Terrible service. It took an hour to get our food. First time going to this restaurant on 5/20 and won't return.

This is a sports bar. A huge sports bar with tables where people can sit down. It's like you're in your own backyard. But you're actually in an air-conditioned environment. Big screen TVs are every direction you look with lovely bright colored picnic tables and chairs. Unfortunately, this was our first time there and we didn't know what to expect. It's not the place for a two year-old. My two-year-old granddaughter was with us. We were just looking to have a hamburger in a nice upscale restaurant. It's extremely loud so be prepared for that. (Not an upscale restaurant but nice none the less.) If I had known, this was a sports bar we would not have gone with a two-year-old. Service was OK, a little bit slow. Food was ok. Not enough fries with hamburgers. Our food server seemed to be disappointed because we weren't ordering any alcohol. We asked for lemon water. Also known as agua fresca water. It appears that that's where their sales or tips come from. When I got the bill, the lowest tip on there is 20%. This place is not worth 20%. And the way our food server acted, no way was she worth 20%. I had to go looking for her to get our final bill. We must've sat for an additional 20 minutes after we finished eating waiting for her pass so we could flag her down for the bill. I finally had to go to the cashiers station to get the bill. Our server also seem to be seriously distracted. Not sure why but this looks like a place where you could make really good tips if you just paid attention to your customers. maybe she had too many tables to take care of. I don't know. But I think when you leave your people alone and don't even bother to check on them, they've been there over 30 minutes yeah that's not customer service worth 20%. I don't understand why restaurants don't teach and put an emphasis on their food servers that their tip is based on their presentation, their friendliness and attentiveness to the table not on what the restaurant thinks they should get. (Former food server/waitress of 40 years) Would I ever go there again? Probably not because the bar scene is not my forte nor do I get the thrill of watching sports teams compete. I think it's a great place for men to go if they want to watch their favorite football basketball whatever. Have a couple drinks appetizers hamburger whatever. But definitely not for a family with small children. It's just too loud in there and too distracting for children. But hey, each of their own. read more

Backyard - Desert Ridge is an awesome spot, especially if you're looking for a great sports bar atmosphere. The place is filled with big screens everywhere you look, making it perfect for watching any game. The vibe is lively, fun, and super welcoming. They hosted our girls' soccer team along with all the parents, a group of 40+ and handled it incredibly well. Our waitress, Tiana, was amazing! She was super friendly, patient, and on top of everything. She took everyone's drink and food order without missing a beat, and we truly appreciated her hard work. A big thank you to Tiana and the entire staff for taking such great care of our group. The drinks were great, and the food is classic sports bar favorites, simple but flavorful. Went to the Backyard twice in one week. I had gone about the same time 5-6 PM both times. Two different waitresses, same experience. They were both excellent, very nice, conscientious and were excellent at their jobs. We felt welcomed and our drinks were kept full. We were checked on frequently and always with a smile and willingness to keep us happy. Who's ever doing the hiring , I want to commend. These were our first times there but definitely not our last. Located in the heart of desert ridge mall. This place is huge. I was blown away when I walked in looking at the huge screens at the center of the restaurant. Office party, family time, friends hanging out or just getting a drink, this place has it all covered. We had our office party and about 20 of us, but had to be split since the seating was a booth and all could not fit in. The place is new and our waiter was young who was having difficulties remembering the drinks and the orders were getting messed up. She was sweet and very nice, so brownie points for that. We ordered lot of cocktails and I loved the camp which was tequila based and had a slight spice to it. For food, we had nachos, tacos, wings, pizza, quesadillas, fries and more. We loved the margarita pizza, the nachos were loaded with cheese which was alright. Overall the food is very standard and bar kind. The drinks decent and the service still needs to be worked on. There is room for improvement coz this place can go bonkers during game night for sure. read more

We came here to watch some games, as they probably have 50 tvs in this one large space. It was ideal to catch multiple games at the same time. That being said it was quite loud, and the ambiance was exactly as its name implies -- it is very much like a backyard. The chairs were very soiled and the menu had grill food options mostly with some salads as well. I wouldn't go here for a meal, but it is a good place to watch sporting events for sure! read more

ADDISON consistently forgot about our table once we were moved to her section. She charged us twice and even got the bill wrong. We disputed the transactions with the bank since although she corrected the bill, it was still wrong. She never apologized or accepted responsibility instead we were met with a rude indifference. We usually have a great experience with the waiters there so if you get her switch try to a different section. read more

