's not really well lit at night, and I wasn't sure if my Uber driver was dropping me off at the right place. Thankfully, it was and I was able to indulge in Nashville's Cuban food. You order at the counter, which isn't really clear when you walk in. Their menu is handwritten on some chalkboards on the walls. I ordered a Cuban sandwich and some tostones. The food came out within 10 minutes and I was able to start eating. The Cuban sandwich was crisp on the outside, and then juicy on the inside. The meat was flavorful and I was very happy with this choice. The tostones were okay, nothing to really rave about. I've definitely had better - these tasted a little too sweet compared to what I'm used to when I order them. There's a $10 credit card minimum - I was able to hit that with my cuban sandwich and tostones. You pay at the register when you're ready to go. I'm sure when it's busy that causes some confusion considering the lines for ordering and paying would wind up intertwining a little. read more

I don't often go travelling but when I do, I typically expect my friends to take me to wonderful and delicious places. My friend had been dying to try this spot and so we went for an early lunch, and I became a believer. The food here was actually pretty spot on, I had the fish and I really liked the flavor that was generated in the dish. The coffee was also off the hook, and it had me feeling good all day. At 11am on a Saturday it was actually perfect timing because it was empty when we got there so we could have an actual conversation and chill. This spot is very cute and wonderful, if I am ever back in town I look forward to coming back to eat here. read more

First Cuban restaurant that I've been to in Nashville. I left so full! I had the churrasco skirt steak, plantains, rice and beans. I also had Cuban coffee. There was limited seating inside. Everything was delicious and it didn't take very long to make. They even bring you a basket of crunchy and buttered bread. I will definitely be back here again! read more

I've lived in the area for years and yet to have come to Back to Cuba until yesterday. I have no idea why I haven't gone here sooner but regardless I think it was meant to be. Why? Because what I ordered was everything I hoped it would be. Not only the food, but I spoke with the owner for a few minutes and he made the experience even better. He let me know the "do's and don'ts" of the place while cracking a few jokes along the way. He was charming and informative. On to the food: I ordered the grilled chicken and onions. It came with white rice, a huge helping of black beans, succulent plantains, and a huge bag of toasted bread. It all made sense to me while eating it. The seasoning was perfect. That for me does it when I don't have to have any condiments or even salt. I also ordered the chicken and beef empanadas. They are HUGE. I personally ate the chicken and gifted the beef to my boss (had to butter her up). It had enough spice to counter the richness of the fried empanada shell. I'll be back soon, especially for dinner. He invited me to come back with a few friends, bring a bottle of wine, and play dominoes. All while enjoying the Cuban fare and listening to records spin. What more could I ask for? read more

I'm a pretty huge fan of hole in the wall spots. Back to Cuba felt like rolling the dice as we pulled into the gas station/strip mall parking lot. Thankfully, it was the right gamble. My first love, honestly, truly. Literally, before Salsa, this was the only place my dad and I could go to get true, authentic Caribbean food. I always, ALWAYS, get the pechuga de pollo... the plantains are exquisite, the chicken breast is always seasoned perfectly and I love how they top it with onions. I wanted to like this. I need to accept the fact that Nashville is not a foodie town. Good ethnic food here is hard to come by (although not impossible: see e.g. Nolensville Rd). A lot of people on Yelp would find peace and loose a lot of bad attitude if they accepted this as well. I appreciated the yerba mate soda. Finally, after driving by everyday for about 2 years on-and-off from/to work, decided to try Back To Cuba. My first Cuban culinary experience was earlier this year in Miami, so I was hooked. Going in, I already knew not to compare to Miami, I kept an open-mind and this review is solely based on Back to Cuba. The place is small, 8 small tables, plus some bistro seating outdoors. Its in a small shopping strip attached to a gas station. Getting parking and going in-and-out can be challenging. We went in around 11:30, luckily not too busy. The menu is displayed on their wall, and can be a little confusing/overwhelming. We just asked what they recommended and we went with that. I had the pork roast plate and my husband has the cuban sandwich with fries. We also tried their chicken empanada. The roast pork could have used a bit more flavor, and maybe some spice/acidic. I really wished I could've substitute the yuca for plantains. The rice and beans were just average. The cubano was extra crispy. And the pork was chewy and dry, I couldn't even eat it. Also lacked some spice/acidic. Fries were good, and the empanada was as well. I definitely want to give it another try, perhaps try something different. Me and the wife heard great reviews on this place but the experience wasn't all that it was cut out to be. Don't get me wrong, the food is great but the service was horrible!! And the man whom I assume is the owner is just plain hateful. We had 2 Cuban sandwiches and 2 Cuban coffees. Sandwiches came before the drinks and they forgot our order of flan. I spent most of my life as a Florida native so I have had my share of great Cuban food. Back to Cuba is OK but not great as many have mentioned. The Cuban sandwiches lack enough pork, enough fat on the pork, and the authentic hint of sour orange. The bread could be better as well. The other menu items are OK but again lack soul and authenticity. That being said the food is not bad just not great. This is the only Cuban place I know of in town and it is nice to go and be reminded of home. I think they have some room for improvement but overall it is a good place to get lunch. read more

If you have ever eaten anything traditionally Cuban you would know just by walking in that this place is 100% Mexican cuisine with a Cuban name next to it. Never have I been so utterly disappointed by a meal. I asked for a Pan con bistec. Which traditionally used marinated flank steak and put on warm fresh Cuban bread with ketchup,mayo, lettuce,tomatoes,piknik potato sticks and a nice and tender marinated flank steak. What I was greeted with was a total abomination that is a slap in the face to not only a pan con bistec but to the Cuban people as a whole. What I got was a piece of flavorless shoe leather on TORTA BREAD!!!!!! Not Cuban bread. The veggies were soggy and definitely not fresh at all. I feel bad for anyone who has never tried Authentic Cuban food and think this bio hazardous waste dumpster fire of a place is what you have to go by because this is simply not it. NOT EVEN CLOSE!!! Come to Miami with that and try to pass it off as "authentic" will get you hung in the middle of the street. This place is an abomination to Cuban food and is downright disrespectful and should just board up and change to what they're really good at, cooking Mexican food. read more

My fish was undercooked and completely covered in lemon butter, which also smothered my salad since it was served on the same plate. They even burnt the rice! It was rock hard. We could taste the frost bite on the bread they served. My date's meal was equally as disappointing. A terrible meal for 2 for $35 was all I got. I hope they change their ways. read more
