The only reason it's not five was because of the hiccup in service I experienced 2 times now. The first hiccup is why minuses one. I ordered a bunch of stuff and 2 breakfast sandwiches were among the items. I waited for them patiently, and I got called up that my order was ready. Headed up to counter, the girl gave me one sandwich I asked about the other and if I should keep my number. She proceeds to tell me that I only ordered one sandwich which I know I ordered two and paid for them and tells me that I need to be rung up and pay again. I said no, I paid for it already. I proceeded to look for my receipt. She kept telling me there was only one sandwich on the list. I was looking for my receipt still to prove to her that I bought two, when finally a gentleman came up and said there was two sandwiches on the ticket. I proceeded to wait longer for the second sandwich.... The thing is, I don't remember anyone apologizing for the confusion or the extra wait. I would have just appreciated the acknowledgment!! Other than that I must say the staff is usually friendly and the baked goods alone get 5+ stars!!! The breakfast sandwich and the roasted mushroom sandwich are probably two of the best things I've eaten in a long time!!! they are perfection and the perfect breakfast, snack or lunch!!! Hands down the breakfast sandwich is the best breakfast sandwich I've ever eaten and it checks all the boxes. Soft fluffy warm bread, but good enough to hold everything together, perfect yolky egg, generous amount and tasty, warm, breakfast sausage patty, and some arugula and frisee lettuce. I taste a little acidic element, but didn't look at the whole sandwich description. All I know is it's just a great sandwich !!!! We also liked the baguette sandwich a lot. It's simple ingredients but done well. It's usually busy and parking can be tricky. Especially if a yoga class is going on in a nearby establishment. It's because twice I've seen people coming out of somewhere with yoga mats and then the parking lot clears. There's seating downstairs and upstairs. I've only been downstairs, but it seems nice. I've been going to the San Mateo location awhile, but I drive the extra 7 minutes now to come to this location for the sandwiches. Hoping San Mateo eventually can expand and do the other menu items.

Good place for brunch in Burlingame. Spacious upstairs for dine in. Pastries and bread seem to sell out earlier in the day; we arrived around 12:30pm Sunday and had limited options. This was fine for us because we mainly came for brunch. Everyone enjoyed their food. We tried the salmon pragel, labne egg, and broccoli rabe grilled cheese. Drinks were okay, I wouldn't really go here for them. We didn't mind our espresso tonic and san mateo fogs. Friendly staff!

My family and I came here on a Saturday morning and there was a line out the door. There are so many breakfast choices; pastries (sweet and savory), desserts, breakfast sandwiches and coffee options. The breakfast sandwich was fresh and flavorful. My husband and I shared it and really enjoyed it. The coffee was okay. I wouldn't come here just for coffee but adding the sandwiches is tempting enough to come back. We sat upstairs and while it was a nice open space, it was really warm. I'd recommend sitting outside or downstairs.

Once again, we had an amazing time at Backhaus. Their pastries are so delicious and unique. I love them. We were lucky to find a table on a busy Sunday. I love that it's dog friendly too. The ambience is really cool. We got so many different pastries as you can see from my pictures and we enjoyed all of them.

I've honestly never been to the bakery myself (my bestie picks them up for me) but these pastries are to die for. They are perfectly balanced and have the right amount of sweet/tartness. I loved the passionfruit pastry they currently have and the savory potato focaccia. Their scones are perfectly dense and moist at the same time. The raspberry pistachio croissant had just the right amount of filling, not too much raspberry. I also had a tomato danish from them last year that I can't stop thinking about. Will definitely be back for more!

Such unique sweet and savory treats! Luckily did not have to wait in a long line as someone brought these in. The pistachio and raspberry croissant is so different and very tasty. Not too sweet at all. The everything cream cheese puff was also super savory and felt like eating an everything bagel with cream cheese but with the fluffy puff.

Cute place with fresh and homemade bread/pastries. Would I wait in line for it again? Probably not. The service is fast and friendly. It gets pretty busy so they can run out of what you want and it can be challenging to find a table. Make sure to go upstairs! The location is prime, but difficult to find parking as it's on a heavy traffic street. The mini chocolate loaf was the perfect amount of sweetness. It's definitely worth a try, but maybe too sweet to buy a loaf to take home. I did buy a loaf of sourdough for home, though! I also ordered the iced cinnamon coffee which is not on their regular menu. It's on a small list of special drinks posted by the cashier. The raspberry pistachio croissant was prettier than it tasted. I was surprised that there was actual raspberry jam and pistachio inside because no one posted a picture of the inside! LOL! The breakfast sandwich was good, but worth the almost $20 price tag? Naaaa. It wasn't even a full meal, just the sandwich. Do bakeries not toast pastries anymore, is that not a thing? I always love a warm pastry and I wish the pastries were warmed up a bit before handed over. Also, the coffee and sandwich came at significantly different times so I couldn't enjoy them together. It's so busy that it didn't feel relaxing, esp when you have people crowding around trying to get your table. There are probably more places you can go for better coffee and warm pastries while not feeling crowded.

