I have long thought Big 5 is underrated. If you want good sports gear for far less than the competitors it's a great place. It's not the nicest cleanest nicest store in the world and while helpful the staff isn't the most amazing. But if they have what you need you can't beat the price. read more

Good part: a lot of goods and products. Bad part: a men's Fila brand pair of shoes has bed quality. It broke into a hole after 6 months. One male guy in charge of taking out shoes for customers lies to me (right after realizing that I am trying to get a compensation for the broken shoes). Not sure what happened to the people who gave the low ratings. We really liked this place. We went for chairs for the cotati accordion festival. A young man - wish I remembered his name - was so helpful. We ended up finding the perfect seat, a folding love seat. They let us buy the floor model and we had the best time because of that chair - it was so comfortable. Went to Dick's for Oofos slides per Oofos store locator. Wandered around an empty shoe department for five minutes looking for Oofos or assistance. I finally called out HELLO a few times. A badly trained and slightly pretentious young associate told me I wouldn't get anywhere yelling -- where was she when I was wandering around??? -- and told me she'd never heard of the brand. I went here to buy a canopy that was on sale. The manager and I guess one his lead shift managers were in the front and they were really helpful. They showed me the selection and made a suggestion based on price and functionality. Then he carried it to the front of the store for me, and then carried out to my car after the purchase. It was a big long awkward box about 75lbs, so no easy task, and I didn't ask for that, and didn't expect it. This is the type of service you don't see anywhere anymore. When I entered the store all 3 employees were having a chat and they didn't even acknowledge me. I went to the shoes to get some shoes on my lunch break. After a few minutes I had to holler up front to get help. My shoe and size was not there they only had a display which he said I could buy. I asked for a discount due to basically buying used shoes. The manager said yes plus my veteran discount and he said he would let cashier know. When I went to cashier she was only giving me 9$ off. I reminded her of my veteran discount and she said no. Aside from the friendly guy at the register, the old lady had nasty customer service and yelled "you only have 2 minutes, and I really want to go home!" I've been outside for 12 hours in this freeze watch weather and I desperately needed snow pants after getting off work and rushed over. It's 8:28, and I needed to rush to grab 1 more item. She was so exhausting hearing her complain and say rude things about her peers and coworkers. Talking about how, "none of them do anything right"...Is this really the representation you want for your store? This is a smaller Big 5 Sporting Goods store, located in Santa Rosa. The employee on the floor (Caucasian gentleman, about 6'2") was super helpful and friendly. Thanks for your help. Unfortunately, the female employees at the cash registers, were very distracted and unprofessional. They were busy greeting their friends with hugs & kisses and catching up on the latest gossip while customers stood around trying to spend money at the store. The selection here is somewhat limited. And, especially the smaller sizes in the men's section were out of stock. There wasn't a wide arrange of selections available - example was the men's adidas shorts - they primarily had sizes L and XL left. read more

When I asked for assistance in purchasing, I was told no one could help me with a ammo sale until after 5 pm, i was here around noon. Won't be heading here as a first stop going forward. We feel so blessed to have this Big 5 so close to us. They always have such a good selection and excellent sales. Plus, it is one of our go-to stores when we are shopping for holidays and birthdays because they carry such an interesting array of products. Recently we had an especially impressive experience. My husband had bought a pair of sneakers which he loved. We went back to the store to get a second pair, but unfortunately they did not have my husband's size in stock. Erika, one of the managers, called several stores in the region until she found exactly what we needed. She never once made us feel like we were being a nuisance. Erika was so professional and gracious. She demonstrated such perseverance and tenacity in finding multiple pairs of the shoes. Erika is the kind of employee who makes a company look good. Plus, the influence on her team members is clearly positive. Leticia, the cashier we worked with when we bought the first pair of shoes was incredibly welcoming, supremely polite and very capable. We hope that Erika and Leticia are recognized by Big 5 for representing their brand so favorably. We are so thankful for Big 5 Santa Rosa! read more