What a cool spot! I love that you can bring your dog inside. Such a rare find, especially in Arizona. The entire staff was so welcoming and seemed to genuinely love dogs, which made the experience even better. We ordered the ribs, chicken wings, potato skins, and a burger. The burger was fantastic and reminded me a lot of In N Out in the best way. The wings were good, just a bit on the sweeter side than I prefer. I wasn't a fan of the Korean-style sauce on the ribs, but the ribs themselves were still tasty. The potato skins were more like loaded baked potatoes, which I actually really enjoyed. I can already tell this will be a regular spot for us during those miserably hot summer months. Great food, air conditioning, and my dog gets some mental stimulation too. Win win! read more

I really wanted to like this place but every time I have gone to enjoy a meal or drinks here the service completely ruins it. The food is just okay. The one thing it has going for it is that the vibe is great! I love the live music, the high energy but unfortunately when your service is consistently terrible I have zero interest in returning. Just for an overall example... several times I would have stayed longer and enjoyed more drinks but the servers are more interested in talking amongst each other than they are about checking on their tables. Not sure what to say here. They advertised a shuttle to the a Phoenix Open. We paid $40 because we liked their early shuttle time. They had a HUGE bus and we were the only patrons. We paid $40 and that included breakfast and a drink. Our sever was absolutely lovely they are lucky to have her. The food was decent. Here's the kicker, when he dropped us off at the Phoenix Open, he let us know there was no return trip. We had to get an uber. We usually go to The Vig for a round trip shuttle for FREE, but tried this instead. Only posting this so anyone in the future knows NOT to do this. read more

Our family enjoyed our visit to Backyard. The wings and carne asada tacos were amazing. Our waitress was attentive and very apologetic for the people sitting next to us. Unfortunately, we sat out on the patio where there were kids running around and throwing things.. At one point a server who was carrying a tray of drinks was almost taken out by these kids. My wife had to go and complain to the manager. "Sports BAR"... means BAR not a romper room for kids. We enjoyed our first time at BY but parents need to take care of their children and teach them how to behave in a public. read more

Had dinner here w/ family tonight. Interesting sports bar vibe mixed with massive TV's, indoor games like corn hole and jenga, and 2 massive bars! Food was typical bar food with some twists. We all had a mixture of nachos, their special sandwich - smoked beef w/ cheese sauce and horsey sauce, hamburgers, mac and cheese and a mix of salads. Food was average and several of the meals were a tad too salty.( could be our personal taste so we did not say anything.) Our server was attentive and personable. I organize various friends birthday parties and we choose a different venue all the time. I had never been to the backyard in desert Ridge and thought it was a nice casual choice for 10 of us gals to have a happy hour and a bite to eat. I have to admit I started out with low expectations, but right from the moment I got Ashley on the phone to make a reservation, I was impressed! Her attitude was fantastic. She was bubbly and happy, and that was a great start. We arrived there and got taken to our table and the most happy lovely cutest waitress ever, Tiona looked after us in a better fashion than a five star restaurant! We came here on a very busy weekend during March Madness and it was buzzing! They have done a good job of making a large space feel like a fun backyard. Lots of lawn chairs and games. Very large screens in the middle of the restaurant and then smaller ones in other spots. The bar by the door had numerous televisions so all spots are good spots. Dogs were even allowed. We were told there was a 3 hour wait to get a table although we could see empty tables. Unfortunately the high tops by the bar area are not serviced by the bar and are saved for reservations. We did stand by the bar for awhile and we got lucky when three people left and we had seats. Everyone behind the bar was friendly and working hard. Our drinks and food arrived quickly, especially considering how busy it was. Normal bar food menu. We ordered crispy wings and nachos and both were tasty and had a nice presentation. The nachos came topped with fresh avocado. Delish! Beer was around $7.00 each and nachos were $17.49 for a generous portion. Great atmosphere and a fun time here. read more

