Husband and I went with friends to the Backwoods Steak house. I probably would have gone anyway to see the Scottish cows and emu's walking around. We heard that the fish was good and the steak so half of us ordered the steak and the other the fish. I enjoyed the weird shredded iceberg lettuce bar because they had potato salad but not my husband. Then the entree come out. The fish was not very fresh and was fishy. The steak was the thinnest steak in the world. My husband said his was gristly which is weird for a rib eye steak. They cooked it correctly (med rare) but how, I don't know. The food is good and the waitress staff are very nice and efficient. Salad bar is good. But the customer service of the man who seats you at your table stinks. The only complaint I have is that they tell you over the phone that they do not take reservations and that is first come first serve basis and everyone in the party must be present before being seated. Ok, that is all fine and good as long as you treat everyone that way. We tried to make a reservation for 21 people (birthday celebration) and was told no, but when we got there they had a reservation for someone called "Jimmie Mack" and was seating their party whenever they came in. They didn't have to wait for their whole party to arrive before being seated. Guess he is a friend of the owner or goes to their church. Who knows, but you need to treat every customer the same way. A person in our party ordered food to go and they don't bring it to your table, they tell you it is up at the check out register. We came in as a group but were missing two people that were on their way and they refused to seat us until all were present. If they weren't so rude about it would have been different! Poor cut in steak, we ordered a 16oz steak and it was 85% fat. $21.00 steak and had only a 4 oz piece of meat is outrageous! We ordered fried pickles and they never showed. The only reason I am giving them a 2 is because their food was good. If it was based on customer service their would not be a low enough rating. We went there for my SIL birthday party, I tried to call ahead and was told they do not take reservations or call ahead seating. I understand they are small and locally owned so I am ok with that. So when we were finally just 2 people short we were seated but at different tables...Problem # 1!!!! Problem #2: The way we were spoken to by the older man who was helping seat people. I know everyone has a bad day now and then but you are open 3 days a week, if you can't smile for 5 hours a day for 3 days a week you are open and make your customers feel welcome, well, then we do not need to give you our money. Problem # 3, my niece ordered a filet to go for her husband who couldn't make it, she goes to pay for her food and they had sold his food. Yes, they sold her to go order to someone else, what was she told? "I told that lady you would come get it when you left" I really hope it gets better but I can't say I will go back to find out. This restaurant is in the top 3 of the worst restaurants I've ever visited. For starters, I looked up the menu online to see what Backwoods restaurant offered and prices. At the restaurant, all of the main items were $4 to $5 more. My wife I and both ordered steak. I ordered my NY Strip cooked medium. When the steak arrived it was completely rare. I sent the steak back and when the waiter returned, the steak was half rare and the other half medium-rare. I ate that portion and sent the rare portion back. When I got the steak back it tasted like charcoal and,was heavily salted. My wife's steak was mostly fat and extremely salty. When we left the cashier asked how things went. I said not good. To say this place is "off the beaten path" is stating the obvious. It is in the middle of the backwoods with nothing else around. The restaurant itself looks like an "authentic" Cracker Barrel style... heavy logs along the front with rocking chairs on the front porch which gives it a home-town feel. The interior is very low key but rustic. Wood everywhere except for the the tables and chairs, The tables where standard restaurant-style with metal-framed chairs. The prices are very reasonable for a steakhouse ($10-$20) but they also have seafood and other fare. However, the steaks is what everyone comes in for. I had the "bits and pieces" of steak. The Bits and Pieces are only available on Thursday. This steak is what is left over from when they get the standard cuts. The price was $13.95 and the size can range between 12-16oz. It comes with one trip to the salad bar, rolls, and one side. he salad bar was a little below par. However, the "bits and Pieces" steak was FANTASTIC and it was much larger that I was expecting. I travel for business a lot and this was the best steak I have ever had. The onion rings where not per-packaged but home-made with large cut rings and comes with ranch dressing.. The wait-staff is only paid through gratuities so the service was very good. Overall, this place is a MUST for any traveler in the area. There are two issues. First is they only take cash. No exceptions. Second is they are only open Thursday through Saturday. read more

Unfortunately, I had a terrible experience tonight at Backwoods. My family and I met here, as we have done many times before, for my mothers birthday. There was 11 of us total. The evening progressed normally with rolls, salad, and drinks. I ordered a small ribeye cooked medium. When the steak came out, it looked quite rare to me. I confirmed this with several family members and we all agreed that it definitely wasn't medium. I asked the waitress to please take it back and cook it more. She graciously obliged. A few minutes later, she returned with the steak, handed it to me, and ran off before I could check it. To my dismay, it was not any better. It didn't look like it was on the grill more than 30 seconds (if at all). I decided to not send it back again since most of my family and finished their meals and ate the remainder of my wife's chicken. I told the waitress that I still was not satisfied with the steak and to take it off my bill. Soon after, the owner showed up. He asked what the problem was and I explained the situation to him. I said I didn't want to send it back again and please remove it from my bill. Then, he asks me, "Well, was you salad good? Was the potato good? Did you enjoy the rolls?" I answered yes to all the question suspecting where he was leading me. He then asked, "Well, do you mind paying for all of those then?" Dumbfounded, I said, "Are you serious? How much is all that going to be?" He said, "About the same price as the steak." I angrily agreed to pay what ever. To make it worse, when I got to the register, the lady behind the counter asked how things were, and I said, "Not very good. You lost about 6 customers tonight." Her only reply was, "Oh well." The back and forth continued for a few more minutes before we left. We were treated like I was trying to steal from him. I am not in need of a free meal, nor do I want one. I am shocked, disappointed, angry, and sad about this whole situation. I don't know if he thought I was trying to get a free meal or what, but I've never been treated that way by a restaurant owner in my life. They had such a good reputation there, but I will NEVER set foot in their restaurant again. read more
