For a small place, this bakery packs quite a flavor punch! While the interior is cozy, there is plenty of space to order and look at the appetizing selection of sweet and savory pastries. There is also comfy booth seating and outdoor options. The counter is also located in a very convenient position, with easy access both inside and outside. The staff are extremely courteous and helped us to decide between the Shakshuka (Which I had tried before and is amazinggg) and the Sambusak. We went with the Sambusak and once again, I was not disappointed! The pastry was hearty and well baked, with a yummy filling consisting of eggplant and other veggies and a semi cooked egg. I seem to have had a string of disappointing pastry experiences recently. I've had Badolina on my list to try forever, and every time I walk past its cute storefront in Rice Village (usually after business hours), I recall how pretty their pastries look in yelp pictures. Finally stopped in on an early weekday afternoon, and it was an incredible letdown. I was looking forward to trialing the beautiful desserts I'd seen in photos, but unfortunately the only three available were a condensation-heavy mini cheesecake, a chocolate cake, and a matcha mousse cake. The pastry stand was more abundant, with some croissants and cookies and biscotti, but unfortunately a pesky fly had gotten in and I watched it land on multiple pastries. There were only two customers in the shop, myself and another in front of me. There was a server behind the cash register and another stocking items behind the counter. I waited a full 15 minutes before being acknowledged while the first server chatted loudly about her hair, nails, and skincare routine and the other behind the counter ignored my attempts to wave at her to help me with a to-go order since I needed to get back to work. I was on the verge of leaving when the server at the register finally paused in her conversation and said, "Yes?" Matcha mousse cake: Overly sweet with minimal notes of matcha, soggy layers of cake, and overall balance of too much cream to other components. Did not finish. Plain croissant: Dry and dense, it reminded me of an airport croissant I had once purchased that looked glistening and well baked on the outside while nearly inedible on the inside. There is cute outdoor seating underneath shaded umbrellas, no indoor seating. Prices were mid to slightly high in range of similar pastry shops, but given this experience, I likely won't be back. read more

Badolina is an adorable little bakery that I discovered with a colleague last weekend while attending a work conference in Houston. What a gem! So many cakes and pastries on display looking absolutely delicious, it was hard to make a choice. I settled for an almond croissant and some shortbread bites. I also grabbed a mocha and bought a sourdough seeded loaf for later. Everything turned out tasting awesome. The only feedback I have actually would be to tone down a little the sweet almond liquor taste in the almond croissant just a tad, because it was a lot. The crumb was very nice however and the mini cardamom shortbread bites were also delicious. All that said, the star of this visit was, for me, the loaf. Rustic looking and very dense, this load exceeded all expectations. It wasn't exactly cheap ($8-9 I think) but it's lasted over 8 days without any spoilage. We put it inside the fridge 3-4 days after buying. I suspect the sheer gargantuesque amount of seeds is probably helping preserve it, somehow. Suffice only to toast it and the bread is still very good. I've never seen this happen to a rustic bread bought in a traditional bakery before. They usually last 5-6 days and then start molding. I wish I lived nearer to this bakery or that they delivered! I am a fan and now so is my husband. I suppose I'll have to make a detour and stop by next time I'm in Houston. Definitely worth it. It has taken me way too long to come here and I underestimated how popular it was. The exterior is stunning with outdoor seating, parasols, and various surrounding plants that make you temporarily forget you're in Houston. Came around 2pm on Sunday to try their basque cheesecake and almost all of the desserts were sold out. Managed to snag the last Matcha Petite Beurre and I thank the lord for that. It was creamy, not too sweet, slight matcha taste with a hint of white chocolate (?), and the layer of shortbread cookies in between added a nice texture and buttery taste. It's right beside Hamsa, so shortly after our HRW lunch we popped inside Badolina. They had a lot of options still when we came by at 2-ish PM. Parking was frustrating as it is in Rice Village so things were pretty busy at that time. It's a small bakery, but it was not crowded. We got the Sambusak, Basque Cheesecake, Cardamom Bun, and what I believe were Alfajores. Everything was pretty solid! I liked the Basque Cheesecake and Cardamom Bun the most. Both the Sambusak and the Cardamom Bun are best warmed up. The cheesecake was so creamy. I thought the egg in the sambusak was a nice touch, especially with the tahini. Cozy interior and the Outdoor Patio was full-liked the vibe as given the plants/trees and Houston humidity combination it felt like you were somewhere