Backstreets has awesome food, especially their meat product (i.e. steaks, burgers, etc.). Food is always served hot and fresh. It's a great hang out place to get excellent food and superior service. The prime rib dip sandwich came out with a lot of wonderful sliced prime rib. The bread was lightly toasted with a small crunch and soft interior texture. Salads are consistently bright, flavorful, crispy and fresh vegetables. Pizza's are hand tossed and baked just right. Burgers are thick, juicy patties that are grilled to your liking and toppings however you want. All around good food. Great dining hall that appears small and tight when you first walk in, but it opens up. A very comfortable and airy restaurant where you can enjoy your food and your party/group. The bar amd outdoor area is so fun, relaxing and enjoyable. Just very comfortable. Plenty of seating and standing bar room. read more

WOW this place was great! I was looking for a good place to take my sister for lunch for her Birthday. The food was all delicious! Fresh, hot and served great. Staff very nice and competent. Place clean and fairly easy to bring my mother in her wheelchair. Started with apps. Homemade chips and queso, quesadillas and a cup of their beef vegetable soup. Several soup options which my sister loved! Salads fresh! Cesar and Spinach was delicious! Entree's Cornbeef and Burger soo good! Worth the hour drive! Will be back again soon. read more

This is one of those restaurants we will give another chance. The place was hopping. Service was excellent. Both of us thought that are meals were good, just not as good as we had hoped. First- the positives. Our server Chloe was excellent. Very kind and checked on us frequently. The restaurant interior is very nice and has great dimly lit ambiance. Comfortable booths and chairs. We didn't drink but I'm sure they can't mess up on drinks. That's really it. The food was bad. Just bad. We started with nachos- they were nothing special - just cheese, jalapeños and lettuce with sour cream and salsa on the side. I got the meatloaf with mashed potato's and veggies and my fiancé had the buffalo chicken pizza. His pizza had NO buffalo sauce on it- just cheese, lettuce, and some dry buffalo chicken- who doesn't put buffalo sauce on a buffalo chicken pizza?!! What??!. It was so gross he only had one piece. My meatloaf was soaked in a brown "gravy" that just tasted like Worcestershire sauce. Tart and gross. I tried to get a few bites that had not been drenched. The mashed potatoes had skins on them so you'd think they'd be nice chunky mashed potatoes (love peels in my mashed potatoes) - but they must have added a ton of milk or cream because the texture was thin and watery like you'd find in powdered mashed potatoes. Very interesting and creative menu! There has to have been a professional chef involved because each item is unique and appealing. First time here and loved our corned beef sandwich. Sirloin bisque soup was something new and great! Adding a grilled salmon steak for a low price was very cool! Wife liked her pizza also and the crust was especially good. Will be back! Chicken sandwich cooked so long it was leather on the outside and cardboard inside - couldn't even tear it with my teeth - and "steak" dip sandwich was less quality than grocery store Steakums. I've eaten here for years, mostly dine-in lunches and takeout dinners. I've waited to review them because there was always one thing that hindered my Backstreets experiences - getting through on the phone for takeout and no online ordering. There is still no online ordering, but there is now an answering machine message and the ability to wait for a human to place your takeout order. Game-changer for this popular local business. The food, value and friendliness have always been great in my experiences. I've tried many, many things on the menu, including appetizers, salads, soups, wraps, entrees, and desserts. I've never had anything but good food from Backstreets, and it's a FAR better value than Panera. You just need to wait longer. Avoid the wait at dinner by getting takeout. If you want to dine-in here, try lunch. read more

It's not the absolute best restaurant in hickory, but it's definitely upper tier, has lots of variety, and the cooking is usually consistently good. Very good for the value as well, so I'm giving it 5-stars overall. It's a great place and somewhere you can eat regularly, always find something you're in the mood for, and not come away disappointed. read more

The food and atmosphere made me feel quite welcomed. The scallops to die for, the cauliflower mashed potatoes incredible and the tuna scrumptious. Wonderful experience from soup to nuts. When I walked in the door today, one of the servers/ bartender Val welcomed me by name. I have to say I felt a bit like Norm on Cheers. A must experience restaurant. The above post was from a visit this past summer. Forgot to follow through to post. I was there again this past weekend, and nothing has changed. 5 star service with 5 star food (at least ours was). My first time here and was very impressed. 1:30 in the afternoon and the place was hopping... a good sign. We were promptly seated and our server (Amy) greeted us within a couple minutes. Drinks promptly served, and food served in a reasonable timeframe. Food was hot and fresh and better than expected. My impression is the owners know how to take care of its staff as we did not experience any service issues accompanied by the "lack-of-help" excuses that most other places currently use. Our server (Amy, said she's been working there quite a while) was very attentive and provided great service. Recent county health safety inspection score of 98... along with great scores going back to 2010. Kudos to the owners for their efforts in keeping their customers safe. Most of the recent reviews (past year) are pretty good. I don't consider any reviews more than a year old as every business was learning how to survive in our new clown-world of government tyranny. I read a couple bad reviews and saw one from someone who seems to think all restaurants should have a great vegetarian menu even though less than 10% of the population is vegetarian... and another who doesn't like the fact they only have one take-out phone. Reminded me of those people who give one star reviews because they ordered the wrong size shirt. I will definitely return. read more

