I was very pleased with the food, the excellent customer service, and the clean atmosphere that we had to eat in. It was a very good environment with no steps. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. I give our waitress five stars for handling all of us with a positive attitude. There we're I think eight wheelchairs and four staff members. I had the fried chicken, lol, Collett greens, sweet, corn, salmon chrochets, a salad, and the apple cobbler for dessert. Everything was hot, fresh and delicious! Our manager was Margaret. If I wanted food cooked like this, I would have just cooked my own at home and not added any seasoning. Mashed potatoes tasted surprisingly home made, but the brown gravy was quite suspicious ... it tasted a bit like instant gravy. I tried their cole slaw which was also good, but not anything I was impressed about. The mac and cheese was too soft and cheaply made for my taste and the corn did not live up to my expectations as well. $8 including tax and sweet tea. I wish I could have had the option to opt out of the tea and not pay for it, but it was a flat $8 regardless if you want a drink or not. So, plus a $2 tip, it was a $10 bill for lunch just for me, and although it is acceptable, I was not to thrilled about it either. Then again, there arent that many options out here. It was AWFUL!!! The time was 7:30, I found the appearance to be old, dated, dirty and beat up. The price was okay, but for the quality too high. The cornbread was awful and I will eat almost any kind of cornbread. Canned foods, bland and each vegetable has a thickness of the same. A lot of fried foods and generic desserts unless you top the pies with ice cream. One dessert was an unidentified creme pie, even the waiter didn't know what it was. As we entered, they added fresh fried green tomatoes on top of a container of cold fried green tomatoes. Why? If the food is thrown out at the end, which we observed, why not remove the old food before adding new on a fried item. Overall, the entire experience was a food trough without the Southern cooked food, we wanted to enjoy. To each his own opinion and taste. Way too much waste in this type of restaurant! There were at least 6 guys waiting by the trough, when I went to the very unclean restroom waiting to dump the steaming hot food in to very large rolling trash containers. Why? Stop cooking at some point and stop the waste, the price might be better. The wait staff is not really a waiter or waitress, they are bus ppl removing plates of uneaten foods, refilling tea and a tip. I am in the service industry and a very good tipper. Every time I come in, they talk to you like your the only guest in the house. And they take the time to check on you every time they are near, even when your not seated in their area. Been wanting to come in for the past few months and finally stopped for a late lunch. Impressed that at 1pm everything was fresh and not dried out. The big winners were the salads. Great broccoli salad, broccoli and rice, and cole slaw. The cucumber and tomato salad tasted garden fresh and still had crunch. The proteins were good. Only miss was the mac and cheese. When we asked locals where to get a good homestyle meal, M&J's was the top recommendation. I miss traditional Southern cooking, and the buffet had all of my favorites - fried green tomatoes, collards, chicken, cornbread, pecan pie, and everything else I could imagine. $8 buys you an all-you-can-eat meal and a drink, which is an exceptional deal you rarely find outside of fast food. The atmosphere is not much too look at, but the focus here is on the food, which is plentiful, hot, and well cooked and seasoned. I was excited to find vegetables that were still recognizable as vegetables - the greens were excellent. My favorite dish (and the favorite of several family members) was the fried green tomatoes, which were just perfect. The breading was crispy and flaky. I also loved the dessert bar, where the chocolate mousse pie and the lime mousse pie were both delicious. I could've eaten myself into a food coma. I spoke later with someone who used to work at M&J's, and she spoke highly of the quality of the food. To hear someone who has been behind-the-scenes at a restaurant still praise it (and regularly eat there) speaks highly of the place.