Tropical. Ordering is at the counter and the display entices you with their house made baked goods in full view. Once your order is ready, they'll call your name at the pick up window. An abundant amount of pastries and desserts. Wanted one of each. Double Chocolate Croissant was just right chocolate and filling, airy and light-delicious! I also ordered a raspberry croissant that I was so excited for, the inside was complete mush and the employee over warmed it so it was hard. Not to mention it took about 25 minutes to receive my food. There is a window they should utilize and calm your name when your food is ready if it going to just sit at the window bar. Tried this place out with some family & we were all very pleased. The bakery has a nice ambiance outside and inside. There are a few spots to sit inside which is nice. The outdoor seating is very peaceful and gives you a touch of nature with their plants and trees. I went there before the oncoming winter storm. Unfortunately a small area indoors for people to sit and have coffee and pastries. The outdoor patio is pretty spacious great for fall and spring to people watch and sip coffee. The pistachio croissant I had was ok crispy outside and buttery inside with pistachio cream. The pastries here while I did not have a chance to sample their pistachio croissant which was filled with pistachio cream and their double chocolate croissant, which was covered with delicious crunchy chocolate pieces, my resident who did try their croissants seemed to inhale it attesting to how delicious it was. Now; it's not a full service breakfast place as they only have pastries, but they do have some options with eggs that are a little hearty like their quiches, but that's not why I come here. I come here for the double chocolate croissant. It's so good. Oh my god. I could eat like 3 of them in one sitting. And then the pizza focaccia. Like who doesn't love an excuse to have pizza for breakfast? The prices can add up pretty quickly but usually I order 1-2 things and the damage isn't too bad ($10-$14 depending on what I order). Make sure you get one of their coffees to go with your pasties. Lastly, the patio. I absolutely am enchanted with their patio. It is like going to a European cafe without leaving Texas. My friends and I snagged a seat inside and enjoyed our lattes and mango mousse dessert. The counter service was very quick, bonus points for them giving out health care worker discounts! Badolina is a dessert and coffee spot I had known about for quite some time before visiting. What intrigued me initially is the sophisticated aesthetic presentation of pastries and other baked goods. Very few bakeries make items which look as good as what's offered at Badolina. My croissant-like pastry tasted really good, as did the coffee. On the other hand, there are areas for improvement. I would describe the service as lethargic and not the most welcoming. I also found the indoor seating to be lacking. The ratio of outdoor to indoor seating is something like 3:1. More thought should have been given to this aspect of the business. Overall, I think this business is OK but has the potential to get better. This place is always busy and I get why! They have such a delicious variety of pastries and the service is lovely Parking: Parking can be a bit challenging as they don't have their own spaces. There is street parking right in front of the building. There's also a complementary Parking garage just across the street for the entire shopping center. The parking situation can be a bit inconvenient if you're just trying to do a quick pop in Service/space The service is great! While they can get pretty busy, they do still serve orders quite quickly. That being said, the space is quite small and gets pretty cramped inside, especially when there is a long line. They do have 2 bathrooms - the women's is a single stall. I assume the men's is as well. I've never had to wait though which is a pleasant surprise since they get so busy! Seating - there is some indoor seating with 2 top tables but it is a bit cramped. I recommend sitting on their patio as they do call out orders from the serving window. I was so intrigued when I first heard about this place so when I was in Rice Village grabbing some things, I made sure to stop by. It's a cute little store on Morningside next to a restaurant called Hamsa, both new, just down the street from Istanbul Grill. We arrived just after 11 am on a Wednesday. The place itself is small with small tables for 2 and maybe 3 along the wall but they were all occupied. There is more patio seating but it's a sauna outside so they were all empty at the time in July. As you walk further, you see display cases of mousse cakes ($10... we're vegetarian and mousse usually contains gelatin so I passed, but the flavors sounded so good!!) and baked goods including sweet and savory. I even spotted a vegan cookie! I only saw the one though. I was with my daughter who loves croissants and chocolates, so that helped me with my selection process. The cash register is at the end of the counter space and you order there and head back towards the front door to pick up your drinks. They have a simple drink menu that's visible towards the front