Wanted take out. Usually, we've been happy with Backstreets. Called and found we were 6th in line to order - waited about 30 minutes. While ordering, they hung up. Called back. on hold for 45 more minutes. Placed the order and went to pick up. Both orders were wrong. The tuna did not have the sides. And when you pay to have chicken added to the quesadilla, wouldn't it be nice to actually have the chicken on it? My wife called to complain. the little girl said she'd get manager - what a coincidence! hung up on us again. Wont be going back any time soon. Suggest you don't either. read more

3 wks ago sat at pass thru counter at inside vs outside spot where there was chair. Bartender across rm walked over & took my order for beer. Asked for 2nd beer later from Big Burly F waiter. She meanly told me can't sit there & I said what? She went & told owner, then he says I must go outside to order, so I do. As people both sides of me ordering drinks, I am ignored (am Italian from MI), so I am waiving trying to order. Big Burly says I am going to be kicked out. What I say? Then owner throw bill in front of me & says pay up & leave. I go again past Mon & sit at bar & order beer, then 2nd bartender says I must leave? This spot is very nice in a hidden area. It almost was hard to find, but glad we did. The ambiance was very nice with a nice outdoor bar area with some open tables too. Our waitress was nice, attentive and precise with our order. My food of choice was shrimp with loaded bake potato and it was prepared nicely. Shrimp was hot and not over cooked , and baked potato complimented it well. My bf had the chicken salad with some crispy onion rings on top( some of the best onion rings I've tried) and some classic wings that were nice and crispy. Nice restaurant. Busy, but short wait. Our server was very polite and timely. We ordered beef nachos and got chicken. No big deal. The family was hungry and the nachos were good. We had the chicken, bacon, ranch wrap with fries. Right up a teenager's alley. My wife had the tuna sandwich with sweet potato fries. She asked for rare and it was. The tuna was delicious. I had the bison burger medium rare with a spinach salad. The spinach salad was the perfect balance for my meal. The bison burger did come out over cooked, however, it was still delicious. Backstreets is awesome. There is usually a wait, but that comes with being one of the best restaurants in Hickory. Plus you can always grab a drink and hang out on the patio while you wait. I usually get either the Asian Chicken Wrap or the Carolina Burger wrap. The soy ginger dipping sauce is to die for. No matter what I get, I always ask for a side of it for dipping something on my plate. The chili and slaw on the Carolina Burger Wrap reminds me old drug stores when I was a kid. It is perfect. For starters we usually get the Lump Crab and Artichoke Dip. Personally I substitute the pita points for chips, but either way you can't go wrong. The bar is popping late night also. They always have great local brews on tap and excellent margaritas. Kevin definitely knows his way around a bar. If you want to have a good time in Hickory, go to Backstreets. Another one of our favorite stops coming to or from Sugar Mountain Ski Area. It is more restaurant rather than Bar, so don't be put off that it might be a beer swilling sports bar. Nice restaurant. Bar area has a good seating area which is just fine. This is a lunch and dinner place. As those of you who have read my reviews, I like to see a very thorough menu covering lots of options. Such is the case here. Salads galore! And so varied: spinach, kale, fried oysters, tuna, chicken, in a bread bowl or not. You can add shrimp, tuna or salmon to any of them for an additional charge. Portions are giant. Dressings, with a few exceptions, are make in-house. Some unusual appetizers like sauteed oysters and lump crab with artichoke dip. Wraps, sandwiches and burgers. All sorts. And there are entrees (meats and fish) and pizza. Did they leave anything out? NO...you certainly will find SOMETHING you would like. Great service, accommodates adjustments to orders and prices are reasonable. Baked potato is a side, which is just great, esp for lunch rather than only available at dinner. And the portions are really good. Wife ordered soup and salad and she could not finish it. I had a hamburger, chili, cream soup which was to die for. I did not die, but would have if I continued to eat for a few hours. A wonderful, filling soup. Yummy. Good place.
