This place is definitely worth the hype! I visited this place recently and was so impressed. My friend and I got a bunch of things to share - heirloom tomatoes custard, s'mores croissants, butter croissants, and an ube candy along with lattes. Everything tasted so damn good, it was very hard to pick a favorite. The place is packed and you have to stand in the queue to get in, but like I said before, totally worth it!

    Cheese and tomato Danish. Amazing

Amazing pastries, we've tried 6 of them so far and they have all been wonderful. But they never have bread which is very disappointing and why I'm giving 4 stars instead of the 5 stars that the pastries deserve.

worth the wait and the pastries are worth the hype. They open at 8 until they sell out or around 2. No seating inside, but it's pretty spacious with tall ceilings and an area to wait for your coffee. Friendly service and you don't feel rushed as you go through the queue and pick out your pastries. That's the way to do it. A lot of bakeries just ask you to pick without being able to see all of them so you're scrambling trying to figure out which ones you want in a panic, so I appreciate the process here. Favorite bite was the sweet corn and tart cherry croissant. It was. So good. Not too sweet and the corn was SO YUMMY. I can't wait to come back to try their other pastries.

This was by far my favorite stop during my day trip to Chicago. Although I did arrive pretty late and most of the pastries were sold out, I did manage to get some great pastries. Cinnamon Knots. Amazing. Almond Croissant. Bomb. The Kouign Amanns. Fantastic. The service was quick and the employees were very nice. The ambiance of the bakery was great as well. It has a lively, upbeat energy that perfectly fits the neighborhood. Even arriving late in the day, the space felt welcoming, vibrant, and full of character.

As you enter you will see this art on right - pretty cool

I was heading to Edgewater from suburbs to help a friend move there but I had some time to kill so I decided to stop by Bad Butter and get pastries. As I drove to the store, I noticed the line was there but it was not that bad so I decided to stand in line. I was able to find parking right next to store and in 20 mins, I was inside store. The store folks are very friendly - I felt the store vibes to be pretty European. I could smell the fresh baked items. It was amazing. I grabbed 5 items and a mocha. For some reason, I didn't enjoy my mocha that much. But pastries were outstanding - especially peach and Brie cruffin. I am so glad to visit this place.

We shared: @BadButterChicago 1. Lemon Lavender Kouign Amann 2. Chocolate Sourdough Banana Bread 3. Chocolate Gochujang & Marmalade Danish 4. Salsa Macha Monkey Bread 5. Hazelnut & Strawberry Choux Bun 6. Mustard Cream Cheese Pretzel Croissant 7. Miso Brown Butter Cookie Everything we ordered was near perfect and above average. I was impressed that the gochujang was intelligently mixed in the pastry with a mild profile instead of tasting the overpowering sweet sauce. Savory pastries were very craveable. I have a sweet tooth and loved that the sweet cream fillings weren't sickingly sweet or too artificial. Outer flaky crispy layer and inner soft layers were perfection. My only criticism is banana bread which I would prefer to be denser. No issues with service; staff were friendly. Order to-go only.

No seating inside. Long lines. To get best chance greatly before they open. I picked up rainy day stand in line at 7:30 and was out with my food 8:20 Service was good Food is great, different varities unique and tasty. Finally went at 8AM on a Saturday. Arrived around 8:10AM. Line was down the block and it took about 1hr to get our pastries. Definitely bring a friend to chat with or something to do. The ordering was very easy. Just ask for one of everything and they box it up nicely and you're ready to go! They also have coffee drinks that are reasonably priced. I just couldn't wait to go home and eat my pastries so I didn't order a drink. It's really hard to go wrong with any pastry here. I just enjoy coming back to try their new seasonal flavor combinations. The cruffin this season has fresh mango jam that provides a wonderful tartness. Hard to say if I like this or the yuzu one better. They ran out of the chocolate gochujang marmalade danish. I was really curious about that one. I love the space in general. Very open concept and you can see the kitchen too from the outside.

Bad Butter is a fabulous addition to Bucktown! Given the long lines I've seen - and the volume of pastries people are buying - I decided to arrive extra early on a Sunday. I was third in line at 7:10 am. By 7:30, the line had gotten fairly long. The baker-owner Dan opened the door to welcome us into the beautiful, modern storefront filled with his friendly staff. One of the baristas had little cups of drip coffee for the customers. I ordered a cinnamon knot, mango coconut cruffin, and ham and cheese croissant from the gorgeous array of pastries and cookies, plus an iced latte. As I waited for my latte, I watched as person after person checked out with multiple large boxes of pastries. If you want your pick of items, would definitely come early because of this. Each of the pastries was phenomenal. The ham and cheese croissant had the right amount of ham and cheese while still enabling you to enjoy the flaky, crispy croissant around it. Nicely filling, too. The cinnamon knot was a lot more complex than it looked. It was filled with a vanilla pastry cream with orange zest, was perfectly laminated, and dusted with just enough cinnamon to enjoy all the flavors. Finally, the cruffin: wow! So much fresh mango filling alongside pastry cream in its lovingly crafted croissant exterior. The iced latte was also very nice, and the baristas here are friendly. Dan said they're trying to get set up with a window for just coffee orders so you don't have to wait in the pastry line. Worth the wait. Pastry prices are higher than average for Chicago, but the quality and creativity makes them fair.

This might be my new favorite bakery in the city. The flavors of these pastries are INSANE and they are the most flakey, satisfying treats. The new space is absolutely stunning and while you're going to wait in line, at least you are entering greatness. The only trouble you'll have is narrowing down your order.