Labne Egg, Pistachio Raspberry Croissant, Breakfast Sandwich, & Lemontado

We got scared away by the huge line at the San Mateo location, and arrived here to find a line almost as long. Backhaus is SO popular on Saturdays! Luckily, the weather was perfect and the line moved pretty quickly. The interior had a clean look - minimal decor, lots of natural light. We ordered at the counter and I chose the Lemontado, Labne Egg, and Pistachio Raspberry Croissant. I was handed the croissant right away and went upstairs to the seating area to wait for the rest. Service wasn't the fastest, but still quicker than I expected considering they were slammed. The Lemontado was very interesting, but the combination of citrus and coffee worked here. I didn't see their other seasonal drinks until after I'd ordered, so I wish these were more visibly displayed. The Labne Egg was fantastic! The soft poached egg and labne yogurt went so well with the sourdough toast. But the Pistachio Raspberry Croissant truly rocked my world. The texture of the pastry was perfectly flakey, the raspberry was so jammy, and the pistachio flavor was strong. I can't recommend this enough! My friend also loved his Breakfast Sandwich and Morning Bun. Overall, worth the wait - will be returning!

I'm sad to give 3 star because the quality of their croissant. I mean look at this half-bite croissant, no layers, not airy, almost just a flat piece of dough. Maybe it's their quality control? I don't know. I'm a huuuuge croissant lover and no one deserves to eat a croissant like this. Might as well eat plain white bread. Please do better Backhaus, I used to think you're better than Juniper's.

Backhaus (Burlingame), 261 California Dr, Burlingame, CA94010. Bakeries, Brunch place. Recommended by my son n daughter-in-law. A nice place with fresh homemade pastries and sandwich. It's a 2-storey place with inside and outside seating in a busy location. Parking is street-parking and not too easy to find. As you enter, you're treated to a galore of pastries with nice aroma. You place your order up front, look for a table and food is brought to you. The place is crowded but service was quick and friendly. We had the roasted mushroom sandwich, chocolate croissant and others. Everything was good. The crust of the pastries were particularly good. The only thing is that it's a little on the pricey side, with almost $20 for sandwich (depending on what you order). I would go again if I'm in the area to try other items.

Plain croissant, passionfruit Kouign-amann, speck and egg
    Jessica Z.

Saw this place on a video raving about their plain croissants so had to try it out. Was a little worried because on a Sunday morning at 10:45am, the line was way out the door, but the line moved a lot faster than we expected! Within 10 min, we ordered our food and we're already seated. We tried an array of pastries: -plain croissant: 10/10 one of the best croissants we've had in the bay. it's so flaky on the outside and the inside is fluffy without being too buttery -passionfruit Kouign-amann: wish the bottom was less caramalized (it was a thick layer), but the pastry itself was nice and crispy and went so well with the passionfruit cream -speck and egg breakfast bowl: nice and flaky, but wish the egg were more runny There are a few tables downstairs, but just go upstairs are it is SO spacious. Plenty of seating upstairs even on a weekend which is a nice surprise! Great place to hang out and catch up with friends. We ended up going back in line to grab a plain croissant to go-- it was that memorable!

I woke to a text to check my front porch. My neighbor gifted a box of the freshest most delicious goodies. The picture is after we attacked the goods. Fresh, tasty, did I say fresh? Can't wait to explore myself!

It's always nice to visit Backhaus for some yummy pastries and coffee! Parking in the area is mostly meter or you can find some free 2 hour parking along California Drive if you're lucky! Backhaus has so many variety of pastries for you to try. I also love that they have a self operating elevator if you have a stroller or wheelchair for you to enjoy upstairs where it is a little less busy. I usually come here on a weekday and most of the pastries are still available but the popular ones sell out usually closer to noon so come early! Raspberry Pistachio: So good! First time trying it few days ago. Chocolate croissant: You can't go wrong with ordering one of these too. So crispy and delicious! Seasonal Handpie: If you want something savory this one is the way to go! So delicious and it goes well with my Oat latte.

The San Mateo location runs out of items so early in the day. Is this location the same? If I come around 10-11am on a weekend will there still be a decent selection of items?

I went to San Mateo on a Saturday morning about 0930 and there was some. Went to Burlingame after around 1045 and the selection MUCH thinner, but still about 10 pastry Items to choose from. Still a good stock of fresh breads.

We really enjoyed our dishes - carbonara udon, crispy honey chicken Benedict and the ube pancakes. The carbonara udon was on par with the one we had in Japan. The chicken Benedict was full of flavor and the eggs were cooked to perfection. I've had better ube pancakes in the peninsula but they still tasted good!

We had the chicken croffle and the tom yum croissant. I liked the chicken croffle with how big the fried chicken is, and the sauce it comes with complements the flavors well. It can get heavy after awhile with the sauce. Overall I had a good experience here, good service despite being so busy most of the time. I would come again!

Huge credit to the sweet mother to be working the cashier register. Buttermilk pancake and Milano crepe were fine - both were relatively sizable and tasty. New Orleans benedict was a huge miss. I'm not sure how long my plate was sitting out before it was served, but the English muffin was soggy, the egg was very overcooked/not runny at all, and the hollandaise sauce had developed a noticeable skin. The entire dish was lukewarm at best. Our food came out quickly, so it's obvious Crepevine pre-makes everything and nothing is fresh. As we were leaving, we saw a plate in the kitchen with a giant stack of pre-made crepes on it. Lastly, service was a HUGE disappointment. When we were at the cash register placing our order, the employee NEVER looked at us. Instead, she kept looking around and was very distracted, which is probably why she asked us to repeat ourselves 3 times. Then, in the MIDDLE of our ordering, she turned and started talking to a woman behind us in line. They literally proceeded to have an entire conversation while we were standing there, holding menus in our hand, waiting to finish placing our order. We should have walked out right there. After we sat down, no one ever brought us water. Our food arrived and we still didn't have water, so we had to flag someone down. That person didn't bring anything, so we had to ask another person. Everything - from water to napkins to boxes - needed to be requested multiple times. Not gonna come back again.
