It's a great combination of cold cuts that just synchronizes so well with the American cheese and oil, vinegar, spice concoction of the works. As for the hot sandwiches the eggplant parm has been my favorite. The eggplant is smooth and binds with the red sauce perfectly. Today they released a new contender for the best hot sandwich with a catchy name: The Rolling Roaster. It had roast beef soaked in Au jus enhanced with extra beef tallow blanketed with a layer of homemade cheese. The result was the juiciest roast beef with a deep beef flavor. The soft bread interior did a good job catching all of the excess juices as it was not as messy as I anticipated. Hope this stays on the regular menu as I will be adding it to my order rotation. My Hero is old school only accepting cash or checks. Along with that comes the great service and charm that makes this place what it is. When I went up to order, the man at the register got annoyed because I took a moment to decide. He slammed the register shut and muttered something under his breath, which didn't help the interaction at all. I ordered the "Psycho Chicken," which sounded great on the menu -- chicken cutlet, bacon, mozzarella, and chipotle mayo. But the execution wasn't there. I asked for a hero and got a roll. I asked for the sauce on the side and got a sandwich completely drenched in it. The chicken wasn't sliced, so it fell apart immediately, and they forgot the bacon entirely. On top of that, I waited almost 30 minutes for a $15.50 sandwich that didn't taste good. What really threw me off, though, was what I noticed while waiting. I saw employees vaping right in front of the food, and I watched them handle money and then touch the food with the same gloves -- which makes wearing gloves pointless. On top of that, the staff seemed irritated with each other the whole time, like nobody actually wanted to be there. The place feels rundown, the service is uncomfortable, and the food didn't deliver.