First tried to order boots on-line, everything looked good, UNTIL I reviewed the message saying that the order was ready to ship. I specifically said size 7.5 and they were shipping 8.0. So my wife went into the local store in Santa Rosa to get them, and they mismarked the box and sold her the wrong size. I will never buy anything from them ever again. Once again I had a great experience at this store. I'm always greeted when I walk in the door. These people don't know me. I started to search for my item but decided to ask first. The woman at the register quickly pointed me in the direction of the solar phone chargers and by the time I got there she was behind the counter helping me. She opened boxes and we talked about the differences. Very pleasant young woman. After my decision I went to pay for it and asked her name. ( everyone is still wearing masks). It was Christine! I thanked her and reminded her she had helped me with my backpack purchase. Everyone was helpful and polite, as usual at this store. Terrible customer service..I went in to buy a pair of inexpensive knock around tennis shoes. The shoe area looked like a bomb went off due to boxes all over. But I did find a pair. I went up front to purchase them there were 3 people ahead of me. The cashier was dealing with a lady with numerous items, along with coupons and questions on every charge, but I'm good with that. What was lousy was the fact there were 2 other employees there both were in the cashier area and were aware of the long wait, but never spoke, never offered to open the second cash register... they did NOTHING! The line ended being 7 deep and still no 2nd register. I put my purchase back in stock, walked out with a second customer leaving behind me. It's great they are doing so well that they don't need customers, but I'm done with that store. The store that was at Coddingtown Mall had pretty good customer service, but they closed it and kept this store open. One of the idle employees was from the gun department, which also has a register. He had no customers in his department, how simple would it have been to grab a few of the waiting customers and take care of them at his OPEN register? You know, maybe think a little outside the box and actually help people like your store. Terrible, terrible customer service. read more

Went today, Sunday 9/6 to buy tennis shoes. I was glad to see sale signs for their 65th Anniversary sale but there were no shoes on sale except one! I asked the associate where the sale shoes were and he said "probably in back, we'll probably put them out this afternoon" (it was 2:30 already). He walked away and didn't seem to be interested. My wife and I walked out with no shoes of course. Very disappointed. I usually buy my tennis shoes here but will rethink this in the future.. read more

I have many many happy memories of going sporting goods shopping at Big 5 in Coddingtown. I also have tons of memories of passing this exact location when it was an Ethan Allen store. So, it was a little odd walking in to find the place filled with all sorts of sporting goods. The parking lot wraps around the building so no matter where you park, it's just a few steps to the front doors. We were on a mission for a few specific items and got plenty of help finding each thing. Super cheery service and check-out, even though we lingered a bit close to closing time. I went online to check availability of two products at this particular store. Both items were said to be IN STOCK. I drove 40 minutes and asked the sales staff up front where to find my first item. Christine said they dont have the item but looking just past her, u spotted it; they DID have it. Next item, socks in a certain size..found tons of the exact ones I wanted but ALL in a smaller size, all the same. I asked the young man staff by shoes if there were any in the back stock and was told no, everything is put out on shelf as soon as it arrives. I went up front to ask Christine same question. She checked availability and said yes, I have 2 boxes of socks in back but nobody to check them for me. I am so frustrated that there is no value given to customer service here. I went on Monday 6/29 and horrible service. The only person who was very helpful and should be valued or get good paid because they seem to care about their job and customers is Christine. Everyone else was super rude and made me wait the longest time ever until Christine realized that I was there for a while and told me she could help me because the other workers wasted my time. Generally, I receive excellent service at your store, at least the one in Concord. However, I visited your location in Santa Rosa worth the hippies of buying a pair of walking shoes. I am an African American woman and I was totally ignored by all staff; especially the tall skinny white boy and short Latino boy that work in the shoe area. I did not know that money has a skin color attached to it, I thought it was green or in the form of plastic. In the future your staff should show customer service to all people, not just those with white skin. Big 5 has a good amount of inventory with mostly good prices. That being said, it is one of the worst shopping experiences I've ever had. Poor customer service, messy, poorly managed employees, and half of their products seem to not be priced correctly, if at all. I will continue to shop here but will not expect to be up-sold, explained benefits of products, or buy more than what I absolutely need. Hire some knowledgeable staff and manage them! read more

This place seems to be stuck in time, I have been going here for years and I don't think they have updated the place since 1992. This does not in anyway take away from the wondrous purchasing experiences I have had here. I got a few pair of shoes from this humungo pile they had of super cheap discounted off brands. These were supposed to be just some kick around beater shoes, but the damned things have lasted for over a year. This is a rare thing for me since I tear through shoes in about a month. This isn't REI, and its a nice straight forward sporting supply store without pretense. I purchased a few 3/4 length baseball shirts there for only $5 and am still pretty stoked about that. read more
