    The champ
    Diana U.

You haven't had a hero until you've had a my hero hero. They're bread is my favorite hero bread anywhere and everywhere! This place is a no frills place. They seem like a old hole in a wall place, but it's part of their charm. Their menu is small but big on quality. The chicken club is the best on the island, hands down! So simple but the best flavor, best quality on the best bread. Second favorite is the champ! And they make their heroes so that nothing ends up being soggy...well unless you get one with gravy...but that's expected. They are quick to get your orders out. It is a cash establishment. But they do have an atm. They have picnic tables outside and very limited seating inside. You can park in the back or on the street. And recently they got access for customers to park in the carvel parking lot!! That huge! If you've been a long time patron, like me, then you know what a years long battle that has been haha

The Champ with 'the works' :)

My Hero is an old school spot with old school charm, and it's a forever CLASSIC! I've been coming here for quite some time, it's basically a Long Island institution, but last night we stopped by since it's been a hot second, and the sandwiches were just as iconic as ever. We shared their famous chicken club with melted provolone (you will love that twist), and the breaded chicken cutlets, lettuce, tomato, mayo, and bacon make this club the cult favorite that it is. (I'm all about the bacon for the crunchy, textural, flavorful contrast.) We also shared their Italian sub, aka The Champ, which is filled with Italian meats along with 'the works.' You guys, if you do anything, savor the WORKS. Their blend of shredded lettuce, tomato, onion, oil, vinegar, and oregano is absolutely everything. (I like letting it sit for a bit so the bread gets soggy from all the oil and vinegar goodness, too.) Honestly, I could see having a BLT with 'the works' and being one happy camper, but I digress...LOL. If anyone is looking for an authentic, high quality deli, look no further than My Hero in Merrick. They are a staple through and through.

I've been coming to My Hero Deli for years and was a huge fan of the previous owners, Dominic and Anthony. They created something really special, and I'm happy to say the new owners, Chris and his partner, have totally kept that spirit alive. They're super hands-on and really care about the place. The food is just as amazing as ever actually, maybe even better. Everything is super fresh, the sandwiches are massive, and the prices are still really fair. The staff is great too, especially seeing familiar faces from back in the day who still know exactly how to make everything the way we all remember. The place has had a nice update, and the new kitchen setup is awesome. I think the old owners would definitely be proud of the improvements. Also love that they're open seven days a week now no more showing up on a Monday and being disappointed. This place has always been a favorite, and I'm so glad it's in such good hands.

"My Hero" has been a Hero Lovers icon for many years! The variety of hero's are endless and the new owners have been keeping up with the times and adding some trendy new varieties to their menus! However, one of my all time favorites "Roasted Pork, Broccoli Rabe with melted mozzarella" was better than before! Today was the first time I ordered it that it was not soggy from the broccoli rabe. Each ingredient was perfectly placed with symmetry. Every bite was perfection from start to finish! It was such a delight that I had to take a pic after taking my initial bite so that I could let the new owners know how much I enjoyed it! So Delicious, you gotta try it!

Chicken club hero with honey mustard

Seems like My Hero has been a pretty big local spot for a long time and I've been wanting to try it for a while. With that in mind, I was able to finally get their heroes a few times over the past year. The place is very much a grab and go type of place that is small and cash only. A good thing I've noticed is that their prices seem to include tax. The sandwich I've been getting is the 'chicken club', which has chicken cutlet, bacon, lettuce, tomato, and mayo ($13). I usually substitute honey mustard for the mayo though. I pretty much have nothing but good things to say about the sandwich. First off, the full size sandwich is huge - enough for 2 meals probably. And that's exactly how I like my heroes. The chicken cutlet is breaded nicely and fairly thin. They pack a lot of it on there and the bread also has been pretty fresh every time. It all comes together perfectly and definitely one of my favorite cheat meals in the rotation. The only other deli on LI that I frequent occassionally is Cherry Valley and I think the sandwich at My Hero delivers significantly more quality and quantity at the same price. So I'd give it 5 stars for the time being.

Never fails, you can always get a solid hero from this place love sandwiches and one of my favorite is the Bocachini. If you're gonna order the legend, make sure you're hungry. It's about 3 pounds of meat. It is unbelievable.

The meal includes 8 pieces of leg and thigh, 4 rolls, and 2 sides--we chose yucca fries and mac & cheese. I had takeout from a previous Yelp event, so I didn't expect dine-in service, but they gave us a table number and brought the food out to us. They also provided melamine plates, which was a nice surprise and made the meal feel more dine-in than fast-casual. When I the staff member about takeout containers, she misunderstood and immediately brought them over with a bag--honestly, super helpful. Service was outstanding. The food was hot, fresh, and delicious. The chicken was crispy and full of flavor. My son loved the yucca fries and rolls. I especially enjoyed the mac & cheese and chicken. We also tried the jamaica and horchata drinks (not included in the meal), and both were excellent. I wish I had a Pollo Campero near me--but maybe it's for the best, or I'd be here all the time!

