This is by far my favorite bakery so far. Their pastries are unique, eye catching and delicious. The smell of fresh baking ingredients is in the air and many people doing different roles. I ordered their pistachio raspberry croissant which is my favorite. It has a nice outer crunch texture with a jammy and inside. The texture of crunchy pistachios is amazing too. The speck and the egg pastry is also unique with a boiled egg and bacon inside with tiny mustard seeds on top for a tart bite. It's delicious and makes a pretty hardy pastry. I also enjoyed their coffee from ritual which is a plus because not a lot of cafes or bakeries carry ritual around the area. This place is a gem! I also recommend eating upstairs where you can see pastry chefs in the bottom, cooking and cleaning. It's awesome watching their craft and witnessing a great team work. I have to stop reviewing this place because I basically go every weekend! It's just they have new things for me to try so then I wanna say how much I love them! I think this place is ruining me because the food is so good and the service so on top that no other restaurant seems to match them. The newest things we had were the chocolate chip milk bread, which was so good. The pastrami sandwich with the potato chips in it was incredible. Their chocolate chip cookie made me wanna cry. It tasted so delicious. We had a new little savory bread pudding, chive onion--I don't know what it was, but it was like a little muffin and it was really tasty. The ambience and the restaurant is always good but we usually get it to go and they wrap it so nicely for takeout. We got coffee and it was also nice. Dropped in around 11:00 AM on a Friday and had a great experience overall. The space itself is really bright and roomy, featuring two floors of seating with tons of natural light, plus some outdoor tables if you prefer to sit outside. The staff here was super friendly, efficient, and helpful from start to finish. For our to-go haul, we managed to snag one of our absolute favorites, the Everything Croissant Bowl, which always hits the spot. We also grabbed a couple of new items to try later, including the Sauerkraut Pretzel and the Passionfruit Danish cuz I'm a sucker for anything passionfruit. We opted to eat a couple of things there. The breakfast sandwich was super indulgent and enjoyable, featuring a perfectly runny egg. To drink, the Fig Leaf Latte was really nice with a subtle, distinct coco-nutty flavor profile, slightly sweetened and well balanced . There's two Backhaus' situated close to each other, but the Burlingame branch has more seating with an entire second floor and from my own experience, has never been a line in comparison to the San Mateo branch. There are outlets up against wall-seating, but no WiFi and I believe some days are "no laptop" days, so beware. Great breakfast options and delicate pastries. Went around 11/noon, most of the pastries had been sold out. The avocado toast was classic, toasted and seasoned perfectly. The breakfast sandwich was buttery on a brioche bun and a solid option. The only reason it's not five was because of the hiccup in service I experienced 2 times now. The first hiccup is why minuses one. I ordered a bunch of stuff and 2 breakfast sandwiches were among the items. I waited for them patiently, and I got called up that my order was ready. Headed up to counter, the girl gave me one sandwich I asked about the other and if I should keep my number. She proceeds to tell me that I only ordered one sandwich which I know I ordered two and paid for them and tells me that I need to be rung up and pay again. I said no, I paid for it already. I proceeded to look for my receipt. She kept telling me there was only one sandwich on the list. I was looking for my receipt still to prove to her that I bought two, when finally a gentleman came up and said there was two sandwiches on the ticket. I proceeded to wait longer for the second sandwich.... The thing is, I don't remember anyone apologizing for the confusion or the extra wait. I would have just appreciated the acknowledgment!! My family and I came here on a Saturday morning and there was a line out the door. There are so many breakfast choices; pastries (sweet and savory), desserts, breakfast sandwiches and coffee options. The breakfast sandwich was fresh and flavorful. My husband and I shared it and really enjoyed it. The coffee was okay. I wouldn't come here just for coffee but adding the sandwiches is tempting enough to come back. We sat upstairs and while it was a nice open space, it was really warm. It gets pretty busy so they can run out of what you want and it can be challenging to find a table. Make sure to go upstairs! The location is prime, but difficult to find parking as it's on a heavy traffic street. The mini chocolate loaf was the perfect amount of sweetness. It's definitely worth a try, but maybe too sweet to buy a loaf to take home. I did buy a loaf of sourdough for home, though! I also ordered the iced cinnamon coffee which is not on their regular menu. It's on a small list of special drinks posted by the cashier. The raspberry pistachio croissant was prettier than it tasted. I was surprised that there was actual raspberry jam and pistachio inside because no one posted a picture of the inside! LOL! We got scared away by the huge line at the San Mateo location, and arrived here to find a line almost as long. Backhaus is SO popular on Saturdays! Luckily, the weather was perfect and the line moved pretty quickly. The interior had a clean look - minimal decor, lots of natural light. We ordered at the counter and I chose the Lemontado, Labne Egg, and Pistachio Raspberry Croissant. I was handed the croissant right away and went upstairs to the seating area to wait for the rest. Service wasn't the fastest, but still quicker than I expected considering they were slammed. The Lemontado was very interesting, but the combination of citrus and coffee worked here. I didn't see their other seasonal drinks until after I'd ordered, so I wish these were more visibly displayed. The Labne Egg was fantastic! The soft poached egg and labne yogurt went so well with the sourdough toast. But the Pistachio Raspberry Croissant truly rocked my world. The texture of the pastry was perfectly flakey, the raspberry was so jammy, and the pistachio flavor was strong. I can't recommend this enough! Backhaus has so many variety of pastries for you to try. I also love that they have a self operating elevator if you have a stroller or wheelchair for you to enjoy upstairs where it is a little less busy. When we visited it was easy enough to wait a bit and find parking in the lot next door. There are street parking as well. There was a short line out the door, which is to be expected. Service is efficient but still friendly, they take time to explain things should you have questions. They offer cooked breakfast and lunch as well, but as we were there for the bread we ordered a variety, with coffee, and took our tray upstairs, where there is a spacious and inviting dining area. Comfortable and tranquil, it's much better than sitting downstairs where the constant stream of customers makes it noisy and chaotic. The bread - oh the kouign amann is so, so, so good. It's like croissant dough but with some sugar added to the folds, so it has little caramelized bites in it. Yum!!! I ordered the pistachio croissant but was a bit surprised that inside of a filling I got a croissant sliced open with a layer of pistachio spread in between. Nonetheless, delicious. But my absolute favorite is the chocolate sourdough bread. Fluffy soft and with so much chocolate that after I torn it open I got melted chocolate all over my fingers. Stopped here on my way to San Jose. This is my old neighborhood and wanted to see what's new and decided to get me a hot drink. This place has a ton of paid parking up front and the back. The line was long at 11am but it did go fast. I rate it at 3.5 stars because 1. At 11am they already don't have the choices I'd like to try. 2. No clear instructions on picking up your order. We sat on the second floor and they gave an opening to where you're supposed to hear them call your name the place is very loud so we had to go back down to pick up our hot drinks.