Got there at 7:40AM (they open at 8), got inside around 8:20, and was out by 8:30 with everything. Honestly a smooth experience and worth the hype!! The pastries are insane. The fancy chocolate croissant is literally a dream. Super flaky, crispy, and the chocolate tastes really high quality with a nice crunch. 9.5/10. The chocolate gochujang & marmalade danish was even more unique. Flaky layers with that citrusy sweetness and a slight spicy kick that works so well together. 9.7/10. The ham & cheese croissant was solid and crispy 8/10, and the chocolate sourdough banana bread was also really good 8.5/10. The space is modern, and you can tell they really care about what they're doing. Staff were all smiling, and even saw Dan there at the register which was cool. Overall just a really great experience!!

I didn't know this was a pre order hyped up type of place. I showed up to the hotel, there was a coffee shop and they had some left over croissants. The girl at the coffee place suggested to go online and pre order. I guess the stuff sells out fast weeks in advance. This isn't an actual bakery and you won't be able to just come here and buy some pastries like you would at a traditional bakery. It's more of a pop up. Not really for me. The croissant I took home was good though.

Went on their grand opening day expecting at least a 1.5-hour wait - and yes, it did take that long haha. The bakery was definitely a little underprepared for the amount of support, but I got lucky and was still able to grab some of their classic options: the basic croissant, danish, ham and cheese croissant, almond croissant, and chocolate cookie. I didn't get coffee this time, and honestly, I think I'll probably stick to the baked goods here. Overall, a fun grand opening experience, and great to see Chef Dan in person after years of just picking up from Emily Hotel haha.

I've been a customer of almost 10 years and have been obsessed since they first opened their doors at a different location. I literally live an hour away without traffic and even longer with traffic, but I make sure to stop by or send someone else to get it for me at least once a month or more. I love the amazing cakes that are so delicious and unique but on top of that, it is Asian owned, LGBTQ supporting, etc. A lot has changed since their little storefront with no seating. The bakery is now a full on cafe and I'm so happy to see how much they've grown and how successful they are. And while it is glorious, I will say I miss the sweet neighborhood charm and great customer service it used to have. Getting in touch with the bakery through phone or text can be tough and to be honest, sometimes one of the people working there is kind of...very mean. It had me questioning if I should keep coming back. I just love this bakery so much though and being raised by parents that had a small food business, I can't help but want to support. I had a particularly difficult last minute request for the bakery a few weeks ago and I was reminded why this place is so great. It had been YEARS since I made this specific request, which was an order for a slice of cake for every flavor and a cupcake for every flavor. This is a BIG and time consuming request, especially if it's last minute. Unfortunately I come to the city whenever the traffic isn't atrocious, so it's always last minute. Dom absolutely pulled through though. Even though there were other employees there (I saw two others but one disappeared and then another male was kind of walking around the cafe and such), Dom took this giant request and fulfilled it himself. The other gentleman (not the mean person previously mentioned) was actually who I made the request to, but he told Dom to do it. I was kind of confused why they didn't do it together but idk, maybe the other guy isn't allowed to handle food? Who knows. Regardless, this request obviously took a long time and the line was getting longer; people were getting a little restless but Dom stayed calm but was swift. I swear he was moving faster than most people in the industry could with a cake knife like that. He was not impatient or rude to me at all. He was just there to do his job as fast and well as possible. It's so rare to see that type of work ethic. He is also so obviously proud of the bakery and the food they serve which makes you feel good about being a patron there. So although I continue to have an unpleasant experience with one particular employee there, Dom keeps my love for this bakery alive. He reminds me of what this bakery was like when they first opened their doors. I hope Dom is cherished there and I bet he is considering his work ethic. I will continue to support this bakery and I recommend everyone else to support as well. It may not be that small little shop anymore but Dom is a reminder of the heart of the place.

The space feels really welcoming and homey, and I loved the aesthetic. There are only 3 tables though, so seating is limited. The Banana Bread (9.9/10) was ON CLOUD 9. So moist and chocolatey, with a light chocolate cream and roasted candied pecans that had the perfect crunch. Absolutely loved this one. The Raspberry Cinnamon Roll with Espresso Cream Cheese (9/10) had a nice laminated pastry and espresso cream wasn't overly sweet. Such a good combo. The Cookies & Cream Cheesecake Danish (9/10) tasted like a chocolate fudge danish topped with cookies and cream, which I loved. It had the firmest shell of the pastries we got and that extra crunch was perfect. The Hot Dog Pastry (8.5/10) was super flaky, and I loved the crunchy pieces on top. The Guava Custard Danish (8/10) had a great guava flavor and was solid. The Breakfast Pastry (8/10) had hashbrown, ham, and cheese inside a flaky crust. Flaky dough, soft pistachio center and creamy top with a sharp citrus cut. Peach + raspberry Melba danish. The peaches were soft. I'm not familiar with a Melba dessert but the center of this was almond paste which is not my favorite but if you like almond and tart danish it would hit the spot. Raspberry espresso cream cheese cinnamon roll was a fun fruity twist to a cinnamon roll. Couldn't really tell there was espresso though. Blueberry lime cheesecake danish. I also liked this one because of the lime. It really cuts through the heaviness. The fruits on top were also fresh. They also have one day old blind boxes. I grabbed a 6 piece day old box to go and it was actually 6 different pasteries, half sweet and half savory! It only repeated 1 of the pasteries I had originally tried so I'm excited to try more, especially the savory ones. It's an amazing deal if you just want to try a variety of flavors. Tried the Hot dog danish - really good! Upscale pigs in a blanket vibes. The tiny fried are seasoned perfectly and add a fun crunch.