Can't compare this with fast food locations like Popeyes, but can draw similarities to say an old school Boston Market that no longer really exists on L.I. You get an option of a side or a few but more homey to the Latin cultural roots of this chain. Therefore instead of ordering say mashed potatoes you can order Yuca Fries :) which are a healthier version believe or not, with just a slightly starcher root vegetable texture. On this outing to try the new location we opted for the 2 piece Drum Thigh with one side (slaw) drink and dinner roll, and added two Breasts and the Yuca Fries. All were made hot and fresh and served to our table by a friendly counter server, family style in large festive plate (w/side plates, disposable utensils). The flavorful chicken was great, yuca fries yummy and the slaw was definitely worth trying since their recipe tastes different than others. Pricing was more than fair for what we ordered, and I would consider definitely going back to try more of their menu items, as well as recommending others to give them a try. If you're not in this area to give them a try, I believe you can spot them at Penn Station. ;)

The Hot Chicken Tenders were crispy, juicy, and packed solid flavor with a nice heat level that built up without being overwhelming. The fries were decent and worked well as a side. This was the highlight of the night! Highly recommended. The wings were ok but i felt like it was more bones and skin than actual meat. These must have been some really small chickens. The grilled octopus came with two delightful sauces and some grilled mini potatoes. It was tender and flavorful. The Nikkei was like Peruvian tuna poke but I wish it was a little less salty. For mains we went all out. We got the matador combo and an arroz con mariscos and a full platter of jalea. It was enough food for 6 people with quite a bit left over. One of the standouts we never expected was the seafood rice.. the sauce it came in was rich and complex and creamy. Not like a paella, more like a risotto.. that was finished quickly everyone loved it. For the matador combo it is a huge amount of food. The chicken was standout juicy and came with a ton of sides like avocado salad, rice and beans, tostones, and salchipapas and fries. It was all really good and can fill up your party. EVERY time I come here to pickup a mobile order around the estimated pickup time (which is a good 10 minutes after the order has been placed) the staff hasn't even THOUGHT about starting to prepare the order. They only focus on preparing orders placed in-store, so as I'm standing there waiting a whole 15 minutes past the time my order was supposed to be ready, customers are literally walking in, ordering at the register, and walking out with their orders. The sheer lack of consideration for wasting people's time is blatantly dysfunctional, unorganized, and negligent. The whole point of placing a mobile order is for that order to be prepared and ready BEFORE the person arrives. The other way in which the staff is disrespectful, particularly towards delivery drivers who are getting paid to facilitate their business, is that they treat all drivers like thieves. After making drivers wait 15+ minutes past the pickup time, the staff has the audacity to then refuse to hand the driver the order until the driver has "confirmed" the order on the app. They do this because scumbag drivers in the past have stolen orders without confirming. The actual solution to the ROOT of this problem is to report those thief drivers to whichever company the order was placed on (UberEats, DoorDash, etc) and get that driver deactivated. Treating every single driver like a thief, especially AFTER deliberately making the driver lose money by waiting a long time for a fast food order, is disrespectful beyond belief. It's almost as if they don't realize that drivers are also potential customers, and fellow citizens who are just trying to make a living. Any business that's managed this way doesn't deserve ANYONE'S money.

The drink menu is pretty creative and expansive too and it looks like the place is set up for evening Karoke... super fun.

I ordered two of each: frijoles con queso, loroco con queso, and pupusas ruevueltas. Each came with the curtido on the side. I definitely will be ordering from here again!

What attracted me was the birria tacos. Not a lot of places have them and, if they do, they're expensive. Here, they're always available and come 3 to an order for about $16. You get consomme and a spicy sauce to add. Then they wrap it tightly in a box with plastic wrap so nothing spills. Yay! I've also gotten the chichirrones. They're dry, but delicious. They don't speak English well (stay away ICE!), so they may have asked me if I wanted something to put on it, but I said no. I'll make some sort of gravy if I feel like it. The drinks are in a little refrigerator next to the tables. I picked out a dark liquid in a see-through cup. I asked what it was and she kept saying something about Jamaica. We couldn't understand each other, but I tasted it and it was so refreshing and sweet. When I got home, I looked it up to find out Flor de Jamaica is hibiscus leaves and I was drinking sweet hibiscus tea. I will now go to my local international grocery and get the ingredients to make it myself. It was $6.60 for about 20 ounces. The staff and customers are so nice. I really have to brush up on my Spanish as I don't use it enough even though I have the need. I definitely recommend Lempira Deli no matter what language you speak.