of the shop, but not at the back... where you order. They do have paper menus at the cash register which was what I reviewed. I got everything to-go: CHOCOLATE CROISSANT: for my daughter, who did eat the entire croissant over two eating sessions (she's 6). I did nibble a little and tasted the cream. So the thing is the actual croissant dough is chocolate flavored so it's not just the filling. That was nice! I didn't feel like it was a moist (buttery) or airy/flakey as other croissants I've had, but the filling - WOW. The cream wasn't situated in the center of the croissant so if you're sharing, cut the croissant from one end to the other and not across the equator. But the cream was subtly sweet and you can taste the chocolate, which was borderline semi-sweet. My daughter would like to add that she enjoyed the crisp chocolate balls on top. The croissant would be a favorite if the pastry was more flaky. As it is, not bad at all! A solid 4/5. PISTACHIO BAKLAVA CROISSANT: the filling in this one was twofold. There's a grainy, sweeter one along most of the length of the croissant, BUT I found out there's an actual pistachio cream.. on only one half. The half I didn't eat. Haha... I shared with my husband and I got to steal a nice sized dollop from his half. That cream is PERFECTION. It's not that sweet (I can eat it with a spoon) and you can taste the pistachio. The croissant itself is a similar texture to the chocolate one but that cream. YUM. I'll rate it a... 4 (4.5??)/5. The croissants here are stubby little guys. Medium sized and though you can share, one person can finish one easily. Both croissants are $5.50 each so... perhaps not a great deal if you think of serving size but the flavors are delicious. I did note how they're not as buttery and pulled apart in lovely layers, but it's not unheard of with filled croissants. Probably helps to keep it from getting overly wet? I added a lightly iced MATCHA LATTE which, sadly, tastes similar to a mix I have at home that I wouldn't need to charge myself $4.50 to make. Even so, $4.50 can't really be considered a high a price for drinks these days, so I don't feel cheated. This was only a 3/5. While I waited for the drink, I spotted BASQUE CHEESECAKE - just $6 a slice, though the total was $.50 more - and I just had to go back and get me one because I've heard of it but haven't gotten to trying to make it yet. THIS IS HANDS DOWN MY FAVORITE THING HERE. Nothing to complain about. It seems small but they're decent sized pieces (I could eat 2 though, not going to lie - they're just that good) and so creamy and beautiful and decadent and the caramelization is *chef's kiss*. I wonder how much the full cheesecake is... I love it so much I will buy the whole thing. LOL. I think you know what my rating is for this so I won't even add it. Okay. So they have other items and some are so small for the price $3 for something barely 2 or 2.5 inches in diameter?? I've spotted some of the items here at Phoenicia (the market) but those were at least twice as big, which is what I compared with because it's what I know (sorry). But with what I tasted, I might try a little bit of everything over time. Whoever is the pastry chef/baker here has intrigued me (and they're awesome just based on the cream fillings and cheesecake). My friends and I were in town for the rodeo and Reba McEntire. Decided on this place due to the reviews. Yes I'll be a bit pricey it was so worth the trip! It's in a great little area for anyone visiting Houston. I'm a bit of a snob, especially when it comes to bakery items. We were so delighted with our pistachio croissants, chocolate croissant. The scones are out of this world. The coffee is amazing and the ambience is simply delightful. Especially if it's a nice day and you can sit outside. We were there fairly early so the other shops in the area were closed, unfortunately for us. I could see spending a full day here starting at this bakery. Will definitely be back the next time we're in Houston. read more

We did manage to get a chocolate chip pecan cookie and it was good, like a different kind of good. Didn't really taste like the standard American style chocolate chip cookies but it was good. Very cute & hip Israeli bakery/cafe spot right off Rice Village. Be sure to go earlier in the morning to snag one of their zucchini & leek quiches. Loved it. Every bite. It also came recommended by the cashier/owner (??). Their little spinach & cheese burekas were interesting and rather filling. The open foccacias and sambusaks (savory pastries) looked a little too bready for my taste so passed. I've tried their almond raspberry and pistachio croissants instead. Not too bad! The pistachio croissant to me was sadly a stale croissant filled with pistachio cream- the pistachio flavor was pretty strong, which was good, but I didn't see or taste any "baklava" qualities in it, which made me really puzzled why they would call it a pistachio "baklava" croissant. Meh, I sure have had better pistachio croissants somewhere else. The almond raspberry croissant was alright. I loved the upper part of the raspberry croissant because of the crunchy almond slices, but the bottom was so soggy like a wet sponge that I was not impressed with.