Went on a Thursday around 3pm. It was moderately busy, we were seated right away and helped quickly which was nice. The restaurant is huge!!!! Much bigger than I thought. The doors were closed almost all the way, but we did get a good breeze inside. I love the ambiance and giant TVs! Will definetly come back for a baseball game! The food was decent, nothing exciting. They definitely need a happy hour menu printed. We asked what was happy hour and one item was on it, when we got our bill, it was not correctly priced. When I asked our server about it, it sounded as if she knew there was an error, but didn't fix it. It was just odd. Beer menu is ok- I'd like to see more local light beers (blondes), I had a blue moon which was good. Just before leaving I saw the dog murals and was very happy to see a pitbull. Met up with family here for dinner and we didn't start off great.... Our hostess sat us down and gave us the lunch menu. She didn't say who our server would be and just left. Not very friendly or professional.... We waited for 20 minutes before our server came. The hostess failed to let the server know that they sat a table outside of their dedicated area. Which I do not blame the server for but the hostess failed their job. After we got our server she was very nice and apologized for the confusion. She was attentive and got our order right and our food came out pretty fast. I ordered the southwest Cobb and it was okay. The dressing not good and the shrimp was plain even though there were spices on them. If I ever go back I would order only drinks and appetizers. Their crispy wings were some of the best I've ever had! And their flavored shots were very good. They had a retro vibe and a classic bug up front which was cool. Looks cool, but DONT BE FOOLED!!! I don't even have words right now. We came and requested to sit outside... partially because we have a five-year-old. To our delight they had outdoor toys like Jenga, connect four, etc. My son met some other kids to play with while we sat at a high top table and waited for our food. Just before our food arrived, the servers came out and started taking the toys away from the boys as they were playing. We approached them and asked if there was a problem. They tried to tell us that the boys were throwing the toys and playing inappropriately. My husband and I, who were sitting a few feet away from them, knew this wasn't true so we asked more questions. My husband and I take our kids behavior seriously and keep a close eye on them at all times, especially since we ourselves are both educators. The staff members continued to tell us that the kids were playing inappropriately and that they were not playing Jenga as it was supposed to be played. This was correct. The boys were not, they were playing with the toys imaginatively and acting like they were in a spaceship or a car however they never threw the toys or did anything disrespectful to the patrons around them as the women tried to claim. The "manager" then tried to tell me, when I objected to her false claims, that they needed the space for people that were arriving and that she was sorry that she said that and she was incorrect in her claims. I continued to press and say this was a family space and that it was intended for people to play in (as they had toys out there for them to do so), again they tried to tell me that the boys were playing inappropriately. The manager tried to apologize and tell me she was new and make excuses for the false accusations she made against the kids but at that point I was done. Don't try to say my kid has done something wrong. Review the video footage. It will clearly show that the kids did NOTHING wrong, and were playing like kids RESPECTFULLY in a family zone. DONT GO TO THIS ESTABLISHMENT IF YOU WANT A FAMILY ENVIRONMENT !!!! Sarah J, you should pay attention to the number of negative reviews lately, and use it to rethink your management approach. Cut this place some slack...they are newer and figuring out their space. My husband, daughter (11), and I liked our experience here. There's big TVs everywhere, interactive games, and music at a good level. Looked like a band was setting up when we left, so check for live music too. Very cute decor - makes you feel like you're in your aunt's backyard. Our server was sweet, friendly, and attentive...service was great! The food was good...I had the turkey melt minus the jam, hubby had the omelet, and daughter had French toast. The food isn't going to win any awards but there was a nice variety to choose from. I honestly don't even know where to start with how bad my experience was at The Backyard Restaurant. From the moment I walked in, everything just went downhill. The place looked completely unorganized -- no one greeted us for at least 10 minutes, even though several staff members saw us standing there awkwardly waiting for a table. When someone finally came over, they looked annoyed that we were even there. The service was unbelievably poor. Our server barely checked on us and acted like taking our order was a huge inconvenience. Drinks took forever to come out -- we literally waited 25 minutes for water, and when it arrived, it wasn't even cold. I tried to be understanding, but when the food came out, things got worse. My meal was cold, undercooked, and somehow still greasy. The "fresh salad" looked like it had been sitting in a fridge for a week -- brown lettuce, soggy croutons, and dressing that tasted sour. We tried to politely let the server know, but instead of apologizing or offering to fix it, she just shrugged and said, "That's how the kitchen makes it." Really? That's your answer? No effort to make it right at all. The manager eventually came over after we asked, but instead of handling the situation professionally, he had an attitude too -- like we were the problem for expecting decent service. The place itself isn't clean either. Tables were sticky, utensils had spots on them, and I even saw a fly land on someone's food at the next table. It's clear no one here cares about hygiene or customer experience. For the prices they charge, it's a complete joke. Honestly, this was one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had. Between the rude staff, slow service, disgusting food, and lack of basic cleanliness, I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. There are plenty of restaurants that actually appreciate their customers and take pride in what they serve -- The Backyard is definitely not one of them. Save your time, your money, and your patience. This place needs a complete overhaul -- new management, new staff, new attitude -- because right now it's a total disaster. read more

