We celebrated multiple birthdays here in the private room just off the bar on a Wednesday night. The space accommodated our group of about 20, and it had a good social vibe for all of us throughout the 2+ hours. Service was good, but at times we needed additional help balancing all the requests. The server did great, but I'm sure they were feeling the pressure. We had a variety of appetizers that included the katsu chicken bites, pork potstickers, house & sweet potato fries, spicy edamame, and crispy fish bites. When it came to dinner options, I was on the fence, but then realized that on Wed, it's Happy Hour until 10 pm... with that said, I of course doubled down on my Lilikoi margarita. I decided to go with the Hilo Sliders and had one each... burger, pork, and Thai fish cake, Ceviche, and Chicken lettuce cups, as I wanted a variety that night. My buddy did all 3 beef sliders and I was glad i didn't as that one slider was dry (overcooked), but the other 2 balanced it out. While visiting Arizona for a wedding, we had some time to meet up with friends for lunch. Our group of 9 met at Hula's and were happy for find that even on a Saturday afternoon, they still had a large table available for our party. Hula's does have happy hour deals every day, but the weekend deals are limited to drinks only (weekdays include some food options). Some of our group ordered discounted drinks, and between the 9 of us, we got a solid assortment of items, ranging from mai tais and longboards to potstickers and loco moco, and even a teriyaki chicken kids meal. Understandably, the food took a bit with our party size, but everything was coordinated came out pretty much at the same time. The loco moco was definitely a group favorite (good burger patty) while the mac salad was probably our least favorite component (lacking in salt and flavor). To zhush up my loco moco a bit, I asked our server for some hot sauce, and was brought their Madagascar hot sauce. Woooo-wee that was hot! But it was fun to pass the sauce cup around the table so we could all try some. It was definitely on the spicy side, even for us spice lovers, but tasty. My husband and I came here on our first date and now we come back when we're in town for our first date anniversary to celebrate another year. This year we brought our 3 year old along. Service was fast, friendly and on top of everything! Drinks were STRONG which we were not anticipating. Edamame was really spicy or we're just weak to real spice. We came here for happy hour to have an authenic 1944 Mai Tai. The mai tais were spot on made exactly like the original Trader Vics. The ahi poke was horrible, no flavor, large chunks of tough tuna. Yuck. But, the fries, rice and seaweed salad were good. read more

I've been to the other Hulas and was excited to try the new high street location. I was surprised that on a Sunday afternoon it wasn't busy at all. But it made it great for me and my friends because we were able to sit in the tiki room that's just off the main dining and it was just us in there. It had wonderful vibes and ambience and decor. Our server was great always checking on us even though we took a while to order everything, she always repeatedly checked in and never made us feel rushed. We ordered the chicken lettuce cups and the potstickers as an appetizer and both were great. I definitely will order the potstickers every time I go. I ordered the Aji tuna tacos as my main course with french fries instead of the rice and beans and the tacos were wonderful! I can't believe how much fish they put in there. And the sauce on top was just the right amount and flavor. And I couldn't have been more happy with how many fries they gave me for my side. So this is another central Phoenix favorite. I love the vibe inside of here. It gives summer all around.. I love to come here for their happy hours and order a variety of appetizers . I can honestly say I've never had a bad dish here. Everything is so delicious and uniquely crafted. I can't say that I feel like the service is not overly nice here but it's not bad, to me it's the perfect amount of friendly and efficient, but not overbearing. I moved to Phoenix close to a year ago and funny enough, Hula's was my first meal in town. Since then, I've returned a handful of times for both food and drinks. Located on High Street, Hula's Modern Tiki has three locations in Phoenix. While High Street is a popular area full of bars, restaurant, shops, and more, you'll be able to find free parking either in the garage or in the surface lots/spaces that surround the entertainment district. Ambiance (4.5/5): I love a good tiki bar and I also love Hawaiian spots. The laid back vibes are present here, with an element of sophistication. There's a square bar in the middle of the restaurant as well as tables and booths. I've sat in both areas. My only complaint? The barstools don't have back support. Back support is clutch when you have a bad back. Service (4/5): On all of my visits, the service has been pretty solid. Not always terribly friendly, but pretty efficient across the board. Both if you're sitting at the bar or at a table. Drinks (4/5): I love tiki drinks and you'll find an interesting menu here. Many of the drinks are rum-focused, but you'll find other spirits, too. They even have a scorpion bowl which is always a hit. It's one of those group drinks you can share with extra large straws. I wish the drinks incorporated fire a little more as that's a tiki bar trademark, but outside of that, solid. Food (4/5): If you've never had Hawaiian food, you're in for a treat. The kahlua pork, a classic Hawaiian dish, is one of my favorites. The skewer appetizer is also delicious. As are the sweet potato fries (and a generous portion at that). Really, pretty much everything I've had on the menu has been quite good. The only thing I wasn't impressed with are the Johnny Cakes. Pro tip: Take advantage of Hula's daily specials and happy hour for some good deals on food and drinks! read more

Our server was wonderful and very flexible. After reviewing all their tiki drink options other than about two drinks everything is very pineapple or heavy lime focused. In going to other tiki bars, there's often way more options. The food was just all right, not amazing not bad. More of a 3.5 stars as service was lovely and would be a 4 if based on service alone! We came in on a Wednesday to celebrate a birthday and realized that reservations are thoroughly recommended as they did happy hour all day Wednesday's that said, the hostess got us on a waitlist and we got a table (albeit a tiny table) about 15 minutes later. Service was genuinely lovely, from the hostess to bartender to server. I found that the food options although many many options just weren't as yummy as I hoped they would be. The fries were a hit (fries usually are), the edamame was SO spicy I was shocked that this was the level of spice offered to the general public. Potstickers were also good. The mains- were a little bit of a let down, the Mahi main was good but very fried, the ahi bowl had a lot of sauce on it- which took away from the flavour of the fish, my partner had the chicken bowl which he liked but again found the sauce to be very heavy. Dessert wise we had the brownie which was very very good and served with heaping scoops of ice cream! It's a fun place to come for apps and drinks but not really a place to come when you're looking for well cooked seafood options! read more

LOVE the outdoor patio seating!! Perfect for most of the year here in AZ and the weather was fabulous today! Had a happy hour after work with some colleagues and this is a beautiful place. Staff was amazing and attentive. I loved the appetizers more than the entrees! The fish nuggets were so good! I asked the wait staff which cocktail was the most asked for and she recommended the Mai Tai. Whew! It was potent! I definitely couldn't drink the entire glass! Went for a birthday party in a separate room with about 25 guests. Service was good and appetizers that were ordered were also good and served quickly which was was great with such a large group.... But we decided to stay for dinner and got the Jerk Pork to split, and it was just so-so. The pork was fatty through out and not tender. The Mango Sticky Rice was plain with just a couple of pieces of Mango on top and not sticky, so it was disappointing. We didn't have reservations so we sat at the bar. My hubby did all the ordering so I must admit, we are on vacation. I do not want to make decisions. :). This place is awesome, not only is the food amazing, the service is quick and courteous. I had the pleasure of dining here on several occasions and Ronnie always took great care in creating rapport with me which is something I value as I also do the same in my line of work. I have worked in customer service my entire life and would absolutely recommend this place, not just for the service and food but the overall vibe. The old Hollywood/Hawaiian vibe allows for a relaxed atmosphere, with a photographic history and enjoyable patio. The hula burger was my favorite, but the tacos and salads were equally delicious.