This is a concept coming from EEG & mimics their location in TX. Formerly a Sandbar and looks to "set the bar high" as an elevated entertainment spot. The atmosphere is super inviting. Open-air recreation complex which hosts a few huge L.E.D LARGE screens, many flat screen TV's sounding both bars & state-of-the-art lighting from cool palms to the DJ's facade booth. Menu offering creative comfort foods such as bugers, bbq, sandwiches, salads mex and more. Pair your food with over 45 beers including craft beers, elegant cocktails & wine served at two different bars plus a dog-friendly outdoor patio with plenty of turf & an area for your fur babies to explore and play. In our party we started with the Nachos. Fresh made chips in-house with a wonderful cheese sauce, but what made them even better was the pickled chilies, roasted tomatoes & charred jalapeño crema. Also got the potato skins which come with a beautiful braised beef short-rib, caramelized onion, cheddar & Guinness gravy. More of a "poutine style" potato skin, but good. Other orders included: Meatloaf Loco Moco which was a generous portion and is prepared with a thick slice of pan-seared meatloaf, two over-easy eggs, rice, fried onions & a black pepper gravy. Excellent! Cinnamon French Toast is a sweet dish made up of brioche, whipped cream, candied bacon, walnuts, maple syrup which made for a delightful dish. Service and staff were on point. It was busy and they were handling the patronage well. The decor is colorful & fun. Additionally, there are some interactive games such as ping pong, jenga, corn hole, connect four and more. Note-Look for weekday events scheduled like Tallboy & Tequila Tuesdays & Throw'em Back Thursdays just to name a few! They will have a unique brunch menu too. Good service, but poor food portions! My team came here for a lunch and upon entry The Backyard looks bright and fun. There are plenty of seating options and TONS of TVs around the bar. All of the servers and bartenders were super friendly and our server did a great job being so responsive to our large party. Beer selection was spot on as well! Great happy hour prices, and while we didn't order any appetizers I'd say that's probably the only menu you want to order from. The food however was an absolute joke! The portion sizes were ridiculously small for the price. My co-worker order the tuna melt which was served on normal sandwich bread (like wonder bread) which seemed small for a restaurant dish. The sandwich had barely any tuna on it or really any filling for that matter. Another coworker got the grilled chicken sandwich which was also served on tiny sandwich bread and it had maybe 3-4oz cut of chicken. The entire table laughed and it actually became a joke where the rest of us were offering to get him an appetizer to make up for his puny sandwich. My husband ordered the street tacos which were tiny and way overpriced. Everyone's fries were WAY overdone. Decent dishes worth ordering would be the turkey melt or crispy chicken sandwich. The turkey melt was quite good and had more meat than any other sandwich. Great flavor too! The crispy chicken was a decent size and my coworkers said it was okay, but not as good as Chick fil A. Few coworkers had the salmon and pasta which did not look as good as the price ($30?!?!). They said it was okay but they wouldn't order again. Overall I don't think any of us would go again for a meal. Beer, wings, and football? Sure. But their prices do not match the quality AT ALL. read more

Backyard hang out with friends, but make it indoors All of us locals have been awaiting the opening of The Backyard at Desert Ridge. We've watched it rebrand from the old Sandbar to this new bigger building right off Tatum, plus their marketing has been pretty good. Now it is here and has opened to some disappointment and bad reviews. It was heavily marketed as a place to bring your dogs, but that area has been behind in constructi and so only service dogs are allowed currently. The menu is still limited as well, so there is lots of room for improvement when they release the full menu. I still have hope that they will work out the kinks, and it will become a fun local spot. I reserved online a couple of weeks in advance for a party of eight. It's nice that they allowed to book that many whereas lots of restaurants allow to book up to only 5 without calling. The problem is that when I realized more were joining our party, I tried calling for 3 days in a row to change the reservation, but no one ever answered. They did get us seated right away, with no issue adding 3 more to our party. With 11 of us, we probably should have had two servers or one a bit more dedicated to a large group. I enjoyed my burger and fries, and although I didn't ask how everyone else enjoyed their food, I do think it all looked pretty good. The drink menu for their specialty drinks is pretty gimmicky and full of sugary choices. When our party was done, a few of us stayed behind and moved over to the bar and enjoyed a few more beverages. It is pretty loud in there, but to be fair, we went on a rainy evening, so all of the roll-up glass doors were closed, which didn't help with volume. There were a few yard games scattered around and quite a few tvs all over, including some extra extra large ones hanging overhead. There were a few receipt discrepancies that had to be worked out, and I have seen many reviews claiming the same issue. So again, there are quite a few things to improve on, and I really hope they do because this will be a fun spot. I would definitely feel comfortable bringing my family with two young kids and not having to worry about them being loud or rambunctious.
